Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) in windows Thin pc deployment

Hi.
I have deployed windows 7 Embedded Standard (Thic-pc) and i want that at the end of the deployment to enable EWF .
I have tested ewf manualy after logon locally and it worked.
How can i enble ewf with osd task sequence ?

Yes, it's a simple command to manage the write filters, the script does a lot of checking to deal with variations.
If you have a very simple environment with little/no variation then maybe skip the script.
I don't understand what your error is (you haven't stated) nor how you are implementing via TS (you haven't stated), nor if you are rebooting after attempting to enable the WF (you haven't stated).
I'm not personally familiar with WES7 but have managed XPe a long time ago and it doesn't seem much different (well the WF aspects anyway)
hmm, maybe you need to ask in the WES forums then, to see if somebody there is familiar with WES+SCCM/OSD/TS?
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/quebecmisc/threads
If you think the technet script is not suitable for WES7 then perhaps you could suggest how it lacks and offer some improvement via the community/comments on the technet page?

  • Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) in Windows 7 Enterprise

My question has two parts. First off, is there an official, supported way to get Enhanced Write Filter working in fully fledged Windows 7 Enterprise? If not, is it possible to install Windows Embedded Standard 7 on a normal Thick Client PC?
The reason I ask is because we would ideally like to be able to ensure that no data (temp files, recent documents etc) are saved to the hard drive either at shutdown or if someone simply powers off the PC.
    Any help/advice gratefully received.
Note: I've also asked this question in the Windows 7 Security forum, but they suggested I post here.

It is not legally allowed to have EWF or FBWF in the Windows 7 Enterprise (Windows 7 with licensing restrictions). You can build a WES7 image that is almost a full Windows features (no games) and have EWF or FBWF in the image.

Cannot install over embedded OS with WF enabled on the system drive.
You have to disable write filters on that device first.

  • Unified Write Filter - Software Center Fails to Load

When using Windows Embedded 8.1 Embedded Industry with the Unified Write Filter (UWF), we are having problems with Software Center. I know you can't run Optional Advertisements with UWF enabled but Software Center should still work.  Instead I get the
    following error:
There is a problem showing the current status.  More information: Loading Software Center returned error code 0x87D00244 (-2016411068).
If I disable UWF it works fine. This also worked fine with UWF enabled on Windows Embedded 8 (not 8.1). Any thoughts? Thanks!

Here is a snip from the log, I do see exceptions:  Thoughts?

  • Best or Good Practices Handling Enhanced Write Filters (SCCM R2 and WES7)

    Hello,
I wonder if there is a possibility to handle the EWF in WES7 with SCCM 2012 R2. Let me explain what I mean:
What I want to do: Deploy and install OS updates
    1. The build-in write filter handling doesn'nt work, don't know why, nobody could help me here.
=> In addition, a simple Commit would endanger the clients persistence.
    2. Do it with a task sequence: For example:
Reboot all devices in a collection to make sure no unwanted changes are commited
    a) TS: CommitAndDisable -live
    b) TS: Install all available software updates
    c) TS: Enable EWF and reboot
=> Does not work if an update requires more than one restart (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2894518/de)
    Any ideas?

Since no one has answer this, I recommend that you contact CSS directly for support , They can work with you to solve this problem.

  • Deploying Software to WES7 Device with enabled Write Filter

    Hi all,
we are deploying SCCM Applications to WES7 with enabled FBWF. The Option "Commit changes at deadline during maintanance window" is enabled on the Deployment, and the installation itself works perfectly fine. (Reboot, Installation with Lockscreen,
    Reboot)
But after the installation is finished, it takes some minutes (up to 20) until the device reboots to re-enable the Write Filter.
Is there any flag or command we can set or execute at the end of the installation to reboot and unlock the Workstation?

I don't have a direct answer, but this forum is for Windows Embedded POSready. You might want to post to the Windows Embedded Standard 7 forum:

  • Office 2013 on Windows Thin PC

I am having an issue with Office 2013 on Windows Thin PC. It opens up just fine but after going into the Save As menu, if I click on any of the buttons to open the directory window (such as Browse) it crashes the application and points to kernelbase.dll
(which doesn't really help a lot). It works fine on Windows 7 Pro but Windows 7 Thin PC seems to have compatibility issues. It is consistent across all of the Office apps and all of our Thin PC machines. In my experience, this means that either there is some
feature missing from the Thin PC image that I need to roll out or I'm simply out of luck and will need to potentially deploy it as a virtual app to get it to work. I was wondering if any of the Office 2013 experts knew of any core component that could be missing
from the Thin PC image or if anyone has experience with this issue.
    Thanks!

