Enhanced Backup

When I try to back up my system using enhanced backup and restore, I get a message saying "you have reached your defined space limit reserved for backup storage", with added storage requesting me to click OK.  When I click OK, I get the same box again.
Can anyone help with this problem.

  • Using Lenovo's Enhanced Backup & Restore Questions

    Hi all,
I am wondering if anyone has any experience in using Lenovo's Enhanced Backup & Restore.
My situation is that I am thinking of updating the firmware on my MyDigitalSSD 128GB mSATA SSD to the latest version. However, from what I read, the update will wipe the mSATA SSD. Also, at the moment, I have been backing up my C:\ to an external HDD weekly using Lenovo's Enhanced Backup & Restore software.
My question is if my steps below are workable and if the Enhanced Backup & Restore program will restore my system back to the latest backup?
    1. Use Enhanced Backup & Restore program to backup the latest image of my system.
    2. Update firmware on my mSATA SSD. All data will be wiped.
    3. Use my Recovery Discs to restore the mSATA SSD to Lenovo's factory image.
    4. Use Enhanced Backup & Restore program to restore the latest image.
Any comments, anyone? Thanks in advance!

You can only restore to the same hub, as the serial numbers have to match.

  • T410 enhanced backup using ThinkPad secure HDD 500

The ThinkVantage program is not recognizing this drive when using enhanced back-up and restore.  Drive works otherwise.  Is this a problem with the enhanced back-up and restore, and is there a fix?

I think no one "normally" working will use touch specific elements of Win8! Metro is one part of Win8, but i think normal desktop mode will be preferred by 99 %  of the users.
With the new upcoming Microsoft Surface, touch might work well, but i just don't see myself touching my laptop's screen.

    Hi Anish.S,
According to your description, you want to backup SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse (PDW) database.
Before we get to the backup and restore syntax, it’s worth noting that the Parallel Data Warehouse (PDW) appliance architecture offers an environment that greatly enhances backup times (due to dedicated storage and network interfaces, see the following post
    for more information -
    https://saldeloera.wordpress.com/2012/07/09/lesson-1-of-parallel-data-warehouse-basic-architecture-overview/).
For more details how to backup and restore database on PDW, please refer to the following blog:

  • A mass request ( Things need to be added, improved...

Things need to be added, improved, modifying or even be developed in any update or upcoming version of Windows Phone - in my opinion - are as follows :
    System Improvements :
1- Windows Phone must include a System , folder & files Management app as embedded app rather than an external or independent limited functions app . Also files Explorer or Files Management app should handle all files ( whatever it was ) that are being transfered through Bluetooth and shows save location on the mobile .
2- Install applications from external memory ( SD Card ) without needing to Internet connection , as well as doing search in the phone using Bing search button without need for an Internet connection .
3- Allow phone book contacts linking to any of Social or communication , dialing or calling apps , such as Line , Telegram , KakaoTalk & WhatsApp as an example and not being limited to Skype, Facebook or Linkedin only .
4-  Windows Phone must support running Adobe flash files ( swf & flv ) , Animated GIFs & Java files to be run & play on all WP8 devices .
5- Fix consuming huge amounts of data on memory by installed apps , the matter that often not found on a PC! .
6 - one of many defects / faults / shortcomings in WP 8.1 is that user can't add any apps by himself to run within apps for video calls that exist in phone settings , nor adding apps in notifications action center , or apps that its status can be appear on lock screen , unlike ( rather than ) predefined apps by system itself , as well as , there is no ( choice / function / option ) to add an application that can be used to run different function , such as selecting Adobe photoshop Express to be within apps that can run picture files captured .
7- There is no data connection switching & data speed connection type ( 4,3,2 G ) switching function in WP 8.1 notifications + actions center as well as Alarms function .
8- Support memory Card readers and flash USB through mobile's micro USB .
9- improving Device hub function which display all connecting devices , but doesn't allow access to nor control or operate it .
10- Support recognize handwriting that support Arabic language & applications that support Arabic handwriting
11 - there are duplicated features in its functions such as backup & sync my settings , Advertising id & IE privacy protection , NOKIA account & email + accounts , Network + & phone settings , about & extras + info , display & brightness function , rate us & feedback function .
12- Enhancing Backup function for SMS Messaging .
13- one of many defects / faults / shortcomings is that when someone want to add a contact phone number , WP 8.1 doesn't let you select your save place or method , whether it was on sim card , SD card , phone memory or your Microsoft account , unfortunately WP save it directly only on your MS account by default .
    Applications improvements :
1- Much bigger support for major & significant applications in all areas and categories .
2- Improving & Enhancing Office document working experience & make preloaded or saved html browsed files can be readable easily .
Office Mobile that's run on WP is extremely primitive , unlike Android office suite Kingsoft Office that include most of desktop office suite features & WP 8.1 Office app still run with a primitive edition that was running on Symbian powered NOKIA mobiles in the early second millennium !
    3- Must support & providing with Google apps & services , such as : Gmail , Google Drive , Translate , Maps , Earth , Youtube , Books , Google Chrome , Cloud Print , Voice , Wallet , Sites , Scholar , Panoramio .
4-  Develop & improve group video calls apps that can send and share various file types plus adding simultaneous group sharing or common group action / work for the same file in the same moment feature. that means you can open a video file for watching while all participants can watch it playing in the same time . Also we can open an app like papyrus and all what we do writing in is shown for all participants in the same time and also they can do writing in and save what they have done. Also, when playing audio file, all participants can listen to it at the same time ( this is completely different from upload and sharing feature and may looks like web conferencing ).
5- Improving & Enhancing Remote Access apps & technologies for Devices & Systems Administration .
    Browser improvements :
1- Adding  Save Page as feature for html webpages that have been saved through G.Chrome in Windows 7 or have been browsed through IE 11 on WP 8.1 .
2- an important functions in IE doesn't exist or discarded , such as home page button & Navigation buttons ( back & forward ) .
    Store Improvements :
1- resolve problem of store restricted download for certain apps that are dedicated to particular region .
2- Install applications from external memory ( SD Card ) without needing to Internet connection .
    Maps Improvements :
Enhancing maps applications by adding ability to add places and landmarks to the map by the user , for example when I go for a trip or a picnic , I pass with someplace or landmark , such as a shopping mall , pharmacy or bookshop , ... etc where I like to add and save such this location data ( Name , info & details ) on map , then find it later through search function on this app like here maps or here drive .
    Wallet Improvements :
WP 8.1 Wallet should be improved to support and accept shop , buy from and payment for various websites and online stores , such as ebay , Amazon & Ali express and not being limited to buy from and pay for Microsoft stores only .
Also , WP 8.1 Wallet became so primitive , because it is not ordered and categorized like previous WP version ( 8 ) , where you can name every card , set its details & infos and let ( allow ) you add various types of payment cards , such as : debit cads , offers : discounts coupons , subscriptions , memberships , prepaid cards , bank accounts ( your online mobile banking service data ) & E- payment accounts like Paypal rather than improve it to accept and support Mastercard paypass , electronic bill payment ( gas, electricity , water , telephone , any purchases ) like a POS machine , however it isn't like this in recent version of WP ( 8.1 ) . All the matter that Wallet takes or sync your raw , primary and so basic data as it is from your account on Microsoft ! and don't let you make any additions , modification or any specific customization .
Display & lock screen Improvements :
1- Make alerts & notifications on lock screen are interactive .
2- there is no news reader function / feature on lock screen like rss feeds .
3- Support wireless screen content sharing : Clone View , Miracast , WiDi ( WiFi Display ) , screen mirroring on large displays for all WP8.1 devices .
    Print & printing improvements :
Support Wireless & Network printing for Office , Pdf , html & picture files or from any readable applications ( such as : news apps , health & fitness apps , some business apps , Education & books + reference apps ) .
    Networks & Connection Improvements:
1- Expand WiFi , Bluetooth profiles & other wireless connecting technologies uses and functionality to include other technologies unlike ( rather than being limited to ) Bluetooth & WiFi , such as : WiFi direct , WiDi , Miracast , …etc .
2- Adding Wi-Fi direct feature for all WP devices to send any files through a Wi-Fi Connection directly.
3- Support wireless connecting to various devices , networking with & access to such as PCs & Printers for files sharing or exchanging , management.
    Hardware improvements :
1- Support recognize handwriting that support Arabic language & applications that support Arabic handwriting.
2- Support memory Card readers and flash USB through mobile's micro USB .
    Security & Protection Improvements :
improve device security and protection against stealing , like making an app for detect the person who enter invalid lock key to open the device .
    ========================================================

