Enlargements out of Lightroom

How good is Lightroom at maintaining quality when enlargements are made via the export function.
e.g. if you have a picture say 3000 x 4000 pixels & enlarge to 4500 x 6000 via not ticking the do not enlarge tick box on export.
How does ity compare to Photoshop enlargements say using bicubic & the 110% staged enlargement method, or even Genuine Fractals.

It uses the Lanczos kernel, which is pretty decent. Probably as good as bicubic smoother, better than the 110% jumps method.

  • Cannot Use Camera Raw out of LightRoom 4

Below is a lengthy dialogue that I just had with Tech Support via Chat regarding accessing Camera Raw directly out of LightRoom 4.  The end result is that it can't be done.  LightRoom 4 has it's own "Develop" section and if you try to "Edit in: PhotoShop 6" the RAW image will bypass Camera Raw and open directly into PhotoShop.  Something that I was surprised at and frustrated by.  I thought for sure I was missing somehting.
I do not recommend buying LightRoom other than a means of "organizing" our images.  I simply use Bridgne and am able to open a Canon "CR2" Raw file directly into Camera Raw and then after making my adjustments directly into PhotoShop.  LightRoom lacks Layers, Paths and Channels and a host of other wonderful adjustment / manipulation capabilites not found in LightRoom.
So, if you are like me and want to use Camera Raw prior to going to PhotoShop then LightRoom will not get you there.  I spent a tremendous amount of time researching it thinking I must be missing something and then I contacted Support via Chat and we went through changing %AppData%, which only resulted in me losing all my PhotoShop Preferences!  A total waste of the Technician's time and mine.
I share the below chat with you only to show you the ludicrous amount of time wasted when the answer remains the same:  YOU CANNOT ACCESS CAMERA RAW DIRECTLY OUT OF LIGHTROOM 4
Thank you for choosing Adobe. A representative will be with you shortly. Your estimated wait time is 0 minute(s) and 3 second(s) or longer as there are 1 customer(s) in line ahead of you.
You are now chatting with 'Soumyadeep'
Soumyadeep: Hello. Welcome to Adobe Technical Support.
    Soumyadeep: Hi Fred!
Fred: Hi there my friend. I am trying to use Lightroom 4, but frankly am not happy with the way it handles RAW files.
Fred: I cannot open a Canon ".cr2" RAW file directly into Camera Raw from LightRoom.
Soumyadeep: I have received your query. Please allow me a moment to verify your account and to review the details of your request.
Fred: Thanks. I have also gone through all of the information I can find in the "Help Menu" looking up everything. Can't find a thing on LightRoom 4. I did not have this problem with Lightroom 3.
Fred: The RAW file that it references is "DNG".
Soumyadeep: I understand that you are unable to preview cr2 raw images in Lightroom 4, am I correct?
Fred: No, I can preview it, but when i want to open it the only choice I am given is CS6. I cannot open it into Camera Raw and it actually choses a completely different and inappropriate plug in from NIK Software.
    Soumyadeep: Thank you for confirming.
Fred: I know I can change that in the "Prefernces" in Lightroom 4 but I can't find Camera Raw to select as the choice.
Soumyadeep: I will be glad to assist you with this.
Soumyadeep: May I have the serial number of the product please?
Fred: I just checked again and it is set to a NIK Software plugin as an external software to open the file.
Fred: Yes, let me get it for you.

