Enhanced podcasts: Blank white fullscreen image

Hi all,
I see that in firmware v1.0.2, enhanced podcasts are no supported. However, I am having trouble with a particular enhanced podcast, "History of Photography Podcasts" by Jeff Curto. When I push the center button to get the full screen cover art mode, the iPod only shows a blank white screen. My guess is the images are too large for the iPod Classic to process. However, the images are shown and do change when in the normal art/info initial play screen.
Any ideas? Does my theory sound right?
BTW, one can subscribe to the podcast via the iTunes Store.
Thanks,
Steven

I updated to firmware 1.0.3 and now the embedded artwork/images show up in cover art full screen mode.
Thanks Apple,

  • Enhanced Podcast Playback, with chapters and useable images?

I'm having trouble streaming enhanced podcasts from my iTunes PC to my Apple TV (software v.2.0). The audio plays, but there are no chapter markers show and no images.
If I sync the enhanced podcast I get the images (without any obvious chapter markers). The problem with this is that the images are displaced in the "angled" box next to the playtime line on the AppleTV. This is OK for some images, but useless for some that are presentation slides, e.g. in the excellent Jeff Curto photography history podcasts. http://photohistory.jeffcurto.com/
has anyone any suggestions on how I can view the slides "face on" and preferably full screen?
    Thanks
    Martin

I have been having a similar problem too. I have noticed that the enhanced podcast works on ipods, laptops, etc but I have yet to see it work correctly on Apple TV. The more I look into the problem... the more I begin to believe it is a bug with Apple TV.
I am hoping an answer comes up very soon or even an update.

  • Enhanced podcast fullscreen picture

I have a 30 gb photo iPod and would like to see the enhanced podcast picture in fullscreen. I have searched for a way to do this and can't find one. Has anyone been able to find out how to do this? Thanks for your help.

I think the problem is that your chapter titles are too long. If you make them shorter, they'll show up on the webpage too.
Another tip for you: I notice you have the chapter "ComicBookLover" four different times because you have four different pictures to go with it. If that's the way you want it, that's fine. But if you only want one chapter, in GarageBand, delete just the titles from the last three chapter markers. When the file is played in iTunes, the viewer will still see the four different pictures but you'll only have one "ComicBookLover" chapter.

  • Playing enhanced podcasts

Is anyone having trouble - not seeing the images during an enhanced podcast on their ipod classic. I don't know if its something I'm not doing since my last ipod was a b/w that didn't play anything but the audio. The video podcasts play just fine - just the enhanced ones that aren't working.

I'm not seeing the fix. Now, it just shows a music note icon and when I cycle through the different screens with the center button, the screen that should show the large picture of the artwork is just blank.
This is occuring on the Retromac Podcast...Anyone else?
After putting up the "FIXED" post last night, I noticed that while the feature is there, it's not as reliable as it should be (though it's certainly better than none at all). I noticed that after playing around with my iPod for a while (oh so speedy!), returning to the Macworld Podcast brought on the same behavior you described: cycling to the fullscreen album art portion of "Now Playing" only came up as blank. It only corrected itself after I had synched over new podcasts.
So, it appears that the enhanced podcast feature (at least for fullscreen art) can get temporarily "messed up" to where the fullscreen area only shows a blank white screen. But, synching over new podcasts files (which presumably reconstructs any podcast database information on the iPod) fixes the issue... at least until the next time it messes up.
As for no artwork at all displaying (getting the grey box and music note on the "Playback Progress Meter" Now Playing screen)... it just seems to be slow on occasion. I've been stuck on the grey box for up to 5 seconds using an enhanced podcast, but it eventually pulled in the artwork (I could hear the hard drive whirring in the iPod as it searched). Once I had to actually switch out to a different podcast for a second, and then return to the enhanced podcast to get the art to show up. As I said earlier.... the enhanced podcast features are there, they're just not as reliable as they ought to be.
By the way, I did download an episode of the Retromac podcast (Episode 41: Left-handed Mac), it showed the enhanced podcast artwork - including fullscreen - correctly. You might need to sync over an additional podcast file to rebuild/fix the podcast database on your iPod, but it should work.

  • View images from enhanced podcasts on AppleTV (2nd gen)

Is there a way to view the images embedded in enhanced audio podcasts through AppleTV? I listen to a number of photography podcasts that discuss particular images but the audio isn't much good if I cannot see the image. Thanks.

An example would be any audio podcast of the Martin Bailey Photography Podcast or the History of Photography podcast by Jeff Curto... Is there a way to view the images embedded in enhanced audio podcasts through AppleTV?
Okay... I selected the Jeff Curto "Photo History - Class 6 Spring 11 - Photography and Painting" podcast for test purposes. The easiest way to view this specific file on the TV2 device seems to be to simply lie to iTunes.
    1) Download the podcast in your normal manner.
    2) Delete the podcast from iTunes and send it to your trash can.
    3) Drag the file back to your desktop.
    4) Change the M4A (".m4a") file extension to M4V (".m4v").
    5) Re-import the file to your iTunes library.
Your audio podcast will now load/play on the TV2 as if it were a video podcast.

