Engineering Drawings - Legend OCR

Hi, I scan hundreds of technical/engineering drawings but acrobat will not OCR oversized documents.  Every drawing has a legend in the bottom right corner of every drawing which contains a unique drawing number and it's version number, I want to be able to OCR the legend on thousands of technical drawings with just the legend section OCR'd so that I can then keyword search our legacy pdf drawings and OCR legends on any new scanned documents.  Does anyone know how to do this, currently I can batch scan A4/A3 documens and then keyword search after indexing files on Windows 7 and use the Windows 7 search function very effectively.
I have Acrobat X Standard and use a OCE Colourwave 300 Plotter with Adobe postscript.
Here is an example legend from an A0 pdf
Many thanks for any help with this, a google search on this specific query gave only 3 non-connected results!

Scan to a smaller page size.
Heck ANSI C will be more than large enough.
Avoid scan workflows that use lossy compression.
Use 300 ppi for resolution.
Scan to black and white (no grayscale, no color).
Your file sizes will be more manageable.
You'll be able to use Acrobat to OCR.
Use an Acrobat create PDF from scanner preset which will hold the desired configurations.
If desired OCR of the PDF can be part of the create PDF workflow.
Or, once you have some PDFs run an Action from Acrobat to batch OCR several PDFs at one time.
Be well...

  • How to embed B, and C size engineering drawings into Pages documents

I am attempting to create a technical manual which includes both 8.5x11 pages (portrait orientation) and larger B and C sized PDF drawings (landscape orientation). My current process is exporting a finished Pages document to a PDF, and then manually dragging in the other drawing PDFs to create the final version. However, as both drawings and text regularly change, there is a great deal of effort to manually assemble a final doc. Plus, the TOC and other auto-updating fields in the Pages document change as new text is added, so page numbering the final PDF is a nightmare - it is presently done in Acrobat Pro.
Any suggestions on how to make the complete manual do the following:
    1) remain in an easily editable Pages format conducive to regular updates?
    2) allow for automatic updating of pages, fields, TOC, etc. as new text and/or drawings are added?
    3) keep PDF drawings in vector format so they can be zoomed on-screen without becoming pixelated?
    Thanks,

In the past, Apple has system level support for portrait and landscape in one pagination. This system level support was in the graphics model, and was implemented e.g. in WordPerfect for Mac.
Presently, the situation is as you describe, first, the main pagination is output to PDF and, second, supplementary pages are inserted manually into the main pagination.
Off the cuff, I do not know if similar system level support is available in Mac OS X which is based on a somewhat different graphics model.
As I understand it, what you want is possible at application level in Microsoft Word, although I don't have experience with that application.
I would not know how to do what you want in QuarkXPress or InDesign in the versions I have. These applications using internal graphics implementations and bypass system level services on Mac OS X and Windows.

  • Production BOM and Engineering BOM

    Dear Gurus ,
I want to know difference between Eng BOM and Prod BOM . We have standard multilevel engineering BOM but if I use that BOM for routing assignment I can only see 1 st level components . Can I put all components in single level so that I can assign them in FG routing and pick list will have all the components ?
We are thinking of considering all assy as phantom so that there would be only one prod order for FG .
    Neal

    Hi,
The engineering BOM is as designed material BOM. It may include all the part upto the level of nuts & Bolts & also the engineering drawings. But in Production BOM you may not include the engg drawings & the C class material like nut & bolt, which may be planned on Reorder point planning.
I hope the answer is clear.

