Ending drop cap styling after a paragraph return

I’m working back in the dark ages of CS4 and I’m having an issue with drop caps and my workflow in the office. I have a drop-cap applied to the first paragraph via the Paragraph Style and I have apply next style active. When editors go into the text box and add a new paragraph, mid way through the existing first paragraph, the newly created paragraph had the drop cap applied. How do I get InDesign to deactivate the drop cap command after the first word or first sentence so this will not happen.

You'll just have to apply a new paragraph style to the new paragraph.
The Next Style doesn't apply here, because there's text after the cursor
where you split the paragraph.
So just apply a new paragraph style that doesn't have a drop cap --
verty quick if you use a keyboard shortcut for it.

  • Drop Caps Issues

    Hello,
    I'm designing a newsletter. I'm using drop caps. I'm a bit alarmed that, when I use drop caps, it literally throws off the baseline alignment of succeeding lines. The paragraph with the drop cap hugs the baseline, which I've told it to do. But, succeeding paragraphs are dropped down a couple of points. Why? If I take out the drop cap from that first paragraph, everything base aligns again. It's as if it displaces text just by being there, the drop cap.
    Thanks.

    Is drop sahdow set in the document with nothing selected?

  • Getting Rid of Space After Drop Caps?

    Styles are awesome, and using InDesign is a real treat! However, I'm having a rather frustrating problem when exporting to EPUB.
    My Drop Caps span only 2 lines, and they display just fine within InDesign itself. Yet, when exporting to EPUB, there's a large space after the Drop Cap. It;s really ugly and screws up the text flow, of course. How do I eliminate this problem??
    I'm new to InDesign, so a step-by-step would be great! In case it;s needed, here's the style setup for this paragraph:
    1. First two words are small-capped AND bolded
    2. First letter is, additionally, drop-capped (2 lines)
    The styles are applied separately - no nesting. I can use either CS5 or CS5.5, if that makes a difference. If you have any other questions to help me resolve this, please feel free to ask. Thanks!
    Mike

    I do believe I answered my own question. I also had the first line indented 2p0, just like the other normal paragraphs. I set the drop cap to 0p0 - on a lark - and the problem resolved itself. I supposed, with a drop cap, there's really no need to indent, so I won't!
    However, if anyone knows a way to indent the first line 2p0 without the space after a drop cap, that'd be nice to know. otherwise, I'm okay for now. Thanks!

  • Automatic 'return' after a paragraph

    It seems to me TLF automatically inserts a 'return' between two paragraphs. So if the first paragraph ends with a return, you get two empty lines between the paragraphs. Is this a correct assumption?
    I have been working around this by deleting the last return in a paragraph...
    But now (which maybe seems a little bit strange) I want to show two paragraphs without any return, so my work around doesn't do the trick anymore...
    Does anybody know if you can turn off the automatic return after a paragraph?

    Thanks for the replies!
    I think the "paragraph terminator" is what I would like to bypass...
    I've made a short example:
    package {
    import flash.display.Sprite;
    import flashx.textLayout.formats.TextLayoutFormat;
    import flashx.textLayout.container.ContainerController;
        import flashx.textLayout.elements.ParagraphElement;
        import flashx.textLayout.elements.SpanElement;
    import flashx.textLayout.elements.TextFlow;
    import flashx.textLayout.container.ScrollPolicy;
    public class Test2 extends Sprite
      public function Test2() {
       var tekstLayoutFormat:TextLayoutFormat = new TextLayoutFormat();
       var cs:Sprite = new Sprite();
       addChild(cs);
       var textFlow:TextFlow = new TextFlow();
       textFlow.format = tekstLayoutFormat;
       var tekstveldController = new ContainerController(cs, 400, 400);
       tekstveldController.verticalScrollPolicy = ScrollPolicy.OFF;
       tekstveldController.horizontalScrollPolicy = ScrollPolicy.OFF;
       textFlow.flowComposer.addController(tekstveldController);
       textFlow.flowComposer.updateAllControllers();
       var paragraphElement = new ParagraphElement();
       var spanElement = new SpanElement();
       spanElement.text = "text1";
       spanElement.fontSize = 10;
       paragraphElement.addChild(spanElement);
       var paragraphElement2 = new ParagraphElement();
       var spanElement2 = new SpanElement();
       spanElement2.text = "text2";
       spanElement2.fontSize = 10;
       paragraphElement2.addChild(spanElement2);
       textFlow.addChild(paragraphElement);
       textFlow.addChild(paragraphElement2);
       textFlow.flowComposer.updateAllControllers();
    This test shows:
    text1
    text2
    What I would like to get (maybe strangely enough) is:
    text1text2
    is this possible?

