  • Thinking about getting a new iMac to use as the main computer.  Has anyone done this?  What is your experience and recommendations?

We have a 2009 MBP, 2010 MBP, 2011 MBA, an IPAD 2, and several ipods.  Currently, my 2009 MBP is the main computer, holding all the music and pictures.  This has used up the majority of the available storage and definitely slows it down some.  I do back up the full computer to a backup drive and also remove the large movie files to another external drive.  I'm thinking about getting a new iMac to use as the main computer.  Has anyone done this?  What is your experience and recommendations?
I look forward to all responses.
    Thanks,
    Brad

Thanks for your response.  I look forward to hopefully learning something new here.
A good share of my music was added via my CDs, but now everything is added via itunes and occasionally amazon.  Almost all my pictures and video are added through my cameras via iphoto although I have added some with the 'add image to iphoto library' function also.

  • Load balancing BSSV multiple instances - what is your experience?

    Hi,
we encountered an issue: we have three weblogic instances running BSSV Server instances for our JDE. THE BSSV instances are being communicated by SOA mostly and we would like to load balance the traffic between those three bssv servers. The problem is we need to use a certificate in order to load balance https.
The question is: has anyone of you performed such or similar operation before? What approach would you advise/recommend based on your experience? We will not use weblogic/webcache load balancing.
    Thanks.

I haven't found a specific JDE forum to have this question addressed by JDE. So, I will try to help from Weblogic Server perspective.
Is JDE installed in a SOA weblogic server environment?
If so you can follow SOA EDG which covers load balancing.

  • What is your experience transfering  sony HDR-HE3 HDV to Imovie5 DV

I just bought the new HDR-HE3 and am leaving for England in a few days. I do not have the time to do extensive testing and would like to find out about your experiences in transfering video captured in HDV to DV format in Imovie5. Does it work ? any editing problems ? How long was your video ?
I am trying to find out if I can safely capture HDV videos and transfer them to Imovie5 in DV format for the short term. I understand that i will have to redo them in HDV format when HDV DVD players become affordable.
Would it be better to take the videos in DV format and forget about HDV for the time being? After reading all the "horror stories" about Imovie6, I have decided to stick with Imovie5 for now. Your feedback will be appreciated.

    hello taronger,
i can't answer you on the camera issue 'cause i don't have an hdv camcorder
at this time, but have been using iMovie since version 2 with little or no problems although i use FCE as well.
all my fellow videographers have already switched to HDV and no one regretted so far ....i would say you made the right choice.
you could argue that it's better to work in DV as the DVD's and most TV's do not support HDV yet and i would have agreed but my colleagues have all assured me so far that it's much better to keep the HDV format throughout the entire process and then let iDVD make the downsizing....
the only reason there would be to capture SD is if your HDD runs low on space
good luck & viva la mela

  • What are your experiences in integrating Windows AD and Linux

I got into a job with a domain of about 70 Windows PCs and about 100 Linux machines.
The domains are quite old, and I mean Samba 4 and NIS old. Obviously one wants something newer, as in AD on the Windows side and Kerberos/LDAP on the Linux side. Preferably with a single user-database.
Question to the more experienced members:
    Should I go
    - Windows based and use something like an OpenLDAP Proxy for the Linux-LDAP
    or
    - Samba 4 based AD with the same
    or
    - Any of the above with Linux attributes added to the user entries in LDAP
What are thoughts and experiences on this? Especially is Samba 4 stable enough to be used in a production environment? What experiences with having Linux machines running in AD directly or via LDAP Proxy/Kerberos Proxy?

    1. Thsi contribution is not discussion, it is question. So better category is needed.
    2. Samba forum is better platform for topics llike Samba stability. Your infrastructure is much closer to Linux one.
    3. As you has landed in Windows Server forum, I would recommend using Windows Server 2012 R2. This is stable and reliable. Homogeneous infrastructure brings less headaches that hybrid one.

  • What's your experience been like of Lion on a 2008 white MacBook Core2Duo?

