Enter BIOS at startup

I don't know which forum to post in, but I'll try here.
One of the options in the BIOS is:
Post hotkey delay (secs)
The optional values are 0, 5, 10, etc.
My question is, what happens if I set it to 0.  It seems to imply I would have 0 seconds.  And that seems to imply  I would never again be able to enter the BIOS at startup.
My guess is there will be at least a split second to hit the ESC key, otherwise it would be pretty stupid, wouldn't it.  Can someone confirm that I will be able to get into the BIOS if I set the option to zero?

You can do that without going in the BIOS(UEFI).  At the Start screen, type System Settings and hit Enter.  There is a Boot Options tab there where you can make your boot choice. However, for when you do need to get in the BIOS in Windows 8.x, Shutdown the computer while holding down the Shift key.  Then, on Startup, hold down or rapidly tap F2 while hitting the Power  button.
Yes, you do have a Recovery partition on your HDD and you were advised to make recovery media when first using your machine for even further protection in the future. It's up to you whether you wish to make even further images.  I do and I use Macrium also.
You need to spend some time with your User's Guide particularly starting on page 46 "Recovery of The Internal Storage Drive".

  • S430 enter bios on startup

    Hi,
I reinstalled my windows on my core i5 Lenovo S430. At startup there is no option to enter the boot menu.
Normally you see press "xx" to enter bios (xx stands for f1, delete or something).
Is there a way to solve this problem?

sorry for bump but anyone know how to fix this?

  • X79A-GD65(8D) won't boot/enter BIOS

Hi, just got my new board and after rebuilding, it won't let me enter BIOS . POST seems to finish, i see the graphic, then the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor top right of screen.
    specs as follows
    X79A-GD65(8D) board
    32gb Corsair ram (8x4gb)
    Gigabyte t560TI
    Seaget 2TB and 1TB HDD's
    i7-3820 proccessor
Cant find out what the BIOS verion is
I have stripped it right back to 1 stick of ram and one HDD, no change.  Have completely dismantled and checked all connectors.
All help gratefully appreciated, this is/was my main work PC and i'm stuck badly without it.

I'm thinking the UEFI/BIOS version may be the problem. Early production mainboards may have been shipped with v1.0 or v1.2. To support the CPU you have, v1.4 is required.
Added: Standard USB keyboard and mouse? Initial startup should be with minimum components, not 8 sticks of RAM and all the HDD's. Makes it hard to troubleshoot if there is a problem. With just the one stick in the primary dimm slot, power off, pull the PSU power cord, remove the battery for awhile, clear CMOS and see if you can get into the UEFI/BIOS when tapping the Delete key. Was there a code number in the bottom right of the screen also?

Do you have a bootable USB stick? Try the CMOS clear first.

  • Can't enter BIOS & Optical output help...

    MSIFXA990-GD80
Firstly, I can't enter my BIOS via keyboard (USB or PS/2), I've tried repeatedly pressing the DEL key at startup but all that happens is I enter the boot manager! I can enter BIOS via CLICK2BIOS but due to needing to reformat and reinstall Windows i'd like to be able to enter BIOS via keyboard in case I need to?
Secondly, I can't seem to get my Optical out working in 5.1 when running a game (BF3). The only place my PC (Windows 7) will actually recognize 5.1 is here:
When I highlight Dolby and click test, It does perform the test and It does include the surround speakers.
After I ran Live Update 5, I seem to have lost a load of options in the Realtek HD Audio manager, see here:
Before I ran Live Update 5 I had allsorts of graphic EQ options here. I only ran the update as I couldn't get 5.1 to work but now it seems I have less options than before. I have of course selected Surround within my game but the AV receiver just remains on 2 channel.
Any help appreciated with this :-)

you can use latest realtek drivers from: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/990FXA-GD80.html#/?div=Driver&os=All
    or from realtek site

  • Fn Key is disabled on boot - Cannot enter bios

    Hi there,
I'm running an x240 series machine running Windows 8.1 pro. I need to enter bios. I have tried butting it from PC settings, but there is no uefi option or any menu or boot menu option.
Hence, the only option was to enter via the traditional route. However, the moment I restart the machine, the fn key green light immediately lights up, effectively locking the button. When I interrupt the normal startup process via the "enter" key, I cannot enter bios via the fn + 1 key since the fn key is disabled or locked.
Is there a reason or a solution to enable the fn key?
Update: Felt like a complete moron. The F1 label was so small on the keyboard that I missed it. Just press the mute option. You will see a tiny F1 label on it.