  • Drop cap for FIRST paragraph only

    I know how to create a drop cap for a paragraph manually. But I will be filling a textbox from XML, which may contain one or more paragraphs. If I assign a drop cap as part of the paragraph style, every paragraph gets a drop cap, when I only want it on the FIRST paragraph. It seemed liked Nested Styles offered some promise, but that appears to only work with character styles, and drop cap is available only as a paragraph style.
    Is there any solution to this, short of scripting? And if scripting is required, does anyone have any pertinent examples of applying paragraph styles with scripting? I'm a seasoned pro with VB, but I haven't tried VBScript in InDesign yet, and not even sure what the object model looks like.
    Thanks!

    Please forgive my ignorance, but is "next style" some kind of intrinsic functionality (as suggested by the quotes)? If there is some kind of functionality that says apply a variant of style to the first paragraph, and the original (based on) style to the rest, that's what I'm looking for.
    I did arrive at a work-around, using the original style and basing a new style on it (thanks for the tip, I didn't think about that), but it's less elegant than I'd like. What I did is, instead of assigning an XML tag to the entire textbox, I selected the first paragraph and assigned a tag to it; then I selected the remaining paragraph(s) and assigned a different tag. I mapped styles to each tag, with the first having the drop cap. So far, it seems to work--though I've found that with ID and XML, it's best to keep things as simple as possible. ID's implementation of XML can be a little squirrely. This also adds the burden of having the software which generates the XML, determine when the first paragraph ends and the second begins.
    If anyone else out there tries this, please note: ID adds as "Story" tag to the structure. You'll need to add this tag to your XML as well (and remember, tag names are case sensitive).

  • How do I change the spacing before or after a hard return in Pages 5.5.2?    I am working on an academic article and need to specify paragraph formatting (OS X Yosemite 10.10.2)

    How do I change the spacing before or after a hard return in Pages 5.5.2?    I am working on an academic article and need to specify paragraph formatting (OS X Yosemite 10.10.2)

    Hi Michele,
    Select the paragraphs where you want to change the spacing.
    Format Panel > Text > Spacing
    You can change 1.0 - Single to something else, or type a number in Before or After.

    Ian.

  • Control space after the Drop Cap

    ID3, XP
    We character style drop caps. When the DC is a single character, we use the tracking in the character style to add space to the right of the dropped character. However, this method cannot be used when it is a two character drop, in this case, chapter numbers are dropped 2 lines. We want to adjust the space between the dropped number and the start of text, and keep that space equal on both lines.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    The first issue is still that humbled wasn't able to add space after the drop caps and maintain alignment of the text. Bottom line is that  his method of using character spacing was a bad hack. I'm pointing out that the alternative solutions he tried (ex. post #4) didn't work because he wasn't using the correct value for the number of drop characters. And per his post #21, he is still assuming that 2 is the correct value to define a double digit drop cap. If he gets past that, solutions to other complications may come easier.<br /><br />In fact, unless he needs some specific sized space HIS WHOLE PROBLEM FROM START TO FINISH could be solved simply by selecting 3 as the number of characters for his drop caps rather than sticking with 2. That would have the effect of including the space after the chapter numbers as part of the drop cap making it larger and adding considerably more space.<br /><br />If he does need more space, then he is going to have to add another character. But that character still has to be included in the DC character count:<br /><br />12<space>Text (3 drop caps)<br />12<hardspace>Text (3 drop caps)<br />12<space><hardspace>Text (4 drop caps)<br /><br />He can even use a tab character for a specific indent if he wants. Just switch a tab for the hardspace above.<br /><br />P.S. The same logic holds true for in single drop caps. If you want extra space after, increase the drop cap count to 2 to include the space after.

  • Drop cap in first paragraph only...

    Hi All,
    I've found what looks like the solution to this, but it doesn't work (thereby rendering it a non-solution).
    Anyways, I have created two paragraph styles ("First Paragraph Style" and "Following Paragraph Style"). In "First Paragraph Style" I have set the Drop Cap, and I have set "Next Style" (under "General") to "Following Paragraph Style" (which does not have a Drop Cap setting, or rather the default settings ie. 0 lines, etc.).
    The rub: I apply First Paragraph Style to my text and... all the paragraphs have a drop cap as defined in First Paragraph Style. Major sadness!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks a lot!

    Next style only works automatically when you are typing and hit enter. For placed or pasted text, or previousluy entered text, follow Fred's instuctions.

  • Space after paragraph "returns"

    Hi!
    I've made a template so that I don't have to keep telling Pages not to make space after each paragraph, but... Each time I use a style (like Heading) it automaticlly sets the space after a paragraph to 12 pt. This is annoying - can I change it?
    Thanks

    You are most welcome.
    I found the pdf Pages 2 User Guide accessible from the front help page to be the most useful thing. It's 250 pages but there is a great deal of white space in there. It contains most of the useful conceptual stuff you need that is absent from the individual help snippets.
    Don't ever feel guilty about posting a question though. That's what these boards are for.

