iMac 3.8 Ghz Intel Core i7,
8 GB of RAM,
OS 10.8.4
2 TB internal with 1.4 TB available
Two WD external hard drives
No app Not Responding
No huge draw on CPU cycles
Permissions repaired
Disk defragged
AND YET, I open up a Word document (not just a specific one), or I start up an application, or I change a Calendar date...
And I get a Spinning Beach Ball for several seconds (a lifetime)
What gives!?!?
This is embarrassing.
This can't be right!

When you checked that, did you change Activity Monitor's "Show" option from its default of "My Processes" to "All Processes?"
If not, then you would not see where the big hitters in the over-eating of processor cycles reside.
If you did have AM thus set, then what you decribe sounds like you may have installed a third-party anti-virus/internet security software package or one of those awful "I'll clean you Mac" programs.
Try with the WD drives disconnected. WD bare drives are great but their enclosures are abysmal. I had one on both a PowerPC G4 tower and my i7 iMac and it dragged down the performance of the computer. I ripped open the cheap WD enclosure and installed the perfectly good bare drive in a enclosure from OWS and it works flawlessly without making my computer feel like its got syrup dripping inside.
I don't see an iMac with a 3.8Ghz i7 processor. What does "About this Mac" in your Apple menu say about your processor?
If there are no AV or cleaning apps installed and you comptuer is still in warranty, I'd think about making an appointment with the Apple Genius bar.

It is true that the only way to sync your Mac with iCloud is to upgrad. You need to be running OS X Lion 10.7.2 or higher in order to sync your Mac with iCloud. At this point, you can upgrade directly to OS X Mountain Lion from the version of OS X you are now running (10.6.8). Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?

Firefox thinks I don't have enough disk space, and cancels the download when it's almost finished.

So recently, I was downloading a pretty huge file for a game (4.5 gigabytes), and it was nearly finished, when an error popped up, saying that there wasn't enough disk space for Firefox to download the file. At the time, I had just enough disk space to download the file (yes, I checked and made sure). The download became unresumable, and I was incredibly irked to find I had to download again, as my download speed is not very good at all. I put it in overnight and made a note of where it stopped, and in the morning, when I checked it, it stopped in the EXACT SAME place, which is at about 4.1/4.5 GBs. I've made a lot more room since then, and I'm downloading it for the third time now. If this happens again, how can I solve this? Thanks.
Also, it's a .dat file. I have no idea if that has any bearing on what may cause this, but if anyone knows anything, please let me know.

The file system is a FAT32 Bootcamp Partition, and what baffles me is that I've been able to download and store files that are over 4 GBs before. And while I'm at it, why is it that you say FAT32 file-systems can't store files over 4 GBs? I've never heard of that happening before.

but it still gives me there error that "there is not enough memory or diskspace to run the grammar checker". Does not work in safe mode either nor do so I have the repair option from control panel.
I also renamed normal.dotm, and used ccleaner to clear all temp files..... Didn't work. Any ideas?

If you are using 64-bit Office, make sure you also use 64-bit bit Proofing Tools. Refer to this thread below and probably it may be the cause in your scenario:

Not enough memory of disk space in Word?

I am currently working on document in Word, it is only three pages long and has seven other photos in the document. When copy and pasting photos from iphoto I get the message that 'there is not enough memory or disk space to complete the operation.' What am I doing wrong? This didnt happen on my desktop Mac. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dreamweaver opens then I get the beach ball.

Dreamweaver CS6 on a Mac, Dual-Core Intel Xeon running Lion, 10.7.5.
I'm an occasional user of Dreamweaver CS6. In the last few days it has been playing up. DW will open the main screen with the welcome window and then show the beach ball.
If you wait long enough (30 minutes or more) the last job will open - but you can't touch it or do anything with it.
The force quit applications window shows DW alternating between responding and NOT responding. But at no point can I access anything with the mouse.
Following in the steps of others on the forum with a similar problem I looked in the console and found the following message:
23/10/2012 09:33:57.577 Dreamweaver: CFURLCreateWithString was passed this invalid URL string: '/System/Library/Frameworks/' (a file system path instead of an URL string). The URL created will not work with most file URL functions. CFURLCreateWithFileSystemPath or CFURLCreateWithFileSystemPathRelativeToBase should be used instead.
I have re-installed so many times now that I am certain this is of no benefit.
And I have created a new user account as suggested by Adobe and DW works fine there - then went back to my admin account.
For me the short cut is to boot up with shift-key held down which allows DW to open fully and work fine.
After doing this yesterday DW was fine, but today I open DW and get the beach ball again.
Clearly something is not right but I am at a total loss as to whether its a DW problem or and OSX problem.
Being an intermittent user of DW this is the first time I have had a problem with it.
I would therefore be most greatful if anyone can throw and envelope of light on this saga.

