Energy saver settings do not stick when set in system preferences

For some reason when I restore the default settings for the energy saver settings, the settings go back to a custom setting I set months prior of Display Sleep at 1 minute.
Here is what I am doing:
Going to "System Preferences"
Going to "Energy Saver"
Pressing the button "Restore Defaults"
Everything goes back to the default settings of Computer Sleep of 10 minutes and Display Sleep of 10 minutes and I close the window out.
Problem happens: A bit later I come back to my iMac and wake it up, the setting is back to 1 minute of Display Sleep (which I did months ago, I no longer want that).
I have even locked the setting to prevent further changes. Which locks the settings in place like it should I believe. However, once the iMac sleeps and I wake it up in a couple of hours it switches back to the old setting I made months ago, 1 minute of Display Sleep, which I no longer want.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

i have the opposite problem... i would like to use custom Energy Saver settings but they will not "stick." instead they keep returning to the default settings. i followed the advice on this thread, thinking it might solve my problem too. but it did not. any suggestions?
i had one hunch - that it might have something to do with the file of same name but with ~orig at the end (see image below). should i remove the other file as well?
thanks!

  • Energy saver settings won't stick

I've set my iBook to NOT dim the screen prior to going to sleep. I've also disabled the screen saver and have set the display to sleep after 1 hour. Still, the screen dims (not much, but noticeably) after just a couple of minuts of inactivity. It seems that the energy saver settings have no effect. Does anyone else see this behavior?
    Joe

Keep in mind that the "Energy Saver" lock is the same lock as all the other system Preferences locks. If one is unlocked they all are.
My Macbook never has gone to Sleep on it's own, ore rarely if at all. I have attributed it to a 56 dialup accelerator that I use as that program also causes it to take about 31 seconds to go to sleep any time you manually select Sleep from the menu. I just point this out because maybe you have some application that is causing a problem with Sleep.

  • F-keys not working as set in System Preferences

In System Preferences, under MIssion Control, "Show Desktop" is set to the F6 key. But my new macbook pro keyboard has the the F6 key set to turn on the backlight keyboard, and so with other F-keys. How do I "show desktop" with the keyboard, and why doesn't the F6 key work as set in System Preferences? Am I doing it wrong? Thanks.

    Good day Arandel,
On a portable Mac such as your MacBook Pro to use the assigned functions from the Mission Control System Preferences, you must simultaneously press the function (fn) key in the bottom left corner of your keyboard, in your case fn + F6. See this article for reference -

  • Energy Saver settings don't "stick"

It seems like at random times the settings I have set in Energy Saver, which I lock, become "unlocked." For example, I have Energy Saver set to put the display to sleep after 8 minutes of inactivity and for the hard drive to go to sleep after 10 minutes. The lock in the lower left corner of System Preferences is locked...for sure.
It'll work fine; then one day I'll lift the lid on the MacBook; use it for awhile; will set it down, thinking it'll go to sleep if I'm not back in 10 minutes; I'll come back an hour later, only to find that while the MacBook's screen is off, the HDD did NOT go to sleep as it's set to. I'll open System Preferences, and find that somehow the lock in Energy Saver is now UNlocked.
How does this happen? Am I missing something here? What causes the Energy Saver lock to become "unlocked?" I've been burned by having a drained battery several times, and I can't figure out what I'm missing to ensure this doesn't happen as REPEATEDLY as it is?

Keep in mind that the "Energy Saver" lock is the same lock as all the other system Preferences locks. If one is unlocked they all are.

  • Color Settings\Colorsync settings don't stick when setting printing presets

    Hello
Posting this here, instead of in the iPhoto Forum
In the "Print" dialog box (the dialog box you see after you pass through the iPhoto dialog box - same type of box as with most other OS X applications), there is a down menu to give you access to several categories of settings related to the print job.
Here of course you can save printing presets (paper type, print quality, color management, etc).
Why do ColorSync settings under the "Color Matching" dropdown not get saved with the other presets? Every time, the profile setting defaults to "Automatic". Is this a bug or is there something I am not doing correctly? Is there a good reason why they aren't saved along with other settings? Apple on-screen Help says "some settings cannot be saved in a profile, but this would seem to be a very handy thing?
I use an Epson Artisan 800.
Alternatively, can someone tell me what the behavior is of the "Automatic" setting?
I recently profiled the printer and I am just looking for an easy/quick way at the time of printing to apply one of the three profiles based on the type of paper that is being used. I just figured this would be the easiest way to do it? (my question applies to any application - I posted here because this is of particular importance with iPhoto)
BTW Is it me or is there surprisingly little information online about ColorSync workflows/behavior/relationships in OS X?
Many thanks for any and all advice.
    Justin

    Hi Scott,
Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
First of all please update the RDC version to RDP 8.1 for better functionality. Then try to install below updates for windows 7 and check the result.

