Endless repairing permission using SL DVD

I booted from the Snow Leopard install disk and opened the disk utility. From there I chose to repair permissions.
It ran fine to about 80%, but since then reads heavily from the DVD (I hear the reading process of the moving parts very clear) and will not proceed anymore. There seems no progress anymore and I doubt after an hour that things are ok.
Any thoughts ?
Thanks and regards
Martin

Permissions, yes, and repairing permissions should be done while booted from the hard drive. Disk Utility cannot repair the +hard drive+, itself, while booted from it. To repair the hard drive, you need to boot from the Install disc of the version of the OS that is running or (my preference) start up in Safe Mode.
From that Apple Knowledge Base article to which you and den.thed have linked:
*Should I start up from a Mac OS X install disc to repair disk permissions?*
When possible, disk permissions should be repaired while started up from a Mac OS X volume (hard disk) that contains Mac OS X, instead of a Mac OS X installation disc. Mac OS X software updates may change permissions on some files to improve security. When this occurs, the version of Disk Utility on the Mac OS X volume is updated to account for the new permissions. Running Disk Utility while started from the Mac OS X volume ensures that the changes made by software updates are preserved.
This is exactly the portion of the Knowledge Base article which den.thed quoted above.

  • Using a DVD-R

    Can I use a S-Video to USB from a DVD player to my MacBook so that I can edit a DVD I burned of old family movies? I used an old VHS tape to record the DVD-R of the movies. I no longer have a VHS video camera.
    I tried using the DVD-R in the MacBook without luck.

    If you have a device called an EyeTV Hybrid from ElGato systems, you can connect the S-Video to the EyeTV Hybrid and import into your Mac as MPEG2. You then must convert the MPEG2 to an editable codec before importing into iMovie.
    A more straightforward way would be to buy the Apple MPEG2 Playback Component ($20) and MPEG Streamclip (free).
    Put your DVD into your Macbook. If DVD Player comes up, quit it. THen open the DVD in the finder.
    Open MPEG Streamclip. Drag the VOB files from the DVD to MPEG Streamclip. If it offers to repair timecodes say yes. In Streamclip, FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME. Choose Apple Intermediate Codec, and give the file a name. You can then import this file into iMovie.

  • Permission to copy dvds to my SSD for faster installation

    I would like permission to copy dvds to my SSD for faster installation.
    I would also like to know if the standard multi-volume installer methods work with Master Collection CS5 installation where discs are organized into

    DISK2\
    DISK3\
    what disc number for acrobat 9, if any?
    can I copy the content disc (no installer)?
    or do you use a different method? of course once it's on the SSD, it would be impossible to change discs as the installer currently requests using discs.

    I am concerned since the computer seems to be running a bit sluggish. I am especially having problems with iPhoto in Editing mode where it is locking up on me.
    Not sure if this is a sign of a bad hard drive since I have the alleged bad hard drive (Model: ST9100824AS Revision: 7.01)
    Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    First order of buiness when visiting these forums is to use the search feature. A search for SUID would have given you many answers. For example, Apple posted this a month ago: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306925
    As a final note, manually download and reinstall the 10.5.1 update. Then, repair permissions again. That's fixed the problem for me and a lot of others.

  • Using backup dvds in my macbookpro

    I had to backup my ibook (the harddrive was failing and I sent it in for repair) before I recieved my macbookpro. How do I use those dvds to transfer my data to my macbookpro? It's mostly pictures, documents, and a little music.

    Thanks, It worked fine with itunes but not with iphoto. photos were downloaded but too many copies, some just thumbnails, ect. Isn't there a way too just download the dvds and the info goes where it should go. I thought that was the point of a backup. I thought it would work, somehow, just opposite of putting the data onto the dvds. Can I undo the download to iphoto by putting everything in the trash?

    How can I install Snow Leopard on my 15" MacBook Pro without using its DVD drive?

    I'm assuming your dvd drive is broken? if you have a thumb drive large enough (8GB or better), you can use another computer to make a bootable image from the install dvd to the thumb drive. then you can install from the the thumb drive.

  • How can I use a DVD of my band playing a song to create a Premiere 11 music video?

    Hi Everybody,
    I've been making a couple of music videos on Adobe Premiere 11 by the usual way of loading in a music track and then adding photos and an occasional live video segment (with the sound of that video segment turned off). Now however, I have a DVD with both music and video of my band playing a song in a club. I'd like to load it into Premiere 11 so as to make it into a music video that also has a title screen at the beginning and one at the end (as I've done before on my other Premiere 11 music videos that I created). After, I'd plan on uploading the Premiere 11 music video to YouTube.
    My question: What steps would I use to load the DVD of both live video and live music into Premiere 11, that's on my laptop, so as to make a music video out of it on my Adobe software?
    I'd appreciate any feedback, especially since I'm kinda new at using Premiere 11.
    Thanks!