  • Dropped images in enhanced podcast

I have been creating enhanced podcasts and am noticing that a handful of images will not display after I've transfered the file from iTunes to my iPod. All files are saved and imported in the same way, yet less than a dozen out of 50-60 images won't display on the iPod. It plays and displays fine in iTunes. Is anyone else experiencing this problem. And if so what is a work around?
    Thanks!

I'm having the exact same issue. My enhanced podcast (this is the first one I've done) is only about three minutes in, but has a ton of images, all of which play fine in iTunes, but do not play on either my iPod nano third-generation, or my second generation iPod touch. I have a hard time believing that the processor speed on those devices isn't fast enough to keep up, given that they can do so much (especially the iPod touch) with graphics. I really was that Apple would get on this, but in their relentless pursuit to push certain things, a lot is getting left out.

  • Image Size for Enhanced podcasts

    Hi
I've started producing enhanced podcasts but the images never look good. Most are grainy. I've stuck with iTunes recommendation for art work of 300 x 300 pixels at 72 dpi. Is ther a better size/setting?

I've never understood why Apple recommends only 72dpi - perhaps to reduce storage space on their servers. ...Your G5 and PC screens are probably much higher resolution. MacBooks are around 110ppi. Try upping the image setting from 72 to 110 and see if that reduces the grainy appearance.

  • Enhanced podcasts, images do not update in separate window?

Hi all, when I watch an enhanced podcast, the images update in the itunes artwork window as they should,
but if I click on the window to display the images in a separate window the images do not update in the new window,
if I do this with a video podcast then it works just fine, the video plays in the separate window without any problems,
is this a bug, or is itunes not able to do this yet?
    cheers, Rob

    Hi Rob,
Did you ever figure this out? I posted two similar questions (with no replies) before seeing yours. If this feature does not exist, I am thinking that this is something that Apple needs to address in the next iTunes update. Since Apple is promoting enhanced podcasts, it is only reasonable that iTunes make them easy to watch.

  • Image edited in Photoshop appears as blank white version in Aperture

I am editing images in Photoshop this way: export RAW file to ACR for adjustment. Go back to Aperture and open the same file in external editor (PSD format). Then I select the ACR version, paste it into the Aperture export, flatten, reduce to 8-bit, and save.
This works fine as long as I choose 8-bit in ACR. But when I choose 16-bit and go through exactly the same process, I end up with a blank white image in Aperture. The edited photo won't display at all.
Any ideas why this is happening?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    <...>
Here's the thing. When I try to go through the steps
in the action "manually", I am not able to paste the
ACR version into the Aperture PSD. What happens is I
choose select all, then copy, then close the ACR
version... and then when I go up to the "Edit" menu
to select "paste", it is greyed out. I can't for the
life of me figure out why this works in the action
but won't work when I go though it myself.
Finally, I tried re-opening the white file from
Aperture "in external editor" and it opens into
Photoshop white as well. In the layers palette the
original image (the exported version from Aperture,
not the one I adjusted from Photoshop) is clearly
visible in the background layer, with one all-white
layer on top. I imagine this is very confusing... I
hope you can make sense of it!
The last part actually made the most sense to me...
It really seems like just as you are noticing in the manual operations, something is going wrong in the process of selecting the ACR image and pasting it into the exported PSD. That all-white layer is a giveaway that something in the pasting process is going wrong in the action, and basically just creating an all-new layer that has nothing in it. My guess is if you remove that all-white layer and save the file that returning to Aperture would show you the background image from the file.
I am not sure what could be going wrong there except that it could be the process you are trying does not work well with CS, and needs CS2 to work properly. I have not tried the whole smart object approach posted earlier so I am not really sure of problems that may arise.
Have you thought about batch-converting your RAW files in Photoshop ACR to 16-bit TIFF files and importing them instead? You'll still get the same degree of flexibility in alterations you can make to the images. You can even edit these TIFF masters directly in Aperture through the Finder without going through Aperture, if you want to save a little space and avoid the creation of a new version for some Photoshop work.
You can also import 8-bit TIFF files as well but if you plan to do any alterations it's really better to work with 16-bit images from the start as it gives you the maximum ability to work with tones in an image without posterization.

  • Images imported... some ruined with blank white and color banding

I'm using Lightroom 4... i've been importing my RAW images from my external harddrive. Some show up in the catalog as ruined with a blank white section and color bands.  I've checked the actual image on the external hard drive and it is fine. I've deleted the ruined files from the LR catalog, then re-imported those problem ones... still come in as white with banding.  I've even tried deleting them from the catalog, then from the harddrive... then back onto the HD from the camera, then back into lightroom. Some look ok until I look at then in loupe view... and the same problem happens.  Meanwhile the images on the HD and on the camera's CF card are fine.  Suggestions???