  • Regarding Engineering

    Hi,
I am working for a ECO Project. Here client have Engineering drawings(Auto CAD) which should be incorporated inBill of Material. How to do it? How to create an Engineering Bom and how convert to Production Bom?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Sudhakar

    Hi,
    - Drawing can be attached part of the BOM items in TCode : CS02.
    - Engg BOM can be created in TCode : CS01 with the Usage as Engineering.
    - You cannot convert the Engg BOM into Production BOM.
    - You need to create the Production BOM seperately, for which you can give the reference as Engg BOM.
    Hope this will help you.
    regards

  • Creating Complex Math Formulas in IDCS4 (Mac)

I have to create a 180 page Engineering handbook for a company, with LOTS of complex mathematic formulas. It also has a lot of engineering drawings, sketches, tables, etc. I'll use IDCS4 on a Mac platform, OSX 10.6.7. I also have Acrobat Pro, PS and Illustrator from the CS4 Suite. Their final deliverable will be a PDF, which the customer will make available for download, so I definitely want to convert text, images drawings, etc, to the smallest possible size.
Unfortunately, my customer has no electronic documents to work with. My current plan is to scan the original printed book, clean up the scans in Photoshop, then use OCR in Acrobat to convert characters to text. I will probably export to RTF, DOC, TXT or some other format so I can import into IDCS4 and create an electronic version (suggestions welcome).
Unfortunately, Acrobat OCR butchers the formulas and turns them into goobledegook. What plugins or programs are people using to create fairly complex mathematical formulas inside IDCS4? Can I do it inside IDCS4, or do I need to work in Word, Pages, or a dedicated mathematical formula program? I will need Greek symbols, integrals, differential equation capability, etc.
My main concern at this time is the formulas, but I am open to any suggestions on converting scanned images to vectors, handling tables, and the best way to get my text content into IDCS4 with the least amount of time and effort.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Silent print a PDF from a web page using Flex. We are targeting Windows and Mac with Arcobat reader installed

We are planning to Silent print a PDF from a web page using Flex. We are targeting Windows and Mac with Arcobat reader installed. I have tried using the AIR appliaction and it worked, But our requirement is NO INSTALL to the user machine for the silent printing. It is just from web page and silent printing to the default printer to the desktop/Laptop. Can anyone share your thoughts and experience with us. It will be very helpful..
For AIR : I tried the thread Re: AIR and PDF showing/silent printing

    Hey CodeMonkey & Ross,
Did you either of you ever find a solution? I'm stuck too, it seems I can get remote printing on all these PDFs to work but it just prints a blank page since I've been using Javascript in the browser, not Adobe's (they are Engineering drawings that I do not have permission to edit so I can't just insert code into them but I need to make work instructions). I've been scouring the internet for hours now, it seems that this thread is the only relevant/useful one at this point. No one else was trying to achieve this for similar reasons to mine.
    Thanks guys,

  • How can I select all stamps in a PDF file without having to click on each individual one?

I use the stamps and text box feature to mark up engineering drawings in abobe acrobat 10. Sometimes revisions come for already worked on drawings so I need to transfer my work over. Usually I just hold control and click each stamp and text box then hit CTRL+C to copy all of them. However, sometimes there are 200+ stamps on a single PDF and clicking each and every one without letting go of CTRL is a lot harder than it sounds.
Any ideas on how to do a "select all" function? (the actual select all doesn't work in this case, it looks for words.)
    Thanks

Stamps are basically comments. As such, they appear in the Comments List,
where you can easily select them by clicking inside the list and then
    pressing Ctrl+A.

  • Can I use Adobe Acrobat X Pro to batch convert v1.6 PDF files to v1.3?

Recently I have posted up a project so the contractor can read the text in the PDF and create hyperlinks from these text. These PDFs are in format of engineering drawings.
He informed me that he was going to use PHP to read the PDF text as javascript cannot.
He then asked me to convert the version of our current PDF files from v1.6 to a lower version: v1.3, because php cannot work with higher PDF versions.
So I found this PDF version converter: [link removed by forum host] but it only converts one by one. I have like a few hundreds of them, so I really need something to do batch convert.
Could anyone help me out here? We (the small business I am working at) do not have Adobe Acrobat X Pro but will buy it if it can do the job.
Otherwise could anyone advise me of any other software that can do this?
    Thanks heaps.