    System Improvements :
1- Windows Phone must include a System , folder & files Management app as embedded app rather than an external or independent limited functions app . Also files Explorer or Files Management app should handle all files ( whatever it was ) that are being transfered through Bluetooth and shows save location on the mobile .
    Why? To what end?
You have no business in the main OS file system and due to the way the OS works this is simply not possible.
2- Install applications from external memory ( SD Card ) without needing to Internet connection , as well as doing search in the phone using Bing search button without need for an Internet connection .
Is possible now, download the XAP from the store and copy to SDcard. Internet connection will always be needed to verify regional restrictions and ownership amongst other things.
3- Allow phone book contacts linking to any of Social or communication , dialing or calling apps , such as Line ,
Telegram , KakaoTalk & WhatsApp as an example and not being limited to Skype, Facebook or Linkedin only .
Talk to the respective developers, the OS provided the hooks, they need to implement this.
4- Windows Phone must support running Adobe flash files ( swf & flv ) , Animated GIFs & Java files to be run & play on all WP8 devices .
No modern day mobile OS supports Flash, it was discontinued a long time ago
Not sure why JAVA would be such a big deal.. I can see the huge security issues and would expect it to conflict with OS
5- Fix consuming huge amounts of data on memory by installed apps , the matter that often not found on a PC! .
Not sure what you are getting at here, on your PC you need about three times the application install size as well.
Any app can use the notification centre is the developer supports it, go talk to them. Otherwise this makes no sense to me at all. I have no idea what you are getting at..
7- There is no data connection switching & data speed connection type ( 4,3,2 G ) switching function in WP 8.1 notifications + actions center as well as Alarms function .
Coming in new OS update. Not sure what this has to do with Alarms function
8- Support memory Card readers and flash USB through mobile's micro USB .
Not going to happen due to security issues
9- improving Device hub function which display all connecting devices , but doesn't allow access to nor control or operate it .
If there are supporting apps for said device they will show up here. Again the functionality is there, it's up to developers to implement
10- Support recognize handwriting that support Arabic language & applications that support Arabic handwriting
    Could not care less.
Why/How? you need to save a txt.. copy/paste it to a note ..
13- one of many defects / faults / shortcomings is that when someone want to add a contact phone number , WP 8.1 doesn't let you select your save place or method , whether it was on sim card , SD card , phone memory or your Microsoft account , unfortunately WP save it directly only on your MS account by default .
Nope, when you have multiple accounts the OS will ask which account the contact needs to sync with.
    Applications improvements :
1- Much bigger support for major & significant applications in all areas and categories .
Talk to the developers of said apps
2- Improving & Enhancing Office document working experience & make preloaded or saved html browsed files can be readable easily .
Can't say I have any issues with Office
    3- Must support & providing with Google apps & services , such as : Gmail , Google Drive , Translate , Maps , Earth , Youtube , Books , Google Chrome , Cloud Print , Voice , Wallet , Sites , Scholar , Panoramio .
Talk to Google, they choose to ignore Windows Phone for some reason
4- Develop & improve group video calls apps that can send and share various file types plus adding simultaneous group sharing or common group action / work for the same file in the same moment feature. that means you can open a video file for watching while all participants can watch it playing in the same time . Also we can open an app like papyrus and all what we do writing in is shown for all participants in the same time and also they can do writing in and save what they have done. Also, when playing audio file, all participants can listen to it at the same time ( this is completely different from upload and sharing feature and may looks like web conferencing ).
Again, talk to developers, ther groundwork is actually in the OS.. Take up developing apps and do it yourself. If you think it's a big deal you stand to make a lot of money.
5- Improving & Enhancing Remote Access apps & technologies for Devices & Systems Administration .
No problem accessing anything through SSH or through any of the apps I have to access my PC, my server, my media players or my Xbox..
    Browser improvements :
1- Adding Save Page as feature for html webpages that have been saved through G.Chrome in Windows 7 or have been browsed through IE 11 on WP 8.1 .
This is a phone, not a desktop computer.. Do a screenshot
2- an important functions in IE doesn't exist or discarded , such as home page button & Navigation buttons ( back & forward ) .
Never missed the home button, actually never use it on my PC as well.. as far as back/forward goes try the back button (forward makes little sense to me anyway
    Store Improvements :
1- resolve problem of store restricted download for certain apps that are dedicated to particular region .
Talk to the developers, they set these limits when publishingthe app(s)
2- Install applications from external memory ( SD Card ) without needing to Internet connection .
See the earlier mention of this one
    Maps Improvements :
Enhancing maps applications by adding ability to add places and landmarks to the map by the user , for example when I go for a trip or a picnic , I pass with someplace or landmark , such as a shopping mall , pharmacy or bookshop , ... etc where I like to add and save such this location data ( Name , info & details ) on map , then find it later through search function on this app like here maps or here drive .
Tap/hold then save as favourite. Been there like forever
    Wallet Improvements :
WP 8.1 Wallet should be improved to support and accept shop , buy from and payment for various websites and
online stores , such as ebay , Amazon & Ali express and not being limited to buy from and pay for Microsoft stores only .
Up to stores/developers/shops/banks to support. The option is there and built in.
Display & lock screen Improvements :
1- Make alerts & notifications on lock screen are interactive .
    It's a lockscreen for a reason
2- there is no news reader function / feature on lock screen like rss feeds .
    See above
3- Support wireless screen content sharing : Clone View , Miracast , WiDi ( WiFi Display ) , screen mirroring on large displays for all WP8.1 devices .
Depends on hardware, available where supported.
    Print & printing improvements :
Support Wireless & Network printing for Office , Pdf , html & picture files or from any readable applications ( such as : news apps , health & fitness apps , some business apps , Education & books + reference apps ) .
several apps in store for this
    Networks & Connection Improvements:
1- Expand WiFi , Bluetooth profiles & other wireless connecting technologies uses and functionality to include other technologies unlike ( rather than being limited to ) Bluetooth & WiFi , such as : WiFi direct , WiDi , Miracast , …etc .
Not sure what you are getting at here. IMO technologies should be used for what they are intended, not whatever side effects/hacks ppl made up oever time or at at time when there were no real options. Actually Bluetooth internet sharing is coming in the next update.
2- Adding Wi-Fi direct feature for all WP devices to send any files through a Wi-Fi Connection directly.
    For what purpose?
3- Support wireless connecting to various devices , networking with & access to such as PCs & Printers for files sharing or exchanging , management.
My files are on Onedrive and available anywhere anyway.. no need for this
    Hardware improvements :
1- Support recognize handwriting that support Arabic language & applications that support Arabic handwriting.
2- Support memory Card readers and flash USB through mobile's micro USB .
mentioned earlier, if you say so
    Security & Protection Improvements :
improve device security and protection against stealing , like making an app for detect the person who enter invalid lock key to open the device .
Not sure how you see this.. once I take the SIM out and reset the link to you is gone

