Engineer workstation

Hi, i installed arch to an engineer friend of mine, and he ask me for applications to use on linux that fit his needs.
1) He wants a Visio replacement. I heard that the *.vsd are kinda "private" and there isnt any replacement for thi software. I installed Kivio, but he says that is not as complete as visio.
2) A script that converts *.vsd files to *.xml files.
3) A good fortran IDE.
4) a cientific calculator that supports ecuations.
5) A good math formula editor.
6) And another maths application that you people consider good on linux.
Thanx!

my notebook model is hp pavilion dv6 1100ss ,, i know that my laptop has 512mb dedicated and 1278 shared total available memory of 1790,,  and i wonder if i can change the dedicated part because i had to take the laptop to a service for repairs, the video chipset broken ,they repaird it somehow but the laptop fails when i try to see a video online / movie online /offline ,and again fails if i try to play a game the laptop just freezes and i have to unplug the power leave it like 5 to 10 mins and then power it up again, if i try to power on the laptop after i turn it off he just simply turns on for 2-3 seconds and turns off

Only a very small number of very expensive high-end gaming and engineeering workstation laptops have plug in video cards. Yours is not one of them. The video soldered to your motherboard is a type of video chip also delivered as a desktop video card and maybe as a plug in card for those few laptops. Again, not for yours.

  • Permissions bug, according to ISP engineer.

I am having problems setting up VPN for Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit, home workstation computer, not networked.
I am also having general non-specific problems with Internet connectivity, according to network engineers.
I having a WiFi Mac and a hard-wired cable connect PC sharing the same modem at home.
The two machines are not 'networked', but standalone workstations. Relevant?
Specifically, I get script errors when I try to setup any 3rd party VPN service.
I can ignore error and VPN sets up.
But then the number of non-specific problems increase.
All of the 3rd party vendors, AND MY ISP ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT... blame Windows.
LOL! Maybe more specifically, there's something Windows and I should be doing, that we are not doing.
I noticed that my Ethernet Network has not selected Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Protocol.
What happens if I install this "Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Protocol"?
Is this why VPN is grumpy?
I found these two interesting links, but they don't point me in any specific direction.

Also, every time I click Diagnose (hiding behind Properties popup in above capture), I get errors after installing Windows. Microsoft Research did something here, and the errors are gone in this particular  Windows installation, but I still can't install
    VPN without errors.
Very simply, the batcmd files runs as follows:
    @echo off
    sc config NdisImPlatform start= demand
    exit
Anecdote   MNAMP is for Network Teaming and Binding. Provides a platform for network adapter load balancing and fall-over.
Query   MNAMP may resolve some permissions issue that causes VPN installers to display 'SCRIPT ERROR' during install. Considered that script error displays without Windows popup error and may be related to "waiting for Windows Firewall to
respond". At same time Windows Event viewer shows Error (reasoned with ISP engineer just now, possible Windows 8.1 Pro permissions bug, with implications far beyond VPN installer hangs)

    Hi,
I think Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Protocol is nothing to do with your issue. It was not installed by default. If it is not designated as “necessary” in vendor user Guide. I don’t think it will affect VPN connection.
Regarding to third party software/service problem, it is actually out of our support scope and our help might be limited.
We suggest you contact your program vendor to check if they have guidance for this.
The normal way to fix this would be to run services.msc, or to go into Administrative Tools and run "Services". You will not be able to do that if the "Application Information" service is disabled. Instead, reboot your computer into Safe
Mode with Networking. Then run services.msc and look for services that are designated as "Disabled" in the Startup Type column. Change these "Disabled" services to "Automatic". Make sure the "Application Information"
service is set to a Startup Type of "Automatic". When you are done enabling your services, click Ok at the bottom of the tool and reboot your computer back into normal mode.
If you are facing Access Denied Error when using SC command.
You may first try to enable the default administrator on your computer and later try to run the command in elevated command prompt and verify if you are able to run the command successfully.
To enable the default Administrator account, perform the steps below:
    1. Click Start and type CMD in the Start search box
    2. Right click on CMD in the list and click on "Run as administrator"
    3. Type the following command: net user administrator /active:yes
Restart the computer and you should see an "Administrator" account.
Access Administrator account and follow the steps 1 and 2 and try to run the command.
If you need to do that for certain purpose such as running VPN when startup computer. You could provide us more details so we might find some workaround for you.
    Thanks for your understanding.
    Regards
    D. Wu

  • Command to log agent out/in on workstation?

(11.2.x) -- Is there a command to get the Zenworks agent to log out, and also
one for logging in, at the Windows workstation? e.g. a command-line equivalent
to right-clicking the icon in the system tray area & choosing "Logout" or "Login".
I'm sure if there is, it's somewhere obvious in the documentation, but I
haven't been able to find it. So far the only way I can see to cause a logout
is to remove the registry entries that cache the current username.
    Thanks.

There is not any supported way to automate this.