Yes, Acrobat XI Pro can do this very easily. You can create an Action that runs the PDF Optimizer tool, which can convert the file content so it's compatible with any earlier version of PDF (as well as other things). Actions can then be run against a folder of files.

  • Line Art in Acrobat 5.0

I was recently looking at some engineering drawings in Acrobat 5.0, and I
was reminded of how that version would render lines at some level of gray
when they are zoomed to less than one pixel wide. In my opinion, it looks
really nice, particularly when the entire page is fit on the screen.
Looking at the same drawings in Reader 8 and 9, all lines are drawn black,
regardless of the magnification. So when I zoom to fit, everything bleeds
together as solid black. Is there a way to enable the type of rendering
    that was used in 5.0?
    Thanks!

  • Typewriter tool Acrobat 9

    UPDATE 2:
Please see attached simpl scanned file.
When I first open it Typewriter tool works just fine.
If I extract a page from it, not deleting the page, then the typewriter tool only allows typing text and not modifying anything like spacing, etc.
    Update:
    Just ran a test:
    1) I extracted the entire document to help enable the typewriter tool editi features. Tested the extracted file and everything works as expected.
    2) I extracted one page out of this new document. The problem re-appeared.
So what it means is that when I extract a page the typewriter tool gets set to disable editing features.
    Strange?
    =================
    Hello.
My office just upgraded us to Acrobat Pro 9.1.3 on our XP- Pro.
The Typewrighter tool works unpredictably. In some cases you can type text in but you are not allowed to change its size, spacing and so on. The features are dimmed out. I am working on a file with multiple sheets which are originally scanned into pdf. What I found out is when the problem comes up, if I extract all the sheets into another file the problem goes away and then comes back up after a while, requiring me to re-extract the entrie document.
I have checked file settings and the security setting is always set to none.
Some of the things I am doing to these files (engineering drawings) is I am cropping a portion of the drawing and then extracting that page, saving it into its own unique file. Then I am undoing the cropping and moving on to other things. In some cases I am placing annotations on the files. I don't beieve any of these activities should be causing unpredictable performance of the Typewriter tool.
I have searched KB and all over the internet and have not seen any doscussions on this.
I would appreciate any insight that anyone can bring to us.
    Farzad

    Hi Anna.
I just updated to 9.2 and the problem still persists.
The test should not be on the extracted page/file. The test should be on the file the page was extracted from.
The bug is that the typewriter tool's features become disabled in a document once a page or pages have been extracted from it. The extraction seems to be causing the problem.
Can you try again to see if you can recreate the problem?
    Thanks.

  • Automatically Create Hyperlink Using Product Name in PDF text

    Hi,
I've recently been told that all the product names in our PDF documents from here on out have to link to their component files (these are also PDF files) on our server (which is currently hosted locally). This is a problem because any given document is generated as a Solidworks Assembly engineering drawings. Before I try my first attempt at creating an Indesign Script (on something that sounds kind of complicated for a novice like me) I was wondering if there are any existing scripts out there that do something like the following:
Find all instances in the text of product names beginning in 3 capital letters and ending in a number (digit)
Create a hyperlink to the component parts files using the product name found in the text. Taking the product name--CAI623, for instance--and creating a hyperlink
So the end result, for example, would be that a product name like CAI623 would become a hyperlink and would open the component part file like CAI623-1
It seems like it might be a relatively common problem, so I'm hoping that someone out there may have a resource already available. Oh, I'm on Indesign CS5 on a PC. Would prefer Javascript so our vendors could use it on a Mac. If not, I'll get to crackin' on making it myself.
Thanks in advance for any pointers!

I wrote a few similar scripts. If you're interested, give me your e-mail via PM.

  • How to create a PDF from DWF or Revit with hyperlinks?