I decided to try out Lion on my MacBook (4,1) before taking the plunge with my iMac (11,1), the MacBook has 2GB RAM and was on Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  Installation was a snap - just purchased and downloaded from the App store then installed, no hitches, no difficulties.
It has been an interesting few weeks using it, some things I liked, somethings didn't really work very well at all on this MacBook.  Here are my personal unprofessional thoughts, some specific to the MacBook and some in general about Lion.
    Good -
    nice new default background (yes, I like the simple things in life!);
    simplified a few things but the old, more complex interfaces are still lurking in the background and easily accessible;
    App Store integration works well (though never really used it much in Snow Leopard, it's probably just the same);
    full screen Apps make good use of Spaces and look pretty;
with launchpad  it is nice to be able to see all of my Apps together on just one or two screens (easily swipeable with two-finger drag on the MacBook) without having to do all that scrolling.
    Bad -
    trackpad is seriously lacking for the multi-touch gestures that make Lion what it is, two-fingered dragging is about the limit on this MacBook so (in particular) switching between full-screen Apps is not the touchpad delight it should be;
    13-inch display doesn't really do Lion justice for Mission Control;
    widgets on their own Space?  What is the point?  I frequently need to be able to see the App I'm working with when I'm using Widgets;
    the full screen view seems to be hit-and-miss, Apple software seem to be the only ones that really make proper use of it so far, others only half-work in it (that I have tried, which isn't many);
    some 3rd-party software that is supposedly Lion compatible is not working correctly on this MacBook, while I understand that's not necessarily Apple's fault it is still a stumbling block;
some of the transitions and animations are not silky-smooth on the MacBook, while they are nice some things do suffer such as the folder pop-ups from the Dock (they worked better in Snow Leopard) which is sad because I am more likely to use this than Launchpad.
So, I think the Lion experiment must come to an end on my MacBook, in my opinion it's just not suitable for the way I like to use it.  I am considering a new MacBook Pro soon anyway, I'm sure that would be much better suited to Lion.  I will be wiping the MacBook and taking it back to Snow Leopard for now.  Perhaps I am not quite ready for Lion either, after all I am the most important component of any computer or operating system that I use.

Maybe, but I don't know if that's really the main sticking point.  I think Lion requires a different approach to how we use Mac OS, just as Windows 8 is putting different demands on it's desktop users who for many years have been used to the legacy way of doing things.  I need to upgrade myself!

  • SAP GUI 7.10 - What are your experiences?

    Hi All,
We are considering updating our GUI from 6.20 to 7.10.  Has anyone out there done this?  If so, did you come across any problems i.e. versions of Windows that it does not work on?
Has anyone used the GUI in a Citrix environment?  If so, was there a greater overhead on the servers?
Does the GUI have any compatibility issues with older versions of MS Office?
Any comments will be gratefully received.
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi
There are some points that are defined and you must have read these in the documents:
    a) *SAP web dynpro Active Component Framework (ACF)* - framework to integrate Active Components (ActiveX / Java Applets) into the Web dynpro.
At the present there are two supported Components:
              Office Integration
              Adobe Integration
    b)  BI pre calculation service for MS Excel u2013 you can install BI frontend as a standalone.
SAPSprint u2013 server-based printing on Windows (formerly SAPLPD)
SAP GUI Screen Reader Extension u2013 an interface allows a screen reader to access the SAP GUI object model at runtime and select the required information for speech and Braille output. It is based on SAP GUI Scripting API.
    c) In case GUI was installed from an installation server users have the possibility to enable automatic update from this server.
    d) System tabstrip of SAP Logon pad has a new popup window with tabstrips
    e) New frontend editor u2013  for ABAP programming. Is integrated to ABAP workbench (TA: SE*), SE38, SE37, SE24). Its new user interfaces and is completely customizable. Frontend editor integrates all modern code editing features like: code hints, code completion, .
    f) New debugger u2013 has a high volume of new and known functions that can be called using menus or icons. It requires an additional external session where it runs.
But there are some problems that we faced:
    a) Sometimes it happens that after installing this gui the Internet Explorer corrupts.
    b) Users faced some initial trouble to add the new systems in SAPGui as it is little bit complex.
    c) Some performance issues when used on low end desktops.
    d) But make sure to make a copy of *.xla file. It may give you problems.
But strangly when we installed for Citrix we were happy that we were out or any big problems.

  • What is your experience running Dreamweaver in a virtual/citrix/xenapp environment?

Does anyone have any  experiences running Dreamweaver on Citrix XenApp?  If so, has the user experience has been positive?  Is there anything you found during the installation process that we should be aware of?
Just looking for any feedback that would be helpful as we move forward in installing the trial version and testing it out.
    thank you.

Thanks guys this has been really helpful.
I got another identical server approved so I was wondering if the following specs will do if LOB applications are installed on the SharePoint Infrastructure in the future.
Virtual Machine 1: Web Server + App Server
    SharePoint Server:
    RAM: 25GB Processor: 64bits. 4-cores  Disk space: 160GB
    Virtual Machine 2:
    SQL
    RAM: 20GB Processor: 64bits,4-cores Disk space: 160GB
Would this be overkilling it or should I just increase the RAM to 25GB on the SharePoint Server and leave the SQL as 16Gb?
Just to give an idea the portal consists of 1 corporate site and about 8 departmental sites which is not the concern as the 16GB for SP and 16 GB would be fine (I would assume). I am however concern if the old specs would be okay when the LOB applications,
workflows, BI are installed in the future.
    Thanks again,
    AR.

