Endnotes in pages

I'm trying to help a newcomer to MacBook Air and Pages, but know nothing of either.
This person is assigned a term paper that uses endnotes rather than footnotes. In other words, at the end of sentences I want to insert small superscript number and have it refer not to a number footnotes, but to a page at the end of the paper holding the endnotes.
When I click on the Insert icon, I am given the option to insert a footnotes, but the "EndNote Citation" is greyed out. Does this import a citation from the EndNote application? I don't want to do that, but simply place footnotes on a separate page at the end.

Yours is the first reply to a post of mine that solved my problem! Thank you very much.
The answer for those who come to this thread is yes. Pages '08 does support endnotes.

  • A big problem with using endnotes in Pages 5

Unlike Pages 09 which worked flawless with endnotes functionality, Pages 5 has a big problem with the feature that maybe been addressed.
When I insert an endnote, I am prohibited from clicking the citation number at the end of the document which is supposed to take me back to the inserted citation.
Am I doing something wrong here or this is just another invaluable feature removed by Apple?
    Please help!!!
    Thank you.

It's not a feature I use much, so haven't worked at finding the flaws in the Pages 5 version, but going on just how badly Apple has done everything else in Pages 5 I am not at all surprised. It had problems from the beginning and Apple has take over 15 months to do frankly very, very little to fix anything.
There was much heated debate by certain people on this site who swore blind that Apple would fix everything.
    Just remember the definition:

  • How to install endnote in pages 5.5.3?

I've been trying to install endnote in pages 5.5.3. I used the plugin provided through the help menu. I closed all applications and I have re-started the system. The installation appears to go well. Any suggestions for a fix or other people having the same problem?
Is there any other way to automatically add cited works?

You must have EndNote X6 or later installed to use the plug-in you downloaded from here. This EndNote v2.0 plug-in dates back to Oct. 2013 and specifies Mavericks and Pages v5.0. It simply may not work with Yosemite and Pages v5.5.3. Apparently, Thomson-Reuters expects partner integration for compatibility with Pages '09, and v5. That means they expect Apple to keep up with plug-in compatibility. T-R EndNote compatibility page.

  • How do I add footnotes/endnotes in Pages for iPad 2?

Hi everyone. Like many people I was super excited to be able to use my iPad 2 as a word processor with the Pages app. I have a macbook black from 2007 and it is extremely heavy to carry around everyone. I'm a graduate student so mobility for me is key.  Anyway, so I am writing an academic paper write now in Pages for iOS but I can't figure out how to add footnotes/endnotes to cite my sources. I can't find anything online relating to this topic. Can you tell me how to do this? I certainly hope Pages has this capability because without something so fundamental, how can it be the least bit useful? Thanks so much!

It is not built in, but you can at least create and edit footnotes (I do not use end notes, but from limited testing, it appears to work with endnotes as well but converts them to footnotes). It sounds complicated when you break it down into steps as I do below, but it really is easy and intuitive.
FIRST: The underlying concept. If you have the latest Pages for iPad, then when it imports a Word document it imports footnotes (and endnotes) and you can edit them.
With that in mind, here is how you can create footnotes on the iPad.
#1 In Word create a one short sentence shell text with a short footnote, like "See the cat run /fn1" "fn/1 The cat was black").
#2 Import that shell document into your iPad, say with email "open using Pages."
#3 Save that shell document as your sour dough starter so to speak.
#4 Now create your new Pages iPad document.
#5 When you are ready to create your FIRST new footnote, copy and paste the shell sentence with shell footnote from your saved starter shell document into your new iPages document.
#5. Edit the shell sentence and footnote to a real sentence and footnote in new document.
#6 Thereafter, as you add new footnotes, either copy / paste one from new document or shell and edit. You will see they renumber properly, even when moved.

  • *** - no footnotes & endnotes in Pages for iPad?!

OK - I just got an iPad and am in general fairly happy about it. But I had a big *** moment, after I purchased Pages and tried to open a document I had been working on on my Mac. Guess what - iPad Pages won't import footnotes and endnotes!
Does anyone know if Apple is planning on changing this in an upcoming release? This is truly unacceptable. How can Apple expect all of its student customers to use it, not to mention other academics? This strikes me as a large portion of their customer base. What's worse, the advertising leads one to believe that, besides some complex formatting, everything you can do on Pages for Mac can also be done on Pages for the iPad.
Has anyone found a workaround to this 'bug'? I don't know whether Apple did this intentionally or not, but it's a very serious drawback of the app.
I will tell my student friends not to download Pages for iPad, until this is fixed. Apple - get with it!
A loyal but disappointed Apple customer