I have a new Windows 2003/Citirx Metaframe server. I am unable to get the

  • Certificate update / workstation registration

    Hi there
I will be updating the certificates on the zenworks servers. These have been signed by the eDir external CA.
I will apply the certificate, then refresh all devices and thereafter enforce the certificates.
My question is, we have a number of images which we deploy to various labs/workstations.
The agent has already been installed on these workstations and then the agent was
cleaned up prior to uploading it to the server.
So the images created earlier in the year are not aware of the new certificate changes.
When the image is deployed we tftp a few scripts to the workstation which then registers the workstation in the zone.
My question is now that the certificates have changed I need to do a zac retrust.
Do I register the workstation and then run the retrust or do I run the retrust and then register the workstation ?
Or is there another / better way to do this.
    Thanks
    Mark

Assuming your images have old certs, when you deploy them I suspect all
you will need to do is run a "zac reg" command.
A prompt to accept the cert will appear unless you also script trusting
the new CA prior to running the reg command.
As others noted, you may want to tweak your image.
In this case, simply update the "initial-web-service" file in your image
from a device that has the updated CA trust.

  • Connecting VXI PC with Sun Workstation

    Hello,
I am wondering if there is an easier way to connect remotely to a VXI PC and its Instruments than using a VXI TCP server?
Can you connect the VXI PC to Max and have all of the instruments available through VISA?
Where is Max (Measurement and Automation Explorer) on the Sun Workstation? I installed LV 7.1 and did not see any location for this.
These are almost all of the questions, I promise.
    Michael Froehlich
    Lakewood, CA

    Hello, Michael and John,
I would like to add some additional information to John's answer.
You can use Remote VISA on your Solaris workstation to access the VXIpc's VXI interface using the same VISA API you would use to access a local device. First, on your VXIpc, you should install VISA Server if it's not already installed. (It likely is already installed, so you can probably skip that step.) Then configure the VISA Server through your VISA options in MAX to start when the computer starts and allow connections from your Sun workstation. After setting up your VXIpc in this way, from your Sun workstation you can connect to any VISA resource on the VXIpc by specifying the resource string "visa://[address-of-VXIpc]/[local-resource-name]". "[address-of-VXIpc]" should be replaced by the IP address in the form "a.b.c.d", or by the VXIpc's network name, and the "[local-resource-name]" should refer to any VISA resource that is on the VXIpc, such as "VXI0::0::INSTR". You can even use viFindRsrc() to find remote resources with this mechanism.
Using this information, you should be able to write your VISA application on your Sun workstation. To test your remote VISA setup, you can run NIvisaic on your Sun workstation to access the VXIpc interactively.
Note that if you are doing a lot of single-point access, with functions such as viIn and viOut, or using other small transfers, these accesses will be considerably slower than they would be if written directly on the VXIpc, as each one must travel across the network to get a response, and networks have a high latency.
Also, you will need NI-VISA 3.1 on your Solaris workstation to access your VXIpc this way.

  • Workstation Advice

Hi -- I'm getting started in motion graphics and visual effects, and intend to start freelancing in addition to my full-time web job. I'd like to invest in a workstation between now and January for $3000-$6000, but am having some difficulty in understanding all the technical aspects of AE and hardware configurations. Mainly I don't want to have to say "no" to a gig because I can't do something a client would want or because it would take me too long (because of the computer being is too slow, that is).
I've spoke with Adobe, and they recommend:
Processor: Xeon E5, at least 3.0GHz, 8 cores
    RAM: 32GB
    Graphics: NVIDIA Quadro 4000
    SSD: at least 512GB
I've been considering the HP Z840 (approx. $4000 + $400-600 for an SSD)
    Operating system
Windows 7 Professional 64 (available through downgrade rights from Windows 8.1 Pro 64)
    Processor
    Intel® Xeon® E5-2630 v3 (2.4 GHz, 20 MB cache, 8 cores)
    Number of Processors
    1
    Standard memory
    16 GB 2133 MHz DDR4 ECC Registered RAM (2 x 8 GB)
    Memory slots
8 DIMM (with 1 processor) and 16 DIMM (with 2 processors)
    Internal drive
    1 TB 7200 rpm SATA
    Optical drive
    Slim SATA SuperMulti DVD writer
    Graphics
    NVIDIA Quadro K4200 (4 GB)
    Drive Bays
    Four 3.5"
    Network interface
    Integrated Intel I210AT PCIe GbE
    Integrated Intel I218LM PCIe GbE
    Storage controller
    Integrated SATA 6.0 Gb/s
These specs run low to what Adobe recommended, but I don't know how to figure out what the difference makes in terms what AE is actually capable of doing for a client.
I've also been considering the MacPro, but didn't know how significant the lack of NVIDIA is, and if it is significant, if Mac offers the option to get a Quadro 4000 (it's not clear on their website).
I'd like to be able to do 3D work (probably with Cinema 4D) but don't know how 3D integrates into a motion graphics workflow--if being able to work in 3D would accelerate projects.
The Adobe agent said there were problems with both Mavericks and Windows 8.1.
For someone just getting into motion graphics, but also wanting to make money, are the MacPro or Z820/840 overkill? If not, then is $3000 way too low of an expectation to be able to get the hardware I would need? If I go up to $6000, where is AE going to get the most value (performance/$)?
    Thank you so much!
    Tom

