English keyboard instead of french !

When I enter a caption in LR (french version), "a" is entered instead of "q" and "q" instead of "a".
On english keyboard, first letter is "q" on first raw and "a" in second raw.
On french one, first letter is "a" on first raw and "q" in second raw.
So, it seems that LR works as if I had an english keyboard.
Of course, others softwares (Word, Photoshop...) dont make this mistake...
Does anybody knows what I am doing wrong ?

Sorry I can't be more precise but I'm sitting on a German PC and it took me ages to find it the first time round. However, in XP there are 2 ways to change the layout of your keyboard. The first (and only if you have in the Taskbar (bottom right) a small icon indicating which language your keyboard currently is set to. By right clicking on this you can bring up a menu in which you can add another language. I regularly switch between a German and English keyboard and have set a keyboard shortcut (Alt + Shift) to do this. You can also set your own preference within the menu. If the current keyboard setting is not present in the Taskbar than I'm afraid you'll have to go diving in the Help file - changing keyboard - or something like that. Sorry I can't be more helpful at this time - it is there, it is an option, you'll just have to find it.

Does anyone know how to get a MBP with an international English keyboard instead of the US English one? I find the rectangular return key almost impossible to get used to after years of using an L-shaped one.

The MBP ships with a standard keyboard, though it may be possible to remap individual keys. However, you're going to still have a standard keyboard.
You can change keyboards if you have a desktop Mac, and there are several options in a variety of languages. But a notebook is limited in this way.

Satellite 2400-103 changing from french to english keyboard

I have a french satellite s2400-103 laptop which is running english windows and software - which is fine as long as i don't have to type in a hurry.
Can anyone help me with the part number for an english keyboard and any ideas as to where i might get hold of one

PS: I assume your keyboard language settings in the Regional and Language options are set to the UK layout. Try to change it to French. In this case you will get the same signs as on the keyboard mentioned.

[SOLVED] Awesome 3.5 using english keyboard layout instead of Xorg's

Keyboard layout was OK on 3.4.
For 3.5 and git version, Awesome defaults to english layout. Calling awesome.restart() (e.g. with SUPER+SHIFT+R) will correctly set the layout according to Xorg config. That's quite annoying indeed.
Only Awesome is affected, i.e. all other applications will use the Xorg config. So basically the affected parts are
* key bindings
* Run command
* Run lua code
Using
* up to date x86_64 system
* blank user session
* startx and 'exec awesome' as the sole command.
I couldn't find any related issue on the web, seems strange to me since I shouldn't be the only one using a non-english keyboard layout !
Any idea ?

Same here, but as with nomorewindows case, I just need to restart awesome, but I need to do it every time I boot. Both my console and X are configured to dvorak, but in X it's set through .xinitrc.
I'm going to try and see whether putting
echo "awesome.restart()" | awesome-client
into my .xinitrc will help.
By the way, my .xinitrc starts awesome in the following way:
awesome & wmpid=$!
[whole bunch of misery involving mpd, urxvt and setting the keymap in X]
[above for restarting awesome]
wait $wmpid

Keyboard stuck in French

On one profile, the keyboard settings are French even if I change the language to U.S. I currently have it set to U.S. Extended, but I can't get the key mapping to match the language. I'm running 10.4.10 on a G5 using a standard Apple USB keyboard. I've repaired permissions and the disk to no effect. Help!

It's all the apps, including Finder, and changing the settings doesn't help. French wasn't on to begin with, and now even when the language says "English" the keyboard is still mapped as French.
The "Language" settings are not relevant for this problem. Could you confirm that you looked at the "Input Menu" tab of System Prefs/International? The box that needs to be checked (with all others unchecked) is called "US" (not "English").
If you've done that, try setting up a new user account and see if the problem persists when logged into that. If not, then it means some .plist or cached in the main account needs to be trashed.
Regarding the mapping, could you confirm it is French, so the top row produces azerty instead of qwerty?

Macbook bought in France with a international english keyboard problem

My friend bought a macbook for france apple online store, he choosed a international english keyboard layout, but when he got it, he found that the keyboard is neither english laybout nor french layout, because there is not any configurations that matches his physical keyboard buttons.
The A - Z buttons is as the US keyboard, but the ;'~`[](){}/?! etc. are not correct, that means when u choose the US layout from the system preference->international, the A - Z work, but the ;'~`[](){}/?! are not at where u see them, when u choose FR layout, A - Z are not correct, british english doesn't work, too.
I have tried all the english countries and french countries, but no one works with 100% of the buttons.
Can Apple give me a solution to the problem? or if the macbook that he got is not well assembled?