  • 15" MBPr scroll lag: What are you experiences servicing this under AppleCare?

I'm one of the many suffering from the dreaded and well documented scroll lag. Have tried literally everything to fix this on my own, but have had no success. Using a tool like QuickRes to force non-HiDPI has helped; I've been using this band aid solution for well over a year now..
I have a 3 year AppleCare warranty.. What are your experiences with trying to get this serviced? I can't see this being a hardware issue, but then again, it very well could be. It doesn't look like any 13" MBPr's suffer from the same issues? I know it isn't typical for Apple to give out full replacements.. There's been users that have reportedly had up to 9 repairs / replacements, and this doesn't sound like something I'd want to go through.. Countless hours over the phone, at the Genius Bar, the wait times for repairs..
Is this issue directly related to the problems with the LG / Samsung displays? I can confirm I have a Samsung.

Ask for a new unit or a refund. Go for the fourth time or even the fifth. Its an expensive machine bought with hard earned money.

  • Overall working performance of fcpx - your experiences?

I work for a small production company on an instructional DVD project. I use FCPX 10.0.4 and with so many users around the globe I wonder if I am the only one having performance probems that really make my job hard to do.
I don't have the latest iMac at my disposal, but it is still a most decent end-of-2010 i7 QuadCore, 2.8 Ghz, with 8  Gb RAM and an ATI Radeon HD 4850. My project is on an external USB3 disk. My current project consists of 1920 x 1080p tracks, most single, some double (split screen), with separate audio track and some text blocks here and there. Nothing extraordinary.
Although I do get my job done, and I like the way FCPX works, I am extremely frustrated by the sloppy performance. In particular:
    - The spinning beach ball that appears at least twice a minute after simple tasks such as moving a clip holder
    - Clip holders that freeze half way if you reposition them
    - The long time it takes (up to a minute) to fill up the place holders with wave graphics, every time you zoom in or out
    - Sloppy playback, single video tracks just make it (most of the time), double tracks never do and skip more frames than are displayed
    - The fact that it often takes5 - 10 seconds before the clips starts after you press the space bar
    - Etc. etc.
The performance is also very irregular. Sometimes it works OK for a minute, then all of a sudden it starts to get sloppy again. or for some reasons it starts to load all my other projects even though I did not ask for it and basically stalls my entire Mac. All in all, there are so many waits all the time that I really have a hard time concentrating on my job. I tried to use proxy files, which is only a marginal improvement, whereas it takes ages to convert my clips to proxy clips so overall there is no time gain.
I cannot imagine that all of you guys are happily watching spinning beach balls all the time, so either 1. I am extremely demanding, 2. I need to buy a 100 Ghz PowerMac with 2Tb solid state disk or 3. something else is wrong.
All in all, the current performance of FCPX makes it unworkable, but since it is all they give me, I have no choice.
    What are your experiences?

I like the idea of a 100GHz PowerMac. I wonder if it would be hyperthreaded?
It sounds like the issue you are having might be due to your USB drive. For starters, USB3 isn't yet supported and isn't on your iMac. So, you should probably spring for an FW800 drive at the bare minimum, preferably something that's RAIDed.
I have a Mac Pro 3,1 8 core with 16GB RAM and a Radeon 5870 card. My experience in editing is fairly decent once I upgraded the graphics card. Not a lot of hiccups on playback. However, when I play out my Kona 3, I get lots of playback issues. I find that I need to be in Better Performance mode to get somewhat solid full FPS playback, which isn't always an issue for me.
So my workaround for that issue for now is to export the file and play it back out of FCP7 or Avid. Yep, you heard me.
The big performance issue I hit is that FCPX takes a very long time to render a timeline. I have had conversations with others about this and the general consensus is that X doesn't really want you to render everything out. But sometimes you just need to for solid playback and quicker export.
Other slowdowns for me are lots of niggling bugs and glitches in FCPX which slow down my workflow. Top of the list for me right now is an issue with using two monitors. If I do a matchback from the timeline, I don't get proper playback. I have to toggle between CMD-1 and CMD-2 to get it to work.
I get slow access to media when I'm importing footage and transcoding, but I don't find that too surprising. If I can spare the time, I just let FCPX do it's thing. Or I try to time it out so that it transcodes overnight.
    Hope that helps.