    --Here's my rig:
    i7-3930k CPU
    AsRock X79 Extreme6 Mobo
    Nvidia Quadro 4000
    32Gb (4x8Gb) G.Skill RAM
    Thermaltake 2.0 water cooler
250Gb Samsung SSD for OS and apps
10Tb (2x3Tb and 2x2Tb Seagate HDDs) of internal storage
    OCZ ZX 1000W PSU
    Win 7 Ultimate SP1
I built it last year and (knock on wood) didn't have any problems with the workstation yet.
Most of my work is animation/motion graphics for clients on [often] tight deadlines and I usually have AE/PPro/Illustrator, Photoshop and Bridge running at the same time, sometimes C4D as well
--Performance improvements in comparison to my previous workstation (same GPU, quad-core i7 CPU):
    Cinema4D v14 render - 30%
    After Effects CS6 render - 50%
Adobe Premiere CS6 Exporter (mixed 2K and 4K footage to QT HD) - 45%
Adobe Media Encoder (from folder to folder, not through Premiere Pro) - 40%
Improved scrubbing and preview in 2K and 4K sequences and multitasking.
    *benchmark from a year ago
-Previews and scrubbing in After Effects and Premiere Pro rely on the video card, rendering utilizes 100% of CPU, same goes for Cinema4D. Preview chokes a little when scrubbing 5k footage in premiere, but in 1/2 rez plays back fine. I believe next gen graphics card would fix it, but not sure.
Hosting your media cache folders for PPro and AE on SSD drive helps a lot.
-Sometimes I run performance manager when rendering effects-heavy AE comp or rendering 5K footage and never noticed any tasks that would require more than 28Gb of RAM. My MoBo can support 64, but as of yet, I didn't see the need for the upgrade.
-I bought BluRay burner about 3 years ago, burnt exactly 1 job on it, and it just sits in the tower, collecting dust. I'm not quite sure if DVD/BR burner is a necessary part of a rig now days, unless you do wedding videos or something. In fact, I can't even recall using it as a DVD/BR reader.
    --Few things to consider-
Hexacore processor runs pretty hot - water cooling is suggested
This particular video card runs pretty hot too - 90C while idling. I spoke with PNY engineer and he suggested NVIDIA Quadro 4000K - it's cooler and has 3Gb of VRAM and the difference is only about $150. Crossfire is not really supported by Quadro 4000 either.
My workstation is currently worth around $2800, according to pcpartpicker.com, not counting monitors, wacom tablet and other, and it's still up to speed with competition and relatively future-proof - all i can think of upgrading right now is a graphics card - and be good for another few years or so. But this is not the first system i built, so if you want a plug-and-play solution, get a Mac Pro - specs on that thing are rather sweet and my colleague is very happy with it.
    hope that helped

  • Inventory causing workstation lockups

    Zen 3.2 sp2:
Inventory service set to run on user login with low priority. For Windows 98
computers (never on Win 2K/XP), out of 2000+ workstation, a handful will
lock up during the inventory and need to be hard booted. This happens as the
floppy drive is accessed, but testing has shown it will happen with or
without the floppy drive connected to the motherboard. The problem will also
happen regardless of user or context, but has shown to never happen if the
inventory policy is not enabled. Additionally, Filemon (program checking for
file access) has not shown consistency for which files were accessed last
    before the computer locks up.

    Jason,
I just ran into the same issue you're experiencing. After playing around, i found out that when creating the VM, if you choose the SCSI disk (with > 60GB capacity, no need to allocate space) and the LSI Logic adaptor (not Buslogic!) it works perfectly.

  • What's best for a first year Software Engineer college student?

I start classes at New England Tech at the end of March and I needed help in determining if a MacBook Air would be ok for what I need. Hope there are some Software Engineer's out there who can help decide. Definitely going with a Mac and less is better in regards with money. Thanks in advance.

Here are the computer requirements for the AS program:
    "Hardware required (subject to change):
1.5 Gig processor with 1 GIG RAM w/monitor
    80 GIG Hard Drive
    DVD player
    Cable or DSL internet connection
    Microphone/headset/speakers (USB preferred)
    Web camera
    Software required:
    VMWare workstation
    Qbasic
    Windows XP Professional
Office 2003: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint
    Windows 2003 Server
    Visual Studio 2005
Other than VMWare workstation, for which there is a $125 cost to students"
Seems like a PC would be more in order. Unless you purchase a MacBook Pro and create a Windows partition
