Enhanced podcast question

I'm not certain if this is a podcasting or an ipod question, but I will pop it up here and see if anybody knows the answer. A school I am working at has been producing some nice enhanced (slide show) podcasts. They play just fine in iTunes and iWeb and loaded into a 5G iPod, there's no problem either. But in a couple of brand new "Classic" iPods, every time the podcast is played, the picture jumps forward a few slides at the beginning and the sound is mismatched.
Any clues?

Well, then Steve has it all backwards this time...older 5G players have no trouble. It's the new "classic" machines that are messing up the podcast...

  • Enhanced Podcast question(s)

I used SoundtrackPro to create an enhanced podcast. I shows up in iTunes as one long track (with chapters and graphics embedded) pretty much how I intended it show.
However 1) I'm not sure how to access the url links that I embedded in it as well (I thought clicking on the cover would do it but no...) 2) How can I get this podcast show up in a podcast directory instead of my music library?

    PS to the above:
I just plugged in my iPhone and it turns out that my podcast can't be dragged on it - I suppose it wants to there through syncing? So It's a bit of a hybrid file: neither a simple m4a nor a podcast.. sigh
(I did use the correct export settings in Soundtrack - AAC/Enhanced Podcast)

  • Enhanced podcast not publishing - runs perfectly in iWeb

All of a sudden my enhanced podcasts (audio tracks with photos) won't publish properly to my site. They appear correctly and run properly in iWeb, but when published only have audio. I have tried publishing from different locations thinking it could be a firewall issue, but that did not work. Any ideas?

Ok, I have found the answer to my own question. After banging my head against the wall for a long time and trying countless different things to get the podcast to work. I decided to try upgrading my hosting plan from the free GoDaddy hosting plan to the economy hosting plan. And voila Everything worked like it was supposed to in the first place. I only realized that the free hosting plan might be the problem after I tried creating a direct download link to the podcast and it did not work either. So I figured there was something fishy with the way the site was being hosted and it couldn't hurt to give it a try.
So boys and girls the moral to this story is don't use the free hosting plan provided by GoDaddy

  • Enhanced podcasts, images do not update in separate window?

Hi all, when I watch an enhanced podcast, the images update in the itunes artwork window as they should,
but if I click on the window to display the images in a separate window the images do not update in the new window,
if I do this with a video podcast then it works just fine, the video plays in the separate window without any problems,
is this a bug, or is itunes not able to do this yet?
    cheers, Rob

    Hi Rob,
Did you ever figure this out? I posted two similar questions (with no replies) before seeing yours. If this feature does not exist, I am thinking that this is something that Apple needs to address in the next iTunes update. Since Apple is promoting enhanced podcasts, it is only reasonable that iTunes make them easy to watch.

  • Enhanced Podcasts not working in 10.4.4 Firefox?

Every iWeb podcast page I've visited in Firefox 1.5 loads the QuickTime movie and shows an image and the playhead for a split second before being covered up by the QuickTime question mark image which links to the Quicktime download page.
    http://web.mac.com/joetye1/iWeb/NTRM/Podcast/Podcast.html
This is a page that does not work for me. Is this a Firefox issue, or do you have to create the enhanced podcasts a certain way for Firefox?

I'm having the same problem but in Safari. I can see my podcast artwork and play / pause / start buttons whilst the page is loading but when the page is complete, the podcast turns into the broken quicktime logo.
    http://web.mac.com/jamesward/iWeb/linda/Radio/Radio.html
I have definately got the latest version of everything installed.
The podcast was created in Garageband and sent to iWeb from there.
For some reason, friends who are using Windows can hear it no problem.
Also, the subscribe button works and the podcast works fine in iTunes.

  • Enhanced Podcast Glitch

My students created an enhanced podcast . . . I sent it to my webpage (iWeb), opened it in Safari and there's a funky question mark where the podcast should be.
It said I needed a newer version of Quicktime, but I have 7.1.6
Then, just as a fluke, I tried opening it in Firefox and it loaded fine and worked fine. The podcast also worked on my Dell.
I tried emptying my cache in Safari too.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Enhanced podcasts on iPhone not playing pictures

I have recently downloaded a Enhanced Podcast that has several pictures that play while listening. When I play this in iTunes or on my iPod Video, it works beautifully. When I play it on my iPhone, I get no pictures.
Is this even possible with an iPhone?? I cannot seem to get show notes about the podcast either. This seems like critical stuff left out of the iPhone

    Hello NeelsdL,
Thanks for the question. Podcasts on the iPhone are now managed from the Podcast for iOS application. For more information, please see the following resource:
About the Podcasts app for iOS

Once you have the Podcasts app installed, you will be able to manage your podcasts from iTunes.