    Hi Scott,
As you may have already known, the Office application crash error related to "KERNELBASE.dll" may occurs due to lots of reasons. I'm afraid it's hard for us to know which specific "feature" or "core component" is missing
here, especially when it's installed on a non-supported operation system.
Windows Thin PC is not a supported Windows operating systems on which you can run Office 2013 program. It is specifically designed to be used as a thin client OS. It uses lower CPU cycles, with local application execution typically restricted to security
    and management.
So you cannot run any productivity applications, such as Microsoft Office or similar applications on it. If you do so, you might have unexpected issues.

  • Can I dual boot Windows Thin PC on my Windows 7?

    Hi
I would like to try the Windows Thin PC, can I install it on my Windows 7 and dual boot, if I need it I logon to Thin PC.
    KW - CNE,MCSE,VCP5

    Hi KANE,
Windows Thin PC is a locked-down version of Windows 7. As a result, it will be able to run on any device that is capable of running Windows 7.
Since I have no Windows Thin PC to take a test. An at least advantage of using existing PCs as thin clients is that you can continue to use the hard disk for data that has been stored there.
Furthermore, You could try if the thin client OS of choice can be installed as a dual boot option.

  • Issues in Filter (F4 help) window

We have several reports which has issues with the filter (F4 help) window. when any user wants to filter the reports these filter window show blank screen with message " Please Wait".  Filter window never displays values and keeps processing
This issue is only limited to certain variables in variable entry screen and in the report
How can we increase the performance of these filters.
    Solutions we tried.
We tried changing the HTML Code. We asked BASIS/SQL DBA to reindex the master data tables. It only worked for certain reports.

    Hello Jeeth,
In my opinion, if you have this problem only with certain variables, that means that your variants are wrong or inconsistents, So you filter is lost.
I give you an example, if you have two implemented filters in the same window like this:
    Fiscal year : 2011
    Fiscal period : 11.2010
The filter still buferring so long and no results will be displayed.
    So please check your filters.
    Thanks.

  • Oracle 11g on Unix server needs to write files (.csv) on Windows server

    Hi,
Currently we are using Oracle 10g which is installed on a Unix server and on the same server there is a directory under which some files are being exported/downloaded by the db.
We are having DEDICATED DB INSTANCE on the SHARED server, and not a DEDICATED SERVER.
Now we need to migrate from Oracle 10g to 11g, but due to some complaince issue, we have been asked to create those directories on some other server. We have identified a Windows server and can create directories.
Now I request any expert to pls suggest/guide me that how can the db (on Unix server) export/write files on another Windows server?
I read in a thread that the server (where files should be exported) should be MOUNTED on the server where db is physically installed.
    Pls help me here.....

How is the process on the local server suppose to deal with errors when it attempts to create a CSV file on the remote server? Or deal with network bottlenecks that results in severe performance degradation when trying to create a CSV file? Or if there lacks freespace for creating the CSV file?
What about security? How is the local Oracle server to authenticate itself with the remote server? How is the remote server to protect that directory share against unauthorised access?
How is this remote server going to provide access to authorised s/w to these CSV files?
Who (local or remote processes) is going to manage this directory share and ensure old CSV files are deleted and that there is sufficient freespace for new CSV files?
There are a LOT of questions that need to be asked... BEFORE deciding on HOW technically to do it. As the technical decision will be based on the functional requirements and how to best meet these.
Technically - there is Samba, NFS, FTP, SFTP, SCP, RDIST and a number of other methods that can be used. But without asking the above questions and getting proper business answers, selecting a specific technical method is very much premature.
You are asking the wrong questions, and in the wrong forum. You need to determine the business requirements first.

