Endless Cascading Windows on the Desktop

My almost six-year-old iBook may be showing the first signs of dementia. Yesterday I started her up and saw a half-dozen windows cascading on the desktop--they were all open to the "my home" screen. I closed each of the six windows, only to find six more underneath; I closed those to find--you guessed it--more underneath. I restarted the computer and found the series of windows again.
Except for this oddity, everything else seems to be working fine. I can open everything else on the desktop, I can open all my apps and docs. Is this some sort of bug that can be easily addressed, or is this a sign of impending doom?
iBook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi Hillory
Could be dementia, would you like me to open a window? No. OK but do you want to open a window? No, its alright.
Hillory, what is "my home", an application that you are using? It seems to be running automatically.
10.3.9 has no widgets.
Are you running Yahoo "pseudo" widgets?
What is in Account > Start Up items ? Something to do with the app' "My Home"
Deselect any application in there that you are not familiar with or haven't intended to be there.
Then Restart.
Plus:
Aspirin medication:
Run Repair Permissions in the application Disk Utility, which is found in Applications/Utilities.
Still demented? If so post back.

  • Blinking Windows on the Desktop

Computer Dell Vostro 1510 with 2 GB RAM
Operating System: Windows XP with all service packs and updates
Recently I installed/updated Firefox to the latest beta version. That went well. The following day, I booted the laptop and windows on the desktop blinked in and out and shrank in size. If I double clicked on the shrunken window it would open and I could do some input. As long as the mouse pointer was on that window I was fine. If the pointer strayed away from that window or I had to go to another open window, the the blinking and shrinking would re-start.
I did check for viruses and malware and none were found. I have had this happen in the past with another beta version of FireFox and the only solution was to remove it. Firefox was never opened during the sessions.

That's very strange. If you check the Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc > Processes tab), if Firefox.exe running invisibly? If not, it's hard to see how Firefox is involved. ???

  • After successful install of Windows 7, the desktop edges are off the screen.  Please help.

I'd used the previous bootcamp and win xp just fine.  Just bought a new mac mini and a new copy of windows 7 (well, an upgrade where I did the clean install approach).  I have this mac mini approached to an LCD tv using an HDMI connection.
No matter what I've tried, I can't force the desktop to not be off the edges (unless I go to a super small resolution where it looks crappy).
The Lion/mac operating system does just fine with the LCD/HDMI connection.  In Windows, I've played around with the resolutions, ran an update for the graphics driver, and checked my TV settings for an "overscan" setting.
    None of the above worked.
I tried looking in the windows settings for something with the graphics card but I think I'm looking in the wrong area.  I've seen discussion boards talk about a "just scan' setting but I can't find that on my TV menus or in windows.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    No one?
I've been doing more research and it seems the issue may be in some setting with the graphics card but for the life of me I haven't been able to find it.  I have the new mac mini.  Anyone?
    Thanks.

  • [Solved] How to remove a transparent window on the desktop

    I am using KDE 4.5.3-1.

There appears to be a transparent window on my desktop, as shown by the shadow outline in this snapshot:

It appears with different wallpapers, and I can't seem to disable it. Right-clicking brings up the same context menu as outside the ghost window. Nothing in Desktop settings appear to control the appearance of this window. Restarting does not help.
I am not sure when it appeared...

  • How do i take control of an exsisting open window on the desktop?

(not actually by clicking it, more like windows os where its automatically the last used that you gain control of)
    my example is as follows:
i use excel spreadsheets to do invoicing for my business.  i use a folder named monthly invoices to track each customer. the folder has a subfolder with years>then months....  anyways after entering an invoice i use cmd w to save the doc and close it.  under excel when it closes is my 'months' folder which i need to directly access immediately.  the only way i kno how is to click the window to gain control.  are there any shortcuts i dont kno of?
when i was a pc, it would default to that window as the 'open window'' ---allowing me to immediately start typing to gain access to info. not so with my mac?

  • I deleted my desktop icon - now I can't save things to the desktop!

After a complete meltdown of my computer (and thank GOD I backed everything up!!) ... I'm transferring everything back to my iMac from an external drive ... BUT, I deleted the little "desktop" icon from my finder folder - or more like, I dragged a desktop folder from the external hard drive and "replaced" the desktop icon.
Now I can't save anything to the desktop. When I drag something to the desktop it says "The item cannot be moved because the 'desktop' cannot be modified."
Is there a way to get this back???

    No ...
Under "Ownership & Permission" is says "You can - Read & Write", so that's not the issue.
    What I did was:
When you open the finder window, there are several icons that appear in the window - usually the Desktop icon, the Home icon, the Applications icon, the Documents icon, the Movies icon, the Music icon and the Pictures icon.
What I did was, I dragged a "Desktop FOLDER" over from an external hard drive and it asked me if I wanted to replace the Desktop. I said "Yes" and now I no longer have the DESKTOP ICON on the left side of the finder window and I can no longer drag and drop things to the desktop.
The desktop icon no longer exists, so I can't access my desktop VIA the finder window.
    Does this make sense?

