Enhancement request; Address book unfiled Smart folder, like iPhoto

I could not seem to create a Smart Folder to contain any address cards not filed in another folder, just like iPhoto.
Can this be done? If not, please consider this an enhancement request for the Leapord Address book. It should be an easy addition.
Thank you!

Just for clarity, this is a user-to-user forum, so there is no point in asking Apple for anything here. If you want to make suggestions to Apple use OS X Feedback.
I don't use iPhoto, so can't comment on the comparison, but in Address Book all contacts are stored in the AddressBook.data file. For convenience you can put contacts into groups (which I think is what you mean by folders) but it doesn't in any way change where (or how) the contact is stored. Indeed, a single contact can be a member of many groups - you can see which groups a contact is assigned to by selecting it and pressing the alt key.
To come to your particular issue, there is no handy way of in Address book of seeing which contacts are not assigned to groups, but it can be easily done with Applescript - there is one posted in this thread.

  • New Smart Folder in iPhoto

I am trying to set up a new smart folder in iPhoto to collect all my video clips.  I have followed the instructions but there is no 'Movie' word for me to select in my drop down menu list of words.  How do I add this word?  Currently there is a random list of words contained - no idea how they have arrived in the list.

Are you using the smart rule "Photo is ...."?
    It should look like this:

  • Smart folder in iphoto to burn folder on desktop

    Hi.
I set up a smart folder in IPHOTO (collecting all photo's taken on a vacation) and have set up a burn folder on the desktop.
I can't figure out how to get the smart folder to the burn folder. It won't move from within Iphoto or via the finder.
Is what I want to do possible in Tiger and Iphoto?
    I have a new Macbook.
    thanks in advance.

If by :burn to the desktop: you mean copy, then no. You have to either select all and drag to a folder on the desktop or use the File->Export->File Export menu route.
If you want to burn directly to a disk with those images then click on the smart album and use the File->Export->File Export menu route but this time selecting the blank mounted disk on the desktop as the final destination.
    Do you Twango?

  • If I create a smart folder in iPhoto, and then delete it, are the pictures gone?

I am still trying to figure iPhoto out. I just created a "Smart Folder" and it imported some of my photos. I decided to delete that folder. Did that delete the pictures or are they still somewhere else in iPhoto or on my computer? Thanks!

    several issues with your question
1 - there is no such thing as a smart folder in iPhoto
2 - folders in iPhoto can not hold photos and it is not possile to import photos into them
3 - there are smart albums - deleting a smart album has no effect on the photos - the "contents" of the smart album are simply pointers to the photos in your library that meet the criteria - deleting the album has no effect on the photos themselves
4 - as the contents of a smart album is the photos that meets the criteria it is no possible to import photo into a smart album
5 - it is helpful to know what version of iPhoto you have
So please ask with correct terms since we can not see you or your computer and can only help based on wha tyou tell us

  • Address Book Server & Smart Groups

Do these two even work together?
We are running OS X Snow Leopard Server and Address Book.  Clients can see the records as expected.
But clients that create Smart Groups can't use them with records on the server.  You can create a Smart Group, and it will show the desired records in the "Name" column, but no other clients see the Smart Group on their versions of Address Book.  And when you try and print a Smart Group, no records show up.
It looks like regular groups work, but smart groups don't?  Is this correct?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I have similar problem with Mawerkicks. Did you find some solution since you posted your question in 2011?

  • How can I change the fonts in my address book? I'd like to change them to make fun mailing labels.

How can I change fonts in my address book so I can print clever mailing labels?

Hello, I think you'll have to Export them & use another Application...
How to Export Your Mac OS X Mail Address Book Contacts to a CSV File...
Export Your Mac OS X Mail Address Book Contacts to a CSV File
To save your contacts from the Mac OS X Address Book to a CSV (comma-separated values) file, which lets you import the data to many other address books:
    Download and install AB2CSV.
    Open AB2CSV.
Select Mode | CSV from the menu.To configure which fields will be exported, you can select AB2CSV | Preferences… from the menu and go to the CSV tab.
Now select File | Export from the menu.
    Go to your Documents folder.
    Click Choose.
The exported address book contacts are saved to a file called "everyone.csv" in your Documents folder.