Soumyadeep: Fred, I have locate the serial number in your Adobe account.
Soumyadeep: Once you login to the Adobe account, click on "My products" under the "My products and services".
Soumyadeep: There you can locate the serial number which you have registered.
Fred: OK, so you don't need it now. It isn't in a format that I can copy and paste.
    Fred: 116040070815784336099081
Soumyadeep: Since it was registered in your Adobe account we can get the information from there.
Soumyadeep: Thank you for the serial number.
Soumyadeep: Fred, I would like to inform you that all the raw edit options you will get in Lightroom develop module.
Fred: I hope I copied it correctly it is presented so small.
    Fred: OK, just a second.
Fred: So, I go to "Develop" it will open in Camera Raw 7.01?
Fred: Frankly, this is the reason that I have just been using Bridge is because of the seemingly lack of coherent connection between LightRoom 4 and PhotoShop CS6.
Soumyadeep: I would like to inform you that you will not have any separate camera raw plugins for Lightroom. Since Lightroom will not require a camera raw converter.
Fred: At least I can open into Camera Raw and make the necessary adjustments and it will load in to PhotoShop.
Fred: OK, then why when opening a "RAW" image out of LightRoom does it go directly to CS6 bypassing Camera Raw?
Fred: Not allowing all of the wonderful adjustment toos, particularly the new ones in Camera Raw. I just don't understand the disconnect.
Soumyadeep: Fred, may I know which product you are referring as  "CS6"?
Fred: If I had wanted to process all my images in LightRoom I would not have wasted my money on CS6. Does that make sense?
    Fred: PhotoShop CS6
    Fred: Or PhotoShop 6 Extended
Soumyadeep: Thank you for the information.
Fred: The question still remains "Why does LightRoom 4 only recongize DNG files and not other RAW file formats and not allow them to be opened into Camera Raw?"
Fred: I don't want to process my images in LightRoom 4. I want to catalog and sort them. I want to process the RAW files from Canon in Camera Raw and then move on to PhotoShop 6 Extended.
Fred: So, what you are telling me is that I can't open a RAW file in LightRoom into Camera Raw. Simply stated.
Soumyadeep: Fred, I can understand your concern. Lightroom will not require a camera raw converter.
Soumyadeep: May I have the name of the camera model you are referring?
Fred: Two camera models: EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 60D
Soumyadeep: Please so that I can check further and try to troubleshoot your issue.
Soumyadeep: .Thank you for the information.
Fred: Both are listed as supported by Adobe PhotoShop and Camera Raw. I found that in my research.
    Soumyadeep: Okay.
Soumyadeep: Please close all the Adobe applications.
Fred: I simply want to go from LightRoom 4 directly to Camera Raw 7.01 and then onto PhotoShop 6 Extended. Seems pretty straight forward and logical to me. Then again I'm not Adobe.
Fred: OK, just a moment and I'll do that.
    Soumyadeep: Click on Start.
Soumyadeep: Fred, may I know what operating system you are using?
Fred: I am working on Windows 7 64 bit operating system.
Fred: I have closed all applications from Adobe.
Soumyadeep: Thank you for the information.
    Soumyadeep: Click on Start.
Soumyadeep: Just type %Appdata% in the search box and hit the enter key.
Fred: Ok, Im pretty computer savy so just tell me where you want to go.
Soumyadeep: Double click on Adobe folder.
    Fred: Done
Soumyadeep: In that folder you will have a folder CameraRaw. Please rename the folder as CameraRawold.
    Fred: Done
Soumyadeep: In that folder you will have a folder Adobe Photoshop CS6. Please rename the folder as Adobe Photoshop CS6old
Soumyadeep: After renaming the images please close the page and try to open a raw file and let me know the exact result.
    Fred: Done
Fred: Just a moment. I have renamed CameraRawold and Adobe6Old. i am going to navigate to my external drive and click on a RAW File
    Soumyadeep: Okay.
Soumyadeep: Let me know the status.
Fred: It is opening PhotoShop 6 Extended.
Fred: I can change the properties of the file to open in another program if that is where we are going.
Fred: It also created an error that stated that it recognized graphic software that is not completely supported and PhotoShop is not opening normally.
Fred: Given a little more time it opened in Camera Raw.
Soumyadeep: Fred, once more step you need to perform as you got an error regarding graphic software.
Soumyadeep: Please try to work on the Camera Raw and let me know it is working fine or not.
Fred: And I lost my presets.
Fred: OK, where does this leave us?
Fred: With regards to LightRoom 4?
Soumyadeep: Fred, you wanted to open the raw images in Camera raw option instead of Photoshop CS6, right?
Fred: Camera Raw appears to be functiong fine.
    Soumyadeep: Great!
Soumyadeep: Please close all the Adobe application.
Soumyadeep: Re launch Photoshop and type CNTRL+ K.
Soumyadeep: Let me know once you are done.
Fred: Checking the "CR2" files out of Canon the dafault to open is with PhotoShop 6
Fred: Ok, let me close all of them.
    Fred: OK, closed sir.
Soumyadeep: Please navigate to Performance tab.
Fred: "Performance Tab" in what program?
Soumyadeep: Re launch Photoshop and type CNTRL+ K
Soumyadeep: A new window will pop up "Preference"
Fred: Just a second it is opening. Thanks for help.
Fred: I am now at the Prefernces box. Performance Tab
    Soumyadeep: You are welcome.
    Soumyadeep: Correct.
    Fred: OK, I'm in Preferences
Soumyadeep: Please let me know Use Graphics Processor is checked or unchecked.
Fred: It is checked. I do know that on this machine that the graphics processor is not fully supported due to a lack of a separte video card.
Soumyadeep: Okay. Please do check once that the graphic drives are updated or not.
Soumyadeep: Fred, I hope now your are able to open the raw images in camera raw as you were referring?
Fred: Just a second. Driver software is up to date.
Fred: Let me open LightRoom 4 and see where it goes. Just a second.
    Soumyadeep: Sure.
Fred: Lightroom is taking a long time to open now.
Fred: Now I'm getting the message that it is not responding.
Fred: OK, it finally opened. Just a second.
    Soumyadeep: Okay.
Soumyadeep: Please let me know the result.
Fred: In light room when I select "Edit In PhotoShop 6" it is going directly to Photoshop 6 and not opening Camera Raw. Still.
Fred: So, my friend. We are still back to the original question and now I have to reload all of my preferences lost due to the change in AppData. LOL!
Fred: I guess I can organize all I ant in LightRoom and still use Bridge to edit and work on my images.
Fred: Sorry! Organize all I want and still edit out of Bridge.
Soumyadeep: Fred, I am sorry to inform you that when you will open the images from Lightroom it will not require the camera raw and also when you will try to open the images in other software from Lightroom it will directly open in that software. Since Lightroom itself works as a Came

