Endless spinning wheel on shut down

If I boot up and do not initiate any software and then shut down, shut down occurs normally. If I initiate any software, I get a blue screen and the endless spinning wheel. I tried the repair disk and repair permissions from the startup disk, to no avail. This is something that began just recently, possibly with upgrading to 10.6.7 but I'm not sure. Safe boot makes no difference either.  I am running on a 2.8 GHz, i7, quad core.
Thanks,
Jacob

Hi Jacob,
Just to do a quick rundown on what you have done so far in terms of troubleshooting:
Repair Permissions.
Verify the start up disk. Does the disk utility indicates if "Macintosh HD appears to be OK"?
Boot from installer disk and use the" Repair Disk" option.
Now a few questions:
When you mean "initiate any software", do you mean like initiating software update or app such as Safari or iPhoto?
When was the last time you installed something on your computer?
I think you have done everything in regards to avoid a total system reinstall. But before we go with the steps of reinstalling the OS, I will suggest one more step, since you mentioned that the problem might have arised after installing 10.6.7.:
Reinstall OSX 10.6.7. Update via Combo updater:Get it from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1361
Report back after installing the combo update.
About combo updates as a trouble shooting steps (from Cnet):
Combo
Apple's Combo updater includes all the files necessary to bring a major release of OS X from any previous version to the one represented by the update. For example, if you have the OS X 10.6.7 Combo updater then you can use it to update any Mac from any version of OS X Snow Leopard to OS X 10.6.7.
While Software Update will also provide you with this option, the Combo updater, like the Delta updater, is more universal and can be applied to any Mac system, regardless of its hardware or software configuration. Additionally, it can be reapplied to a Mac that has already been updated. Because of this, a Combo updater is frequently used when troubleshooting odd problems in OS X since it can be used to essentially replace a number of system files with fresh ones, without requiring a full reinstallation of OS X.
Good Luck!

  • MBP won't boot - Grey Apple Screen, Spinning Wheel, then Shut Down

    Help please
For no apparent reason, my otherwise well-working MBP (2007 model) simply won't log in to OSX (leopard). I try to boot it up, and I get the grey screen with the Apple logo, the spinning progress wheel, and then after about 4 minutes, it just powers off.
    Thoughts?

I ran verify because the option to run repair was not available.
And just to make sure, you booted from the install disc? (Repair Disk is never available when booted on the boot volume of the HD.)
Here's a follow up... This mac wasn't doing it's airport backups properly,
I'm not quite sure what that means, maybe Time Machine? Time Capsule?
so I don't have a recent back up of the files. Would you suggest just sending the computer to a data recovery service?
Very expensive. Try FireWire Target Disk Mode first. If that doesn't work, I'd remove the HD, install it in an external enclosure (as low as $15) and see if it will boot the MBP or the data is accessible from another Mac.
Do you think I can just pop a new HD in it and it'll work fine under a full reinstall?
Doing my previous suggestions first may help to answer that. If there's absolutely nothing wrong with the HD, then that isn't the issue. If there is something wrong with it, likely a new HD is the fix.

  • IMac OS X Snow Leopard does not boot.  Turn on and it stays on gray screen with spinning wheel.  Shuts down after approx 1 minute.  How can I get in to troubleshoot?

    Need tips for troubleshooting

Put the disk that came with the Mac in the DVD/CD drive and start up holding down Command+C and hopefully the Mac will boot, albeit very slowly.
At the first screen choose your language (you are NOT going to re-install at this point) and from the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility. Once DU has launched select your Macintosh HD on the left and click on 'repair disk'. If it says it fixed anything click on 'repair disk' again until you get a clean pass. Restart as normal from the Apple menu.

  • Iphone 4S spinning wheel when shutting down has disappeared?

Does this condition need to be corrected.  It used to be very visible.  Now it is gone or so faint I cannot see it.  Does this mean data is not being saved?