    Might look into NeoOffice...

    And most likely MS Office.

  • Address book not showing up in iPhoto Email

Anyone know why my address book isn't showing up in the email function in iPhoto? When I start typing a name in the "to" field, the name should pop up from my address book like in Mail, but it's not. I've restarted my computer and repaired disk permissions...
    Thanks!

It works for me as it should. Delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto try try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • Smart Folder Bug: Iphoto fails to match using 'filename' filter

Hi, this issue has popped up here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6008267
    and here:
    http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22401
though I've yet to find an answer.
    Briefly, the problem:
When using a smart album with a 'filename' filter, iphoto fails to produce a match when it should. Interestingly, I have some of my photo's included from their current location (simply a folder structure on my mac) and others imported directly into iphoto, so are directly in the library. Now, those photo's that are included from their current location are correctly indexed, and the smart folder provides correct matches (e.g. all filenames that contain '.jpg'). However, none of the photo's that reside in iphoto's own library are present with the example filter above.
I'm not sure how much this topic has been bashed, but this is definitely an iphoto issue, and an irritating one! (Yep, I've rebuilt the library too)
    Thoughts?

    Tom
    Thoughts?
    Here's one:
I have some of my photo's included from their current location (simply a folder structure on my mac) and others imported directly into iphoto, so are directly in the library.
Running a mixed library, where iPhoto is managing some of the files and you are managing the others, is a recipe for data loss. When there's complexity in managing the data, mistakes will occur.
That said: this could be a damaged db file.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Address Book - smart folder - need to delete

I have created a smart folder that for some reson lock up my Address Book when ever I click on it (applicaton not responding and have to force quit).  How can I delete the the smart folder in question.  If I click on it the program immediately freezes.
I do have several days of time machine backups I could retore from.  I am also synced to mobil me and my iphone.
What and where is the file I would need to replace to remove the last added smart folder?
    Thanks,

    You might want to try:
Back up your address book (File -> Export)
    exiting the Address Book
Going to your Library/Application Support/AddressBook directory (in Finder, Go -> Go to folder -> ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
Moving the AddressBook-v22 to your desktop
    Open the Metadata directory
Use the finder's search feature to search in that directory for "Group"
You should find files with names that contain "ABSmartGroup" - move these to your desktop
    Restart Address Book
That should remove them, but don't hold me to it (make sure you have backups).  This is more mucking with the Address Book than I'd like to do.  If the Address Book starts acting weird, you can move these files back to the original location.

  • Why Address Book Smart Group Doesn't Work?

I'm unable to find a solution to, or explination for, the following problem with Address Book and Smart Folders.
I added a custom date field for my contacts.
Set the date for one year and five days ago.
    Created Smart folder with condition:
custom date 'is not within' one year.
Well, my contact I created with custom date of one year and five days ago did not appear in the smart group I created.
But it does appear in a smart group with condition 'is within' one month.
Seems that the Smart Group is ignoring the year. Doesn't seem very smart to me, lol.
Any advice on what is going on, or how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. I've spent hours looking for answers online and haven't found anything. Thanks in advance for your help.
tags: date field, date conditions, errors, problems,

    Hi The Zack,
In case you think you are crazy, I can confirm that in this area you are not. I just switched from years of PC drudgery to the the new Mac religion. I even switched all my email/address/calendar stuff to pure Apple. Some bumps and hiccups, but still I guess the real test is when I log back onto my old PC I feel like I am watching a rerun of a black and white sitcom.
I digress. On of my hiccups is exactly the same as yours. Address Book is always able to search. It seems a good number of the names in my address book can not be found by typing in any part of their information in the search box. I could not fix this by duplicating the address entry, but I could get it work by hand typing in a new duplicate address entry. I am hoping you and Barry discover a cleaner solution to this.
    Thx, Kmon23

  • Address Book freezing with Smart Groups - how to delete them?