DWF file has 20 sheets of engineering drawings.  First 10 are plans with section, detail and elevation callouts.  In DWF I can click on one of these callouts and be brought directly to the detail sheet with the detail on it (one of the second 10 pages in the DWF).  Is there a way to get this to work in PDF format - click on a section mark on plan and automatically go to the page with the section on it.

You could convert all of the sheets to PDF, combine all of them, then use the Link tool to create the callout/page jump effect you're looking for.

  • Options for saving PDF files in Acrobat X Pro

In Adobe Acrobat X Pro, there are options to Save a file as PDF/A, PDF/X, and PDF/E.  I could not find a description on what those switches/parameters do.  Would appreciate anyone telling me how they differ from a regular Save, or where I can find online documentation for them.

In short you can find several references on line for these:
    PDF/A - Archive format
    PDF/X - For publishers
PDF/E - Optimized for engineering drawings
For more info, check the web as suggested. The ISO is even there.

  • Image created is cropped, doesn't match preview

In creating any image size larger than 11x17, I get the same result. The document previews correctly, but the PDF image is cropped on the right and bottom. (The remaining area is white space.) I've attempted this by "adding" new page sizes under properties and by "creating custom page size" under Converter Advanced Options.
Searching help and the forum has returned only one document that seems like it might apply. There's a help doc on "Presets" that talks about Engineering Drawings. However, this doesn't show up under my settings options and the doc is totally inadequate in describing how to get to it. There's a reference to a location of "extras" in docs & settings, but it isn't there on my system and a search for the folder has come up blank for anything related to Adobe.
I've got a couple of hours invested in this and I'm pretty frustrated. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Windows XP Pro / Acrobat Standard 8.1.2

I've got a couple of days invested in the same problem. The good news is that when you choose your file to be converted, if you will change the type of files box to just the file you want to convert (For example: change "all files" to "doc" files), a little settings box will come up on the right that will allow you to change the size of the pdf documents. The bad news is the pdf still converts to letter size, no matter what you put the settings at. If you find out what the problem is there, please post it.

  • Outbound SOAP Message with Attachment

The requirement is to invoke a web service by sending attachments in the outbound SOAP message. The attachment body needs to be assigned in the message flow, using an element E1 extracted from the message incoming into the flow.
I am trying to use attachments variable to set content-type (text/xml) and body using E1. However, these are not getting assigned to attachments variable, as seen by logging the variable.
I was told that $attachments cannot be changed inside the flow (it is marked black in the console unlike the header and body that are marked green). If that is the case, how do we invoke services using attachments from a message flow?
    Any pointers would be appreciated.

    Hi,
A SOAP message may need to be transmitted together with attachments of various sorts, ranging from facsimile images of legal documents to engineering drawings. Such data are often in some binary format. For example, most images on the Internet are transmitted using either GIF or JPEG data formats. In this document we describe a standard way to associate a SOAP message with one or more attachments in their native format in a multipart MIME structure for transport.
yes it is possible to send attachment with the SOAP.
    SOAP Message Packages
A "SOAP message package" contains a primary SOAP 1.1 message. It may also contain additional entities that are not lexically within the SOAP message but are related in some manner. These entities may contain data in formats other than XML. The primary SOAP 1.1 message in a message package may reference the additional entities. Such additional entities are often informally referred to as "attachments." This section describes how to construct SOAP message packages and how SOAP processors will process them.
A SOAP message package is constructed using the Multipart/Related media type, which is defined in RFC 2387. The rules for the construction of SOAP message packages are as follows:
The primary SOAP 1.1 message must be carried in the root body part of the Multipart/Related structure. Consequently the type parameter of the Multipart/Related media header will always equal the Content-Type header for the primary SOAP 1.1 message, i.e., text/xml.
The MIME Multipart/Related encapsulation of a SOAP message is semantically equivalent to a SOAP protocol binding in that the SOAP message itself is not aware that it is being encapsulated. That is, there is nothing in the primary SOAP message proper that indicates that the SOAP message is encapsulated .
