Endnote references

I placed a Word document in InDesign (CS 5.5, Windows) which has both footnotes and endnotes. Everything imported ok, but the endnote references in the text are normal position, I'd like them to be superscript. I can't do a Find/Change because there’s no choice for endnote markers in "special characters for search". I can do a search for any digit preceded by a period, but when I change that to superscript the period gets changed also. I imagine there's some way of doing this using GREP, but I wouldn't be able to figure that out on my own. Thanks.

This is a GREP search query, not a text search. I suspect you are on the wrong tab...
You could change it to (?<=\.)~}? ?\d+ which will find close quote or space, or both, or neither, before the digit(s), but you'll need to run a second search for ~} in superscript to change that back, and a third search for spaces in superscript which you should probably replace with nothing (I thought it would be possibile to eliminate that third one by using (?<=\.)(~}?)( ?)(\d+) and replacing with $1$3, which works if there is a quotation mark with or without a space, but not if there is a space without the quote)

  • No Boolean searches for Endnote references in Pages?

    Dear All,
    I use Endnote heavily in technical papers and grants and have tried the new Pages 09 with Endnote X2. I really like Pages since it handles integrated text and graphics so well whereas Word really does not do that well. However,the Endnote search function in Pages appears to be quite limited, as far as i can tell, to a single word or phrase. It does not appear possible to search, for instance, for an author and a word in the title to narrow the search results. So if I want to search my Endnote database of references for all papers with "Smith" as author and that also contain "cholesterol" in the title I can't do it. Am I correct in assuming that this can't be done with the Pages search engine? Also, there does not appear to be a way to insert references from Endnote directly, so I can't do the search in Endnote and insert the reference into Pages. I would love to be wrong. Thanks in advance for any help!

    You are correct that there doesn't seem to be a Boolean search function from within Pages.
    In Endnote X2 itself, if you use the quick search function you can search author & title or author & title & keyword etcetera. For example, I put in Shakespeare as author and Hamlet as title and came up with two references in my library. I then generated a subject bibliography and inserted that into the Pages document. It is also possible to save references into Groups. There is quite a lot on managing Groups and sub-groups in the Endnote help menu.
    Hope that helps.

  • Endnote/Reference Misnumbering in the text body

    Hi,
    I have been working on a relatively long academic paper which involves the use of around 100 or so endnotes. As I am referencing during drafts which then require to move certain pieces of text around (copy and past or dragging references) it appears to have corrupted the number continuation. I now have a problem where the reference numbers in the main text are not showing the correct number. For e.g. I have reference note 14 in the text, which I then cut and paste further down in my document. It should then be reference number, say 25, but instead shows '2' or some other number.
    Any ideas how to correct this? Thanks.

    had the same issue as the original poster and neither switching to plain text or setting the two Attachment options in the Edit>Attachments menu to always send Windows friendly attachments and place the attachments at the end of the message suggestion has solved the issue as yet - nor has the "View as Icon" suggestion, is there anything else to try? When they reply to their email comes back with the images attached so there's something not right somewhere at their end of things too I'd guess. None of this happened before we bought new Macs with Lion pre-installed.

  • How to reorder superscript (endnote references) not that the document is type set?

    OK, did a DUMB thing.  I didn't stop to figure out how to use Peter Kahrel's script for endnotes BEFORE I went and typeset the 400+ page document and now some of the endontes need to be removed. Is there a GREP way (I dont' get the GREP thing yet, dont' know the language) or better, find/change way to reorder the superscripts so I dont' have to go through one by one and change them??? (Using CS5.5)
    Please help or I may DIE or kill myself, whatever comes first...
    Thankzz