I agree with most of what you are trying to get across, except that I think there are a few problems when applied to the issue at hand (footnotes on iPad Pages).
    1) Yes, I agree the OP could have found out. I haven't bought an iPad yet, and this is one of the reasons (along with issues with Keynote), and the fact that I until these things are solved, my MacBook Pro works fine. However, here are a few lines right from Apple's product page on the iTunes store...
    - View and edit existing documents by importing Pages '09 or Microsoft Word files from Mail attachments or web.
    - Share your work by exporting to Pages '09, Microsoft Word, or PDF and sending it via Mail. …
    - Transfer documents between Mac or PC and your iPad using File Sharing in iTunes.
Now, combine that with the fact that this isn't called 'Pages Lite' or iPadMiniWrite... one sure gets the impression that things are going to be more seamless. Not even a little asterisk noting some feature difference in files or that you lose certain document aspects when going back and fourth. You'd have to be fairly tech-savvy to pick up the word 'export' and 'import' and imply this from that. One would guess that for MS Word or some other word processor, but not when the app has the same name and the above statements are made.
    2) Yes, I realize footnotes aren't trivial, but they are a basic feature of every word-processor I've ever used (mail merge probably as well)..... I'm pretty sure even back on computers with several times less processing power and RAM than the iPad has. There are some incredibly complex applications for the iPad. Unless there is some really crazy limitation I can't conceive of, footnotes aren't a technical limitation issue.
    3) I'm not blaming Apple for anything other than being pretty unclear about this. Make it clear... then let the user decide. While I love Apple, this is walking a pretty fine line near deception IMO. I do remember finding this out and being somewhat ******-off at the time because I had been tricked after the keynote (speech), and reading EVERYTHING I could find on the topic. This didn't come out until some real reviewers got their hands on one and discovered and exposed it. I certainly wasn't the only one who was shocked by this. That isn't cool, and isn't the Apple I know.
    4) I don't really think it is an unfair complaint. This is something Apple should implement (and hopefully will)... and be clear about until then. At the very least, if the iPad can't support footnotes, it should at least somehow preserve them in the file so that if you save and go back to the desktop, it hasn't stripped them out.
BTW, sorry for inferring you were a fanboy... and welcome to the world of Apple. I think you'll find that long-time Apple users can be extremely critical of Apple products when we feel they aren't living up to expectations in some way. And, believe it or not, Apple often does listen..... which I think is at least part of what has made them a great company.

  • Having problem adding citations using endnote with pages 4

    Help needed
When I go to insert and find a quote in my endnote library and hit insert it appears as if it has done something but no quote appears in my pages document however something is in there because it moves the curser along and when I press delete it acts as if it is deleting something.......wierd.  Ive downloaded and installed the plug in and the same thing seems to work fine on my Imac.

If all your professors are using MS Office, then I recommend you should too.  It is not realistic to think Pages will always generate word format docs the same way MS Office would have done so.

  • Problems with Endnote in Pages 5.

    Hello!
I use Pages 5 to write my essay and I manage my references in EndNote X7. I installed the v. 2 plugin for Pages but I experience some problems with citations and bibliography in Pages. Firstly, the citations are not numbered correctly, as you can see in the first screenshot. I don't know if it is an error or not but the option "Manage citations" is greyed out. Do you know where the problem is? I'm running a MacBook Pro Early 2011, OS X 10.9.1, latest version of Pages and EndNote X7.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Instructions for converting footnotes to endnotes in Pages not working

Help for Pages on the iPad says that when you tap any notes all notes will be highlighted with a blue frame. At that point you're supposed to be given the option to convert notes from one location to the other.
Tapping foot notes does not cause notes to be highlighted with a blue frame on my machine.
    What am I overlooking?
    Thanks,
    Eric Weirv

I was mistaken. The instructions do work. It was my expectations about what a "highlighted frame would look like that were off. I was expecting it to be fairly obvious. What you get is a faint, very thin, blue line around each note. Barely different from the normal appearance of notes you've tapped into. Once noticed, though, the instructions work fine.

  • I pasted several chapters from another document with endnotes into a book document with pre-existing endnotes.  Since I have numerous pages of the same endnotes and Pages software is uber slow.  What do I  do?

How do to combine documents both with endnotes?  When I tried, I got multiple copies of the same endnotes and very slow word processing.  thanks

If you are wondering why you are not getting any responses, it is because you have vented a complaint without any details that make any sense or give anyone something to work on.
If you want help, I suggest actually detailing what has happened, with versions of software etc. Anything that would let us assist.
As a start I am guessing that you have not really got the hang of "How it all works". Firstly download the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf from under the Help menu. Read that and view the Video Tutorials in the same place. A good addition would be the iWork 09 Missing manual book and something to help you learn how to use your Mac.

  • Can not use Endnote "manage citations" in Pages 5.0

    hello there,
Is ther any way to modify the citation format in Pages 5.0? My Pages 5.0 has a function "manage citations" in edit - endnote citations, but unfortunately, it can not be changed to a format that I prefer (such as Amecian Antiquity). can someone help me out?