  • Quicktime would fail to write/export to server windows share with "Error -43: file not found" errors

    Summary:
With the combination of Windows 7 and Quicktime 7.x, Quicktime would fail to write/export to server windows share with "Couldn't create output movie storage" and "Error -43: file not found" errors
    Steps to Reproduce:
Trying to render to Quicktime files using network shared folders as a destination:
    Unable to open file. (-1610153459)
The funny thing: it only happens when there are at least two shared folders mapped on the workstation, and the destination folder used for the rendered movie is not the first one.
If we have only two mapped drives, F: and G: for example, and we try to render something to F:, everything works fine and no error is showed. But, when the destination is the G: drive, rendering never works, the error is showed, but a zero-byte file is created in F: (!!). ODD! If we remap F: drive with a different letter, but a letter BEFORE G:, the problem always happens. If we remap drive F: to any letter AFTER G:, making G: the first available network drive, rendering works. Also, simply unmapping F: and leaving G: as the only connected network folder makes render to work.
We do not have a D: drive in our Windows 7 workstations, they are all C: only.
It is a 100% reproducible problem. We tried with three different Active Directory networks and workstations. It has all of the features of a software bug.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers!
    Expected Results:
    Error -43: file not found
    Actual Results:
The workaround seems to be to use the full path to the servers instead of the mapped mount point (ie //server/z/... instead of Z:/...
    Regression:
All versions of quicktime 7 in combination with windows 7 client and more than one smb share point mapped in a letter.
    Notes:
All software that uses quicktime movie exports showed this error.

Not sure what file your are referencing?  Thanks for your suggestion, however, it's not relavant.
It renders fine if you render to either the UNC path or the first mapped drive.
i.e. If you have two mapped drives G: and H:
    they both point to \\fileserver\share1\folder
If you render to H: it will fail, if you render to G: it works!  Same path, same user, same permissions.
The only difference is H comes after G, so it fails... BUG.  If it was to do with anything else, underscores, permissions etc, it would fail on both.

  • I'm trying to write a very simple window

I'm trying to write a system status window that allows me to use HTML and which can be updated as the system performs various tasks. This seems like such a trivial task that I cannot believe it's so baffling. I'd like to do this without needing ten thousand different SWING components, functions, factories, and what not that might be useful if I were trying to write every interface in the world.
    Help!

  • MDT 2012 Update 1 - Attempting to capture Windows Thin PC but it keeps looping after reboot.

I have been trying to capture a master image of Windows Thin PC we have prepared using MDT 2012 Update 1 but to no avail. When attempting the capture process using LiteTouch.vbs it syspreps and then reboots as it normally would and then it simply keeps rebooting
over and over in a loop.
I am unsure of how to bypass this and correctly capture Windows Thin PC using MDT 2012 Update 1. If anyone has any advice or feedback they can offer I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Logs suggest that the script is most likely crashing early on.
I suspect that the reason for this is that the deployment share was *updated* from a previous version of MDT, and some files are out of date.
Can you update the share (full update, regenerate from scratch?)
Otherwise we may need to run Litetouch.wsf manually from within WinPE:
When WinPE Boots and you have a mouse, press F8.
Run TaskMgr.exe and verify that wscript.exe is no longer running (wait 2 minutes).
    Then run the following command:
    "cscript.exe x:\deploy\scripts\litetouch.wsf /debug:true /debugcapture"
That should run the litetouch.wsf script and it should display any errors if found.

  • Is there a maximum number of Network Filter Drivers in Windows 7?

I recently tried to install Windows XP Mode on my Windows 7 laptop, and experienced a number of failures...
According to a post elsewhere on this forum (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-GB/w7itprovirt/thread/00c74bd9-da7b-4acb-ae5a-7112377bc7e2), one of the possible causes of this is if the maximum number of network filter drivers is installed - from Thayu:
"From your logs, the error is 0x8004a029, which basically indicates that the maximum number of network filter drivers has been reached.
Could you uninstall any other network filter driver that you think is not necessary and try installing VPC again?"
So, I uninstalled Cisco VPN, and retried the XP Mode installation, which now worked... However, I am now unable to re-install Cisco VPN - presumably for the same reason...
The software I have installed that seems relevant is:
    Symantec Endpoint Security
    Checkpoint VPN-1 SecureClient
Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (XP Mode)
So, am I right in thinking the maximum number of network filter drivers in Windows 7 is 3??  Is this configurable??
This is a really worrying limit for me, as I have a number of customers that I have to be able to connect to, requiring both CheckPoint and Cisco VPN software to be installed... I also require XP Mode to connect by VPN to legacy clients that don't support the MS-CHAP2 protocol, and I'd be stupid to run without Anti-virus...
    Any suggestions?
    Nick

    Hi,
Based on my research, I would like to answer you that the maximum number of network filter drivers in Windows 7 is 14. However, it is hard coded to allow 14 filter drivers. By default, the number is 8. To view the number or modify the number, please access the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\MaxNumFilters
Usually, the network filter drivers are listed in the Network Connection’s Properties. Also, it can be located by some third party programs, such as antivirus program.
    Thanks,
    Novak
