Ensure privacy when backing up multiple computers to same disk?

I have setup a NDAS disk in our office for a few of the MacBook users to backup to. The problem is that I can see others files and they can see mine, creating security issues. Is there a way to protect the folder to which only the computer backing up to the specific folder has access to see that folder while ensuring that Time Machine is still able to work properly?
On a side note I'm not worried about people whom are not registered to see thie disk as it's managed with NDAS software from Ximeta NetDISK (Purchased by IOCELL)as it has no IP address and you need a 16 digit key to see the drive and another 4 digit write key. This should wonderfully when IOCELL updates their NDAS software for Macs to have multiple write & read access.

the only way to do what you want is to enable filevault on your home directory.
that way your home directory will be stored in an encrypted sparse bundle and nobody will be able to open it (or its backups) without the password. however, filevault doesn't play nicely with TM so I'm not sure it's worth it. In particular, a filevaulted home directory is only backed up on logouts and you can not use TM interface to restore individual files, only the entire sparse bundle.

  • Deploy OS task sequence fails when deploying to multiple computers

    Hi gang,
I'm running into an issue when imaging multiple computers with MDT 2012. Let me give some background info.
I have installed Windows 7 64 bit on a laptop in audit mode, made my configurations, sysprepped the machine, and captured a .wim using WDS (captured to an external hard drive). I then imported this .wim into MDT, created a Standard Client Task Sequence to deploy
the image, and successfully deployed it to a machine.
My problem comes up when I initiate this task sequence on multiple computers simultaneously. If I put 6 computers side-by-side and run the task sequence at the same time, only a couple machines will actually succeed. The rest fail with the following:
    FAILURE ( 5624 ): 2: Run ImageX: /apply "\\CAAPPWN40\DeploymentShare$\Operating Systems\T731 (Final) Windows 7 64 bit May 2013\T731 (Final) Windows 7 64 bit May 2013.wim"

If I restart the computer, boot back into PXE, and run the task sequence again, this time on it's own (as opposed to 6 computers at once) it works fine.
    Can anyone help?

I just rebooted the server and tried again, same result.
I keep getting a "Body text cannot contain links or images until we are able to verify your account" error when posting a hyperlink. I've had my technet account since October... weird.

  • Backing up multiple computers?

I'm sorry if this has been answered before. Does anyone know if you can back up multiple macs on a single Time Capsule or AEBS with an airport disk? It seems logical that there would be at least a couple of macs on a wireless network, how to back both of them up?
I'm currently using an AEBS with a couple of 500GB drives on a hub plugged into the USB port - one mac was backing up with time machine fine, but I could never get the other to work.
If Time Capsule lets me do this, it may be worth the investment.
    Thanks in advance - Alan

Hello Weird_Stuff. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Does anyone know if you can back up multiple macs on a single Time Capsule or AEBS with an airport disk?
Yes for the Time Capsule, maybe for the AEBS with AirPort Disk. Each Time Machine (TM) backup will appear as a separate sparse bundle on the TC's internal hard drive.
This sparse bundle appears in Finder as YourMachineName_MACAddress.sparsebundle.

  • ARD won't save multiple computers with same IP and different port!

I'm trying to access multiple computers over the internet behind a firewall with port forwarding.
I can access each computer, but ARD won't save the IP address and port (in IP Address column of ARD 3.1) of multiple computers with the same IP address. It will only save ONE. I've tried 'add by address', adding a list for each computer or adding a list for all those computers. Nothing has worked. ARD will actually change the first computer's IP address to 0.0.0.0
    Example: Static IP address
Computer 1 xx.xxx.xxx.xxx:51 (public port 51 is forwarded to port 5900 on computer 1)
Computer 2 xx.xxx.xxx.xxx:52 (public port 52 is forwarded to port 5900 on computer 2)
Computer 3 xx.xxx.xxx.xxx:53 (public port 53 is forwarded to port 5900 on computer 3)
Has Apple really overlooked this or am I missing something? Isn't this how most people would remotely manage multiple Macs offsite?
    Thanks

