Energy saver will not put Mac to sleep

I have a new Intel Mac mini. I am running off an external drive (MiniStack2). The drive was formatted and then had data transferred from old G4. The internal drive, when used as a start-up disk, functions fine. The external drive will not enter sleep mode (screen turns off, but not HD). The G4 had similar problem. Not sure why one drive as start-up drive and other does not. I have quit all active processes and tried every set of options - the machine will not put HD to sleep.
Is there a plist or other file I must reload? I am certain this is a software issue. Problem in 10.4.7 and 10.4.8 (and 10.4.x on G4)

  • Energy saver does not put computer to sleep

i have a new 15 inch macbook pro running 10.6.4. When the energy saver (i have checked all the proper buttons putting computer to sleep after 5 minutes of non use) puts the computer to "sleep" it actually does not sleep...it appears to sleep but the sleep light says illuminated (instead of pulsing) and then eventually the computer battery is drained and the computer needs a hard restart. All other sleep methods properly put it to sleep from choosing from the apple menu to shutting the lid...I assume there might be some program that is running in the background but when i look at console activity i see nothing noted...any thoughts as to how to solve this problem? thanks

You might try a SMC reset:

  • Energy Saver doesn't put Powerbook into sleep mode

I've noticed many issues with Sleep mode on the PB line, but wondered if anyone else was having this problem:
PB will go to Sleep if it's told to (shut lid, Apple Menu -> Sleep, Logitech Keyboard Sleep/Shutdown button, etc), but it will not put itself to sleep if left idle for ANY amount of time. Does not seem to matter whether or not it's plugged in.
I should not that the screen goes blank, but the hard drive never seems to spin down, little white light on lid release never comes on, etc. So it could be Sleep VS Deep Sleep, don't know really.
Note, this is not unique to my machine; others in the office where I manage systems/network have this problem, and we run a variety of G4 powerbooks 15 " models.
Not really sure when it stopped sleeping (have been on the ball with 10.4.x updates) but has been the case for some time now.
Also, have reset the PMU, and has not made any difference. Any one else having similar issues? Seems to me like Power Management of the G4 may have broken along the way.
    Cheers,

    Joe,
No Classic running; haven't had Classic on my system for at least 6 years. You could say that I'm a bit of an OS X biggot, to be honest. No looking back, and all that.
Used Top/Activity Monitor, and nothing running save the daemons/procs that usually appear - certainly nothing that jumps out at me as a problem. Even disabled all virus checking just to make sure it hadn't developed an incompatability with something in one of the last updates - no effect. Seriously, this is a case of 'it worked yesterday, and now (post updates) it doesn't.' Not that it's evident what the culprit is; nothing on the 10.4.8 updates seems a likely candidate, nor does anything on the 10.4.7. And not that I could even pin point when it happened either - simply became evident over time that hard drive wasn't spinning down, Sleep light wasn't coming on, etc.
I'm tempted to fish out my ol' TI Book 400, and give it a go and see if it has problems. Would at least eliminate any hardware dependencies that might be an issue. Don't know that I can be bothered though - in the grand scheme of things, it's just a minor thing and digging much deeper would require effort that would get in the way of real work.
In any case, all suggestions are welcome and help is appreciated.

  • Energy Saver panel not working-Mac drive keeps powering up

I have a 17 inch "Lampshade" iMac running 10.2.8. I have set the preferences in the Energy Saver panel to put the computer to sleep after about 15 minutes and to put the hard drive to sleep when possible. But it never happens. I'm sitting in the room with the computer now and about every 5 minutes I can hear the hard drive spin up for about 30 seconds, then it stops. When the drive is not spinning, I can still hear the computer is on. What exactly is sleep mode, for both the computer and the drive, and should the hard drive periodically start up when it should be sleeping? If not, how do I get my machine to really sleep? Thanks for the help.

Hi! HERE is some info on sleep. Putting the hard drive to sleep is really something I avoid. It will last just as long by never letting it spin down and the computer will come back to life faster. i would let the display sleep but only after 30 minutes or so or even 15 if I consistently left for long periods. The life of a hard drive now days is usually given in start/stop cycles which is more hard on one than running it 24/7/365. I run all my stuff 24/7/365 except for the monitors which I let sleep after 30 minutes idle. Tom

  • Mac will not wake up from sleep

I'm running 10,7,5 on 2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon. The computer needs to restart because it will not wake after it sleeps. I've tried lots of different settings in the screen saver.
    Any suggestions?

