Energy Saver - Put Monitor to Sleep

I don't know if this has always been the case, but I noticed my iMac 20" display doesn't go to sleep.. I have it set for 25min ( Screen Saver at 15 ) ..
I've fooled with it a few times.. nothing..
Could a program I have running be over-riding it ? ( I know most video players over ride screen saver and the like, but I close them.. )
Could it be, most of the time I use the mouse to activate the Screen Saver as a hotspot ?
Could it be my Second Display ? ( Acer 32" LCD TV.. )
Help would be nice..

I'm having the same problem. I think it has started that since I put 10.4.10 on but I'm not positive.

  • Screen saver puts monitor to sleep after 5 minutes regardless of settings

Within System Preferences, I have set the Energy Saver to put my display to sleep after 15 minutes of disuse—yet it goes to sleep after 5. I have tried changing the display settings to 30 minutes, 1 hour, Never, etc., and nothing works; it always goes to sleep after 5, even when I have unchecked the selection for putting the hard disc(s) to sleep when possible. Does anyone know what would be causing this or another setting I am somehow overlooking?

  • Energy Saver: Put HDs to Sleep When possible?

Apple implies that this preference, turned on, will save energy. But what about wear and stress on the internal and external HDs as they spin up and down?
I have this pref. set to "on" (the default), but every time that I use the computer and the HDs are not spinning, and I then do something that requires an HD to spin up, all of them spin up, one after the other, before the operation can start. This takes time while all I want to do, for example, is open a document etc. that is not on an external HD. So, setting the pref. to "off" would stop this irritating and recurring delay (the HDs would of course spin down when the computer was put to sleep).
My question is, therefore, would setting this to "off" wear out the HDs significantly?

FWIW, I never sleep desktop computers or their associated HDs, only their displays. Mine run 24/7 and are only restarted when required to switch OSs or install updates. They're only shutdown when going on vacations. Most electromechanical devices failures occur druing power up.

  • Screen saver + Energy Saver (Computer Sleep + Display Sleep) won't work since Mavericks

    Howdy,
    Sorry to bother you.
My computer: iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.3)
It took me some time to upgrade to Mavericks, but I did it eventually.
After having some problems with Spotlight (which was infinite looping indexing... and I just had to turn if off from Terminal), I realized I was encountering another big problem to me since the installation of Mavericks.
    In System Preferences:
    - 'Desktop and Screen Saver > Screen Saver' : it is set to 1 minute;
    - 'Energy Saver > Computer Sleep' : it is set to 10 minutes;
    - 'Energy Saver > Display Sleep' : it is set to 5 minutes;
    - 'Energy Saver > Put hard disks to sleep when possible' : it is checked.
    - 'Energy Saver > Wake for network access' : it was checked. I unchecked it. Nothing changes.
    - 'Energy Saver > Start up automatically after a power failure' : it is unchecked.
    - 'Energy Saver > Allow power button to put computer to sleep' : this option is absent from my System Preferences > Energy Saver, but I would like it.
So, before Mavericks, everything was working great.
Now, after 1 minute, or after 5 minutes, or after 10 minutes: it's all the same. Nothing is sleepy. Nothing is energy saving.
I did not change anything in my computer since I've updated to Mavericks. However, I changed Wi-Fi. Since it was the only new change, I've "played" with 'Energy Saver > Wake for network access'. When I opened my System Preferences, it was checked. I unchecked it. It did not change anything. I'm not sure what it's used for.
I would appreciate any advice to make it work as it used to.
Thanks for your time reading and typing your answer,
    Have a good day,
    Regards,

    - 'Energy Saver > Allow power button to put computer to sleep' : this option is absent from my System Preferences > Energy Saver, but I would like it.
    Built into the Software now.
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
You might try Spotlight again. That is how the App Store knows what is installed.

  • Sleep, Energy Saver Troubleshooting

As one can see below, I have an Acard 6280M and I believe it's generally conceded that they cause sleep and Energy Saver issues. My issue:
    1. Will NOT shutdown automatically at night as scheduled; so, I shutdown manually or it might be asleep all night after I manually sleep it.
    2. WILL awaken from sleep or from shutdown in the mornings, as scheduled.
(I've made Macaroni inactive; din solve anything.)
    3. Will NOT sleep automatically (set for 'after idle for 25mins'). Monitor will sleep and monitor will awaken with the press of any key on the keyboard. HDD does not sleep.
Actually, #3 is my main concern; I've lived with 1. and 2. for a while, but 3. is a fairly recent, persistent phenomenon.
Given that Login items can cause sleep issues, I ran in Safe mode and that did not solve the problems.
I'm quite ignorant about Activity Monitor. Here's the top few lines from running Top; very similar to what I see in Activity Monitor; with no apps running/active far as I know:

Periodically, about every 50-60 seconds, two items pop up for only a second or two:
'sh' and 'python' (monitoring this stuff is like watching grass grow). Also, at CPU Usage, User will jump to 43% and System to 50%, just for a second or two. Notice at the top, "2 running". Yesterday, it also showed "1 stuck". I ran TTPro 'advanced' and today there's no 'stuck' process. In Activity Monitor, I also quit 'WindowServer' which was persistently showing up. However, the failure to auto-sleep persists. I've had this deal before and a restart usually solved it. I also started from my other drive and downloaded the latest Acard driver. All to no avail. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

    Hans,
Okay, in Energy Saver, "...HD sleep is deactivated as I have PCI cards installed..." That isn't right, Hans. DId you install a driver before card installation? One should never lose the ability to at least manually sleep, even with PCI cards. You might want to start a thread of your own.
I've read through about 10 pages of "sleep" threads here in Discussions (and there must be about 50 pages of em!). Sleep issues are very wide spread, particularly with laptops. I even read one where the user got a new iMac from Apple. Where do I sign up for that?! Again, kinda hoping someone could shed some light on the Activity Monitor and Top activities. MIght not be the problem at all, but they seem odd.

  • Shuffle Pictures Screen Saver / Energy Saver not working after 3.1.1 update

(cross-posted from the Snow Leopard discussions)
    Hello,
I've noticed that my Screen Saver has not been kicking in lately and thus my iMac hasn't progressed to the full Energy Saver profile settings (Computer Sleep in 1.5 hrs & Display Sleep in 30 mins). Screen Saver is set to shuffle random pictures from a folder in my Aperture library.
I'm not sure if it is linked or not, but I only noticed this problem after installing the latest update to Aperture (3.1.1) from the Software Update. Since they may be linked I am cross-posting this question in the Aperture discussions as well.
Any suggestions on what may be causing my problem and how to fix it?
    Thanks!

try Resetting it up, I run in that problem with adding images, I end up having to click of the the folder than click on the folder I want than it updates...

  • Energy Saver doesn't put Powerbook into sleep mode

I've noticed many issues with Sleep mode on the PB line, but wondered if anyone else was having this problem:
PB will go to Sleep if it's told to (shut lid, Apple Menu -> Sleep, Logitech Keyboard Sleep/Shutdown button, etc), but it will not put itself to sleep if left idle for ANY amount of time. Does not seem to matter whether or not it's plugged in.
I should not that the screen goes blank, but the hard drive never seems to spin down, little white light on lid release never comes on, etc. So it could be Sleep VS Deep Sleep, don't know really.
Note, this is not unique to my machine; others in the office where I manage systems/network have this problem, and we run a variety of G4 powerbooks 15 " models.
Not really sure when it stopped sleeping (have been on the ball with 10.4.x updates) but has been the case for some time now.
Also, have reset the PMU, and has not made any difference. Any one else having similar issues? Seems to me like Power Management of the G4 may have broken along the way.
    Cheers,

    Joe,
No Classic running; haven't had Classic on my system for at least 6 years. You could say that I'm a bit of an OS X biggot, to be honest. No looking back, and all that.
Used Top/Activity Monitor, and nothing running save the daemons/procs that usually appear - certainly nothing that jumps out at me as a problem. Even disabled all virus checking just to make sure it hadn't developed an incompatability with something in one of the last updates - no effect. Seriously, this is a case of 'it worked yesterday, and now (post updates) it doesn't.' Not that it's evident what the culprit is; nothing on the 10.4.8 updates seems a likely candidate, nor does anything on the 10.4.7. And not that I could even pin point when it happened either - simply became evident over time that hard drive wasn't spinning down, Sleep light wasn't coming on, etc.
I'm tempted to fish out my ol' TI Book 400, and give it a go and see if it has problems. Would at least eliminate any hardware dependencies that might be an issue. Don't know that I can be bothered though - in the grand scheme of things, it's just a minor thing and digging much deeper would require effort that would get in the way of real work.
In any case, all suggestions are welcome and help is appreciated.

  • Energy saver does not put computer to sleep

i have a new 15 inch macbook pro running 10.6.4. When the energy saver (i have checked all the proper buttons putting computer to sleep after 5 minutes of non use) puts the computer to "sleep" it actually does not sleep...it appears to sleep but the sleep light says illuminated (instead of pulsing) and then eventually the computer battery is drained and the computer needs a hard restart. All other sleep methods properly put it to sleep from choosing from the apple menu to shutting the lid...I assume there might be some program that is running in the background but when i look at console activity i see nothing noted...any thoughts as to how to solve this problem? thanks

You might try a SMC reset:

  • IBook g4 only sleeps on battery power. Other than putting never sleep in the energy saver what else can be done?

iBook g4 only sleeps on battery power. Other than putting never sleep in the energy saver what else can be done?