  • Pictures on the desktop

Does anyone know how to change the time period that photos will rollover on the desk top. Currently I have 5-second, 1, 5, 15 and 30 minutes. I want to hold the photos for 10-15 seconds before they change. Is there any way this can be achieved??

Yes, I figured so. My system behaves weirdly, regularly. Not only did it nopt come up, when I would highlight 'desktop...' in the preferences it would just vanish. Then I'd hit the back arrow, go back into preferences and eventually it would stay, but not show "background", but by going back over and over it finally worked. Then it did the same in my second user account- but, again, finally worked. Only in that account the background is oversized and the little "tile/center/stretch to fit/fit" window in the desktop doesn't appear and can't be found. All part of the weird world of Apple. I've actually lost everything after three months due to hd corruption, then three months later had to have the hd replaced. Apple chat is very helpful though and the service is excellent though shouldn't be needed.

  • Dragging to the desktop

Why can't I drag a photo to my desktop from iphoto.  I was always able to do this, and now it won't go.

Have you tried restarting the Mac?
There's no need to either drag or export for uploading. Check out the first of these:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Window Configuration on Desktop and temp disable New Window

    Hi All.
I seem to find myself constantly needing to arrange three or four windows in list mode so that I can move things from my Desktop, Laptop, Time Capsule and iDisk. Sort of a major sort mode if you will.
I always find myself arranging three or four sets of Finder Windows on the Desktop, snuggling them up against each other - all while trying to avoid too major an overlap or some kind of overlap configuration that lets me jump and jive from one window to another all while dragging and dropping files and folders.
Is there a better way to do this?
Is there a way to save this configuration?
Is there a way to use the laptop screen as a kind of second display where if I roll off the left hand side of my desktop window I end up in the Finder on my laptop (a stretch I know)?
Also(!) is there a way to temporarily prevent the Open Folder in New Finder Window action that I have set? Right now if I have the windows organized the way I need them - but I need to just open a subfolder on the ,say the Laptop Finder Window, I always end up with /another/ Finder window which I then have to figure out what to do with...
Can I automagically dock these things somehow?
Anyway, I have the added complication of not understanding Expose or Spaces yet as I have tried to stay away from them for fear that their buttons interfere with my MacBookPro buttons or the buttons I use when running WIndows in BootCamp (I know my understanding is totally butchered here but I figure to try to clear this up soon).
Thanks for anything wonderfully helpful on this.
    - Jon

You might try a third-party utility such as Witch to create window sets that can be configured and restored. Look for it and others at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

    Hi
Please take a look to this thread Re: Can I refresh the browser rather than open a new tab?

  • Open minimised window in the same desktop.

Do anyone know a preference, so when I open a minimised window, it doesn't open in the desktop from where it was minimised but in which I'm currently working...?

Dear you have to create relation between the blocks then you can achieve this like:
    1) Create two canvases in your form (canvas1 and canvas2).
    2) Create a window in your form with name Window2 now you have two windows (Window1 and Window2).
    3) now set the property 'Primary Canvas' of each window (Window1 = Canvas1, window2 = Canvas2)
    4) Now create database block of you main table with (CAT, NAME, DEPT) fields and select the Canvas1 in the layout wizard.
    5) Create another database block with same table but this time select only 3 fields (CAT,SAL, DATE) and at the time of creation mention relation between blocks in the Data block wizard (block1.cat = block2.cat) and select the Canvas2 in the layout wizard.
    6) Now create check box field name MASTER_CHBOX in first block and set Database Item property no of this check box item and set the Value When Checked property to Y and N for Value When unChecked.
    7) Create a trigger on CheckBox Item and paste below code in it.
    if :MASTER_CHBOX = 'Y' then
    show_window('WINDOW2');
    go_item('SAL');
    end if;
    Regards.

The section directly above is what I need to add, anyone have a clue how to make this work?

Bill:  Can you suggest a site?  I am in the weeds here trying to get this done yesterday.  I have been reading code and trying to figure this out since yesterday morning.  I have to roll out this image to 2 dozen machines and
this is holding us back.  Any idea which site I can post to for help?
The bigger issue is that you have been given the answer to this in many different forms and, because you have no technical background, you fail to see what is being shown to you.  That is why I have repeatedly suggested that you hire a consultant.
The link to the learning material is at the top o this page.  You can also search the web for Windows consultants.
In the learning link you can also look up how to manage files. If, in the beginning you had chosen to use the learning materials you might not be in this bind.
Look up and research the FileSystemObject.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