  • ThinkPad W530 Review

Just wanted to give a heads up about a review of the W530 that's written by a user who owns the W520, so it's heavy on comparisons which is kind of helpful if you're familiar with that machine.  I'll quote the whole review below sans all the images to prevent bandwidth warnings!   Also truncated and removed some sections to get under the 20,000 character count limit Full review with images is here: http://www.laptopreviews.com/lenovo-thinkpad-w530-review-2012-07
Just like last calendar year, Lenovo is ahead of Dell and HP in releasing a workstation equipped with the latest and greatest Intel Core processors and nVidia Kepler professional graphics. Starting at $1,299 on Lenovo.com (which is the same starting price as the W520 when it was introduced), the Lenovo Thinkpad W530 can be configured with processors ranging from the Intel Core i5-3320M to i7-3610QM to the top-end i7-3290XM, supports up to 32GB RAM and 270 nit 95% color gamut FHD display for demanding business customers. The W530 is like the W520 in many ways as a professional workstation laptop.
The Thinkpad W530 under review comes with the following specs:
    Processor: Intel Core i7-3520M (2.9GHz, TurboBoost to 3.6GHz, 4MB L3 cache)
    Graphics: nVidia Quadro K1000M
    Memory: 8GB RAM DDR3-1600MHz
    Display: 15.6” 1600 x 900 resolution, matte finish
    OS: Windows 7 Professional
    Storage: 500GB 7200RPM
    Battery: 6-cell Li-Ion, 57Whr
    Wireless: Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205
Ports: Gigabit Ethernet, VGA, mini-DisplayPort, powered USB 2.0, USB 2.0, USB 3.0 (x2), combination headphone/microphone jack, ExpressCard slot (34mm), SDHC reader, 1394
    Weight: 5.95lbs (2.7kg)
    Keyboard
Let’s just start off with the most obvious change. The new keyboard is the most radical change in the ThinkPad line since…forever, really. Up until now, the ThinkPad series has had the same keyboard style since introduction, with minor changes here and there. Replacing the traditional 7-row ThinkPad keyboard is the island-style 6-row keyboard, found on the whole range of ThinkPad's, from the 12” X230 all the way up to this 15.6” workstation.  Even with the changes, the surface of each key has stayed the same during the transition (1.5cm by 1.5cm for the alphanumeric keys) as well as the spacing between each key (roughly 0.4cm). Other keys, such as Caps Lock, Enter, Shift, Backspace, etc., have stayed the same size as well, though the Caps Lock key no longer has an indicator light. Notable differences include shape changes in the Esc key, Delete key, moving the power button from top-center to top-right, and the lack of a dedicated Menu key.  However, the most important changes in key layout are as follows:
The layout of the “special keys” (Delete, Home, End, PgUp and PgDn) has been dramatically rearranged on the new keyboard
The dedicated Forward/Back buttons are now gone.  These buttons used to be located to the right/left of the Up Arrow key and are now replaced with the PgUp/PgDn keys
The Print Screen button is now located where the Menu button should be.
The Scroll Lock and Pause buttons have disappeared, though they have been relegated to near-oblivion in today’s world
And just for change’s sake (as far as I know), Lenovo decided to paint the Enter key black instead of the traditional ThinkPad blue and the Windows key is bigger on the W530 than the W520 (1.5cm squared vs. 1cm squared).
To those coming from an older ThinkPad, the newer keyboards are either something to love or something to hate. The older keyboard in previous generations were renowned for their quality and keyboard feel (certainly, they were one of the best laptop keyboard on the market) and is so popular that it has an almost religious following among ThinkPad users. On the flip side, the newer keyboard has a lot to prove to the ThinkPad community. While the common-used alphanumeric keys have the same area and spacing as the old keyboard and the typing quality on it is above average (compared to other island-style keyboards), Lenovo’s choice to move and kill off some special function keys fly in the face of what most ThinkPad users would want. I love using the Forward/Back buttons while browsing the internet and using Windows Explorer, for example, but with the current and likely future ThinkPad's killing those buttons off, I will miss being able to navigate with just my right pinkie. The choice to move the Print Screen button to the bottom of the keyboard just baffles me, period. It would have been nice if Lenovo had kept the 7-row layout while designing the new keyboard and if the keys had stayed in pretty much the same positions during the change (for example, “special keys” staying in the top-right, bringing back the Forward/Back buttons), I wouldn’t make too much fuss over the new style even though I personally prefer traditional keyboards. At least the Fn button stays in the bottom-left corner, an odd quirk that’s been featured on ThinkPad's for as long as I can remember.
    Build and Design
Just like the W520 before it, the newer W530 is a tough machine, built well and meant to last. The outside casing of the laptop is made using ABS plastic, while the inside contains an internal rollcage to protect internal electronics in case of a drop or other accident. It also makes the laptop all but impossible to flex (there’s maybe a millimeter or two of flex when twisting the display). There is a keyboard draining system that will protect the laptop in the event of a small liquid spill onto the keyboard as well. Sturdy, metal hinges attach the display to the body of the W530, and they are firm enough to hold any angle they are set up despite any typical vibrations or other movements, and if the W520 is any indicator, they will stay firm for years to come.
