Enhanced dictation

What is enhanced dictation used for?

Hello Sybarian,
Thank you for the question.  If you select Enhanced Dictation, your Mac converts words to text without sending the information to Apple:
Use Enhanced Dictation
If you use Enhanced Dictation, also known as “Mac-based Dictation,” your Mac converts your words to text without sending any information to Apple. If you select this option, you’re prompted to download the language data your Mac needs for voice recognition. Your text appears as you speak, and you can use the keyboard, mouse, or trackpad to edit as you go.
If you don’t use Enhanced Dictation, your words are sent to Apple servers to be analyzed, helping your Mac understand what you’re saying. This method, also known as “server-based Dictation,” takes advantage of the latest language data.

  • Enhanced dictation does not work.  I've tried everything. Any help?

Hello everybody. After downloading enhanced dictation (spanish-spain), the microphone seems to be Ok but no word is written. Regular online dictation works well. I use a mac-mini i7 16Gb and a micro connected to an external audio card firewire. I've tried to delete and download again several times, to clean the cache, turn on-off with resets,.. but nothing seems to fix the problem. Dictation is important for me to work and I'd like to try with enhanced dictation because I've read that it improves the performance with respect to online dictation.
I've empoyed such a lot of time looking for a solution in the support community and other forums but nothing worked.
    Could anybody help me.
    Thanks so much in advance

    Ok, I reply to myself.
The problem was caused by the microphone and the firewire connection. Enhanced Dictation is not ready to work with my audio hardware (micro Shure and Presonus audio card via Firewire). Although this audio hardware works fine with other software and even with online dictation, when I use it with Enhanced Dictation, the system seems to be working (the micro bars of the microphone in the screen move ok) but no words are written at all.
The solution was to connect it analogically, using an audio connection between my audio card and the line-in connection of the mac mini (stereo).
Hope Apple will solve this problem. I guess many people probably are having the same problem, mainly people with pro audio cards. I hope that this will help them

  • Copy enhanced dictation file download to a USB drive

My friend has limited internet access, so I downloaded a bootable 10.9 installer to a USB drive to update her iMac.  Where is the enhanced dictation file downloaded to?  Can I copy this to a USB drive and install it as well?  It is just to large of a file for them to dowload, and I'd love to install it on their machine so they can use it as well.  I wish my iPhone could do this as well, despite the large file size.

This contradicts what I have been told by many other people....if the OS is associated with a specific Apple ID, how does, say, a small school or business then install an OS via USB on multiple conmputers when each has it's own unique Apple ID?
I am not that familiar with commercial or volume licensing - you would have to check with Apple. Here is the excerpt from the SLA (in screenshot sections since I couldn't get it all in one) - this is from Apple:
You are allowed to back up your system for your own use; "sharing" a software license has never been allowed that I know of - it is now just a lot more difficult with the Apple ID verification. That (I believe) is Apple's way of assuring that there won't be as much software piracy.
You can read the entire SLA here:

  • Enhanced Dictation does not work.

I bought a cheap microphone, cheapest I could get.  I plugged it into the "Audio In" port of my Mac Mini.  The Mini is running OSX 10.9.4.   I went to the "Dictation & Speech" system preference and turned on Enhanced Dictation.   The Mini automatically downloaded whatever it downloaded.  I turned on the microphone, double-clicked the "Function" key twice, and got no response in text boxes in either Word or Safari.
I went back to "Dictation & Speech" and changed the input from "Automatic" to "Line In."   When I double-clicked "Function," I got the icon of the old-fashioned microphone.  I talked, but neither Word nor Safari responded.
    I deleted ~Library/Caches/com.apple.SpeechRecognitionCore/Users/en_GB.
Two days later, I have tried again.  Today I opened "Dictation & Speech" and re-set everything to turn on.  The Mini downloaded whatever it downloads, and, again, I get no response from my dictating.
In fact, now the "Start Dictation" tool in the Edit menu is dimmed.   Neither that tool nor the Function key can get Enhanced Dictation to work.
    Help!

Test the microphone in the Sound preference pane.

  • Enhanced dictation 10.9.4 Not working

Enhanced dictation 10.9.4 stopped working after two days. Just installed this OS update. Regular works, but not offline. Tried restarting, turning on/off--nothing works.
Ideas, or is it just a buggy, useless program?

What model is your Mac? It needs to be from 2011 or later. Go to About This Mac then select 'more info' if unsure. If your hardware is too old you can use a 3rd party program like Airparrot.
Bear in mind, DVD's are blocked from mirroring due to copyright so it's best to connect a DVD player if that's your only intended purpose.

enhanced dictation shuts down other audio sources. So I cannot transcribe voice memos or listen to music as I type.  this is a 6 y.o. IMac.  4 GB RAM.  any idea why?

  • Enhanced dictation muting sound

Enhanced dictation mutes the sound when it's on. Is there any way to keep the audio playing while dictating so that I can listen in my headphones and dictate what I hear? I am transcribing interviews.

