Engraved characters in fonts

I wonder if anyone can help. I would like to use engraved characters in one of the fonts (Hoefler Text). The option seems to be there in the Typography menu of the font book but when I click on the option, nothing changes. Am I missing something?

You also need to select All Capitals in the Letter Case part of Typography (or use the shift key to type caps). The option is not available for lower case letters.
Also I think you probably need to be using an Apple app (not MS or Adobe).

  • Displaying Asian Characters/Other Fonts

I'm having trouble trying to display other fonts/asian fonts in my SWING application. I know this has probably be asked to death, but here's my scenario.
I don't want to modify the font.properties file if possible because this is a SWING applet. I'm trying to use the "Arial Unicode MS" font from Windows to display some unicode characters, but all I get is the dreaded square boxes.
I've tried to access the GraphicsEnvironment.GetLocal.... but I get a security error for a missing class (I'm using JRE1.3 on Windows2k).
Here's a snippet of my code:
    UIManager.put("Label.font", new Font("Arial Unicode MS", Font.PLAIN, 40));
    JFrame frame = new JFrame("Test Window");
    final JLabel label = new JLabel("\u88B9 alcsnjdfd \uBA85\uC554\uBE44");
    frame.getContentPane().add(label);
    What am I doing wrong?

  • Problem in print out with English characters (THANGSAN font)

    Save Our Environment. Save Yourself.
    Hi Experts!!
I have created a smartform and print program which should actually print some Thai characters and English characters too. I created a smartstyle and have some 10 paragraph formats and are all have THANGSAN font. So, I am printing all the thai and english characters in THANGSAN font only.
When print preview is seen, the output is very fine, but when being printed, the thai characters are appearing fine but the english characters' font is being changed to somehting else (courier or arial). Why is this happening so? Because of this, all the output is being merged and looking very weird.
The smartform is created in EN and is translated to all languages. All user has logged on to SAP in EN language.
Can somebody please help me out with whether the problem is with THANGSAN or the printer?
P.S. The smartform is actually similar to the standard script Z_RVINVOICE01 in which only THANGSAN is used.

  • Flash CS4 - lost characters during font embedding

Does anybody know how to force Flash to embed all needed
    characters when
creating font symbol? When embedded font is used in text
    fields instead of
device fonts a lot of characters stop to be accessible. Is

    Hi Sean,

Physically in Flash but in order to see the effect of using
    it is necessary
to turn on embedFonts=true in TextField.

If you turn on size reporting you will be able to see what
    exactly fonts are
embeded. I recommend you to enter some characters in
    "Character Embedding"
and export SWF. You will see all of those characters. Now add
    font symbol to
the library using the same font. You will see in the report
    that Flash will
ignore everything what you previously have entered. All
    embedded characters
this is always the same character set. There are no a lot of
    characters used
    in European languages.

  • Chinese characters, or font

    Hi. Using XP and CS4.
I need to write a couple lines in Chinese and I have the actual written translation, but need to find a font or something that will work in Photoshop. Or I can look through each character installed on my computer that is under the character map in Windows.
I'm just wondering if there is a way to use Chinese fonts in Photoshop by using a font or the keyboard or if there is a plug in out there or something. Thought I'd ask in case someone else does the same thing.
I run my computer in English and I have tried adding the Chinese language, but when I do the Adobe programs run really slow....

I don't know much about Dreamweaver but trying to use it to create an invitation in Chinese. I tried to edit a template I used for an English invitation. But when I preview it in IE, some characters become weird but some are fine. I tried to use different fonts to test, and set different encoding from Edit > Preference. But nothing really changes. I have attached the file in IE. Anyone knows what's wrong?
    Thanks a ton!

The only help I can offer is a post made by David Powers to a similar question some time ago:
Change the page encoding. Modify > Page properties > Encoding. Depending
on the type of Chinese, choose Chinese Traditional (normally used in

  • Flash CS4 - How to embed characters into font symbol ?