.... and you fail to mention the model SSD and firmware version... or how you installed or cloned the system
most people also move most of their user folder to another hard drive.
sounds like a more normal Mail + OS issue if just that.
hard restarts = directory corruption so don't reboot w/o first either Recovery Mode, then follow up with Safe Boot.
And maybe you have 3rd party hardware or software that is not compatible with 10.8.2 needs to be considered as well.
2008 model 3,1 also are having a lot of issues this year. Including another critical piece, what gpu it has.

  • Is there an AppleScript or Automator Script that will wake a Mac from Sleep?

Is there an AppleScript or Automator Script that will wake a Mac from Sleep?

    Frank and All,
The following answer to your question above is complicated, but I hope it explains why my question was formed with so much frustration in it.
I have an OpenOffice(OO) Macro that was launched with Calendar at 6pm each business night. It ran properly in all Apples operating systems until I Hit Maverick(OSX10.9). From then on, the AppleScript would run from one to 3 days, then would disappear from the Calendar entry. The Calendar alert would still run, but the "OpenFile" section of the alert would disappear. I also was running elgato EyeTV HD during the day, so I would use energy saver to put my MacBook Pro to sleep at 12 Midnight and wake it again at 9am. I picked up a used Mac Mini to do the EyeTV stuff, provide AppleTV the files in H264 format through iTunes' media share, and found it had plenty of power to do the 6pm automated stuff simultaneously as well. Because I still wanted to run the OpenOffice Macro on my MacBook Pro at 6pm, and wanted to use it for a host of other things when I was on the road, I wanted it to sleep most of the time and only wake up automatically to run the 6pm OO Macro. When I called Apple about the issue I was having with Maverick and Calendar loosing the OpenFile command as part of the Alert Message, they told me the no longer supported answering AppleScript Questions but they now would support Automator questions. I pointed out that the OpenFile would also fail after one to three days if I used a Calendar Alert to launch an Automator App. At first, I did not like Automator, but now I see why Apple is pushing us to use it. Automator adds a TIME STAMP ID to the Apps developed in Automator so the first time you launch the App after a change to it, you must reply to a dialog message saying that this is the first time you are running this version of the App. If a Scammer has replaced your app with one that can reek havoc on your computer, the replacement app will not run unless you are there to agree that you know where the modified app came from and click the OK button to continue (BRILLIANT, Enhanced Security idea on Apples part). I also noticed that after Mountain Lion, the Applescript delay timing was all screwed up as well. Well I tried to use LaunchD Task Scheduler to circumvent the Calendar Problem and that worked until I upgraded to Yosemite Last week. Then LaunchD no longer worked and I am only into a few days of using The Calendar Launched Automator App to see if it will continue to run.
But I think I solved the dilemma I was having with opening an Automator App in a Sleeping Mac. I Googled up the following question, "AppleScript to wake up computer".  I went thru several complex responses until I found this on that is INCREDIBLE EASEY! What came back was a brettterpstra.com  response from Feb 20th,2014. What it said, in a Quick Tip: caffeinated your Terminal Article,  if you wanted to wake a Mac from sleep, use the Terminal command named "Caffeine -u -t 1". I placed it in an Automator Most Used Action called "Run Shell Script -- Caffeine -u -t 1" and it worked!  Now, I can put my Mac to Sleep but at 6pm, the Automator App will launch, run the "Caffeine -u- -t 1" command and proceed to work as if I had awakened the Mac From Sleep mode by pressing a keyboard key and had run the Automator Script with a double click.
Sorry for the long, drawn-out reply, but maybe this will help others.

  • Is it better to put Mac in sleep or just power off?

    Hi there,
I am a new user for Mac, (i just have one Macbook Pro) would very much to know the suggestion: either we should close the lip, put the mac in sleep mode or power off every day when finished the work?
which one is better for computer? someone says better not turning on and off every day, do so unless you will not use Mac for days. but I also found people says keep the computer in sleep mode might have trouble to wake it up later...
    any experts suggestion?
    thanks,

I would not regard myself as expert and you are going to get opinions for both approaches. I have just passed on a 3 year-old MacBook Pro that has never been off, apart from updating when restarts are required. Similarly, my iMac sleeps (protected by UPS) and is not turned off. I am happy this way.
I would take slight exception to your process, however. In my opinion, I put the MacBook Pro to sleep by using OptionCommandDelete (or the Apple menu) and wait until the power light pulses before closing the lid.