Jim, thank you for an excellent responce.  I truthfully had researched the "Help" section on LightRoom and PhotoShop and found nothing that even remotely resembled your straight forward and easy to follow directions.  After upgrading to CS6 and LightRoom 4 I am delighted with all of the new features that Adobe created in PhotoShop.  I'm not sure that LightRoom 4 was as great an advancement as PhotoShop itself.
I am certainly going to give your solution a try and see how it works out for me.   I concur that I probably do not fully understand and appreciate the relationship between the two programs.  Today was my attempt of gaining a better insight to that relationship.  Thank you for your response!

  • Issues exporting out of lightroom 4

I've recently encounterd a problem while trying to export images out of Lightroom 4.  I keep getting an error messge "File canot be written."  This is happening whether I'm exporting a Jpeg or a raw file.   Cannot figure what has happend but it's doing it with old and new files, so it's not an issue of a corrupted file.  Anyone have any experience with this particular issue?
    Dan

The message tends to indicate an issue with the destination drive. Have you checked there's adequate free space? Have you checked write permissions? Have you tried alternative destinations for the exports?

  • No thumbnails in finder/preview after exporting files as dng out of lightroom?

Does anyone have experience sorting out the issue of no thumbnails in finder/preview after exporting files as dng out of lightroom?
There are several conversations in the forum about this problem, but cant seem to find a solution.
Anyone know how to sort this out?