    Prospects for your health are not good, I'm afraid.
    These numberes are now "dumb" numbers. They have absolutely nothing to do with InDesign's Paragraph numbering. The only way to change them is to look for each superscript number and change it to the one required. (Which indeed is tedious, especially when you have, or suspect you have, superscripted numbers in your text that are NOT endnote.)
    If you were prudent and have been using character styles for your note numbers, you can do yourself a big favor by temporarily adding a thick, brightly coloured underline to this style. That'll make'em stand out a bit.
    Updating the note list at the end of the chapter is something else. Step 1: remove obsolete notes. Step 2: remove existing note numbers. Step 3: add new numbers with Paragraph Numbering. Step 4: convert auto-numbering to text.
    Only for step 2 you need the dreaded GREP find-and-replace. Look for
    ^\d+
    and replace with nothing. These codes will look at the start of each paragraph (^) and any number of digits (\d+). Make sure to select the correct text range and the Find/Change is set to "Selection".

    I suggest you use DropBox, OneDrive, Box.com or one of the other free cloud services.

  • How do I make endnotes?

    Hello all,
    I found the below instructions for making endnotes, but have run into some trouble and would truly appreciate your guidance.
    Create an endnote
    Type the first endnote at the end of the document and assign it the paragraph format for endnotes. The paragraph format should include an autonumber so the endnotes will be numbered consecutively.
    Jessie: I've done this--I created paragraph formats Endnote1 (the first number for a numbered endnote list) and Endnote (second+ items in an endnote numbered list). I have typed my two endnotes at the end of the document and have applied the formats, and they number correctly.
    Click where you want to insert the endnote reference and cross-reference the endnote. Use the cross-reference format you created for endnotes.   For example, if endnote references are to be displayed in superscript, and if the document contains a Superscript character format, the cross-reference format <Superscript><$paranumonly> displays the autonumber of the endnote paragraph as a superscript.
    [Jessie: This is where I have trouble, and I don't entirely understand these instructions. I typed a "1" for my first endnote where it needs to be. I highlighted it and created a Superscript character format. Next, I want to cross-reference that supercript 1 to my Endnote1 paragraph format, which is the first item in my endnote list. I highlight the superscript 1 and go to the Cross Reference panel.
    Once I go into the Cross Reference panel, I select "Endnote1" and click the corresponding text that appears to the right. THEN, I go down to the Reference/Format drop-down menu, where I am supposed to chose the format of the cross reference. Since none of the ones there apply (Chapter number, section number, etc) I clicked Edit Format. I named a new one "EndnoteReference"....but I don't know what to do in the Definition Box! I don't know what building blocks I am supposed to use, etc
    Anyone who can explain to me how to simply cross-reference my superscript endnote to the actual endnote text at the end of the document will help me go from this to this
    Thank you in advance!!!
    Jessie

    Arnis,
    Thank you for replying.
    I just did as you said. In the cross reference panel, I clicked Edit Format and put those tags in the Definitions box.
    They cross-reference perfectly. The only problem is now my body text endnotes look like this:
    How do I get rid of the <superscript> in front of my endnotes?
    Thank you!!!

    Pages for iPad does not support export/import of Endnote references in the form of formatted bibliography.

    Yes, indeed, feedback directly to Apple is possible

    While Pages does not currently import/export and preserve the Endnote formatted bibliography, another app known as Documents to go does; there is not citation software for adding references though, but preservation is good.

  • Opinion on Endnote X3 and Pages 09

    I'm considering purchasing Endnote X3 for use with both Pages 09 and Word 2008. I'd be interested in any anecdotal feelings, criticisms, and experiences that some of you may already have. Do you consider your purchase of Endnote a worthy edition for use with Pages?
    My goal is to eventually use Pages more than Word for day to day work, and Endnote would be helpful in that regard.
    Also, can I use Endnote with both Word and Pages on the same Mac? I'm not speaking of using the same document in both programs, but strictly separate projects. But say, for instance, I have a master list of sources in Endnote, can the program and sources be used with both word processors?
    Thanks.