Does anybody know how to decide what characters will be

For now, it seems that Flash has unchangable list of
    characters which will
be added. Unfortunately there are no characters used in
    central Europe which
means that Flash can't be used to present dynamic text

In the meantime I have found the source of the problem!
    Responsibility for
all problems bears option "export for ActionScript" checked
    on in font
symbol. When this option is activated another character set
    is embedded into
SWF file than in case when option says inactive.
I have created FLA file with one dynamic field and embedded
    font symbol with
default name Font 1. Dynamic field has 6 characters added to
    "Character
Embedding". "Font 1" family is assigned to this text field.
    When SWF is
exported then those 6 characters are present in size report.
    Only those
characters can be used in text field content obviously. Other
    will be not
    displayed, which is ok.
Now I turn on option "export for ActionScript" in font
    symbol. The size
report shows that much more characters is exported but
    WITHOUT any Polish
characters even if they were included into mentoned above 6
    characters.
Since then it stopped to be possible using CE characters.
If you want I can create 2 FLA files differ from each other
    state of that
    option.

-- according to a suggestion from: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 82#p683282 am posting this as  a separate thread--
Does anyone happen to encounter the following problem.
Before the update: no local (polish) characters in the GUI apps when I type (openbox) but the characters in CLI apps run under openbox display fonts correctly while typing
After the update, situation is reversed (i have tried to configure the hal policy but apparently I am missing something)
GUI apps under openbox display polish fonts correctly when I type and CLI apps (tilda, gvim, etc) dispplay '?' instead of local charcters when I type
Displaying previously created files which include polish characters display squares insted of the aforementioned glyphs.
I have tried numerous hints found on the web:

    - regenerate locale
    - set xset fp+ /usr/share..
...but I'm running out of ideas.
So if any of you knows how to get rid of that crappy behaviour please share your priceless knowledge smile

  • Typing of accented characters changes font

I'm using Illustrator CS6 on a Mountain Lion Mac. Got a weird problem with one of my fonts. I'm used to type accented characters like é by typing option-e plus e. Which works so far. On one of my fonts however, EuroComic, when I want to type the é character and start with option-e, it already changes the font to Myriad Pro. Typing the e after that makes it é, but in Myriad Pro, not EuroComic. It has always worked before when I was still using Snow Leopard. And it's not a font problem I think, cause in Indesign that same way of using option-e plus e works. The é is at the correct spot in EuroComic cause when I select all text and change it to EuroComic (after having typed that é), not only does all text turn into EuroComic again, but also that now Myriad Pro é turns back to EuroComic é. What could it be that could make illustrator turn the font to Myriad Pro after typing option-e on that parcitular font? With other fonts like Arial etc. I don't have that problem.

    Colaflash wrote:
why is it thinking the é isn't available in EuroComic while it is?
Exactly what I said: "it thinks you are trying to insert a character that is unavailable in the current font. (You are, but only for a short while.)"
It has nothing to do with the 'location' of "é" -- this is the same as in every font. It's due to the way you can type in accented characters in Mac OS X.
You type an acute character; Illustrator receives it and switches immediately to the fallback font (Myriad Pro). Next you type an 'e'. Your friendly Mac OS, watching over your shoulder, removes the acute accent and replaces it with an é. Illustrator doesn't notice this and leaves the font changed to Myriad.

  • I'm not good with computers or software.  I'm trying to save a RAW Ai file I created.  When I currently save it, the color or characters/size fonts are not coming up in the saved version. How can I save, and have all of my information

Not going with computers.  Trying to figure out how to save Ai RAW file with colors/fonts etc.  Currently saves, but does not have colors and font information.

When you say "Colors/Fonts" are not saved, I'm not sure what you mean. How have you determined they were not saved?
Also, not sure what a "RAW" AI file is. I assume you mean simply a native format .ai file.
.ai will save all font and color information. It does not "embed" fonts, but it saves what fonts were used and will call the correct fonts when reopened (assuming fonts are available on the system).
CC 2014 also has a "Package" feature that will collect assets (fonts and images) into a central folder for easy distribution.