As I’ve mentioned in my Thinkpad W520 review, Lenovo’s business laptops are certainly capable of withstanding a few drops onto the floor. Even with repeated drops, having the power brick fall onto the palm rest from several feet above, and traveling with the notebook unprotected in a backpack for just over a year, I’m sure that the W530 will be able to survive prolonged abuse for years to come.
One thing to note about the W530 (and workstation laptops in general) is the power brick. The version with the K1000M GPU comes with the 135W power adaptor and it’s just slightly smaller and lighter than an actual brick of the clay variety, coming in at 6in by 2.5in by 1.4in and 1.83lbs. Those considering buying a W530 with the K2000M will receive the 170W power adaptor (like my W520), which measures 6.5in by 3in by 1.4in and actually weighs less (1.7lbs) oddly enough.
    Display
While the review unit came with a 900p, 220 nit HD+ display, the W530 is also available with a 768p 220 nit display (which I recommend against; 768p needs to stay in netbooks and bargain-bin laptops, not workstations) and a 1080p, 95% color gamut, 270 nit FHD display. Depending on the configuration options, either the 768p is the default and the 900p is a $50 upgrade, or the 900p is the default; the 1080p display is a $250 option, though after owning a W520 with said display, I highly recommend it if it’s in the budget. Both the W520 and W530 use the same model displays.
With the 1080p display to the left and 900p display to the right, the 50 nit difference shows. Compared to the HD+ display, the FHD appears to be noticeably brighter (though in photos, it shows as being more white-washed, though this is due to the camera and not the displays). Colors on the 95% gamut FHD are also more saturated than the HD+ display, though the HD+ display still has colors that pop out well. Black reproduction on either display is good, with both being very dark. Being TN panels, viewing angles on either is just average, though better than on glossy display found in most consumer laptops. Tilt either screen back far enough (they go just past 180 degrees) and colors turn into shades of black or extremely darker versions.
    Sound
This is where the W530 makes the W520 look shameful. Owners of the W520 workstation laptop would either have to use an external speaker set, headphones, or have to perform modifications in order to have a laptop that sounds half-way decent. The W520 speakers were low volume (even when at 100%), had no depth, and would sound tinny when playing near 100% and/or playing high-pitch noises.
In contrast, the W530 actually sounds amazing. In my review of the Thinkpad W520, I contrasted the W520 to a Dell XPS 15 with JBL speakers, concluding that the only way to get good sound from a W520 was to use a different sound solution from the internal speakers. However, I feel that the W530 can compete with media center laptops in terms of audio performance, a major plus over the previous generation Lenovo workstation. This is in thanks to different audio drivers (the W520 uses the Conexant 20672 SmartAudio HD drivers, and the W530 uses Realtek High Definition Audio) and Lenovo’s inclusion of Dolby Home Theater v4 software, which I went into detail about in the Ideapad U310 review. In a nutshell, this software includes a few factory-shipped sound profiles and settings appropriate for different usage scenarios, which allow a user to enhance voice quality (in the Movie profile) or to enjoy rich sound when listening to music (in the Music profile and various settings). While the W520 was tinny and lacked bass, the W530 can reproduce sounds from any pitch found in music and gives great bass for a laptop lacking a subwoofer.
    Software
Unlike the previous W520, Lenovo’s ThinkPad W530 comes with a bit of bloatware out of the box. Of course, there is the typical trial AV software, Intel WiDi, and Microsoft Office Starter 2010, though this is to be expected in pretty much any laptop bought today. Also included is a trial of Nitro Pro 7, a PDF editing suite, and Corel DVD MovieFactory (Lenovo Edition). Lenovo also includes a cloud storage solution called “Lenovo Cloud Storage by SugarSync”. Skype is also included on the W530 and with the integrated camera, the video coming from the W530 user looks clear and colorful.
Lenovo also includes some excellent software as well. My personal favorite is the Lenovo Power Manager 6, which is like the default Windows power manager on steroids. A user can change system settings (CPU deep sleep, display brightness, ODD power, etc.), idle timers (when to stop the HDD, dimmed display brightness, standby and hibernation), advanced settings (allow/disallow hybrid sleep and wake timers, power management for PCIe, USB, CPU, and system cooling), events and alarms. By default, it comes with six power profiles (Power Source Optimized, Max. Performance, Max. Battery Life, Video Playback, Energy Saver (which actually drains more power than Max. Battery Life, oddly), and Timers off (for when a user wants to use the W530 in a presentation).
The best I can describe Lenovo SimpleTap as being is a Metro-like interface on top of Windows 7; either launching it from the Start menu or the blue ThinkVantage button on the keyboard will activate it, resulting in the traditional Windows desktop being replaced with a Metro-style tile system and a toolbar on the top-right corner. The user can always exit out of this interface by either pressing the Escape key or clicking on the SimpleTap background. The included Thinkpad-branded fingerprint software is also excellent, allowing for a simpler and more secure way to log into Windows; I use it exclusively on my personal W520, though there is a setting to allow a user to log in with a password en lieu of a fingerprint. Last but not least is the ThinkVantage Tools suite, which includes the above ThinkPad applications, plus: Password Vault, Update and Drivers, Airbag Protection (an active protection system for the HDD), Factory Recovery Disks, Messages from Lenovo, Enhanced Backup and Restore, Internet Connections System Health and Diagnostics, and Web Conferencing.