ARD cannot do this as you're asking. If your
workstations get their addresses from an NAT device
rather than being "real", the ports also need to be
forwarded in the router to the workstation's internal
IP address. ARD uses port 3283 for the reporting and
updating function, so if your Macs are getting their
IP addresses through NAT, since you can only forward
a port to a single workstation, you can only get
reports, push package/files to etc. for a single
    workstation.
ARD uses the VNC protocol for observation and
control, though, and there are a range of IP
addresses for that protocol, starting with 5900. ARD
uses 5900 by default, so that port would be forwarded
to the first workstation. You would, I believe, need
to install VNC servers on the systems (since the ARD
client cannot listen on any port other than 5900
while VNC servers can be set for other ports such as
5901, 5902, etc. You would then forward 5901 to the
second workstation (and on to 5902, 5903, etc.). You
can then use the following information:
Remote Desktop 2: How to specify a port number
    for a VNC client
    to connect.
The only other options are: 1) to run the ARD
administrator on a workstation on the network, and
then take control of that system from outside, either
via VNC or another copy of ARD, or 2) set up a
virtual private network (VPN) so that when you
connect from outside, your admin system is officially
    part of the local network.
    Hope this helps.
That definitely helps. I have ARD installed on my MBP and on a workstation on the LAN. I have used ARD from the MBP to control ARD on a workstation on the local network, but it can get a little tricky. I already have VNC setup on all the workstations. I used to use COTVNC prior to purchasing ARD 3.1.
I guess what I'm really asking is...
How do I add a list of workstations and save the settings (same IP address for each workstation with different ports?) to control/VNC via ARD?
I simply want a list that shows each workstation, so I can control/VNC them using ARD offsite.
Name: Computer 1 IP Address: 123.123.123.123:5901
Name: Computer 2 IP Address: 123.123.123.123:5902
Name: Computer 3 IP Address: 123.123.123.123:5903
I don't want to have to manually type in the IP address into ARD every time.
Will ARD simply not add another computer to the list if it has the same IP address but different port number as a computer already on the list? I haven't been able to find a way to make ARD do this.

  • When Facebook is open in browser; computer will turn off montiro but not sleep, hibernate, etc... multiple computers effected, same problem... just me?

When one of my family members' leaves their facebook "feed" page open in firefox, the computer will not go to sleep, nor hibernate automatically. This effects multiple different computers running Windows 7 and Vista.
I believe it has to do with the update-window scripting, though I do not know why the browser(?) is keeping the computer awake. Peculiar though because watching a movie in the browser allows automatic sleep.. Must just be scripting.
Anyone have this issue or know of a "fix"?

    I have resolved the problem.
I replaced the AC adapter. Everying works find now. I tested runing the computer without the battery, and it works. So I might add that a possible test for an adapter that is not functioning properly is to try running it w/out the battery. If it does not run its possible that the ac adapter does not work.
    Thanks.

  • Back up multiple computers

How do I make sure that I am backing up both my iMAC and MacBook?

    On the iMac....
Click on the Time Machine clock icon on the dock and allow a few minutes for Time Machine to load.
    Can you see your backups?
If yes, click Cancel to close Time Machine
Repeat the same process with the MacBook
If you see backups for both computers, both computers are backing up.

  • Back up multiple computers/hard drives

Trying to figure out best way to back up home network. Current situation:
iMac in office with internal hard drive (250 GB) for everyday files, and external hard drive (500 GB) for media files, connected via Ethernet to AT&T Uverse modem
iMac in basement, with internal hard drive (320 GB) formatted using boot camp for both Mac (100 GB) and PC (220 GB)
Used to back up both iMacs using Time Capsule/Time Machine, but Time Capsule wireless crapped out, and subsequently replaced by AT&T Uverse (see above)
Do I need a network hard drive working with Time Machine? If so, where/how do I connect network hard drive? Can I back up all the drives (2 internal Mac hard drives, one internal PC hard drive, one external Mac hard drive) to same network hard drive?

I think you'd eant to partition the drive, at least 1 seperate Partition for the PC.
I don't use TM myself, I can backup all my Macs using Tri-Backup Pro to a drive anywhere....

Can I add a RAID HDD to the Time Capsule?  I have tried to do it, but can't select it as a backup destination.

You should be able to, but it would have to be seen by the TC as a single drive.
Not all USB drives are compatible.
And it will be slow.. exceedingly slow. Much faster just plugged into the computer.

  • Trouble w Logic on Multiple Computers - Using Same Apple ID

    Hello There,
I have purchased a new iMac and already have Logic Pro 9 installed and paid for on my Macbook Pro. I want to install Logic onto my new iMac but even with the same apple ID associated, the app store only gives me the option to pay for it again? Any help? Is it not recognizing that I have already bought it with that ID? Don't want to pay again for same program when all forums say I should be able to download. Thanks.
    Cobra

In the App Store, there is a tab labeled, "Purchases". Log on with the iMac, and you should be able to download it.

I have a work Mac owned by my company and a personal Mac; both were purchased brand new & are therefore entitled to a free copy of iMovie I believe. My workplace is telling me to sign in with my personal Apple ID in order to download iMovie. Will this cause problems for me in the future if I need to reformat my personal Mac & re-download iMovie?

No, it won't cause you problems.

  • One disk, multiple computers to back up

Can a single backup disk be used with Time Machine to back up multiple computers, or do we need one backup disk per computer?