  • Memory (mis)management in Safari 2.03, your experiences

Seems to me that memory management has improved in this version.
I've haven't really closely monitored the memory footprint but right now, mine is at 104 megs. This is after I put it through some stress in the form of at most 5 windows and 3 tabs in one window at once. Plugins and java are disabled, javascript is left on.
In fact as I'm typing right now the memory has cycled back to 101 megs. Though I have a mere 2 windows open right now.
Closing tabs and windows seems to reclaim some memory but not always.
    What are your experiences?

    No performance seems fine.
I used to have performance issues in earlier versions. Yeah OS X can page out some of Safari's allocation to VM to make room for other applications but as soon as I went back to using Safari, all that "leaked" memory would be paged back in leading to some HD bottlenecking. I think the current version seems to performing much better.
I don't have any specific problem. I was just curious as to other people's experiences.

  • What is your Visio replacement on MAC?

    Hi,
If u use MAC for networking stuffs. What is your replacement for MS Visio? Running vmware fusion or some alternative MAC applications?
I mainly use visio to create/update network topology diagrams. I read couple of application introductions online claiming to be visio replacement on MAC, however:
    1. None of them say if the native visio stancil will work with them.
    2. None of them say about saving diagram to vsd/vsdx files
What do you use and what is your experience with replacement APP on MAC? Will MS ever release visio for mac?

There is a graph APP  called OmniGrafle for macs,  and like in visio , you need to look for stencils.  I started using this app resently so I am not fully familiar with its full capability in comparison with visio but it can do network diagrams . It is said is capable of importing visio  .vsd   in its newer versions.

  • What has been your experience upgrading from Mac OS X 10.6.0 to 10.7 or 10.8?  I read real horror stories about Maverick.

What has been your experience upgrading from Mac OS X 10.6.8 ti 10.7 or 10.8?

my story was indeed a horror story
Mavericks is not an upgrade of previous OSes, but rather a port of iOS
If you want your computer to function like an iPad, go for it.
Snow Leopard on the other hand is a full-featured and stable OS - the best of them in my opinion.
Mavericks makes it easier to port Pages and Numbers documents back and forth between your computer and your iPad - but this portability comes at the price of many, many lost features in both programs.  Over 100 lost features in Pages.  Don't know how many for Numbers, but because of lost functionality you risk losing data (if you used Footers and Headers, Page View, etc.).
It is possible to use the older version of iWork under Mavericks, but it is a real pain as Mavericks keeps trying to default you to the newer versions.  Even accidentally opening with the newer version and not saving changes can cause the file identifier to be altered making it no longer open under the older version (I did find a way to force open)  Deleting the newer versions from your system results in Mavericks nagging you on a daily basis to reinstall them.  There is no option to say No, only the option to postpone for one day.
the OS itself is much less customizable, I found it much harder to use with older eyesight because I couldn't highlight my scroll bars, or change the colour of certain files in a list, etc.  Anywhere I went to Preferences I was struck by how few of them there were - less than half as many as Snow Leopard, in some cases less than 25%.  Again, I had used those missing Preferences.
Mavericks also takes away many of the abilities of iTunes to sync with your iPad or iPhone and forces you to use iCloud to do much of the synching.  If you don't want to use iCloud, or if you have confidentiality issues that prevent you from using it - you are out of luck.
In the end I found Mavericks unusable.  The process of reverting back to Snow Leopard required 5 hours with 2 different geniuses at the Apple Store, 2 deep wipes of my computer and fresh install of Snow Leopard.    And some loss of settings and data.
If you choose to go for it, then make a bootable backup first.  Some sources suggest making 2 backups.
There are people who are happy with Mavericks, but I am not one of them.
Since I had my misadventure they have made some improvements to Mavericks, but not nearly enough of them to tempt me back.  For example, you cannot set your old Pages and Numbers documents to 'always open' with the older version of the software ... or rather you can set them to, but Mavericks will immediately revert it back to the new version.

  • PT 8.52 - Early adopters? What has been your experience with it in Prod?