  • Trouble viewing enhanced podcasts

When I am using iTunes, I can click on the album art and it displays (almost) full-screen in its own window.
When I am watching a video in iTunes, I can option-click the small image and the movie will play (almost) full-screen in its own window.
If I am watching an enhanced podcast (.m4b) in iTunes, the pictures change (like a slide show) at the beginning of each “chapter.” If I click one of these pictures, it displays (almost) full-screen in its own window. (So far so good...)
    Here’s my question / problem:
When viewing an enhanced podcast in its own window, the pictures do not change in the large window. I can see the pictures still changing in the smaller “album art” window, but the only way to view the picture sequence in the larger window seems to be to click on the small image every time it advances to the new image.
Is this right? Is there some way to watch the changing pictures in their own window?
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

here's been my work around solution that seems to work fine - there's probably a quicker way, so let me know.
    1. from garage band, share to disk (for better quality images, i took off the set images to 300x300 box). don't send to itunes yet. file exports as an .m4a.
    2. open .m4a file using quicktime (i use quicktime player 10.0). file uploads images, chapters, etc.
    3. save file as .mov file. (select format that works for you - i've been trying the HD 480p option).
    4. drag .mov file to itunes.
    5. sync MOVIES. play within movies.
    6. play out of the video APP.
hope that helps. let me know if you have any better luck or other options. seems terrible that i would have to save every enhanced podcast as a .mov file.

  • Enhanced Podcasts - opitmal photo sizes

The Nano, 4G and 5G iPods have a different screen sizes, so what's the best size for the pictures in an Enhanced Podcast?
Also, what format is best to avoid re-compression? -- Jpeg?
    Thanks!

I started this post thinking the 4G and nano's ratios were the same, but now I've learned different! The 5G and nano resolutions have the same ratio, ie. a 320x240 picture scaled for the nano will still fill the screen. AND, I believe I ran tests earlier that showed that a picture at a 4:3 ratio will still fill an iPod color 4G screen with no black edges (I believe the left and right edges are chopped off.)
Anyway, the "perfect" solution would be to have three different sets of media (like this guy http://www.ipodsubwaymaps.com/) to prevent re-compression, but outside of that, if this is photos (not map info which has to be pixel perfect) create one 4:3 picture that will match either the nano's or 5G's native resolution. I'm not even certain if you should consider the 4G since, when I last checked, you couldn't get the artwork of an enhanced podcast to stay on the screen, so no one on those pods would see it anyway (unless Apple updates the firmware to handle this one day).
To answer your other question, I believe any image you offer is going to be recompressed by iTunes to show on the iPod, so start with a nice lossless format so the algorithm has a good source to sample from, like PNG.

  • "Enhanced Podcast" error

I have a podcast up on my son's website, http://web.mac.com/bauerkemper
It was created using Garage Band and shared with iWeb via the usual method. Now it is giving an error... a large 'question mark quicktime logo' and says that "This enhanced podcast requires QuickTime 7.0.2 or later. Click Here to download."
The problem is I am using QuickTime 7.1.6. What gives?

    http://web.mac.com/bauerkemper/iWeb/Site/listening%20place/598B3C95-3014-4F06-B1 49-435DE2D41D37_files/dads%20announcement.m4a
    One of your .m4a files.
Seems like the new "security" update in QuickTime doesn't like "enhanced" (.m4a) files.
It's a known "bug" and only Apple can fix it.
The .m4a file is really MPEG-4 audio and shouldn't contain any "video". Manually changing the file extension using the Finder from .m4a to .m4v and editing the iWeb pages by uploading these new files will fix the trouble.
They will now go into iWeb as .m4v format and work as intended but you'll need to make the change using Finder until Apple provides a "fix".

