Ending up with duplicates.....

Right now I organize all my photos with finder. If I import all those photos to iPhoto will I end up with a photo library for both iPhoto and finder (therefore meaning I end up with duplicates of the same picture), or does iPhoto use the database of pictures from the finder to construct a more visual interface? I like using finder to organize my pictures but if can get more out of using iPhoto, then I would like to try.

Yes and no.
By default, iPhoto copies the files into it's own filing system on import. This renders your own arrangement redundant and a waste of disk space.
It is possible to set iPhoto to work with your current filing system, but this is limited and I don't recommend it. More on this below...
A digression to the core issue:
I like using finder to organize my pictures but if can get more out of using iPhoto, then I would like to try.
The Finder is a file organiser. It's great for organising files. But that's all. The Finder doesn't care if your file is a photo, music, video, text or pdf - it treats them all the same.
But some types of file offer particular opportunities and have special requirements. Mp3 files, for instance, have metadata that associate particular tracks with others to group them as Albums. Photos have Exif and IPTC metadata that allow them to manipulated in other ways. The Finder can do nothing with this data.
iPhoto is a database. That means you import the files and forget about them. The point of the database is that it's much more flexible - you can organise your photos in virtually limitless ways without constant recourse to the files.
Simple example: You have your folders full of files. Say it's Date based. What of you want to have another folder of your best photos? Then you need to duplicate the files.
In iPhoto you can rate the pics, make a smart album and regardless of where the files are, see the best pics grouped together.
So, with iPhoto you work with the Photos not the Files.
Here's a canned answer that I use to explain the type of things possible with iPhoto:
I use keywords and Smart Albums exensively. I title the pics broadly.
I keyword on a
Who
What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 30k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
File -> New Smart Album
set it to 'All"
title contains Seattle
keyword is mountain
keyword is snow
rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
New Smart Album
Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.
- End of canned answer -
Try that in the Finder.
*Best Advice*
Import 100 pics to iPhoto and explore. See what ir does - and doesn’t do. It's not right for everyone. After you've played around a bit you can make your decision.
As promised: how to run a Referenced Library:
*How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
*What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
*Some things to consider:*
1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organiser
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
*To Edit in an External Editor*
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.

  • When I migrated the contents of my iMac to my new MacBook Pro (both running Lion), I ended up with duplicate icons in the launchpad. How do I get rid of them?

When I used migration Assistant to transfer stuff from my iMac to my MacBook Pro, both running the latest update of Lion, I ended up with duplicate icons in the Launchpad. How do I correct this situation. Some can be deleted using the iPad method of holding down an icon until they all jiggle and then clicking the "X" to delete. However, most do not have x's appear next to them. Otherwise, the migration seemed to go okay.

Launchpad will display an icon for each copy of an application that is currently installed (as well as any aliases to those applications), so you will see more than one icon for an application if you have more than one version of the application installed or aliased. So did you create any aliases of these apps on your old computer? If so, delete them.

You can create, rename, and delete albums on iPhone to help you organize your photos and videos.
Create a album: When viewing albums, tap Edit, then tap Add. Select photos to add to the new album, then tap Done. Note: Albums created on iPhone aren’t synced back to your computer.

In iTunes the only folder that I can see listed is the man one into which iTunes stores pictures, which I have named iPhone Photos.
When I look on my PC this iPhone Photos folder contains another folder named iPod Photo Cache and a multitude of folders created by iTunes, the named F00, F01,F02 etc etc. and a Photo Database file.
Now whether I create a seperate folder within iPhone Photos to store my favourite photos in, or just copy them all into the iPhone Photos folder without being encased within another folder, or create a folder inside the iPod Photo Cache folder the result is the same ...

  • On my windows Itunes I changed computers and ended up with two of every song. How do I delete the duplicates without doing it one at a time?

I have duplicates of all the songs on my windows 7 computer.  I changed computers and ended up with duplicates of all of my songs. How can I delete them all without having to do it one at a time? thanks!

Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.