    Thanks for your reply.
Mac does support previewing dngs in finder and preview. This has not been a problem before (besides when using my fujufilm compact camera, which mac now has updated the Apple camera for).
To answer your Q about dng files. Thats exactly what i do. I have work which involves communicating/transfering multiple lr -edited files to someone else whom further edits in ps. Not only that, I personally use dng as a way of storing my files. I suppose like to keep my files tidy and uniform.
Any mac users out there who has a a solution to my issue with previewing dngs?

  • When exporting out of lightroom the color of my picture channges significantly

I use windows 8 and tried exporting out of lightroom through firefox and this did not help either

Hi Shmuglak.  Thank you for the information.  I tried those things but did not work.    I just got windows 8 and just downloaded photoshop CC and Lightroom from the cloud.   My settings in Lightroom under preferences are :   Under jpeg preview it is checked on fast load data.   Under external editing the color space is prophoto.   Under additional external editor it is set to preset (Custom).  Under Default Develop Settings the only thing checked is apply auto mix when first converting to BW.   Under export module:   Location:   set to same as original folder and no check mark on add to catalog.   Under Post Processing I have tried do nothing and tried firefox.
It is funny that when I export a picture from lightroom using firefox that picture  pops for preview and the picture looks fine but then when I go to my email and try to email that same picture and use send with a file attachment the picture looks aweful on my desktop but when looking at it on the ipad or iphone the picture looks fine.
Any other suggestions would be great
    thank you

I don't know if this is your case but I have a similar problem (and has been helped out by some kind soul on this forum). The change of color may happen if you are re-importing the exported pictures into the Lightroom catalog. If this is what you are doing, some import presets may be applied and this may cause the color change. I'm talking about this setting, sheck if it is enabled. If it is, disable it and see if it helps.

Is there a bug or problem with increased noise when exporting pictures out of Lightroom 4?

As you are asking about it, looks like you do see a problem. So if googling does not provide a solution, you should describe the issue in detail so we can try to help out.

  • Why are my photos desaturated when I export out of Lightroom 5 and editing with VSCO Film filters?

I have been excited working with VSCO Film presets, however when I apply them and go to export out of Lightroom 5 on my Windows 8 computer, my images are previewing very desaturated and muted in color. Some images are below. I thought it was a Color SPace issue, but when exported as sRGB as well as in its original space of Adobe RGB1998 it is still desaturated. Any help?? In Lightroom the colors are right, but my preview application is different.
    Thank you!

    Hi ssprengel,
    Here's some clarification:
Here's a screenshot of my raw image in lightroom without any presets:
Here is a screenshot of my raw image with the presets (the way I want it to look upon export):
Here is a of the jpeg exported out of LR:
(on my screen the jpg looks like what it should when I attach it, but I know once I post this it will not look like it. That's something I noticed when I posted my question previously)
I took you suggestion and re-imported the sRGB exported JPEG and it looks like how it is supposed to be with the correct saturation. Here's a screenshot of the jpeg reimported.
Here is a screenshot comparing the LR5 preview to the Photos preview on Windows 8. The LR5 (left) is more saturated, the correct way I want it:
I cannot use Windows Photo Viewer because this is how my photos look like in it:
Hope this all makes sense! Thank you so much in advance!

  • Images imported from Aperture showing up 'washed out' in Lightroom.

I am aware that Lightroom uses ProPhoto RBG. When i export images from Aperture to a folder then import into Lightroom the images appear very different. Is there a setting i am missing as the images seem 'washed' out in Lightroom. When i export to the desktop and open in Photoshop they look the same as in Aperture. After i import to Lightroom and open in Photoshop they still look washed out.
New to Lightroom and trying to find the right alternative to Aperture.
    Many Thanks in advance.