I upgraded to snow leopard, since then safari does open in the dock (white dot) but does not startup as set in system preferences. Also, if I open safari, the title page remains blank even though I have set a home page under safari's preferences. I re-initialised safari, but no change.

Having put my home-page under "new windows open with home-page" solves the "blank title page problem".
One problem left: "safari" does not startup automatically as set in system preferences, whereas "mail", also set for startup DOES startup

  • Energy Saver settings not controlling shutdown

I've reset the SMU and PRAM and my problem continues to return. The computer shuts down in about 30 minutes regardless of what settings I put into Energy Saver. The only way I can prevent it is to open an image in Photoshop and then open an edit screen in a NIK plug-in. It still tries to shutdown but this stops it. I've noticed if Lightroom is running as well that it gets shutdown (even if playing a slideshow) and then the computer tries to quit but Photoshop stops it.
This has been going on for several months. I posted previously here and only response was to reset the above, which I do periodically. Any other suggestions? Is this a software or hardware problem?
I just want control back of my Energy Saver settings. It's almost impossible to download anything that is of any size - say an Apple 150Mb update.

    Hi Mel
Set Computer sleep to Never, Display Sleep to say 10 minutes and uncheck the box "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible"
Then click the Schedule... button and make sure that the boxes for Startup, Wake, Sleep, Restart, Shutdown are unchecked and click OK.

Doesn't sound like it.  It sounds like you're being logged-off.
Does your Mac go through the complete Restart cycle -- black screen, gray and/or blue screen momentarily, startup chime, etc?
If you're not sure, do a Restart just to watch the process; the next time the problem occurs, see if it's the same.
You need to know which it is, as these will have very different causes, and different places to look for a solution.

    Hi ..
    Might be corrupted preferences.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.screensaver.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac then reset your screen saver.

  • Machine goes to sleep faster than Energy Saver settings

    Hi all,
(I've searched for existing threads aboutthis but couldn't find any. Hope I'm not "re" posting)
I use my laptop (MBP 2.4, 8gb, INtel Core i7) to play music live, so I need it to not go to sleep for at least... 30-40 minutes as I will frequently not touch it directly for that long as I'm busy playing my instruments. But it goes to sleep consistently after about 10 minutes even though I've got the display set to sleep abfter 1.5 hours and the computer to sleep after 2 hrs.
Then I noticed the same thing on my Mac Pro in my studio. Same Energy Saver settings, still goes to sleep after about 10-15 minutes. Which means I have to re-enter my password there too. Same thing on my older MBP. Theyr'e all on Lion 10.7.4.
This is very annoying. Anyone know what I'm doign wrong?
    Huge thanks!

I'm not sure why Energy Saver is doing that, but you may want to download Caffeine from the Mac App Store. It's a menu bar application that you can click and unclick that, when clicked, keeps your Mac on until it is unclicked or if you close the laptop lid/manually put it to sleep.

  • Strange behaviour of the Energy Saver settings

I noticed that the two sliders in the Energy Saver settings seem to work in tandem. If I set the Display to "Never shutdown" (I used this as I don't want my display/TV to go off in the middle of a movie as the mac sees there are no user interactions), and then try to adjust the sleep timer to anything (15min, 30min, etc.), it aligns the slider for the Display at the same point!
Is it happening only on my mac or is it the way it works for others?

That would be the simple logic. But, the scenario I mentioned is also a logical one. I have noticed that when I am watching a long Youtube video or an online movie from sites like Jaman, the screen would go off even though the system access is alive. At that time I have to scramble to the mouse/kbd to reactivate the display.
At the same time, I want to put the mini to sleep after 30min of inactivity. Hence, I want to set the sleep timer to 30min and the display to "never".
The energy saver settings show two separate sliders and there is no indication that they are attached at the hips.
Since it works this way for you as well, then I am not doing something weird. I think this is a bug in the OS.