Oh, and I forgot to mention that we also support the ability to read url (web links) from within the notes of your slides. Now you can take advantage of enhanced podcasts support for handling embedded links in your files.
With enhanced podcasts your audience will be able to see what you are talking about and visit the websites that you reference during your presentation by simply clicking on the current slide while they are playing the presentation back!
To use this feature, simply add the url (web link) that you want to embed in your podcast on the first line of the notes field in your presentation. Then set the title of the link that you want to be displayed by entering it on the second line of the notes field! ProfCast will read these urls and automatically generate links in your enhanced podcast file!

  • Looking for Chapter Tool Beta or other app to create enhanced podcasts

Hi all. I am looking at creating enhanced podcasts. On Google I found a mysterious app that Apple has apperantly created - "Chapter Tool Beta". However, all links to this app are dead. Any idea what happened to that app?
Also, what are some alternatives? Garage Band doesn't work well, as in this project I am working on, we have to show a screen shot, then in the next "frame" same screen shot, but with a highlight box over an area. And, it's hard to line up images in GB. Any ideas? Thanks,

I think the Chapter Tool is now dead - though someone did ask about this a few weeks back: it might be worth searching for the thread to see whether anyone could help.
I would suggest you look at Podcast Maker: this will take your pre-existing mp3 files and add chapters and images to make an m4a 'enhanced podcast', and incorporate the information you give it into a feed file. It will then upload the podcast to your iDisk or other server and ping the iTunes Store for you. I've used it for three years now and found it very reliable.

  • I can't get garageband to export!  It keeps getting stuck at 'creating chapters' when I try to export my enhanced podcast.  Please help!

I am trying to export my enhanced podcast through garageband.  I have all the current updates.  I am on my MacBookPro 10.6.8 2.3GHz with 8GB ram.  My enhanced podcast (podcast with pictures) is about 80 mins long and I have tried exporting with everything from the lowest settings to the highest always with the same result.  I have tried deleting GB preferences.  I have tried repairing permissions to no avail.
I hit export to disk or send to itunes.
I select some AAC format I want (optimized for spoken podcast).
It slowly builds the mix, normalizes, and creates chapters (yeah, it goes through the creating chapters bar to completion)
Then it goes all candystripe on the creating chapters bar once it fills up and will hang forever (hung for 8 hours....pretty much sounds like 'forever' in my book).
Please help...I have my podcast sitting there waiting to be used....I have tried exporting smaller chunks (by moving the end of file bar) but that doesn't work either.  Is there a way to just send the pictures and the picture start times over to imovie and work with it there?  I'd much rather work with the tools that imovie has but man that program is just a PITA to use when you want to run through 100+ pictures for variable durations (whereas it's easy to just drag and drop with garageband as you do playback).
The file only has one stereo audio track!

Hi notmatthew, I have exactly the same problem as you. I am trying to export a podcast about iPod X Anniversary so I need to publish it next sunday.
It's midnight in Spain but tomorrow I will tray something I read in other post:
    w4b3l said:
    Problem solved.
I deleted the chapters one by one, exporting it each time, until it worked. i then replaced the image (which was a .jpg and i converted to .png) with that chapter and now it works.
    Could you try it?

  • Enhanced Podcasts Not Enhanced on iPad

Am I overlooking something extremely obvious or are Enhanced Podcasts no longer supported by the 3rd gen iPad (2012)?  When I play an enhanced podcast in the Music app, it looks and plays just like any other podcast.  I don't see options to select chapters, the artwork doesn't change when a new chapter starts and there are no clickable links.
I really hope this is a bug on the latest iPad or stupidity on my part as I think enhanced podcasts are some of the best around.  I'd really hate to loose all the functionality of these wonderful shows.

Have you thought about downloading the free Apple Podcast App?

  • Enhanced podcasts

No where on Apple's site does it say that YOU MUST HAVE CHAPTER TOOL to post enhanced podcasts made in Garage band.
Yet it seems that other people on the web have posted this info.
    http://www.voxmedia.org/wiki/PodcastChapterTool#iPodChapterBug
Why doesn't Apple have all the info we need to create and upload enhanced podcasts using Garage band and iweb posting to .mac and itunes?
After many calls to apple care no one mentions this in any support area! Yet at macworld posting an enhanced podcast required no chapter tool or work in Terminal! Please post the actual way to do this! Somewhere official from Apple.

This forum is for the program iWeb, which is not involved in the creation of podcasts. You should post your problem in the forums for Garageband:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=127
In any case, in the forums you are just talking to other users like yourself. To convey your wishes to Apple, use the feedback channels.
