  • New iMac shuts down but does not start as set in Energy Saver Schedule

Set Energy Saver schedule to shut down at 2300 and it does so at approx 2305. Set schedule to start up at 0700 and it does so the next day but NOT after that (have repeated the exercise 3 times - same result!).

You should not be having "Energy Saver" problems on a new iMac.
Have you tried any of the following?Restarting your computer?
    Doing a PRAM zap?
Since you are still under warranty, strongly suggest that you take full advantage of it by calling Apple tech support.  Especially if you are within 90 days of your warranty and/or have AppleCare.

  • Energy Saver Schedule is backwards

    Hello everyone,
Does anyone have an issue with their schedule being backwards? I have my computer set to start up or wake everyday at 6:00 am and to shut down every day at 11:59 pm. I used to go to sleep knowing my computer was turning off and get up in the morning to have my computer - ready to use... but now for some reason, when I go use it in the morning, I notice the shutdown window is up stating that the computer is about to shut down unless I cancel. That should've happened at 11:59 pm. So, it seems that the computer is backwards somehow.
Is this a known bug with BootCamp and the fact that the Windows partition changes the clock? Once I reboot into OS X, the time auto corrects because I have it set automatically, so I'm not sure if thats correct or not?
    Thanks in advance!

    Test failed.
See my  iTunes Alarm 213 in Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger > Discussions for details of many failed solutions.
Somehow Energy Saver/Schedule failure is linked to recent failure of iTunes Alarm 213. It awoke my computer and played a radio station for several months but recently starting asking for admin password which it then rejected as incorrect (even tho password was OK elsewhere). Password change failed to solve problem. Would using AppleJack and CleanMyMac help? Using an OS on a maintenance CD to use Disk Utility/Repair Disk?

  • Energy Saver Ignoring Start Up

I have been trying to get my computer to start up based on the Energy Saver settings, but it seems to be ignoring them. The computer has no problem shutting down from the energy saver, but won't ever start up on its own.

Using the energy saver to turn on, is your MBP turned off or in sleep mode?
Is the schedule set to +"start up"+ or "wake" mode?

  • Energy Saver Schedule

Does anyone know of a way to have multiple "Wake Ups" scheduled in the energy saver panel of system preferences of OS 10.3.9? I have my iMac set to sleep when it hasn't been used in a while (30 min) but then I have it scheduled to Wake Up late at night one minute before Super Duper does a back up for me. When the back up is complete, I have it shut down. I would like to have it Wake Up again in the morning without my having to press the power button and wait for it to come up, but the Schedule screen of Energy Saver only allows me one Sleep and one Wake Up. Maybe there is a third party shareware/freeware that will accomplish this. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

  • Energy saver not starting the MM at times, holds the log a clue?

I have a MM as a server, normal OS, that sometimes does not start in the morning.  It is set to shut down at 23.00 and does so all evenings at 23.10.  However this morning (01-10-2011) it did not come on again and I was looking through the log and found some strange stuff.
    like:
    29/09/2011 12:38:06 /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/Metadata.framework /Versions/A/Support/mdworker[848] FolderManager: Failed looking up user domain root; url='file://localhost/dev/null/' path=/dev/null/ err=-36 uid=505 euid
    and
29/09/2011 12:38:11    /Applications/Utilities/QuickTime Player 7.app/Contents/MacOS/QuickTime Player 7[262]    DTUninstall(), the current deferred task 0x267454 being removed is also currently executing its dtAddr routine, so unexpected things may result  ( Radar #4555679 ).
    and
    29/09/2011 23:30:02    mds[66]    (Error) Task: QueryClose failed (-1) for store <MDSStoreToken: 0x411050>{storeID:0x6b000010 registered:YES private:NO age:14h18m40s uuid:5D7AEDC7-4772-4AB5-A1D9-5C5AF631FBFF machPort:0x00004007}
Now if it hangs for some reason I have a cron script that kills all at 23.30.  However I installed this via Cronnix and just checked and it is no longer there in Cronnix.  however the machine turns of at 23.30, so this puzzled me too. Is there a way to see in cron if there is a script there?  And remove it?
Two questions, is there anything in the log (I am not an expert here) that should not be or could cause this.
second one, if i do a cron killall, would this effect the energy control panel and for the machine not to start the next morning?
    Looking forward to your wisdom.

  • Energy Saver schedules- quick question

I probably know the answer, but when you schedule your powerbook, that has multiple user accounts, to wake up at a certain time, is it possible to set the computer to wake up in a specifc users account, or is the login screen the end of the road on that one?

    Ribbs,
If you have "Auto Login" set for a particular user, the machine should start and automatically log in as that user.

  • Energy saver schedule not working, can't set the time!