    Hi Rick, Endnote works fairly well with Pages – even though the integration could still be improved. As I also have come to prefer writing with Pages I would go for it.
    Of course, you can use the same Endnote library for both your Pages and your Word documents.
    The only thing that I find a true nuisance is that the Endnotes references will be lost as such if you transform a Pages document into a Word document. All your Endnote references will be turned into ordinary text.This is a real obstacle to sharing files if you intend to work on them with somebody else.
    Best, Nick

  • How to place footnotes and endnotes on the same page?

    I have a word document with nearly about 64 footnotes and 500 endnotes. Endnotes are basically references guiding to other sources which are quoted in the book.
    My client has asked me to place all endnotes (references) of each page at the bottom of the page itself along with footnotes, but they shouldn't merge with footnotes. The reason for that he related that it makes easier for the reader to check the reference of the quote immediately at the bottom of the page, instead of flipping over all the pages and going to the end of the book everytime.
    How to do this? Can anyone enlighten me?

    Endnote placeholders are usually customizable to wherever you want them to be.

    I'm not sure if you're asking this question from a aesthetic design perspective or from a functionality perspective.
    Either way, I guess this link should give you some clarity: http://carijansen.com/2010/11/13/footnotes-and-endnotes-with-indesign/
    Also, there is already a thread in this forum that should answer your question - http://forums.adobe.com/thread/681891

  • How do you start endnote numbering over in each section?

    How do you start endnote numbering over in each section?

    Breaking the threads between sections won't help you, since the endnotes
    and the endnote references in the text are completely static, regular
    text. (However, if this is a long document, breaking the thread between
    sections/chapters can significantly speed up InDesign, and it's one of
    the first things I do when working on long docs.)
    Now, presumably your endnotes references in the text have a character
    style applied to them? Likewise, hopefully your endnote references at
    the beginning of each endnote also have a character style applied to
    them? If not, the first thing to do is apply a char style to these (make
    2 styles -- one for the refs in text, the other for the numbers at start
    of endnotes).
    Next, is to find a script that can do maths based on a character style.
    Must be one around somewhere...  ... yup, here
    you go:
    http://indesignsecrets.com/free-script-to-change-all-numbers-in-a-document-using-math.php
    So, now you just need to run the script, figure out how much to subtract
    from each character style for each section so that the first note is 1,
    and Bob's your uncle.

  • Endnotes in CS3?

    'Allo 'allo 'allo. Question: I typeset a document with endnotes (they were changed from footnotes in Word and then poured into InDesign pages). I am trying to get rid of one endnote reference, and have all the other endnotes re-number automatically. I highlight the reference number in the text and hit "delete," but no automatic re-numbering.
    Am I doing something wrong, or does it not do automatic re-numbering for endnotes? PLEAAAAAASE tell me I'm doing something wrong. If I have to renumber all of these footnotes, I will be in a mood to SMITE!!!!

  • EndNote X3

    I've just acquired EndNote X3 which claims to be compatible with Pages '09 but I can't even find EndNote Citation(s) in the Insert menu. Can anyone help please?
    Also, I understand that my EndNote references won't convert properly if I convert the Pages file to Word. Is this the case? Is there any remedy?
    Should I simply forget about using Pages '09 and use Word instead?
    Thanks

    Michael - have you been to the Endnote home pages? Here is a link for the 10.6 compatibility
    _http://www.endnote.com/enosx.asp_
    They have also a forum. Maybe there are others having your problem to. And they have on-line tutorials.
    Sorry I can't help you more.
    On page 64 in the Pages User Guide it is described how to "Adding Citations and Bibliographies Using EndNote". It starts 'To add and edit a citation:
    Place the insertion point where you want the citation to appear in your document, and choose Insert > EndNote Citation.'