Yes… I would at a minimum contact Apple sales or AppleCare regarding this. You have two options though. You can ask for a new one, given they can't simply swap out a keybaord you need to exchange the whole thing.
Otherwise, you can use it as a bargaining chip and say ask for a free external International English keyboard and a discount on your next Apple Store purchase… for instance.
Regardless, be polite yet firm with them as you did not get what you ordered.

Some applications don't put accents with non-english keyboard layouts

I'm using a Portuguese keyboard with three different macs running Mac OS Tiger 10.4.8/9. Some applications (like Motion 2 and Swift Publishing 2) don't allow writing some accented characters, like (è) or (ê), that are accessed by Shift+normal key, but they do display correctly other accented letters, for instance (é), witch are accessed directly without the Shift key. This happens only in some applications and with a european keyboard layout (I tried it also with the spanish and french keyboards layouts), but not with other applications (it works all right with Word or iPhoto) and the english keyboards.
Any sugestion as how to solve this? If I create the text in some other application and paste it in Motion it works! But it's a drag.

[LR2 - SOLUTION] Using Lightroom in englsih with a non-english keyboard layout

Hi, Many of us, non native english speaking LR users, are using LT in english on a system having a non-US keyboard layout. The conseqeunce of this is that we can't reach a lot of keyboard shortcuts because LR doesn't offer any interface for configuring them. However, there's a workaround. I'll explain here what I did for the french language but you can apply this to your own language. For the non english languages, the keyboard shortcuts are defined in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2\Resources\<language>\TranslatedStrings.txt. If you are using LR in english, this file is not used and there's no similar file in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2\Resources\en. But you can create one containing only the shortcuts that you need. I have created a new TranslatedStrings.txt file containing only the keyboard shortcuts defined for the french version. I did this by copying only the lines containing the following sequences: ....Key=... ....KeyShifted=... ...AgPanel/LeftPanelShortcut... ...AgPanel/RightPanelShortcut... ...MenuShortcut/DecreaseRating= ...MenuShortcut/IncreaseRating= (french users can find this file here: http://www.mainsoft.fr/Files/LR/TranslatedStrings.txt . Copy this file to "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2\Resources\en" and relaunch Lightroom. Now you have the same keyboard shortcuts as when using LR in french. Interestingly enough, if you hit ctrl + < , the LR keyboard shortcut panel is displayed and it shows your new shortcuts. Spanish support using English Keyboard

We have a web based chat applicaiton where in we have an end user chatting with a helpdesk agent. At the agent side, he needs to chat with the end user in Spanish. But the agent has an English Keyboard. The constraints in this scenario are
1. The agent needs to chat with various end users (English/Spanish/French) at the same time. Every time he cannot change the language settings available at the OS level and change the keyboard settings to chat with various users.
2. The agent might not know the windows based codes for the letters in spanish accent. so he cannot directly key in the codes also. Moreover, this methodology will reduce the efficiency of the agent
We need some programmatic way of doing this in the applet to switch to other languages using ENGLISH keyboard. Some mapping is required. Any ideas, what technology/utility to use?

I am not sure I understand constraint number 1: are you saying that an agent who is able to remember the key placement of a Spanish and a French keyboard while using an English keyboard is unable to use a simple hot key for switching input languages?
I am not saying it might not be worthwhile to do what you suggest, just puzzled that it is viewed as that much of a problem (compared to keeping Spanish vs. French vs. English keyboard layouts straight - I am having enough trouble remembering the Danish keyboard layout while using an English keyboard :-))

App store in english, iTunes partially in french on iPhone 4?

I currently have 2 iPhone 4's, an iPad 2, and a MacBook Pro that I sync all my devices from using the same iTunes account. All my account settings are for Canadian English and the App store and iTunes all display properly on 3 of the devices... except on one iPhone 4 the iTunes store is half in english and half in french (The top bar displays in english "New Releases" "Top Tens" etc. the bottom bar displays as "Musique" "Recherche" etc.) The App store on this phone is 100% fine and in English. I have tried resetting all of my language settings and syncing the phone, I've logged out of the itunes account and back in again to no avail. Is my only option at this point restoring the phone in hopes it fixes this annoying issue? This happened after upgrading to iOS5

Finally went to the Apple store and unfortunately, the only way to fix it was to restore the software.
Make sure you back-up your phone first.
It's a bit of a pain, especially since the ringtones and ebooks did not uploaded back automatically on my iPhone once I restored the software and asked itunes to put everything back on the phone (and I lost 3 apps, thankfully they were free so I just downloaded them again).
But it works!!!

I went to Power Buy in Central world and found out that the keyboard for the macs have thai characters as well as English ones. I wanted to buy a mac with plain English keyboard. yeah I use a windows keyboard both in OS X and in windows on my imac I pref the split ms type of keyboard over the tiny apple keyboard and I pref the razor mouse so those are my main input sources in both yosemite and windows8.1
