Error entering administrator name & password to make System Prefs changes

I have been running Leopard with just fine but encountered this new problem today. I wanted to create a "Guest" account, but when I clicked on the lock in the System Preferences: Users screen to add that option, I typde in my administrator name & password and got this error:
"Sorry, you entered an invalid username or password. Please try again."
It accepts my password when logging in, for keychain access, etc... But I'm not able to unlock & make changes with the same username & password. I tried logging in to make the changes in System Preferences under another user who is also an admin, but I got the same error message using that user's name & password.
This is a new problem for me. I unlocked & added a user account for my kids with no problems just last week and haven't made any changes to my password or account name since then.
Any thoughts on how to fix this issue? Thanks in advance!

I'm having a similar problem, since the 10.5.1 upgrade (I downloaded the 110MB version, as Apple readily admits that there are problems when using Software Update for upgrades).
I ran Disk Utility to repair permissions on my boot drive, and it prompted me for my administrator password (something that I've only had to do since the upgrade to 10.5). This time, the user name was blank (usually it fills in the user name with the account name I'm logged in under). I entered the information, and got the error. Double checked everything, and still no luck. After a third attempt, I was told I had to wait a while before trying again.
I'm hoping there's some simple fix or something I can easily to type in. I don't want to wait a few more weeks for Apple to release another patch, and I don't want to have to step back to an even more unstable version so I can use Disk Utility.

How do I get past administrator password on touch smart hp laptop 15-r136 power on

I had for my power on pass word . I finally made it to reset password put in a new one it then ask for a administrator pass word I put the same one as my power on . I made it back to the sign on screen put my pass word in Wrong one after a while it ask for my administrator pass word It would not take it.

Hi,
If your machine is producing a hexadecimal halt code, this would indicate it has a more recent AMI bios, in which case, you only have two options at the moment.
1. Contact HP and see if they can help with an unlock code - start Here.
2. Although I've had no real confirmation ( 1 case ) of this, it would appear that the hash is not stored in nvram and that removing the cmos cell, holding down the power button for a minute, then leaving it for a couple of hours before re-assembly will actually clear the password - the bad news if you wish to try this is that the cell is on the wrong side of the system board - see Page 115 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to assist you today with resetting the Administrator Name and Password on your HP Officejet Pro 8620 e-All-in-One Printer. Because the Administrator Name and Password are programmed into the printer once configured, you must perform a programming reset on your machine to eliminate the password from the printer. This programming reset will reset all settings on your printer back to their factory default out of box state. Therefore, should you utilize the wireless, ePrint or Apps on your printer these will need to be reconfigured once the reset is complete.
I am going to send you a Private Message with the instructions on how to perform the Semi-Full Programming Reset on your printer. Please refer to your Private Messages for further instruction.
In terms of securing your printer, if you use this printer in an office environment and do not with to have others using the machine you can block the Copy and Fax features from being used on the front panel of your printer. You can also block others from accessing the menu options on the front panel as well. If anyone wants to utilize the front panel menu, Copy or Fax features than they will be prompted to enter the Administrator Name and Password on the printer.
For printing, if your printer is wireless it will be accessible to those that are connected to the same network that you are connected to. Therefore, if you are in an office environment where everyone is connected to the same network, a user on that network can simply go to 'Add a Printer' and install your network printer for printing ability. There is no way to block this feature. The only way to secure your printer would be to install it on a secure network that nobody has the password to or use the printer through a direct USB Cable connection. If you use the printer in a home environment, then if your printer is networked, only those that know your Wireless Network password will be able to connect to your printer for printing ability.
Because this is a consumer level printer the Administrator options for monitoring and locking features of the product are limited. You would be able to lock and monitor a commerical grade product.