  • Photo Library with duplicate pictures

I need help with the photo sync function. When syncing photos from my computer to my phone (via iTunes), a folder called Photo Library is automatically created on my phone, containing duplicate pictures of every picture being transferred.
To be specific and very clear, I have the Camera Roll on my phone. I have two folders on my computer with pictures which I want to add to my phone. These folders are titled "Miami beach trip" and "Hollywood trip" and contain 50 pics and 30 pics, respectively.
When I tried to sync the photos using iTunes, I ended up with 3 folders on my iPhone, in addition to the Camera Roll. I ended up with the Miami beach trip with 50 pics, hollywood trip with 30 pics, and a Photo Library folder with 80 pics (duplicates of all pics from Miami trip and hollywood trip).
Is there a way to sync so that I don't end up with duplicates? I tried deleting the iPhone Photo Cache folder before syncing and that did not work. Please help.

So this is normal? Is there a way to NOT have the Photo Library folder? It is pretty redundant and I would prefer to NOT have the same pics appear in more than 1 folder.
When I first realized that the Photo Library folder automatically appeared with the same exact photos from other folders, I became quite frustrated. I started messing around with the sync function. I would delete the iphone photo cache, then sync. Then I removed the folders that I had just added. Then I synced again. I did this quite a few times and somehow, I finally was able to add a folder without the Photo library containing all the pictures.
It was a fluke and I don't even know what I exactly did. I can't get it to work this time around but am convinced that there should be a way to do it.
Do you know how? Thank you for your time and help.

  • After initial import, I end up with tons of duplicates

I bought my first Mac (macbook) about 3 months ago and am just trying iPhoto. I keep ending up with several copies of the same photos when I initiate the import. The Mac setup as folders is a little confusing to me but I chose the folders that had my photos I wanted to import. Not only do I get many copies of the same photos, I also get system icons transferred over.
Any help or advice is appreciated, thanks.

What are you dragging into iPhoto to import? If you getting some system icons then you're selecting some system folders it appears.
If you still have the photos on your hard drive outside of iPhoto create a new library (launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and select "Create new..." ) and drag just the individual folder(s) that contain the image files into iPhoto. Make sure the contents of the imported folder contains only the jpg or image files.

  • Is there a download and convert in a single step option in the flashdownloader 2.6.8. add-on? I end up with two files, one downloaded original and one converted to my chosen format.

Files are downloaded and only then encoded, so I end up with two files in the drive.

That has been like that since Firefox 3.0 was released in June 2008 - 7 major version releases thus far with it like that and the developers haven't changed it - so I wouldn't count on it.
When I want to save a duplicate bookmark, I just "grab" the website image in the Location Bar and drag it into the Bookmarks Sidebar, into the folder where I want it placed. On Windows and Linux, { Ctrl + B } opens the sidebar and then just drag.

  • How to create a playlist *with* duplicate songs

I have a practice where I need to play a playlist with duplicate audio tracks.  The audio tracks are not duplicated in the iTunes app and I don't want to duplicate them as audio tracks.  I only want to create a playlist that will play the same audio track at different points in the playst.  For example...
    Announcement of beginning
    Round 1
    Announcement of task1
    John Doe 1
    John Doe 2
    3 minute work window
    Countdown of 10 minutes
    Round 2
    Announcement of task2
    John Doe 3
    John Doe 4
    3 minute work window
    Countdown of 10 minutes
    Round 3
    Announcement of task1
    John Doe 5
    John Doe 6
    3 minute work window
    Countdown of 10 minutes
    Round 2
    Announcement of task2
    John Doe 7
    John Doe 8
    3 minute work window
    Countdown of 10 minutes
As you can see... I need to be able to duplicate the playlist audio tracks at certain points in the playlist to create the event that I need for that day.
The problem is that iTunes sees that a duplicate track is put into the playlist and doesn't allow it.  I end up with this as I can not readd an audio track that I have in the playlist already.
    Announcement of beginning
    Round 1
    Announcement of task1
    John Doe 1
    John Doe 2
    3 minute work window
    Countdown of 10 minutes
    Round 2
    Announcement of task2
    John Doe 3
    John Doe 4
    John Doe 5
    John Doe 6
    John Doe 7
    John Doe 8
Is there no way to tell iTunes to allow duplicate audio tracks in a playlist?