  • Drop Cap spacing

    Using XP and CS3. In placing a drop cap, using Adobe Garamond with a 3 line drop, the bottom of the letter (using an "A") actually goes into the third line of type. I can't figure out a way to give me a little more space from where the drop cap ends to where the paragraph indention starts. Is there an easy way to do this?
    Thanks.
    Gordon

    If you mean that the bottom right-hand corner of the drop cap
    overlaps the first character on the third line of type, you can get
    round it by putting a thin space between the first and second
    characters of the paragraph, then setting the drop cap to apply to
    two characters instead of one.

  • Drop Cap Button + Gradient Feather Tool like indd

    A drop cap button similar to the indesign in the paragraph menu. Usually I delete the first letter and use a text wrap around an individual character - this is messy as it doesn't follow the rules of the baseline if I start moving things around, and if I change my mind I need to remember to retype the first character again.
    Also I wish there was a gradient feather tool in illustrator to bypass making transparent gradient masks in the appearance panel - half the time I copy the image into indesign - apply the feather - and paste it back into
    illustrator in less time it would take to create the same effect in illustrator.
    Thanks for listening,
    Caitlin

    Contact Sheet is a welcome return. So many features can be adapted. I made this a few years ago by sizing up 40 images, and turning off titles, and ‘Flatten Layers’ when making the contact sheet. It was then fairly simple to FT each layer to give some overlap, and use Layer masks for creative affect.
    It was eventually incorperated into a poster for the organisation running the event.
    Some interesting JDIs  (thanks so much for the typed list!).
    The Eye dropper changes appeal to me, and Ctrl J now working on Groups is very welcome.  Lots more there, but what worries me is that there are apparently twice as many new JDIs in CS6 as there were in CS5, which makes me think I must be missing a lot of the CS5 JDIs.  is there a list somewhere?

  • Drop Cap 2nd or 3rd character

    How can I make a drop Cap of the 2nd or 3rd character at the beginning of a paragraph?

    First, make a new paragraph style. Then apply Drop Cap to the first two or three characters:
    Then with the first two characters selected, adjust their size and baseline shift to return them to normal font size and position (you probably should use guides to make it as accurate as possible):
    When you've got it right, make a new Character Style using the selected characters as a model:
    Then go back to the Paragraph Styles Options dialog, and in "Drop Caps and Nested Styles" add a new Nested Style that applies the new Character Style to the first two characters:
    Finally, you can apply your paragraph style to new paragraphs as you see fit.

  • Is there a way to create drop caps in iBooks Author?

    Is there a way to create initial drop caps in iBooks Author?

    Great, drop caps work, thanks.
    I wanted to kern them back (I can't help myself) and I found that if I put a space after the box and then kerned the space back, it worked visually. Do you think that will cause issues down the road? It previewed ok.
    Also if I make the boxes too tight, again to make it more typographically pleasing, may I have issues later if people increase or decrease the font size?
    I don't have an iPad yet so I can't check it that way. If something previews, will it run?
    thanks

  • [JS, CS3] How to find text that is NOT a paragraph return

    Hi all,
    This is probably an easy one, but I can't seem to get the idea. I want to search within some text and find everything EXCEPT the paragraph return. What would be the way to build that expression? Thanks for any response.
    Regards,
    Len Swierski

    Thanks, Peter!
    I appreciate your help but I have found another solution. I am amazed at my own stupidity sometimes. You see, I do my scripting in a very lame sort of way because I have never used Javascript outside of InDesign. As such, I find myself at a disadvantage because the documentation that Adobe provides assumes that you are aware of many of the basics. Case in point: I have always had trouble manipulating strings because I NEVER KNEW that you could search and replace strings! I just could not find examples of this in the Adobe documentation. So here I was in some cases adding temporary textFrames so I could get to my strings as text contents and then removing the temporary textFrames at the end of the script. In this particular case I needed to merge several paragraphs into one paragraph. Now that I know how to search & replace strings, it is so simple to strip away all the paragraph returns (which are included in text contents). I am learning, albeit rather slowly. Thanks again.

  • How do I use a picture as Drop caps?

    I have a picture that I want to place to the left of the paragraph. I want the same function as a Drop cap, ie it should occupy a certain amount of rows, and it should follow the first line in the paragraph.
    Just placing the picture before the first letter and juggle with the Text Wrap settings seems to be impossible. I have to use the Drop cap setting, but then I get other strange behaviors.
    Placing it as a picture alloww me to adjust the Text Wrap and position correctly, but then the image will not follow the Paragraph...
    I hate when I don't understand how I should do things!
    How do I do?

    Text Wrap is the best way to go. But you also want the graphic to move with the text.
    So you need to create an Anchored Object. You can read about the topic in InDesign Help.
    If you tried to cut and paste the graphic into the text, it won't work because it's just creating an inline graphic. You actually want to create the graphic to be anchored in the previous paragraph so you can also have the text wrap. Here are a couple screen captures to help you.
    It's a lot easier to create this in InDesign CS5.5 (you didn't say which version of InDesign you're using) because you can drag from a blue square which appears at the upper right corner to where you'd like to anchor the file. It's a little trickier in earlier versions of InDesign.