You are probably right, it is an issue with color profiles and gamut.  Aperture does use a different raw converter, which will create some variance.  In fact, many like the look of straight Aperture raw conversions over straight ACR conversions.  But if the washed out look is dramatic, and Photoshop opens your raw files okay, then it must be a profile issue.
It may help to explain how you are exporting from Aperture.  Are your source files raw files, PSDs, TIFFs, or JPEGs?   Are you exporting masters, or are you exporting versions?  If you're exporting versions, take a look at your "source preset" when exporting.  What color profile are you embedding?
Although if you are embedding any color profile, Photoshop and Lightroom should pick it up.
All I've read is that Lightroom manages profiles more transparently than Photoshop, but perhaps someone could jump in here and say how it is managed.
Finally, what purpose are you exporting and importing into Lightroom?  If you're migrating your library to a Lightroom catalog, you may be best served by using the Aperture migration plug-in.
    Aperture import plugin now available
The plug-in still has issues with foreign characters, importing all previews, and face keywording and keywording previews.  You'll be better off waiting until these issues are fixed.  Even if you can't, the plug-in would still be a better option than a manual attempt, unless you're doing something other than migrating your Aperture library.

  • HDR Pro grayed out in Lightroom

The "Edit in" HDR pro is grayed out in Lightroom 5.  I read that the File form had to be tiff not PSD, so I changed that in preferences to no avail.  I am a creative cloud subscriper using Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CC, both of which were downloaded from the cloud.  What am I doing wrong?

OK, sounds like some kind of odd glitch where LR isn't interfacing properly with PS. I only mentioned the Nik plugins because of the previous post by Jim, who got the impression you were using them (I guess because they have an application that's called HDR Efex Pro).
I sometimes read about this kind of problem where LR & PS aren't "talking" to each other properly, and I believe that the usual solution is to uninstall both applications, then re-install PS and LR in that order. This way, LR should automatically become "aware" that PS CC is installed and available for it to interface with. Not the simplest solution of course, but note that uninstalling will not touch your LR catalogue or settings - you'll be able to get back and running pretty quickly. Of course, as you're using CC, you may need to do the uninstalling via the Adobe Application Manager (or whatever it's called) - I've opted not to go down the subscription route, so I can't comment on that side of things. Before you try the uninstall method, you could always just see if deleting your LR preferences file might fix this...
Anyway, hope that's of some help.

  • Photos washed out in Lightroom

Hi - I relatively new to color management and am struggling with Lightroom. I'm shooting raw images on a 40D and bringing them into lightroom converting to DNG. I've recently upgraded my computer and am running Vista. I've calibrated my monitor with Huey Pro.
My issue seems to be with Lightroom. On the screen, in both library and develop, they are washed out and dull. When I print them or upload them to the web, they are darker than on the screen. I have downloaded the icc profiles and the print result is the same whether I have Lightroom or the Printer manage color.
When I export my photo to Elements 6 ((PSD,ProPhoto RGB, 16 bits) and apply the auto lighting and color adjustment, my picture brightens up and looks great. Printing from elements is really close to what I see on the screen and is where I want it to be.
When I save the adjusted photo back to lightroom, it reverts to its previous washed out version!
I've been using lightroom for a year or so without these issues so something seems to have changed! Anybody have any ideas that might help?

What color space are you working in with PE?
Usually, when photos appear dull in LR, it's because you've made little or no adjustments to them, and are comparing them to out of camera JPEGs. The latter have been boosted, sharpened, and more by the in camera software.
Another reason they may look poor on your web browser or other Windows apps is they aren't color managed. Be sure to Export in sRGB space to get the best match with outside applications.
Be sure your monitor is set to your calibrated profile, and it sounds as though more attention might be paid to its Gamma.

  • Colors washed out in lightroom but not after export

I'm new to Lighroom and don't really have a workflow sorted out. I'm shooting with a Canon 30D and shooting Raw+Jpeg until I learn enough to confidently handle raw files. If I adjust the images in lightroom so that they don't appear lifeless and grey by adding lots of saturation, when I export to jpeg and then view with windows picture viewer to see what the images would look like on Zenfolio in SRGB they are grossly over saturated and clownish. My monitor(Dell 2005FPW) is not calibrated with a calibrator but I am using the adobe prophoto icc profile in an effort to have some color management as I understand that is what Lightroom/CS3 uses. I'm not printing yet but hope to some day, for now I'd just like to upload some photo's to Zenfolio and share with friends and family but as it sits Lightroom is totally unusable as I have to guess what it will look like after export. I'm certain it's something I'm doing wrong or missing and I'm hoping someone can tell me what that is. Thanks in advance, Veet