This is from Kurt Lang, our resident Font Guru:
A’s with boxes around them is always a sign of trouble with the main system
    font, Lucida Grande.
Quick possible fix is to remove ALL font cache files from the system to see
if it's just bad cache data. For that, you need to use OnyX or other utility
which will remove both system and user cache files. A Safe Mode boot won't
work since it only removes cache data from the user account you do a safe
    boot to.
If after that the problem returns, then Lucida Grande itself is damaged and
    needs to be replaced.

  • HP Laserjet 1536dnf MFP printer cancellation of fonts

I have a technical question.  I developed my own word processing and printing programs starting with the original IBM and epson dot matrix printer and then the HP Laserjet printers.  Students a University of Pennsylvania and Princeton used my programs
to write their Ph. D. theses.  Now there are plenty of programs do to this but I have  kept my current.  Everything was fine until the printer listed in the title.  My program loads fonts in the printer.  The font # are 7000,7001,7002,7003,7004.
I choose these numbers so as not to interfere with other fonts.  My program runs in DosBox and sends data to the printer by writing to the file TRASH789.PCL in the directory C:\SPOOL and the program printfile (downloaded from the internet) spools the
file to the printer.  When my program begins it sends the esc sequence that selects the fonts.  Also I set the  line feed to be 1/2 a line feed.  (My programs works like a typewriter and subscripts and superscripts are just a 1/2 space
up or down.)   On all other HP printers for say 20 years everything is fine but with the printer mentioned above my font selection and 1/2 line feed are canceled.  Various sequences of character will cause this to happen.  It is pretty
random.  One sequence I have isolated is below.
                        a3  a3  a3
The a's can be upper or lower case.  There can be other characters between then etc.  But if the first few lines that at printed contain these characters the fonts and 1/2 line spacing are canceled.  If you put a paragraph before the a3,a3,a3
it will not happen.  It the a3's occur at the top of a new page it will happen.
I have tried various things to fix the error like repeatedly telling the printer to select my fonts, or loading an empty rasher of graphics a the top of the page but nothing works.   Fortunately for 95% of what I print it is not a
problem.  I have work around solutions, making a PDF file using GHOSTPCL, or using another program that uses rasher graphics.  (I wrote this some years ago when I bought a DESKJET printer.  Now computers are so fast that the time delay with
the rasher graphics program is hardly  noticeable.
I realize that the number of people with my problems can be counted on one hand so there is no great motivation for fixing this problem but given the other problems with this printer (I have seen mentioned on the web) it seems
to me there may be a connection.  (I only bought this printer, scanner, fax, etc)  because I had a grant that was expiring and I wanted to spend the money.  My guess is that will all the functions of this printer, probably set up by different
groups of people, the printer has glitches.  As someone who has spent years on my own programs I know it can take months to figure them out.  My only hope is that maybe this might help someone.
       Thanks for your attention.

    Hi treborpowers,
According to your description, you developped a program which runs in DosBox. When this program running, it sends request to DosBox, then DosBox sends request to Windows to call  Microsoft font 7000,7001,7002,7003, 7004, then Windows responds
this request, however, the program could not print the font in DosBox correctly. Right?
Since it is difficult to narrow down the issue is cause by Windows, in order to resolve this issue effectively, please get help from the professional forum about the programming language.

  • How to embed fonts AND keep bookmarks?