You have to troubleshoot and eliminate the bad hardware that is causing the corruption.
It could be anything from the camera writing bad image data, to the card not accepting the image data, to the card-reader or camera-cable corrupting data as it’s been transferred to the hard-disk failing or the computer memory failing.
Only you or someone at your computer can only determine which of these is the problem by changing one component at a time to see which one makes a difference.  The most common issue is the memory card, and the next common is the card read or cable, but it could be other things.
The first thing to try is copy the same images, again, and see if the corruption occurs exactly the same or not.  If so then the image data is likely bad on the card, so the card or camera is at fault.  If the corruption is different the second time the images are copies, then the corruption is likely happening in the transfer or on the computer, so that eliminates the camera (and maybe the card).

  • Epson scanner and image capture: blank white image

I've been trying to make an epson perfection 1670 scanner work on an iMac running 10.6.4
Since epson no longer specifically supports this model I am going to Image Capture and the epson drivers supplied by Apple. I have downloaded/installed the updated drivers twice (once via software update and once manually from apple support).
I can get image capture to recognize the scanner and perform preview and full scans.
The frustrating thing is that the image generated is completely blank; a white page. I have tried using the scanner and image capture on two other mac's (macBook pro, macBook) both running 10.6.4 and both of these produce the same white page (although they do recognize the scanner).
I thought the scanner may have finally broken so i tested it on another (old) iMac G3 running os x 10.4.11 and epson's scanning utility; it worked fine and made a nice scan.
I have tried to get epson's scanning utility to work under 10.6.4 by reinstalling it; I can get it to startup and run the scanner but it too produces a blank white image!
I conclude there is some basic software incompatibility between the drivers and os x 10.6.4. Its odd that the drivers and image capture can run the scanner but cannot send an image to the computer.
The epson driver in the latest apple update is version 5.2.5 (Copyright 2003 ???) while the latest driver on the epson site (for image capture) is 5.3. Tried to download the epson driver and got file not found (*!%#?&).
done what I can; any suggestions?

I had the same problem with my Epson 1260 scanner. The "updated" drivers provided by both Apple and Epson produced the exact same result - blank white pages, or if anything showed up at all, it would be all chopped up and skewed, like it had gone through a shredder. Trying to adjust the brightness and other slider settings made no difference.
After wrestling with it for a week, I finally found a solution. First make sure Rosetta is installed. Use the old PowerPC Epson TWAIN driver from 2003; with the filename EPSON TWAIN 5.ds. Put it in the folder /Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/.
Then, don't use Image Capture. Download Graphic Converter. Set it to open in Rosetta mode. Then you can use Graphic Converter's File -> Acquire -> TWAIN Acquire... menu command to scan using the old EPSON TWAIN driver.

  • Enhanced Podcast Image Size?

Hi - I'm wondering if anyone knows what the minimum, maximum, recommended, or optimal image size and resolution are for building enhanced podcasts in Garageband. I have looked through a variety of support options at Apple and I can't find any guidelines about what file types and sizes can be used when adding images to an enhanced podcast, just which sound and video files are supported. The podcasts may be viewed via iTunes or on an iPod, so the viewing size may vary drastically. Any tips would be helpful! Thank you!

    Hi
Optimal size/resolution for an extended podcast image is 300x300 at 72 dpi. Use .jpg

  • Enhanced Podcasts images not appearing in iTunes

I'm using the host site Podbean.com to publish to iTunes. My enhanced podcasts (m4a) files appear on the host site (http://bias.podbean.com) just fine. But when I watch them on the iTunes host page (below) the images do not appear in the podcast while it plays. I have the cover photo but none of the photos in the enhanced podcast. When I originally sent it to iTunes from GarageBand it worked fine, (and still does in my playlist) but the feed available to my students (which is the whole point) doesn't come out right, thoughts?
    http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=310271037

iTunes does not show the images in enhanced podcasts when you simply play them from the Store page - don't ask me why. If you subscribe, then you will see the images, and this is the best way for your students to get your podcasts.
If you click the 'subscribe' button on the Store page, then you will see the podcast listed when you click on Library>Podcasts in the sidebar. Clicking on the disclosure triangle will show the list of episodes: the latest one will be downloaded automatically and you can click on 'Get' to download the earlier ones. All subsequent episodes will be downloaded automatically as soon as they are published (provided iTunes is running). When you play them you will see the images.

  • HELP!?!   Enhanced podcast images out of sync!!

I created an enhanced podcast using GarageBand and adding cover art for each track.
When I play the file in VLC player or Winamp, the images show up correctly, exactly the way they should.
But when I download the podcast on my iPod touch, the images are out of sync. There will be tracks that are supposed to have cover art, but instead display the Podcast's default image, and then the cover art for the previous track shows up late, on the wrong track.
Again, to be clear, there in nothing wrong with the file that is up download - the artwork displays correctly. It is when it is downloaded through iTunes (on an iPhone/iTouch) that the images display incorrectly - and these two are the platforms that enhanced podcasts take advantage of.
    What could be the problem??

I don't know if this is the same thing, but I had a problem with footage from my XL1s. The strange thing, on the timeline, the audio and video tracks were of the same length, but when playing the time line, the video lagged the audio by 2 or 3 seconds. It turned out that the 'problem' wasn't real. The computer was under heavy load and apparently was simply slow in processing and displaying the video image. When I rebooted the computer and ran only FCP, the same clips played back perfectly in sync.