Do you mean it will only go to sleep when running from the battery? Or do you mean it won't do anything except sleep when running from the battery?
You could try resetting the PMU. The PMU has control over the Sleep function, so resetting it may help.

  • Energy Saver - timer on putting the computer to sleep doesn't work anymore

After a major crash on my iMac G5 (iSight), my iMac has stopped to go into sleep mode automatically after a set time. Think it is was a crash after using aperture and connected to a Sony K700i phone. Tried disconnect all the USB device and deleted some configuration files uder "Library\Prefrence\", but still no sign of getting my iMac back to normal, does anyone has any ideas or suggestion to diagnosis the problem or to fix it. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Pattop,
Other than gpco gsx excellent suggestion, you can try to reset your SMU...
Also, go into system preferences and make sure your settings are being memorized, sometimes you might find they somehow changed for some unknown reason. I suggest you disable screensaver by setting to 'NEVER', and disable 'Automatically Reduce Brightness...' in Energy Saver > Options... see if it helps.

  • Energy saver not putting my iMac into sleep mode

I've tried ejecting my firewire drives and other usb devices but cannot get the iMac to actually turn off per its energy saver settings. Screensaver and then screen shut off both activate per the energy saver settings, but the computer stays on. Only way that sleep mode is ever activated is if I'm in the login screen, or if I manually press the button on the back of the computer.
Would really appreciate it if anyone has a workaround to actually make my iMac sleep automatically. Never had this problem with my PC..

This might work for you and save a lot of head scratching. Sometimes these sleep problems just can't be figured out. I've used it successfully. Free

  • Energy saver will not put Mac to sleep

I have a new Intel Mac mini. I am running off an external drive (MiniStack2). The drive was formatted and then had data transferred from old G4. The internal drive, when used as a start-up disk, functions fine. The external drive will not enter sleep mode (screen turns off, but not HD). The G4 had similar problem. Not sure why one drive as start-up drive and other does not. I have quit all active processes and tried every set of options - the machine will not put HD to sleep.
Is there a plist or other file I must reload? I am certain this is a software issue. Problem in 10.4.7 and 10.4.8 (and 10.4.x on G4)

  • Mac Mini won't sleep automatically using energy saver

I can't make my mini sleep using energy saver. The monitor will go to sleep the mac continues to stay on. I can manually put the mac to sleep by pushing the power button or by selecting sleep in the menu options. This occurs even if nobody is logged in.
I've tried unplugging all USB, Firewire, and Ethernet devices. That made no difference. I assume it has to be an application that's running continuously in the background, but I don't know how to narrow it down to the right one.
    Suggestions?

You can try using Utilities > Activity Monitor to see what processes are most active, also look at Disk Activity.

  • Putting the monitor to sleep

I have a large project that i want to run over night and io would like to turn the monitor off or make it sleep. The power button on the the side of the monitor(20") when pressed says "do you want to put the computer to sleep, restart, shut down"...is it refering to the computer or the monitor ?
In the prefs the monitor power button is set to sleep mode yet these options come up and then they refer to the computer ...confused ?
    Thanks
    Matt

"puts the system to sleep or wakes it" refers to both your monitor and G5.
to only turn your monitor on or off select option "turns the display on or off" does not affect G5.
no option to sleep monitor by itself with the power button on the display..
you can always use the sleep options in the Energy Saver window of system preferences then only your monitor will sleep and not your G5.
    hope this helps.

  • Hard drives sleep - not energy saver settings

I have two(2) different Quad 2.7 Pro Mac computers, both with 2 500GB Seagate drives mirror raided internally and Sonnet Fusion D500 SATA enclosures with 5 500GB seagates RAID striped.
They all fall asleep after inactivity, and it take several seconds for the drives to spin back up. The energy saver is set to never. I even tried turing it on, restarting, turing it off, reseting, but it did not help.
I've removed the internal RAID and the external still sleeps, and vice versa.
My only thought is it it the seagate drives. They are refurbished baracuda 7200.9 drives.
    Any ideas?

    hello,
i'm experiencing the same issue. i have 4 internal raptors in RAID0 and 4 external WD drives in a PM enclosure and have found that they too sleep as you mentioned.
i checked the energy saver and the box is unchecked to "put drives to sleep when possible" also...
i installed Leopard the other day when i got the new enclosure and external equipment - clean install - so i don't know if it would do the same in Tiger...
any suggestions, or is this normal for exterior storage - regardless if it is SATA or not?