    Based on your description initially or latest report, I am interpreting your description as an easy can do in Premiere Elements 11.
    It would be good to know what is on the DVD disc (DVD-VIDEO format on DVD disc or some video files burned to the DVD disc as data disc).
    But, either way, your answer to using the DVD disc content as source media in your Premiere Elements 11 project is as follows....
    1. Insert the DVD disc in the burner tray.
    2. Open Premiere Elements 11 to its Expert workspace.
    3. Go to Add Media/DVD camera or computer drive/Video Importer.
    4. In Video Importer, assure that the Source field at the top is targeted at your drive with the disc in it
    a. you should see your video files on the DVD....if DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, then you need the check marks next to
    VTS_01_1.VOB and so on in the series of that file, such as VTS_01_2.VOB, VTS_01_3.VOB. Each file, except maybe the
    last one should have a file size of 0.99 GB. If instead someone has burned a bunch of video files (.mov, .mp4....) to a DVD disc
    as data disc, then you will find a bunch of files .mov, mp4 to which you will apply a check mark.
    b. In the Video Importer dialog, have a check mark next to Add to Timeline, then hit Get Media which will put the file(s) in Project Assets and on the Timeline.
    Please review and consider and then let us know if the above targeted what you asked.
    Thank you.

    Add On...More details are relevant such as project preset - you setting it manually versus the project setting it automatically.
    But, we will save that for next time if we are on the right track for your overall task.

    If it gets far enough to reject your serial number, it won't help to download it. It must have installed ok.

    Does it mention a "qualifying product" by any chance?

  • DVD Remote Control buttons don't work when using regular DVD player

    I created a DVD using DVD Studio Pro (version 3.0.2) and am unable to navigate through any menus or buttons using the DVD players remote control. I can press the play button on the actual DVD player and play the movie. How can I fix this issue? Any suggestions would be helpful!
    I never changed the default setting on the file I made and the DVD works just fine in the simulator as well as any computer DVD player. Also, is there a way to make sure the DVD will play on all DVD players even if it doesn't read burned DVDs?
    Thanks for the help!

    Not sure if I can add anything here - you're in good hands! I'd like to know how you constructed the menus - did you use photoshop layers for the background and overlay, or did you use a pict file? Are these motion menus or static?
    About the compatibility - a burned disc will only ever be about 85% compatible with the number of DVD players out there, and if a DVD player states that it cannot read from DVD-R or DVD+R discs then it most likely won't play your disc. The only way to approach full compatibility is to have the disc replicated, but the cost of this usually means it is not worth while for anything less than 500 to 1000 discs at a time. If you are using DVD±R then all you can do is take steps to make sure the disc is as compatible as it can be, such as keeping the MPEG encode less than 7.5MBPS, using AC3 audio, not applying paper labels and so on.
    Compatibility is getting better in general, this summer I have burned in excess of 90 individual projects on DVD-R (and duplicated each one up to seven times each) for playback on consumer players and only one came back (so far). When I looked at it there was a chunk missing from the surface of the disc, which probably explained the error!

    You can download the setup file again from this Link (Download Acrobat products | Standard, Pro | XI, X ) and Burn it to a DVD Disc using Windows Explorer.

  • Repair Order using BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2

    Hi,
      I am creating a Repairs order using the above BAPI, but it does not provide the functionality to add Servicable Material and Repair Information.
      there was a similar forum where it was mentioned to use 'SD_SALES_DOCU_MAINTAIN', I am not sure where to pass this info and if this FM is safe to be directly used..
    Regards,
    Kaustubh.

    Hi Kaustubh,
    We are using 'SD_SALES_DOCU_MAINTAIN' to create the Repair Order and its working fine for us. We came at this conclusion only after extensive testing and debugging the standard BAPI.
    The material vbapkom-matnr is 'REPAIR' in our case. You should check with your functional person about the same.
    You need to populate the vbapkom-zmeng (quantity).
    The servicable material field is vbapkom-matnr_g which is the actual material that needs repair.
    You also need to populate the vbapkom-menge_g which is the servicable material quantity
    Apart from this you have to populate the schedule line table vbepkom, partner table vbapkom and header structure.
    My call looks like this       CALL FUNCTION 'SD_SALES_DOCU_MAINTAIN'
            EXPORTING
              i_vbakkom                 = wa_vbakkom
              i_call_bapi               = 'X'
              suppress_availibility_dia = 'X'
              status_buffer_refresh     = 'X'
            IMPORTING
              e_vbak                    = wa_vbak
            TABLES
              ix_vbapkom                = lt_vbapkom
              ix_vbpakom                = lt_vbpakom
              ix_vbepkom                = lt_vbepkom
              return                    = lt_bapireturn
              ix_text_header            = lt_text_head.
    Do let me know if you need any other information.
    Regards,
    Shubham
    P.S.- You can also use the standard BAPI for doing this. But in that case you have to append fields matnr_g and menge_g to the item table vbap and then populate the extension table 'EXTENSIONIN' of the standard BAPI BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2.

    The only way to get 10.5 is to purchase it on CD. Such as http://www.amazon.com/Mac-OS-Leopard-10-5-10-51/dp/B0012RAVRC where is being sold for $179.99.
    If your optical drive is broken, you will either need to replace it or get an external. There is no other way.
    Why do wish to upgrade? As you can see it is going to be expensive, probably more the Mac is worth.