In the case of a fresh Windows install, a user can always download the Thinkpad-branded software from Lenovo’s website. If anything, I recommend keeping the Power Manager software.
    Battery Life
Not using Power Manager’s Battery Stretch, the Lenovo Thinkpad W530 was able to last six hours and 46 minutes while having the display brightness set to 5 out of 15 and only using the Intel GPU (Optimus disabled). The 6-cell battery was also able to last five hours and 25 minutes under those same conditions, but also included a 45 minute YouTube video. Using the same settings, but running solely on the K1000M, the W520 manages a battery life of three hours and 52 minutes.
Out of curiosity, I tried installing my W520’s 9-cell battery into the W530, and while it fitted correctly, there were some issues. If a user tries booting with the older battery, the W530 will stop booting and display the following message:
The battery installed is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the correct Lenovo battery for this system. Press the ESC key to continue.
What that means is that even if the W530 is plugged into its charger, the laptop will still not recharge the battery. This is because the older batteries lack an authentication chip inside of them (found in OEM batteries in the -30 series of Thinkpads). A user can still use an older battery with the system, but will have to find some other means to charge up other than the W530.
    User Upgradability
If you know how to use a screwdriver, you can upgrade the W530 yourself with aftermarket parts. Lenovo, in a way, even encourages this by publishing their service manuals online. To access RAM slots 3 and 4 and to access the hard drive bay, all that’s needed is to remove the only two doors on the underside of the laptop, three screws total. This ThinkPad ships with a Hitachi Z7K500 500GB 7200RPM hard drive and no RAM in the last two slots (out of a total of four slots, allowing 32GB of RAM maximum).
To gain access to the rest of the components, there are two additional screws located on the bottom that must be undone. One is located right next to the RAM module door (towards the front edge of the laptop) and the other is located within the RAM module area itself. When these are gone, all one needs to do to remove the keyboard is to slide it towards the display, lift from the bottom edge near the trackpad, and carefully move towards the trackpad. First thing I noticed was that the size, shape, and connector is the same for both the W530’s keyboard and W520’s keyboard, so it might be possible to put an traditional ThinkPad keyboard into this Ivy Bridge system. However, there are additional keys on the W520’s keyboard that are not found on the W530 (Screen Lock, Forward/Back keys, etc.) and the BIOS probably would not know how to handle those extra keys. Anyway, Lenovo ships out this particular system with two sticks of generic Samsung memory (4GB each), an Intel 6205 WiFi card, and a slot for either a WWAN card or mSATA SSD (only one can be installed at a time). If an end user must have both, they could install the mSATA SSD and use an ExpressCard 3G cellular data card externally.
    Conclusion
Like its predecessor, the W530 is a functional workstation laptop that’s first out of the gate with an array of Ivy Bridge processors to choose from. It can pack up to an Extreme Edition i7-3920XM, nVidia Quadro K2000 GPU, 32GB of RAM, 1080p display, and up to three system drives -- mSATA SSD, primary HDD bay, and another drive if you replace the optical bay with an Ultrabay HDD caddy.  While not equipped with the more expensive options, our review unit is certainly a great workstation that will serve a professional well in any CUDA-based work (CAD, video or photo editing, graphics design, etc.). The most noticeable change between the W520 and W530 is the keyboard, and for a lot of potential buyers it will be a love it or hate it situation. For those buying into the ThinkPad line for the first time, it may not bother you too much. Those who are long-time ThinkPad users (such as myself) will probably be disappointed in the direction Lenovo has gone with the new design, but ignoring the odd arrangement of non-alphanumeric keys the new ThinkPad keyboard is actually a joy to type on. The curved keys fit well around the fingers, just like the old keyboard, and since the spacing between keys are the same it shouldn’t feel too different for those upgrading to a newer ThinkPad.
If history is any indicator, the ThinkPad W530 should not only be the first Ivy Bridge mobile workstation, but will also be the lightest of the bunch as well (the W520 was 5.95lbs, Dell’s Precision M4600 was around 6lbs, and HP’s Elitebook 8650w started at 6.5lbs). My only objective complaint about the W530 (ignoring the keyboard) is that Lenovo did not introduce an option for users to purchase one with a FirePro professional GPU (Quadro’s competition), found in workstations offered by Dell and HP. For those that do not need CUDA, it would have been a great, cost-effective solution while still staying with the legendary ThinkPad line.
    Pros
    Business-quality durability
    Multiple storage drive options
Over 6.5 hours of battery life
    IBM warranty support
Vastly improved sound quality (compared to the W520)
    Cons
No Forward/Back keys, other missing keys
Cannot use previous-generation Lenovo OEM batteries