    Hi guys,
I made some Smart Groups in AB to get ready for iPhone 3G, and one of them has another smart group as a criterion – Address Book really doesn't like this, and freezes every time I try to click on that group. That's fine, I just want to delete, but you have to actually have a group selected in Address Book to get the contextual delete menu, and of course AB freezes before I can get there.
My question: is there a .plist somewhere I can edit to clear out these two groups, or any other ideas on how to delete these two groups that crash Address Book? Thanks!

quit mail and address book and go to the directory homedirectory/Library/Application support/Address Book.
delete the file AddressBook-v22.abcddb. then go to the subfolder Metadata and delete the group cards for the smart groups in question. To quickly find them search for "groups" in that folder. when you start address book, those smart groups should be gone.

  • Address Book Images Folder = 3 gigs and 30,000 files

Can anyone tell me why Address Book's images folder (Library/Application Support/Address Book/Images) gets to take up 3 gigs of space and contain more than 30,000 files? I like to have photos for people and companies in my address book, but I can't imagine why an address book with 354 cards would have a supporting images folder that friggin huge. Is this just bad programming on Apple's part? Using Quicklook, I can see that there are several images that are duplicated with different file names. What actions generate these duplicates? Is there a way to clean up this folder without completely dumping the contents?

    HI Paul,
There's no way that is right.
Your profile indicates you are running 10.4.8 but you posted in the 10.6 Snow Leopard forum? If you have updated to 10.6 please click My Settings on the right side of this page and update your profile. Thanks. (iMac G5... PowerPC)?
Unless you have copy/pasted information for Address Book and contact information from the internet or e-mail, that's the only way I can think that could happen.
I don't see why you can't delete those images if they aren't in use.
If you are running 10.4, try installing the 10.4.11 combo update.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eppc.html
As with any update, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Address Book just disappeared like that

I realize lost address books is a consistent topic. A number of apps were open: Photoshop, Word, Safari, iCal and my Address Book. I went away for 40 minutes, came back and it was necessary to Force Quit all the programs. Address Book could be seen with addresses but after Force Quit ALL the addresses disappeared. Does anyone have a thought or idea as to where?

    Welcome to the discussions, jfulton.
The simplest is to restore from your backup. Otherwise:
    Quit Address Book.
In folder ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook drag file AddressBook.data to the desktop. Rename AddressBook.data.previous to AddressBook.data and restart AB. If your contacts are not back quit AB again and repeat the drag/rename process, this time with AddressBook.data.beforesave.
If you get your contacts back, now is probably a good time to use the AB menu item File/Back up Address Book.
I would be a bit worried about all your open applications having frozen. You should run through the various checks here.

  • Address book smart groups not syncing

I'm using a 3G iPhone, Macbook Pro and MobileMe. Everything is pretty much working ok, except my Address Book's smart groups don't sync to MobileMe.
My standard (non-smart) contact groups - the ones created with the + button on the bottom-left of Address Book - sync just fine, but smart groups don't. This is a real nuisance as I rely on smart groups to keep track of certain sets of contacts. Anybody got any ideas please?

Sorry to nudge, but anyone any thoughts on this?

  • How to access address book that is not on startup drive

I have an external hard drive that is from an old computer of mine. How do I access the address book on that drive without making it my startup drive first?
    Thanks.

    easy on all caps there
you can do the following to combine address books. start Address book, select all the contacts currently in your address book and drag them to the desktop. that will create one big vcard with those contacts. then quit address book and replace the folder that I told you about with the one from the backup drive. start address book. it will look like it did on the backup drive. drop the vcard you have on the desktop onto the address book. the addresses will be imported.
warning: this procedure will migrate all addresses but will destroy any groups and smart groups you currently have in AB.