Try emptying the Safari cache ...
From your Safari menu bar top of your screen click Safari > Empty Cache or Option + Command + E on your keyboard.
Keep in mind, some Flash based content requires a later version of Flash that can be installed on a Mac running Leopard v10.5.8 / Safari 5.0.6.

  • Checking for mail is an endless spinning wheel

When I check for email, I get the spinning wheel and "checking email" that gets hung up and will not change until I hard shut down and start up again, when all of my emails will appear. I have switched out several phones and it does not change the problem.

I have the same problem. the "connecting..." wheel spins and spins at the bottom of the mail program, but i can tell (from the lack of a spinning data wheel at the top of the screen) that no data is coming or going. if i exit mail, the internet seems to work fine. so i am convinced it is a problem with the mail program.
I have an old 8GB iphone, not a 3G. though the problem seems to have only begun since i installed the new 2.0 firmware.
I find that a reboot solves it, only temporarily. Though as others have noted, it happens too often, multiple times a day, so I don't think rebooting every time the problem occurs is a feasible solution.
anyone else know what the problem may be? could it be a problem with the 2.0 firmware?
    thoughts? fixes?

  • Imac intel won't restart, I get gray screen and spinning wheel then shut off

My imac intel only restart after running disk utility, otherwise I get a gray screen with apple logo and spinning wheel then after about 2min it shuts off.  this all started after a power outage.  I have tried everything that I have read online to fix this, it seems doing a clean install is last resort. Does anyone have any other options for me?

I have tried disconnecting the periperals, restarting in "safe boot", resetting the pram and I tried starting up in single user mode.  It will only start up if I start up from the original gray 10.4 start up disk and run "repair disk"....I get errors including "The underlying task reported failure on exit".  I then eject the disk and restart and it works fine but if I have to shut down or restart for any reason it's back to the gray screen.
Your system profile confirms you are using OS 10.5.8.  Boot up from your OS 10.5.x install dvd.  Use the "repair disk" setting.  If you get the same error, then run Apple Hardware Test from your original system dvd.

  • Logout:  white screen + endless spinning wheel

    Hi,
We're using our 2011 IMAC at home with 4 users of our family; each of us has it's own login. When one of our kids logs-off, he turns to get a white screen with a spinning wheel (not always, but undefined frequently). The problems seems to be initiated after the Mavericks 10.9.4 patch, but still exist after 10.9.5.
Please help, as the only option we have is to restart the machine every crash.
Also no error log has been saved...

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Imac gets stuck on spinning circle when shutting down

I have had my mac for only 1 year and still getting use to the troubleshooting. My Imac keeps getting stucking on spinning circle when I shut down or reboot. I have unplugged all my external hard drives and printer. Nothing seemed to work. Can someone point me in the right direction.
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
    4gb Ram
Processor  2.5 GHz Intel Core i5

You might want to make sure that there are no open applications when you shut down, one of them may be hanging your Mac trying to shut down. Another thing to look for is to make sure that there are no print jobs that are not complete. Open the print and scan preference pane, double click your printer and see if any things hanging there.

  • Very long blue screen with spinning sprocket at shut down

When I shut down my Mac Mini, after everything closes properly I get a blue screen with a spinning sprocket for a very long time. I end up having to power down and restart. It happens most of the time, interupted with an occasional proper shut down.
Any ideas on what this means?
    Thanks for your time.
    Kevin

Check Console in Utilities for messages from around the time of the shutdown. Check system.log expecially, but look around at some of the other logs as well. Also, try booting in Verbose Mode, CMD-V at startup. This will scroll text of the bootup sequence before it goes to the regular screen, but the next time you shutdown, it might scroll text of the shutdown sequence and give a clue as to what's going on there. Be ready with a camera or notepad to write down what you see.