Probably but I can'r be sure, because it may require you to have EndNote installed.
Do a search on EndNote plugin + Pages 5 and see what you come up with.
I read somewhere that Apple has created a plug-in but it has problems, otherwise you have to purchase a full copy from EndNote and as I said that is not cheap.
If you previously had Pages '09 it should be in your Applications/iWork folder. Try that and it should still be working.

  • Pages 5 Document Endnotes doesn't allow text continuation onto next page?

For large blocks of endnote citations, Pages 5 doesn't all the text to flow down to the end of the page before going to the next. Rather it treats the endnote text area as its own section, thereby moving the entire text box to the next page. This is problematic from a formatting standpoint because it wastes page space, does anyone have a workaround or suggestions?
    Example:
Citation 5 is long but I would like to keep it on the same page as Citation 4 and just let the text continue onto the next page. However Pages 5 doesn't allow me to adjust the endnote text box and just jumps to the next page. Rarely do you see endnotes arranged in this manner in high-level research reports and we can't have this.

I exported a PDF from Pages v5.2.2. This uses Apple's Quartz PDFContext, not Quark.
In Windows 7, I opened this PDF with Adobe Acrobat Reader v11.0.09. I then copied/pasted a paragraph of this PDF content into LibreOffice Writer (v4.3.2.2). Since there was Baskerville in Windows 7, this comment pasted correctly including font-size. I did not have to make any adjustments to LO to accept this text.
On Ubuntu Linux 14.04, with the latest updates, I opened the same PDF in Evince, the default PDF viewer. Adobe does not offer an Acrobat Reader download for Linux. Again, I copied and pasted a paragraph of content from the PDF viewer into LibreOffice Writer. As there was no Baskerville installed, Writer defaulted to the Liberation font, at the correct point size.
In either of these platform scenarios, there were no anomalies with sentence/paragraph newlines .vs. carriage return issues from the PDF document during copy/paste operations. These were default control-v pastes that did not use the Paste Special menu item in LibreOffice.

  • Is it possible to create endnotes that restart with each section in Pages that will stay that way in epub?

I can create section endnotes in Pages, no problem. When I export to epub, the notes are all there and the links work perfectly, but the numbers run continuously throughout the document. Is it possible to create section endnotes in Pages that will survive the epub export?

I have a now-you-see-it now-you-don't and now-you-see-it-again suggestion from someone on this forum to try the new Pages upgrade which says it delivers improved epub export. Whoever you are--thanks for the suggestion--but I tried it and it doesn't make any difference to the notes, or anything else so far as I can tell.

  • How can I use other endnote bibliography formats in Pages '13?

It's really stupid program. In my uni, we use our own reference style, and I'm using endnote X7. I have used whole time today to change endnote format in pages'13. But, I could note change. the bibliography formats are fix to some popular referencing style. it's really rubbish program to uni studnets. I have wasted 1 day. do you have any ideas?

yep I tried everything what I can do.
I have iwork '09. so, I uninstall iWork'13 and reinstalled iWork '09. but, iWork '09 is not working on Maverick.
So, I have checked any update for iWork '09, but Apple does not support uptating for iWork'09. only ungrading to iWork'13 is possible.
Endnote and pages both companies, they don't have any soultion for this problem.
(even though I installed 2.0 endnotepages plug in, still I cannot change bibliography format).
So, I'm gonna back to Ms-word. Pages'13 is not ready for uni students.
Pages is just another notepad app for IOS. it's not for Mac user.

  • I use pages. What programmes can you use to create bibliographies? Is there anything like endnote available?

Is there anything I've endnote for pages?

    Hi Ma,
The problem I have with the endnote built in to pages is that I cannot cut and paste citations into it
I read this on Page 56 of the Pages'09 User Guide, and tried it. I could paste into the endnote. What is it that you can't do?
Adding an Endnote at the End of a Document
In a word processing document, you can add special marks in a document that link to notes at the end of the document. These notes are called document endnotes.
    To add a document endnote:
Click Inspector in the toolbar, click the Document button, and then click Document.
Choose Use Document Endnotes from the Footnotes & Endnotes pop-up menu.
Choose a numbering format from the Format pop-up menu.
Choose whether endnotes are continuous or restart on each page or section from the Numbering pop-up menu.
Place the insertion point in the main text flow (not in a text box, table, or other object) where you want the endnote mark to appear.
    Choose Insert > Endnote.
An endnote mark appears, and the insertion point moves to the corresponding endnote field at the end of the document following a section break. If you don’t want the endnotes on a new page, delete the section break.
    Type the endnote information.
    My example:
I was able to type or paste the endnote information. Please reply and say what is not working for you.
You can download the User Guide from the Help Menu in Pages.
    Regards,
    Ian.