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. The purpose of this test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Maverick will not wake up from sleep

Maverick will not wake up from sleep. i dont see any related issues. maybe i am the only one? Ive been trying to run maverick for the last 2 months. I thought everything was fine after I erased, reformated and partitioned the HD and installed Maverick on a clean drive......  and then i get the ? startup disk. And then when it does run, I cant let it go to sleep. It will not wake up from sleep. I get the spinning beach ball of death everytime. I leave my computer on and run to the grocery store and come back........ I have to shut my computer off from the control strip and push the start button, every time.
Anyone know if this will damage my computer??
I have selected the HD in the preferences startup; I've unplugged it for several minutes; started up in S mode; zapped the P ram; ran permissions; you name it. im at a loss.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Should i buy another Mac? I cant afford one in this economy.

I suggest you use the Recovery Partition Disk Utility to check the hard disk and then re-install the OS from there.

  • Help me-adobe flash player install box "run" or "saveas" will not pop open when I install or update

I have windows vista 64. I already have flash player13 and reader x 10.1.9 but I can not get FLASH back.
It wasn't working on youtube. So I tried to update it. Went to adobe and clicked the yellow button to check to see if I had adobe flash. It said I didn't have it installed. I then went to control panel and checked programs and IT WAS installed. So I deleted it. Then went back to adobe page and tried to re-install the newest flash player.
Again. . . the dialogue box that normally pops up to choose;run or saveas Will not and Does not POP! I re-set my cpu 3 times during the process in order to get a clean go at it too.
Anyway thanks for your help and let me know please.
ps I figure this is something that may be fine in a week or two. But I still want to know wtf happened here and what did I do wrong.

  • HP LaserJet P3005x will not come out of sleep mode

Printer will not come out of sleep mode (after being in sleep mode for an extended period of time (over 24 hrs)).  When this happens, I can not ping the printer and pressing any of the buttons on the printer will not bring it out of sleep mode.  I'm testing now to see if I can recreate this with the printer attached to my PC via USB.

    Hi arosecarter,
I understand your monitor is not coming out of sleep mode. Take a look at the following support document, Resolving Problems with Sleep and Hibernate Modes (Windows 7). Step 3 might be of particular interest to you, as you mentioned your keyboard and mouse are not really working for you either. Perhaps it is another connected device that is causing the issue? Anyway, hopefully this document will be of help to you. Best of luck. Have a wonderful day.

  • 890FXA-GD70 Will Not Wake From S3 Sleep

890FXA-GD70 will not wake from S3 sleep; the power comes back on and the fans run but the video never returns and the system hard locks with a POST code of 22 or 24. Other than this issue the system is rock solid.
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Processor
    Sapphire 5870 Graphics
    Crucial M4 SSD
    Corsair DDR3
    No overclock
I have reproduced the issue on two 890FXA-GD70s motherboards and I am convinced that this is not a result of a failed motherboard. I also was able to move my fully installed SSD hard drive, processor, memory and graphics card to an Asus 890FX board and successfully wake from S3 sleep proving that my OS and driver installation are working correctly.
I know how to properly set the BIOS as I have installed many 890GXM-G65 motherboards for S3 sleep without issue. The problem seems unique to the 890FXA-GD70.
Is there a fix for this?

I have identified the cause. The "Extra RAID/IDE Controller" must be "Enabled" to use S3; otherwise the system will hang on the wake event. This is true even if the "Extra RAID/IDE Controller" goes unused. The "Extra RAID/IDE Controller" must be set to "Enabled" for S3 sleep to wake.
This would seem to me to be a bug since none of the other MSI boards I have used require the optional IDE controller to be enabled in order for S3 to function properly.

  • My iMac will not wake up from sleep after upgrading to OS X Mavericks

After upgrading to OS X, my iMac will not wake up from sleep.  Each time I have to do a hard restart.  Is there a fix for this problem?

    Hi,
I have just had the same problem with my iMac and after upgrading to Mavericks my iMac would not wake without pressing the power off button and re-booting.
Anyway, I have since done a complete new install on my iMac and have gone 5 days without an issue with the iMac not waking.  It was a bit of a pain to do but my own view so far is that the problem is linked to the upgrading of the OS instead of a clean install.
My iMac now flies with a new OS installed instead of an upgrade.

    Hi Dominic,
My problem is essentially as stated.
I down loaded a trial copy of Contribute 6.5 to my Mac which has 10.5.8
As this will not support Contribute 6.5 I transferred to download, to
    my laptop which has 10.6
It would not install. I wass advised to download Adobe Advisor, which
I did and it reported "no issues"
    How should I proceed?