I think no one "normally" working will use touch specific elements of Win8! Metro is one part of Win8, but i think normal desktop mode will be preferred by 99 %  of the users.
With the new upcoming Microsoft Surface, touch might work well, but i just don't see myself touching my laptop's screen.

  • W500 Windows 7 64 Bit Upgrade Misery :(

My work required that I upgrade to a 64 bit Windows 7.  My W500 was from 9/09.  Never had any issues with it but needed to upgrade.
Holy 2 days of hell.  Upgraded to Windows 7 and have had nothing but nightmares.
Is there a "smooth" path to install Windows 7 64 bit on a W500 from a couple years ago?
Almost every program I try to install, the installer hangs...  Every restart ends with a system hang.  Any suggestions will be incredibly appreciated.

I can second the conclusion that, when installing and updating all the Lenovo drivers and programs for the first time after a bare Windows 7 installation or a factory image restore, it's best to download and install all the the drivers and programs manually, starting with the bios update, the basic chipset and hardware drivers. The System Update program does not seem to get everything installed correctly in the case of such a massive initial update.
The "Driver Matrix" pages for your particular Lenovo machine on the Lenovo Support web site make the downloading reasonably efficient. (Don't forget the "Windows 7 Thinkvantage Experience" package (or whatever it's called), as well as the latest version of Lenovo Enhanced Backup and Restore).
There are some sequencing isssues, meaning that some things have to be installed before others--be prepared to download and read the text notice that accompanies each component to get this sequencing right. (I think this is where the System Update program falls over.) Disable Windows Update while you are doing this! You'll be rebooting the machine a million times, but do it each time an installer want to do it.
Some sequencing tips are given on Lenovo Support's advice for Windows 7 Clean Installation.
Once you've done that, System Update will function quite nicely to pick up future updates.
The final steps are to reenable Windows Update, check for and install all relevant Windows updates, including the optional Windows 7 system stability and program compatibility updates.
If you choose, now install all your major software packages (office suites, etc.) and update them to the most recent level. Verify that everything works.
Oh, once you've done all this labour, use Lenovo "Enhanced Backup & Restore" to create a set of DVD restore discs with the full image of the system you have just spent so much time creating! If you are as crazy as I am, you will then use those same discs immediately to zap your current system drive and verify that the backup discs really do work. Then I make the first "baseline" backup to my external USB drive, and go through the same zap & restore routine. (As I said, I am crazy...)
Realistically, this belt+suspenders approach will take a whole afternoon, but you only have to do it once, and you are then certain that if your pants do fall down, you can quickly put on a new pair...

  • Edge S430 recovery is broken - what do?