Thanks for all the replies, I was beginning to think I was on my own,I'm very happy this thread finally came to life. I did use an adobe Monitor profile (Prophoto) as I thought that was the color space used by LR and had read in some other thread that I should use it. I tried using my supplied profile (2005fpw.icm) and I get an error message from Photoshop stating "The Monitor profile"Dell 2005FPW color profile" appears to be defective please rerun your monitors calibration software. I then have the option to ignore the profile or to use it anyways. I actually stumbled accross the huelight ACR's and tried them out but that didn't help. Photoshop has the same bland lifeless look as LR does. I d/l a trial of Elements 5 and it was also the same so it's adobe across the board. Color space and color management are totally new concepts for me
so I'm really at a disadvantage trying to trouble shoot this, I can bandy these terms about, but I suspect I don't really grok them fully as of yet. I'll be happy when I finally get my monitor calibrated, I understand now that it won't be a magic "fix all" :( but at least I'll have a solid point to begin building a color managed system. Other Raw converters don't seem to have this problem but as I am just now developing my workflow I'd like to master one program and I think I'd like that to be LR as it seems to be the one that encompasses the entire workflow ie. rating, cataloging, flagging ect. and I feel it would probably mesh best with Photoshop which I also plan to learn/use. I'm feeling pretty stuck and not very inspired to shoot atm as the exposures just keep piling up and aren't being integrated or dealt with appropriately. I don't have auto tone checked off and I'll see if I can track down an updated driver/profile for my monitor, one which isn't "defective" as Adobe puts it. Thank you for all the replies, I will get this resolved eventually and any help you guys can give me is more than appreciated.
A few questions should I shoot Adobe RBG or SRGB from the camera and does it matter for RAW? My understanding was that in order to use 16 bit I needed to be in AdobeRBG.
Which profile should I use for photoshop? as I can set the color space in it
After I calibrate my monitor will I be able to use that profile for the various pieces of software I'll be using?
I think I have Color Profile and Color Space meshed in my mind and thats probably very wrong. Thanks, Veet

  • How do I undo locking myself out of Lightroom 4?

I was trying to figure out how to export pictures to a flashdrive and not disturb Lightroom 4.  Now I'm locked out.  Computer shows:  Lightroom 4 Catalog.Ircat-journal  and Lightroom 4 Catalog,Ircat.lock.  Lightroom 4 shows files as offline or missing.  How do I get them back to work with them?

You'd need to ask in the Lightroom Forum
The lightroom Trial comes with Reader for MAc, but it's aspearate application altogether.

  • All 'edit in' options greyed out in Lightroom 5.6 in combination with PS CC, last night it worked fine, what has happened?

    Hi,
Last night the 'edit in' link between Lightroom 5.6 and Photoshop CC on MacOS 10.9.5 was working fine. This morning it is greyed out. Does anyone have a clue what might have happened? I did get a notice to say that my license would expire in 6 days (when I'll renew again), so what gives?
Thanks for considering this, it has flummoxed me.

  • Read the trim in and outs from Lightroom 4

    Hi guys
I may want to use the lightroom 4 for organizing my videos, and I think it is nice to drag and drop from the grid view in LR to Premiere.
Though when I set an in and out point in Lightroom the Premiere (or Bridge) will not read these settings and just use the full clip.
Any way to get this to work without the need to export the clips first?
    All the best

    Welcome to the forum.
There is no way, that I know of, to transfer In & Out Points from any other program, to PrPro. If there is, and someone shares it, then we will both learn something new.
PrPro is a non-destructive editor, so it only reads data from the original files, and then writes instructions on how to use/process that data. It does not contain any of the original Source Files.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