  • Renumbering Endnotes

    Do anyone know of, or can point me in the right direction on a script which would renumber endnotes and endnote references.
    For example I have 10 endnotes numberered 1 to 10
    1 texttexttexttextex
    2 textextextextextextexte
    3 textextextextex
    and in the actual job onlu reference which are superscript numbers (like footnotes)
    so if one gets deleted or added I can then run the script which will look for the reference numbers and renumber them to be be in the correct number order.
    Then renumber all the endnotes as well.

    Try Teus' script to increase/decrease endnote numbers at:
    http://www.teusdejong.nl/thome/ho_body5.html#scripts
    That said, it errored out on me; have just emailed Teus to ask how to resolve it. :)

  • Group by at diferente levels of a three (connect_by_root like in 9i)

    Hi,
    I'm working with version 9ir2 (9.2.0.4 - 9.2.0.6) and need to do something like connect_by_root, but at diferent leveles.
    The table acting as a tree is for the areas/departaments of the company
    Level Use
    1st Company itself
    2nd Administration, Production
    3rd Directions
    4th Departaments
    5th Sub-departments
    I need to group diferent reports at the 3rd and fourth levels, the 3rd level must sum/count 3rd itself and fourt to n. The same is for 4th level.
    I could do it for 3rd level, but don't imagine how to do for 4th level at the same time on the same query.
    Any help is welcome.
    Thanks in advance

    It should be possible to modify the following macro to achieve what you are after:
    ' Macro created 29/09/99 by Doug Robbins to replace endnotes with textnotes at end of document
    ' to replace the endnote reference in the body of the document with a superscript number.
    Dim aendnote As Endnote
    For Each aendnote In ActiveDocument.Endnotes
    ActiveDocument.Range.InsertAfter vbCr & aendnote.Index & vbTab & aendnote.Range
    aendnote.Reference.InsertBefore "a" & aendnote.Index & "a"
    Next aendnote
    For Each aendnote In ActiveDocument.Endnotes
    aendnote.Reference.Delete
    Next aendnote
    Selection.Find.ClearFormatting
    Selection.Find.Replacement.ClearFormatting
    With Selection.Find.Replacement.Font
    .Superscript = True
    End With
    With Selection.Find
    .Text = "(a)([0-9]{1,})(a)"
    .Replacement.Text = "\2"
    .Forward = True
    .Wrap = wdFindContinue
    .Format = True
    .MatchWildcards = True
    End With
    Selection.Find.Execute Replace:=wdReplaceAll
    If you can send me a copy of the document, or put a copy of it in a folder on your OneDrive that you set to be shared and post a link to it back here, I will have a go at making the necessary modifications.

  • Keep italics while styling text from Word

    I have a long book with loads of endnotes. I've gotten them to come in with italics preserved. However, I still need to reset the styles for them. But any change kills all italics. Is there a way to re-style the text in general and preserve the existing italics? There are hundreds of these, so going back to touch every one is an evil undertaking.

    Will do. In this case, I just needed to maintain italicized titles within endnotes. All of the endnotes are being stripped from their sections of this book and compiled in their own section in the back. So, once I bring in the content, I'm free to move them around. The issue has always been that my client never quite follows the style rules they are given to make the process flow easier. They overlap styles, apply random fonts, etc which I have not been able to get InDesign to suck in and map correctly. So, while the endnote style I mapped is applied to all of them, they still have a bogus Times Roman font applied on top. When I option + click my style, it kills off the italics in the reference titles. Same happens for the endnote reference numbers sometimes.
    But, you're Find + Replace steps worked perfectly. I now know a little bit more about Find + Replace strategy. If I did more pubs of this sort, I would surely like to find ways to cut off all this issues at the pass. This pub occurs biennially so, the pain and proposed solutions fade between hits. All of the data in the pub, we have split out in Excel, which works great–tables, charts, graphs etc.
    This is number 4. If the fifth one is on the table in 2012, or any others that may occur, do you have any recommended reading that covers a solid process for handling 200+ pages of endnoted content from Word...besides relying on clients to actually follow the instruction provided to them?