    Shaun,
The 'eating away' you're referring to is called pre-thinning by Time Machine. This process occurs just prior to an immediately after each backup. TM will only perform pre-thinning on the backups of the current computer being backed up.
It's my understanding that the backed-up data of other computers is respected by Time Machine when it is performing backups of a different computer. Then when the other computer is being backed up TM will, if necessary, perform the pre-thinning on that computer only.
    Does this make sense?

  • Time Capsule with multiple computers

Everyone in our office uses macs, and we use time capsules for backing up. It seems that only one person can back up at any given time, so when one user is trying to do a backup, all of the other users have failed backup attempts because the disk is not ready.
I suppose I either need to make sure that people are backing up at different times, or is there another way around this?
Can I tell time machine a specific time I want it to back up or is it always going to be automated?

    RangerJoe55 wrote:
Yeah, I posted here kinda hoping to figure out how to do more scheduled type backups instead of the seemingly random ones now.
Time machine will do backups hourly, if your Mac is awake and the destination is available. There are a few exceptions, depending on when the last backup was done, such as after waking from sleep, powering-up, or after a manual backup.
It does seem weird that it won't back up multiple computers at the same time....
It usually does. I don't recall seeing a post where it doesn't.

  • Multiple Computers, one main backup drive?

Can multiple computers backup to one main backup drive?
I have a G5 desktop with a 250-GB drive (Mac OS X) and a 750-GB drive (which used to contain iTunes until I moved it to a new iMac).
So I was planning on using the G5 as the drive for Time Machine to back up to. I have my iMac, and two MacBooks using it.
Is this going to be problematical? Such as when more than one machine attempts to make a backup?

Time Machine can back up multiple computers to the same hard drive.
There are two options... one you can physically move the backup hard-drive around among the computers.
The second option is that you can backup over the network as long as all computers involved are running Leopard. To do this connect the backup drive to your G5. Turn on file sharing on the G5 for that drive. On the other computers connect to the shared drive from the Finder sidebar. The run System Preferences and in the Time Machine Preference pane select "Change Disk" and choose the network backup drive as the destination.

  • HT4522 Multiple computers on Time Capsule.  "Backup is too large for the backup disk"   ???

I am getting the following error:
    "Time Machine Error
This backup is too large for the backup disk. The
backup requires 15.38 GB but only 3.94 GB are
    available."
I have a two MacBook Pros that I have been backing up to my 1 TB Time Capsule using Time Machine.  Recently, I have started getting errors saying that there is not enough space to complete backups.  Between the two MacBook Pros, there is a max of 400 GB that I am trying to backup.  I thought that old backups were deleted to make room for new ones - so what gives?
I used Migration Assistant to migrate everything from the old MacBook Pro (2009) to a new MacBook Pro (2011).  I also used Migration Assistant to Migrate everything from an old MacBook to the old MacBook Pro (2009).  So, I am now only using the two MacBook Pros (2009 and 2011).
Is it possible that there are old backups on the Time Capsule from the MacBook and the MacBook Pro (2009) from before the Migration?  If so, how do I find them and delete them?
My goal is to create more space on the Time Capsule so I can continue backups of the two Pros.  Thanks for the help in advance.  Sorry if this is confusing.  Please ask questions to clarify.

The time machine does not work as well when there are multiple computers using the TC.
It really does not seem able to dispose of the old backups.
    Pondini may help..
    http://pondini.org/TM/C4.html
IMHO.. The best bet is to plug in a USB drive large enough to save everything on the TC and do a back directly from the airport utility.. disk, archive..
Then wipe the TC using erase.. and do a fresh TM backup on both computers.
Keep the USB drive in a draw for a year and a day.. after that you can assume anything on it is no longer required wipe it and do another backup of the TC.

  • Broadcasting "current song" over multiple computers?

Hey, I hope this is just a stupid question as it seems possible but I can't figure out how to do it; at our studio we have just connected an Airport express to our stereo and we are all able to connect successfully to the Airport and play through the stereo singularly (off of three different computers.) My question is if there is a way that I can view the current song on my computer that someone is streaming from their computer to the Airport. I've found posts about using an iphone as a remote control for an Airport so it seems like the Airport is obviously broadcasting that information out but I can't figure out how to receive it back on multiple computers/iTunes.
    Any advice?
    Thanks!

I have a similar problem. Wish I had an answer but am struggling with a similar problem. My situation is this: I have a Imac and a Macbook Pro. I have the same 4 accounts on both and I sync them through '.mac'. It works fairly well. My goal is to get one Itunes library accessible from the 2 computers and the 4 accounts per computer. I am also using Time Capsule/Machine as well. I currently keep the Itunes library on an external drive (not TCapsule). So, my problem is this:
    1. How to update from multiple accounts accross the two machines?
    2. How to access Itunes store from all of the accounts on machine 2?
I am now trying to set up individual Itunes libraries for each account on machine 1 and share to machine 2.
In any case, this is not pretty and needs to be reachitected to support a multiple user environmet.