  • Photoshop and CS6 Epson Page Settings do not stick

I am using Photoshop Extended CS6 on a Mac with OS 10.7.4 and the latest driver for an Epson 7800 just downloaded from the Epson site. In the Print Settings dialogue "Page Setup" defaults to "Roll Paper - Banner" and any other selection such as sheet does not stick when saving a printing preset. Once selected, it appears to stay for one print, but returns to roll paper so that it needs to be reset with every print.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so, have you found a solution?
    Thanks,
    Ed

    Ed,
I noticed the same thing with the margins, however, as I use mostly large sheet sizes (I had the paper curl of rolls) that does not affect the lack of a sticky setting for "sheet" when I save a preset.
I had three conversations this week with Epson Technical Support. The last one being today with Ron who took control of my desktop and found out for himself exactly what I was saying. He then spoke to others in his department and came back with the response, "apparently this is an issue we are aware of and it will be fixed." "When," I asked. He didn't know and said to just keep checking for an update their drivers page.
Personally, I will not hold my breath. I would suspect that in the grand scheme of things, this bug is of very low priority.

  • Drive sleep too quickly - all drives, regardless of energy saver settings

i have a g5 quad which from day one has had "narcolepsy issues". all drives (boot and secondary internal sata, fw400, fw800, usb2, and esata) have a tendency to spin down very soon, resulting in SBBODs. sometime for the standard few seconds but often indefinitely resulting in "not responding" status in both the finder and drive dependent apps like final cut pro.
energy saver settings all set to never - and spin down when possible is unchecked.
boot drives have been zero level formatted 4 times now, so im dead certain its not a drive issue...
i have heard of others having this issue but have yet had anyone propose any solutions.

I would first try a PMU reset and nvram reset. Instructions here:

  • Energy Saver Display Sleep not working after upgrade. Why???

I upgraded to Mavericks a few days ago and since then, the screen will not blank out after the set time on the Display Sleep bar.  This happens whether on battery or power.  I've run Verify/Repair Disk and Permissions, and still not go.  Any suggestions on what else I might do or check to get this going again?  Thanks!

What are your screensaver settings? What are your energy saver settings? Will the screen at least go dark or nothing at all? What programs are running? Some programs prevent any kind of sleep while running. I once had an issue on my old iBook when sleep and screensaver where set to 5 min or less and it prevented sleep at all.
There are 2 things that can help if the source is not 3rd party related: first reset PRAM, and if that didn't do anything, reset your SMC (system management controller), but read the linked Apple Instructions, it is recommended to be only used if everything else failed.

  • MAX settings do not stick

Hi - I'm trying to use FTDI drivers to simulate a COM port from an USB connection. Most WinXP SP2 or 3 machines have no problem, but I have one machine where having run MAX to ensure correct port operation, on quit and relaunch MAX shows a port conflict. This can be cleared with the available controls, but recurs the next time MAX is started. The settings do not stick. The subsystem (a TTi QL355TP power supply) does not see the communication either on this machine, and is OK on the others.
Environment: LV 8.2.1, MAX 4.1 or 4.2.1 . Would prefer not to upgrade LV to more recent version at this stage. LV 8.2.1 re-installed.
Any help or nudges much appreciated.

Thanks for reply. I can't obtain a screenshot at the moment, but the MAX display is a standard diagnostic I've seen on other occasions. Select a COM port in 'Configuration', and the "Port Settings' tab at the bottom has 'Conflict' added. The screen area above shows two columns of 'Settings', one from MS Windows, the other from MAX. These columns disagree in (for example) speed or flow control. Pressing 'Validate' aligns the two, 'conflict' disappears, 'Save' at top of screen appears to save correctly, and everything's fine. Except that the application this setting relies on still has a communication problem, and if you restart MAX the screen display resets to how I described above!
Re-install or repair of NI software does not fix it, nor does re-install of USB drivers. A corrupt data file on this machine would fit the observed evidence - are you able to point me to all the files that MAX may write? A corrupt MS Windows Registry entry might do it also, I guess. Do you know of any tools for checking or fixing such problems? The problem was triggered by a clumsy cleanup of installed NI software that was aborted partway through. The system is installed with a customer making a clean install of everything difficult and we are right at the point of having to write an unattractive workaround that uses a lower level serial interface to allow us to use NI Spy to eke out the required functionality.
    Any help appreciated.