  • HELP ENDLESS SPINNING WHEEL FREEZES PREMIER PRO

When I open Pr it loads content, gives me the yellow content not loaded screen and then freezes with the spinning wheel. many times. help... project due friday NEED to export

    Hello Naviira,
please read all my proposals first, so you can better choose the first step:
    1. Maybe you have to activate/deactivate, so please have a look there:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-deactivation-products.html
    2. Sometimes, we know in the meantime, the "opm.db file" is the culprit. In this case you should delete it.
    3. Did you already try "uninstalling and re-installing"? Be careful with (de)installing aso. by (de)installing by your own resources. As much as I regret it and as strange as it may seem I fear it's a challenge for Adobe's Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. Sometimes - for whatever reasons - CC doesn't "want" to work. In this case you should CC completely delete and reinstall by help of Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. (A try to uninstall by own resources is not enough!)
I quote: Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool helps resolve installation problems for Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Creative Suite (CS3-CS6) applications. The tool removes installation records for prerelease installations of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications. It does not affect existing installations of previous versions of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications.
Please use: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html   and follow the prescribed sequence of operations
    4. If necessary and for further questions click through http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html or http://helpx.adobe.com/de/contact.html and if "open" please use chat, I had the best experiences. I quote from Preran: The chat button is activated as soon as there is an agent available to help.
    Good luck!

  • Endlessly spinning wheel in Viewer Builder

    Hi everyone,
We just Tried to produce a new App woth Viewer Builder. unfortunately the process seems to be hang up. Every step went fine and the production process started successfully.
But the productn never ends. It's about three hours now, and the wheel still spins. Also after we rebootet the Mac.
We were able to produce the App with a second job, which successfully ended after acouple of seconds (as it usually is). So we don't have a pressure here in terms of time.
Still we don't want a broken App with a spinning wheel in our Viewer Builder. Especially because we are not the only ones from the company that use this account.
Is there a way to stop this broken process? It's not possible to end or delete it.
Or is there anyone, who I can contact because of this issue?
    Thanks in adavance,
    Richard

Yes we are using the newest version. A client of ours is experiencing the exact same problem with a completely different setup (different location, different mac, different accounts, different app)
Maybe it has something to do with the ftp server restart AdobeDigitalPub mentions on twitter
(@richardbrammer is it still happening? We restarted one of our servers earlier this morning due to slow FTP transfers.)
    Bets regards,
    Richard

  • Downloaded iTunes update.  Clicked to restart but am stuck on gray screen with an endlessly spinning wheel.

Downloaded iTunes update to my Mac mini (2007).  Pressed restart but computer is hung up on a gray screen with a spinning wheel.  Doesn't respond to power switch.  Disconnected but returns to same screen when plugged back in.

FWIW, have a look at this user tip.

  • Mac hangs at white screen with spinning with loading wheel while shutting down.

I've had a problem with my computer recently that really bugs me, because I been needing to install os x updates, but when i try to shut my computer down, it hangs at a white screen with the grey loading wheel forever until I forcibly shut it down. This has been bugging me a lot, and when I try other peoples' solutions, (e.g. resetting NVRAM, uninstalling apps), I can't figure out what apps to uninstall, and resetting the NVRAM is no luck. I have a console log of the shutdown here:

  • IMac G4 starts up to gray apple screen progress wheel, then shuts down.

I was trying to boot to an external drive when this started. I was holding down key combinations (I think at the time it was Option-Command-Del), and the screen went black. Power Off.
Now, even after resetting PRAM and PMU, among other things, the same process occurs:
    1) I press Power Button.
    2) Chimes.
    3) Gray screen, progress wheel. Little sound inside. Wheel stops.
    4) iMac shuts off by itself.
When trying Verbose mode, I see it says "CPU Halted" the second before it shuts off.
    Any ideas, masters of mac?

Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption.
It's worth trying the repairs several times with fsck or DU, you never know. But, more then likely you will need a more robust utility, DiskWarrior, to repair that fairly serious error. It costs a few bucks, but if your data is worth saving DW may fix it.
We always recommend users, here, have at least one backup drive. I have two bootable backups. I have had backups also go bad, so two seems safer to me!
    Cheers!