Smart playlists and playlist folders won't hold duplicate entries, but it should be possible to put the same track more than once into a regular playlist. Go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and click the button Reset Warnings... iTunes should now warn you when you try to add duplicate items to a playlist, but you should have the option to add the items anyway.

  • For some reason when I uploaded my photos from my i pad i have ended up with doubles and triples of many photos. How can I find them and then delete them?

When I uploaded photos from my ipad to my desktop, for some reason I ended up with numerous doubles and triples. How can I find the duplicate photos and isolate them and then delete them?

Pretty sure they are just jpegs from my canon 7D
How did you get the photos from your Canon into your iPad?

    hi,
U can change radio button option in per document tab of document settings for sales order,
Either change it to without warning / warning only When duplicated customer reference no. occurs.
Modify customer reference number by including dot at end.

  • I have some photos burned to CD in 2003.  Ending up with multiples

I burned originals with a Mac G4 and my new 27 in imac will not read them. I can read them on an older 24in imac and I want to move all from old CDs to new computer. When I burn a new CD from the 24i,which I can then load onto the 27in I end up with multiple copies of most but not all files. This makes an already cumbersom process very time consuming. The do not import duplicates does not work as the second and third copy of a file has a different "name" ie 1344 vs 1344-2.
Why is ths happening and is there any way to avoid it? Thank you for your time.

How did you burn the disk originally?  Did you use the Share ➙ Burn menu option in iPhoto?  If so that creates a mini library on the CD or DVD which can only be read by iPhoto.
It should, when inserted into the optical drive, show up inh the left hand pane of the iPhoto Library window like this:
Did you burn the disk like I mentioned above and if so are you not able to view the disk as in the screenshot?  If  it's yes to both questions then just drag the Events under the Disk icon onto the Events icon at the top to import the original and modified files along with keywords and titles.
If it's not as above describe how you burned the disk and how you try to import the photos.
Do not try to import the entire mini library into your library. That just creates duplicates and imports thumbnails as originals.

  • RECENT PROBLEMS WITH DUPLICATE CONTACTS

I have an IPhone. All has been well for months until 2 days ago (possibly after the update I did on IPhone).
Since then my contacts - which are getting synced via ICal - have duplicated - both in Entourage and Plaxo.
I have run the "De-duper" in Plaxo and get back to single set.
Yesterday I painstakingly manually deleted almost 700 contacts from Entourage.
    I reset "Sync Services".
But this morning the duplicates are all back.
In my ITunes/IPhone Info tab, it does not show where the contacts are coming from - just says Personal.
On the calendars, I see 3 calendars that are synching - Home, Work & Personal.
Plus - and this may be unrelated - it seemed to have chnaged the default email address for some contacts in Entourage.
    Help !!!!
I am afraid to sync my IPhone for fear I will end with duplicates in my contacts & on my calendar.
How do I stop this madness?
    Thanks.

I had the same problem after 1.1.3. I'm on Windows XP using Outlook. I need something to clear the dups off the iPhone.

  • Working with Duplicates

    Guys,
We have employee ID as a unique identifer for an employee dimesion.
We have a requirement to report Employee wise data by names which have repetations as data is across Geo's.
I tried sloving this using Alias for employee id with employee name, but it does not allow duplicate Alias names.
Any other way of dealing this to report Employee name?
How to work with duplicates? Is it recommended?

most people append the employee ID to the end of the name alias so every entry is unique.I am giving some detailed picture of Glenn's comments.
It is regular issue when we are handling Customer and Employee kind of dimensions.
Say you are having two columns in the dimension file like
EMPID EMPNAME and EMPNAME had duplicates.
One standard technique is there that we have used in many cases to eliminate the duplication.
While developing rule file you can create another field by joining both the EMPID, EMPNAME fileds.
This new fileld is concatination of both the EMPID, EMPNAME fileds and each attribute in this field will become unique as EMPID is unique.
    Do the Mapping as below.
    EMPID - GEN2,EMP
    EMPNAME - Ignore
    NewField - ALIAS2,EMP