    Hello there.
I've had my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge S430-3EG for about a year now. It runs windows 7 64bit. Now i decided to reformat it.
I made some mistakes along the way, and now my recovery program won't work. I'll start from the beginning.
I used the recovery partition (Q, a separate 16gb SSD drive) to create a startup disc from within windows. It asked if it should create data discs, but I declined. Then I went about and started the recovery program via F11 in the boot menu. I asked the program to do a full factory reset. After it had started the resetting, it asked me for 'Applications and driver disc 1' which I didn't have. I assume it's those data discs I didn't have...
I tried to reboot my computer, but windows wouldn't start up, leaving me stuck - it would just keep displaying the boot menu where you choose which drive to boot on. I went on to install another version of windows 7 64bit, hoping that I would be able to create the discs and recover my Lenovo version of windows.
Alas, the recovery (Q) drive is gone from view in 'My Computer'. Also, the F11 function I the boot menu doesn't work anymore - it just does nothing and continues to boot into windows.
I downloaded the 'Enhanced backup and restore' program and created a recovery-disc. It boots the recovery program up nicely, but when I want to do the actual recovery, it gives me an error message stating "Product recovery function has been removed from this system".
This is where I am stuck now. What to do?
I still can't see the Q drive in 'My Computer', but it is visible in the device manager. Also, I'm still presented with the option to boot from the drive in the boot menu, although nothing happens when I try it. So the disc is still working, but the recovery function seems to be lost.
Any clues as to how I might solve this issue?
    Yours,
    Jimmi Mathisen, Denmark

    Hi Jimmi,
sorry you haven't got a solution before now.  Seeing as you are in the EMEA area you can order a set of recovery discs through the following website.  There will be a charge which I believe is not too painfull.

  • X220 out of space on recovery drive

I am getting an error message that I am "out of space" on the Lenovo recovery drive.  What do I do?  Where do I find information about the recovery drive?

    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Enhanced-Backup-How-to-change-defined-space-li...
Are your backups going on there?  You can either delete some older backups or increase the space for backups.
You can also put backups on an external hard drive.

  • Anyone tried DB2 9.5 yet?

    Hi,
I'm in the process of upgrading ~15 systems from DB2 8.2 to DB2 9. Iäm planning to go to 9.5.
Is there any cons to do that instead of the somewhat more tested 9.1?
    BR Morten

    Also,
Check this note 1089578, it contains the new functions that db2 9.5 has. So although I don't know the cons, here are the pro's:
    Taken from the note:
"Overview of New Functions and Their Use with SAP Software:
Enhanced Row Compression by Automatic Dictionary Creation (ADC)
Simplified Memory Configuration by Multithreaded Architecture
    Simplified Storage Management
    Enhanced High Availability (HA)
    Enhancements for multipartitioned databases
    Improved Work Load Management (WLM)
    Enhancements for MDC
Enhanced Backup using Integrated Flash Copy
    Automatic Backup/Log Retention Management
    Real Time Statistics (RTS)
    Enhanced Data Redistribution
It goes in a little more detail in the note.

  • Firefox 29 is no longer automatically creating bookmarks backups.

I hate to be posting another question having finally (I believe) finding a work around for the "Firefox 29 fails to exit properly and remains running in task manager" problem.
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/997670
However, in Firefox 28 FF would automatically create a new bookmarks backup upon first opening of each day and the number of bookmark backups could be set in about:config setting:
    browser.bookmarks.max_backups
Since installing Firefox 29 this functionality does not appear to be working. Is this by design or another "issue"? Has anyone else noticed this issue?
Please don't ask me to "reset to default state", "run in safe mode", etc. I just went through all that with the above "Failing to exit properly" thread. I know I can manually backup bookmarks. I would like to know whether this is by design, if other people have noticed this, or I am the only one experiencing this.

    Kind Regards,
    Axis

This is a bit of a "bump" with some new things I have tried. I have run the Places Maintenance add-on (again) and places.sqlite integrity seems absolutely fine.
    Places Maintenance: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
    I have re-installed FF 29.
I am able to create manually, and restore, bookmark backups without a hitch.
I did delete places.sqlite and restarted FF 29. The only thing I lost was all my bookmark Icons. So I re-added the former places.sqlite. Of course, I would have to wait until tomorrow morning to know for sure, but since the Places Maintenance add-on indicated no problems, and since I can manually create them, I am quite sure it is not a corrupted places.sqlite file.
I tried what may be a dubious add-on, BackupFox, and it failed to create a new backup but left a temp file in the main profile folder.
Logic tells me that if I can manually create and restore bookmark backups, then something in the engine(?) may be responsible but I do not know enough to go further with that. Permissions must be O.K. or I wouldn't be able to make (manually) a backup.
I did not have this problem at all with FF 28. Rather, I was asking cor-el how to limit the number of backups, which he showed me. What makes this difficult to test is that I would have to wait until the first opening of FF each day to tell.
I can't tell if this problem is "only me" or affecting others, however, (no insult intended) I can paste into the support.mozilla.org page search box the exact title of this thread and not find it. I shows up number 1 on Google doing similar search. People who aren't checking their profile folder each day might not even be noticing this.
cor-el, or anybody, have you found auto backups have stopped in FF 29 for you? Anyone who reads this please let me know if your bookmark auto-backup is working. Just peak in your profile and see if you have a new one each day.
Does anyone know just what .dll or .exe or what actually is triggered how that causes the auto-backup to occur? Is it the maintenance service?
What I have not tried is creating another profile because this one seems just fine and I has always worked before 29, and still does work, as far as profiles go. I need to know what "triggers" auto bookmark backup and I doubt it is my profile.
    Regards again,
    Axis

  • I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Mac

I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Machine, there are only about 5 backups recorded on the ext. hard drive. There were many more before. Any idea what happened and if I have to buy a new back up hard drive?