Thanks for your suggestion, although I haven't tried it I will keep a note of it just in case.
The reason I didn't try it is because not long after getting this issue with DW I noticed that some things weren't displaying with the usual fonts in Safari.
It would seem that somehow I have turned off some crucial fonts in Suitcase Fusion 4.
Having turned all local fonts back on again I have not experience the beach ball with DW.
But if it does happen I'll try your suggestion straight away.

I recently had my computer serviced. I re-downloaded Thunderbird (getting a newer version), and retrieved my saved email. Now, Thunderbird keeps asking me to compact, but when I do, I get this error message:

Obviously, since I'm getting mail all the time, I have write privileges, and disk space. The question is whether there's a setting I need to specify, or whether Thunderbird is writing to a special partition that may have gotten write-protected when my computer was in the hospital - or whether this is related to a known bug.
All help appreciated.

The only know bug I can see is probably your anti virus is trying to scan the file when the new inbox is created leaving Thunderbird to think the file was not created.
As an experimental / diagnostic process. Restart the machine in safe mode with networking using Microsoft instructions for [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7] then try the compact. If it works I was most likely right. If it does not, another idea must surface.

LR 5.5 upgrade. I only get the the 32 bit set up and an error when the 64 bit set up should be created. It says not enough disk space and no access to write. The disk space is ok and the 32 bit file was indeed created.

Hi Rob, Thanks for your input. The temp location is on the C drive with 228 GB free space. My other drives have 123 GB and 204 GB of free space. I can see how the 32 bit set up is perfectly extracted when it stops when coming to the 64 bit set up. I have done the exercise several times and also made new downloads. I am using Norton 360 and Malwarebytes anti-malware but the dowload from Adobe should be trusted.

I recently migrated from a Windows 7 installation to a Linux Mint 17 system.

I did give it time to run through everything when I initially migrated, and it frequently will sit open for 3 to 4 hours while I'm working on other projects.
The 'Generic Folder' represents sorting folders in my main mail account in Thunderbird. For example, my mail which is listed to filter into my 'Amazon' folder is sorted there with no problem, while any mail designated to be filtered into my 'Games' folder prompts the above error massage.

The sparse image article you sent a link to needs a little updating (or there's some variability in prompts (no password was required) with my OS and/or Disk Utility version), but it worked.
Phew! It would have been much more time consuming to use Time Machine to recover all my photos after repartitioning the drive.

I have this problem too, but my Inbox is empty. There are 125 emails waiting on the server, including one i just sent from another address.

I have now accessed the KB article above. None of the recommended actions made a difference. I deleted about half the 130 emails awaiting download from web-mail, but still got the same error. I can't clean out the inbox because I can't download emails yo it :-( I have 3 other addresses operating under the same server satisfactorily.

Yes - This is important.
Free Space - Must be on the Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk and can not be used on any other.
My safe level is a minimum of 25Gb free space - to let iDVD and Mac OS run OK.
This is due to that Mac OS X is in reality UNIX and there by needs lot's of temporary space for temp. files and so does the application iDVD. And this can not be addressed elsewhere.
So to free up space - one thing is to move iMovie Events to an external hard disk BUT THIS MUST BE DONE Right Else all can be lost ! !
• Never move or adjust any folders Named - iMovie Events or iMovie Projects - on Desktop/Finder - links will breake and can be hard to impossibly to heal. ALL movings must be done within iMovie Application (it goes for iMovie'08 to 11)
• External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange will NOT WORK FOR VIDEO - nearly everything else BUT NOT VIDEO.