Hi, I was trying to schedule a shutdown today, only to find that it doesn't work, I can't select the time or input it, it only shows AM and PM, but no time! I can't input numbers in that box! I can delete AM or PM, but that's about it!
Does anyone have a clue on what's going on?
Here is a screen pic of the problem: http://img709.imageshack.us/i/screenshot20110127at403.png/

    Hmm. Very strange.
Does the date & time appear normally in your menubar, and on Finder windows, etc.?
It doesn't sound like a file system or permissions problem, but you might try Verifying your internal HD, per #6 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Then +*Repair Disk Permissions+* on it, per #5 there.

  • Energy saver keeps coming unlocked... sleep won't work

I've noticed when I arrive in the morning that my Mac Pro is awake.  But the Time Machine log shows it had been an entire hour since TM was active.
I researched various places (including here) and deleted the preference for com.apple.PowerManagement.plist.
But the problem persists.  What's more mysterious is that even though I lock the energy saver padlock, when I go back the next morning it is unlocked.
Any idea what's going on here?

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter ▹ Wake for network access: uncheck. You may need to unlock the preference pane by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your administrator password.
    Step 2
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Schedule… ▹ Start up or wake: uncheck
    Step 3
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue...
Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
    Step 4
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse or trackball, and monitor, if applicable.
    Step 5
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Enter “powerd” (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Select the powerd process and click the Quit Process button in the toobar (stop-sign icon.) In the sheet that opens, click Force Quit. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. The process will be relaunched immediately.
    Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the Mac OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

  • Energy Saver Shut Down Schedule Problem

I have Tiger set to Shut Down at 4:00 AM but when I wake up in the morning, the computer is still on, only it's not logged in. It is at the login screen (I have automatic login turned off). Now, I'm not sure if it's restarting the computer or simply logging out so in order to test it, I change the Shut Down time to about a minute in the future but the computer doesn't do anything! Does anyone have an idea?

Your uptime results show that the computer is not switching off.
    For example,
    9:56 up 9:44, 2 users, load averages: 0.23 0.24 0.23
... means it's now 9:56am and the computer has been up for 9 hours and 44 minutes.
Don't worry about the "2 users" - every individual terminal window is an additional login (unless you have actually changed the default setting). Forget about the load average too - this is just referring to how busy the CPU has been.
Another check you can run is to run this command in the terminal:
    last | less
The 'last' command shows all the logins, shutdowns and reboots performed on your computer. Piping that command through 'less' just allows you to page through the results. Do you see a regular "shutdown" at 04:00?
You can start off with the obvious mistakes and check that in the Energy Saver schedule you haven't got a contradictory "Start up or wake" time set.
You also need to bear in mind that when altering the schedule, you need to reboot the Mac once for the settings to take effect, so don't expect to change the setting to 1 minute in advance and see the computer shut down at that time.
The most likely problem is that your computer has already gone to sleep before 04:00 and therefore cannot shut down (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1614.html). In Energy Saver, check that the slider labelled "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for" is all the way to the right to indicate "never".
Another common problem is that you have some software running that is preventing your computer from shutting down. Do you see any warning windows on your desktop when you come back to your computer in the morning? If any software is in the middle of an operation when the automatic shutdown commences, you should see a warning pop-up. Unless you intervene at this point, the computer will not shut down. I have occasionally come back to my Mac in the morning to find a warning window asking whether I want to save and quit or similar.
Finally, another possibility is a hidden background process that is preventing the system from shutting down. If this is the case, then it gets a bit more tricky. You need to view the system log in the terminal:
    less /var/log/system.log
and look at what happens around 04:00 every day. Are there any errors that complain about shutdown?
That's all I can think of right now - my bet is that your computer is going to sleep before 4am, which prevents the automatic shutdown.

  • Imac turns itself on everyday at 7pm with no scheduled start up

In the energy saver schedule there is no startup time.

Can't get MAC to shut down and start up via the schedule button in system preferences energy saver. Is there another way?

    Try this to start:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Help Needed Setting Up Schedule in Energy Saver.

I know about Energy Saver and Scheduling to setup when you start up and shut down your computer, but I would like to know if there is a way to schedule different start up and shut down times on the weekends and start up and shut down times for the weekdays. Thanks.

There are retail apps that expand the idea of the Energy Saver. They may not yet be ready for Leopard.

  • HELP!!! Energy Saver ...Automatically start at ...Shutdown at ...corrupted

A while ago in the Energy Saver settings I ticked the box to start my iMac every day at 7 and to shut down at 23. Although I unticked the boxes, it still starts at 7, so I think the preference file is corrupted. I also tried to change times, but without success. Which one is it. Are there other/better solutions ?