    Hallo  Kieth ,
I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles, descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .
Thanks for your interest and advice.
    regards  - Alan

@Markus: thanks for the hint with the quote-formatting option!
    Concerning the issue:
Sorry, but you misunderstood the way how the general BACKINT for Oracle interface is used with MaxDB.
See, MaxDB comes with a own BACKINT executable.
This is a enhanced BACKINT tools that allows pipes as data input channels - which is not supported by the Backint for Oracle.
The MaxDB Backint serves as a adapter program between the MaxDB Kernel and the backint for Oracle program.
    So instead of
    BACKINT:     D:\usr\sap\SCD\SYS\exe\uc\NTAMD64\backint.exe
you should point it to the MaxDB provided adapater program.
I propose to revisit the documentation on that topic [Connecting to a Backint for Oracle Interface |http://maxdb.sap.com/doc/7_7/45/746a5712e14022e10000000a1553f6/content.htm].

  • ACS 5.3.0.40 On-demand Full Backup failed.

    Hi,
I have ACS 5.3.0.40 Primary Secondary Authenticators , of which the Scheduled backup has stopped.
    When checked the :
    Monitoring Configuration >
    System Operations >
    Data Management >
    Removal and Backup
    > Incremental Backup , it had changed to OFF mode. without any reason.
The same was observed earlier too.
    I have made the
Incremental Backup to ON and intiated the
View Full Database Backup Now. But it wasn't successful and reported an Error:
FullBackupOnDemand-Job Incremental Backup Utility System Fri Dec 28 11:56:57 IST 2012 Incremental Backup Failed: CARS_APP_BACKUP_FAILED : -404 : Application backup error Failed
Later i did the acs stop/start  "view-jobmanager" and  initiated the On-demand Full Backup , but no luck, same error reported this time too.
Has any one faced similar type of error /problem reported , please let me know the solution.
    Thanks & Regards.

One other thing; if this does end up being an issue with disk space it is worth considering patch 5.3.0.40.6 or later since improves database management processes
This cumulative patch includes fixes/enhancements related to disk management to avoid following issue
CSCtz24314: ACS 5.x *still* runs out of disk space
    and also fix for
CSCua51804: View backup fails   even when there is space in disk
Following is taken from the readme for this patch
The Monitoring and Reporting database can increase when as records are collected. There are two mechanisms to reduce this size and prevent it from exceeding the maximum limit.
    1. Purge: In this mechanism the data will be purged based on the configured data retention period or upon reaching the upper limit of the database.
    2. Compress: This mechanism frees up unused space in the database without deleting any records.
Previously the compress option could only be run manually. In ACS 5.3 Patch 6 there are enhancements so it will run daily at a predefined time, automatically when specific criteria are met. Similarly by default purge job runs every day at 4 AM. In Patch 6 new option provided to do on demand purge as well.
The new solution is to perform the Monitoring and Reporting database compress automatically.
    2.       New GUI option is provided to enable the Monitoring and Reporting database compress to run on every day at 5 AM. This can be configured under GUI Monitoring And Configuration -> System Operations -> Data Management -> Removal and Backup
    3.       Changed the upper and lower limit of purging of Monitoring and Reporting data. This is to make sure at lower limit itself ACS has enough space to take the backup. The maximum size allocated for monitoring and reporting database is 42% of /opt( 139 GB). The lower Limit at which ACS purges the data by taking the backup is 60% of maximum size Monitoring and Reporting database (83.42 GB). The upper limit at which ACS purges the data without taking backup is 80% of maximum size Monitoring and Reporting database (111.22 GB).
    4. The acsview-database compress operation stops all services till 5.3 patch 5 , now only Monitoring and Reporting related services are stopped during this operation.
    5. Provided “On demand purge” option in Monitoring and Reporting GUI. This option will not try to take any backup, it will purge the data based on window size configured.
    6. Even if the “Enable ACS View Database compress” option is not enabled in GUI then also automatic view database compress will be triggered if the physical size of Monitoring and Reporting database reached to the upper limit of its size.
    7. This automatic database compress takes place only when the “LogRecovery” feature is enabled, this is to make sure that the logging which happens during this operation will be recovered once this operation is completed. ACS generates alert when there is a need to do automatic database compress and also to enable this feature.
    8. Before enabling “LogRecovery” feature configure the Logging Categories in such way that only mandatory data to log into Local Log Target and Remote Log Target as Log collector under System Administration > ... > Configuration > Log Configuration
This “LogRecovery” feature can recover the logs only if the logs are present under local log target.
9       This automatic database compress operation also performed only when the difference between actual and physical size of Monitoring and Reporting database size is > 50GB.
10 The new CLI “acsview” with option “show-dbsize” is provided to show the actual and physical size of the Monitoring and Reporting database. This is available in “acs-config” mode.
acsview     show-dbsize     Show the actual and physical size of View DB and transaction log file

  • Can't get new backup past the starting gate

After fouling up my first backup since upgrading to Snow Leopard (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12245539#12245539), I've reset TM (twice) and reformatted my backup drive (with a single pass of zeroes). But, I cannot get the backup to proceed beyond either about 40 or 400 MB out of 105 GB. Last night, it quickly got to about 382 MB and then sat there for over 5 hours and 30 minutes with absolutely no additional progress. That was my first attempt after reformatting the backup drive. Not being real sure that I had reset TM (deleting the plist file from root/library/preferences), I did that tonight, deleted the backupsdb folder on the backup drive (I don't think I emptied the trash, however) and tried again. This time it stopped at 39 MB for 45 minutes before I told it to stop. It's still trying to stop now. I'm going to have to go to the Activity Manager again to stop it and then I'll be unable to eject the backup drive. I'll have to shutdown and then the computer won't completely shutdown. I'll have to force it.
Any idea what's going wrong here?

Now the question is: What is the issue with eSATA and TM?
TM backups to an external HD via eSata are not supported: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
Why is a mystery -- perhaps they just didn't think of it.