    Hello, newbie here.
I use MS Sql Server Reporting Services to generate a lengthy report, often over 100 pages. The report must be distributed as a PDF, and it must use some slightly unusual fonts, and it needs bookmarks. Reporting Services has a PDF rendering engine which can insert the bookmarks, but it cannot embed fonts (I'm using Visual Studio 2005).
So after some investigation, I saw that I can embed fonts by converting the PDF to a Postscript (PS) file, then use Distiller to re-create the PDF with embedded fonts. A bit clumsy, but it works, EXCEPT that apparently the conversion to PS removes the bookmarks.
So I am guessing that I'm going about this all wrong, and am hoping some one here can show me a better way. Oh yes, I have Acrobat 9 Pro and Distiller 9.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave

You may be overcomplicating this. Hopefully, depending on which SQL report writer you use, you can configure it to embed fonts or at least a subset of the fonts at the time of the report generation. I have never had much luck with it outputting bookmarks so if you have mastered that, you have me beat. I took a section from my SQL report help on embedding fonts and and plagiarizing and pasting it below:
    Font Embedding
When possible, the PDF rendering extension embeds the subset of each font that is needed to display the report in the PDF file. Fonts that are used in the report must be installed on the report server. When the report server generates a report in PDF format, it uses the information stored in the font referenced by the report to create character mappings within the PDF file. If the referenced font is not installed on the report server, the resulting PDF file might not contain the correct mappings and might not display correctly when viewed.
Fonts are embedded in the PDF file when the following conditions apply:
Font embedding privileges are granted by the font author. Installed fonts include a property that indicates whether the font author intends to allow embedding a font in a document. If the property value is EMBED_NOEMBEDDING, the font is not embedded in the PDF file. For more information, see "TTGetEmbeddingType" on msdn.microsoft.com.
    The Font is TrueType.
The characters in the string that has the Font property set are Unicode, not ANSI. No font embedding occurs for ANSI characters.
Fonts are referenced by visible items in a report. If a font is referenced by an item that has the Hidden property set to True, the font is not needed to display rendered data and will not be included in the file. Fonts are embedded only when they are needed to display the rendered report data.
If all of these conditions are met for a font, the font is embedded in the PDF file. If one or more of these conditions is not met, the font is not embedded in the PDF file.
    Fonts on the Client Computer
When a font is embedded in the PDF file, the computer that is used to view the report (the client computer) does not need to have the font installed for the report to display correctly.
When a font is not embedded in the PDF file, the client computer must have the correct font installed for the report to display correctly. If the font is not installed on the client computer, the PDF file displays a question mark character (?) for unsupported characters.
Verifying Fonts in a PDF File
The fonts that are embedded in the PDF file are included in the Fonts property that is saved with the file, as metadata.
To check if the font is embedded go to File/Properties/Fonts and see the status of the fonts, if they say embedded or subset embedded you are all set.
lt me know where your process lets you down and I can try to help from there.

    Regards,

why the heck would you use read_text when you want to print a text/note on a form?
in SAP-Script we use the "INCLUDE"-Statement for this.
and in smartforms a Text-node of type 'I'.
you can not write all in one line and expect the system to handle this like a floating text.
one character takes a cretain amount of space (varying for different characters and font and font sizes).
you Page has a certain width, so where is the miracle in the thesis that on a sheet of paper with a certain width just a certain amount of characters will fit?

  • Thai characters to PDF using smart forms

    Hi All,
I have created a smartform which displays order details. The address contains thai characters. While viewing the preview, the characters are displayed correctly.
The OTF form of this print is converted into PDF using the function module CONVERT_OTF and sent as mail attachment.
The issue is in the PDF attachment, thai characters are converted to junk characters. Can anyone suggest how to overcome this?
FYI, for displaying thai characters, chinese font THANGSAN is used.
    Thanks & regards,
    Juli.

    Hi,
There is no command like this. If you use device type PDFUC or SWINCF to create the  spool before converting via RSTXPDFT4, then the PDF conversion will be unicode. See SAP note #999712. But you still need to upload true type fonts to support the Thai characters, this time via report RSTXPDF2UC as per note 999712 and the attached guide. The Adobe fonts don't support Thai so it is needed to embed Angsana new true type font into the PDF file to support Thai characters.
    Regards,
    Aidan