  • I can't get enhanced dictation to work

It only works when I let the Apple servers interpret. When I check the "enchanced dication" box, it doesn't work. I double tap on the Fn key, speak, and it comes out blank. No words. Is there a reason why I can't get enhanced dictation to work?

Enhanced Dictation requires a substantial additional download.  The first time you try to use it, you must be connected to the internet.
    See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5449
I guess I should have mentioned it worked before the most recent update. 10.9.0 and 10.9.1 it worked, but since the 10.9.2 update it stopped working.

  • HT5449 Enhanced Dictation Error: Capitalizes word after a comma.

Enhanced dictation is not as accurate as dictation.  The MOST annoying issue for me, is that it often capitalizes the word after a comma!  I do not know how this is possible since this is a simple grammatical rule.  Sentences do not end with commas.
There are other problems, but if this could be fixed would make the system far more useable.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Error downloading the english language for enhanced dictation.

I'm trying to setup for enhanced dictation and I keep getting the following error message:
"an unexpected error happened while downloading the dictation language "english" (United States) try again."
Can anyone please tell me what's the problem?

Yes, it is an almost 1 GB file download and takes a while.
And, since it is a file from Apple and not available as a "stand-alone third party" download, I doubt very seriously that it could be shared from a Google drive; most likely that would not be legal as any software downloads from Apple can only be obtained legally directly from Apple.
I read that turning off Spotlight helps (I did not do that).
I just found this older discussion searching here for you:
can't download the Enhanced Dictation Engine
Have you tried all of those steps?
(Note: I did not have to restart the computer for it to work on mine)

  • Enhanced dictation doesn't work

    Enahnced dictation doesn't work.
I've downlaoded and installed the files.
Press Fn twice lanches the mic, which blinks according to my voice.
When I press Fn to end the dication, no text is keyed-in.
However, normal dictation —i.e. done remotely by Apple— works fine.
I've tried the solution mentionned in this thread http://discussions.apple.com/message/23513414#23513414, to no avail.
    I've opened a bug ticket at http://bugreport.apple.com
    Any solution?

I had this problem too (and it may come up again...)
    1. Just toggling off dictation and enhanced dictation and then toggling on again worked, no restart required.
    so that was easy enough
    2. I had Speakable Items on and wondered if they were conflicting as every time I hit the dictation key the speakable items badge appears. But I tested with Speakable Items off and on and Enhanced Dictation still worked.
Now I'm trying to compensate my manner of speaking to the way I write!

  • How to install/enable Enhanced Dictation automatically?

Mavericks has a new version of the Dictation feature previously available in Mountain Lion. In Mountain Lion it only worked by (like the iPhone) sending speech to Apple's servers to be processed and therefore required a live Internet connection. Mavericks supports this same mode still, but also now offers an 'Enhanced Dictation' mode where the processing is done locally on the Mac itself and therefore does not require a live Internet connection.
The normal way to enable this Enhanced Dictation mode is to open System Preferences, click on Dictation & Speech and tick the options to turn on Dictation and Use Enhanced Dictation. This will trigger a download and installation of the required software. However as should be obvious this requires manually intervention to do this. If one is wanting to build a number of Macs with this feature enabled this rapidly becomes tedious in the extreme.
Is there anyway to manually download an installer which can be run on Macs to do this? If not is there a way to write a preference e.g. defaults write which would trigger this automtically? Either approach could then be incorporated in an imaging process like DeployStudio.

I don't have a Mavericks machine handy right now (I am currently at home) but the following information should help you.
First the link I provided is for the UK language version, there will be different but presumably similar links for other locations, e.g. USA, Australia, etc. You will need to do the samething I did to find the right link for you I am afraid which is run a packet capture to spot the URL System Preferences starts to download, I would guess most or all will contain SpeechRecognitionCoreLanguage but searching for http://swcdn.apple.com would be another option.
Second, your right, after installing it you also need to set via defaults some preferences. Again not having access to a Mavericks machine right now I cannot tell you the exact settings, but I would look in both /Library/Preferences and ~/Library/Preferences for files relating to speech recognition. Perhaps have both these folders open in the Finder in list view.
I would then in System Preferences turn on the options for Enhanced recognition for your country, yes this will start a download which you would need to do anyway for the packet capture as described above. This will also put the correct settings in the appropriate plist file. You should then in the Finder be able to see which file just got modified, this will confirm which file contains the settings.
    You can then run -
    sudo defaults read /path/to/file/com.apple.whateveritiscalled
This will read and display all the settings in that file. You can then see which ones contain the settings you need. I think from memory there are two settings you need to look for.
You could stop the download which is done by turning off the settings in System Preferences. You can then manually download the file presumably having found the URL in the packet capture. You can then do
sudo defaults write /path/to/file/com.apple.whateveritiscalled whatevertheprefiscalled whateverthesettingis