After our HR upgrade to HR 9.1 and PT 8.51 in October, 2011, there is desire to turn around and do a Tools only upgrade to PT 8.52 this spring for various reasons (iPad tablet certification, etc). I remember a 2010 OpenWorld presentation where Oracle recommended that the "sweet spot" for go-live of a new Tools version was about 12-13 months after GA. I have found that advice to be sound in the real world as well.
What is the general vibe of PT 8.52 in Production? What have been your experiences with 8.52? If you are in Production, are you either HR, FSCM or CRM?
    Thanks,

Could someone please post or send the upgrade documentation you have followed?.
Or please, send me an URL to the upgrade documentation.
It appears that the upgrade documentation might not be complete and/or correct.
    The problem:_
Your upgrade environment has a psio_dir.dll from the previous/old PT850/PT851 install.
To validate this check out the size and the date stamp of the file. It will show the year as 2009 and the size as 48KB.
    THE FIX:_
Bring down your Application Server. Remove all the cache and log files.
Permanetntly REMOVE (not rename) the psio_dir.ll from *$PS_HOME/\bin\server\winx86\psio_dir.dll* from your PeopleSoft Application Server environment.
    Bring up your Application Server.
If you are a developer using/doing work using Application Designer, permanently remove <PS_HOME>\bin\client\winx86\psio_dir.dll from your Application Designer machine.
    This should fix your problem.
    thanks,
    Subbu
Note - I do not speak for Oracle. These comments are of my own.

  • What is your theory on what happened with ASUS Transformer Prime and BB?

    This is my theory:
    First preorder batch 11/22:
BB opened up for preorders based on expected date of anticipated 12/9 ship date.  The buyers at BB that orders from vendors did not buy any preorder stock from ASUS in Champagne on first order. I gotta bleive that the reason that the Champagne prime is not shipping from BB is a "buyer" error. They filled their first allotment of preorders. That is why BB shiped out grey from the first wave of preorders. Other vendors got both- why did BB only get grey? The buyers always think they know what we want or will order and only ordered grey in the request to ASUS. They got caught with their pants down when Amazon cancelled the orders on 12/2 and EVERYONE affected jumped on BB.com and ordered the champagne which was available as the next wave.
    Amazon fallout 12/2:
Best buy opened up another set of preorder allotment - 2nd wave, and got hit hard real fast with preorders that they were not prepared for, or had stock for.
ASUS is filling initial preorder requests from the resellers in the order that the resellers requested too.  BB was offering that in the next wave of preorders, but they probably took too many orders at once, and they put in another order to ASUS around the 12/9 delay ship date and ASUS was not taking them at that time (delays due to Wifi reported) .
ASUS 12/9 wifi report delay in shiping:
ASUS was cought in a delay with reports of wifi range problems and either stopped taking orders, or recallled/replaced shipment with others.  Once ASUS took orders again from the reseller they are shipping daily based on the preorder backlog. Asus is responsible for the delay in accepting orders from vendors, and BB had a buyer error, by either waiting too long to put in the first wave of orders, or not ordering enough, and now they are in the back of the vendor reseller line waiting on ASUS to get to them.
    12/19:
The date of irst ship came and BB shipped all it ordered from first wave and could not get anymore from ASUS in the second wave to cover the Amazon fallout system overload.  They were left in the back of the line of all other vendors becuse no reseller could get a second next wave fulfillment until all others got their first waves fulfilled.  The 12/9 delay kept next waves from being fulfilled, and that is why inventory is trickling into the other resellers and BB can only get a few more at a time.  BB ordered champagne on a next wave delay.
The thing that bugs me in to no end is how is a person that ordered grey on 11/28 at BB still on backorder, but a 12/05 grey order has shipped and delivered?? This is not ASUS fault, That is poor business operations on BB.
That is my "perfect storm" theory- what do you think?  What is your theory?

That is pretty close to what I think happened.
It does seem pretty clear that Best Buy never initially ordered and Champagne Primes.  I have combed through the threads at this site and others and haven’t seen one person receive a Champagne Prime from BB.  Meanwhile people who bought from other resellers like New Egg and Amazon have received Champagne Primes.
The mismanagement of shipping out orders chronologically has to be maddening for the people who ordered the Grey Primes.  I do feel for these people that ordered the same exact product before others who now have their Prime, but will still don’t have their items.
The communication from Best Buy had been terrible.  Screwing up the orders in the 2 examples are somewhat forgivable to me, but the miscommunication and what seems to be deceitfulness that Best Buy has exhibited is not.  They just seem not to care about the customer any more.  From my experience, prior to the release I was lead to believe my order would be ready to ship on 12/18.  Then it went on backorder with no real reason why.  Two (12/18 and 12/22) of three calls to customer service reps indicated that my Champagne Prime would still arrive by today (12/23), with the other call rep (12/20) saying she basically had no when my item would be in.  Then yesterday afternoon a post from a customer care rep on these boards confirming that I am basically hosed because I choose BB to fulfill my Prime preorder.