There is also a way to access UEFI BIOS through Windows 8.1, though it's buried pretty deep.
    Go to >PC Settings
    >Update and Recovery (it's at the very bottom)
    >Recovery (again, at the bottom. the next step shuts down you Windows session, so save your work)
       Click 'Restart now'
the OS shuts down and then displays some 'metro style' options.
       Click 'Troubleshoot'
    then     'Advanced options'
    then     'UEFI Firmware Settings'
    then     'Restart'
then you hopefully will be presented with the options that you are looking for. (works on anything running UEFI Windows 8.1)
    Have fun!

  • Cant enter Bios Setup with K8N Diamond

Anyone know whats going wrong here ....
K8N Diamond (Bios 1.7), Athlon64 3700+, 2 x 1Gb Corsair XMS-PRO 3200, ATI x300 PCI-E Graphics, 2 x WD 74GB Raptors in Raid 0 on Nvidia Raid, 1 x Samsung 120gb SATA drive on Sil controller. Running Windows x64 on the WD Raid setup and Win2k on the Samsung drive.
Everything running at stock speeds/voltages etc.
Both Windows x64 and Win2k are running stable - absolutely no problems at all. (Use F11 at bootup to select bootup option).
Problem is that I cant get into the bios setup. Pressing F2 at startup just makes the system hang. Anyone any ideas.
    cheers

  • IdeaPad U310 touch: Can no longer enter bios after updating to latest version

I flashed to the latest U310 bios (http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/65cn99ww.exe). I switched to "legacy boot mode" (from UEFI), in an attempt to workaround a driver issue. Now, I'm no longer able to enter BIOS whatsoever. There are plenty of forum posts by many users hitting the same or similar issues on U310/U410/U330 and similar ideapad products. But the resolutions where they exists are either invalid, or involve flashing to 65cn99ww.exe, which is not possible.
    [Environment]
Lenovo IdeaPad U310 touch, Windows 8 (also tried Windows 8.1)
    [What I did]
Flashed BIOS using official Lenovo bits (65cn99ww.exe). No errors occured
Enter BIOS afterwards and change to legacy boot mode (from UEFI)
    [Problem]
Cannot enter BIOS to view or change any settings.
    [Debugging]
Try to enter BIOS by key button sequence.
    1. Tried the following combinations during bootup: F2, Fn+Fn, F10, Fn+F10, F1, Fn+F1, 'B', 'N', Fn+'B', Fn+'N', Delete, Esc.
==> No change in behaviour. I tried each many times in case the timing is important.
    2. Boot by Novo button. This brings up a menu, which includes an entry to enter BIOS. However, choosing that menu entry boots to Windows
    3. Reboot to UEFI firmware settings from Windows (Settings/General/Advanced/UEFI). I can choose to boot to UEFI settings, but ultimately, just boots to Windows 8.
    4. Try to reflash BIOS. Fails with error 182: Version less than or equal. So reflash fails
    5. Try to reflash old BIOS. Flashing fails
    6. Unplug battery from motherboard for 1 minute. No difference in behavior
    7. Boot with SATA disconnected.
    8. Try various flashing options and alternate ways to flash. Not successful
    [Conclusion - BIOS is faulty]
I think this problem can be solved easily with a slightly newer variant of the BIOS being officially released by Lenovo. If someone from Lenovo is reading, can you please open an internal case on this.
Otherwise, I'm open to suggestions from the community. Does anyone know how I can hex edit the bios version #.
    Thanks

    All,
When I navigate to the U310T (touch) on the support site, I'm not finding a BIOS update.
It may be that we have removed it.  The U310 (non-touch) does still show BIOS 65 available here for Windows 8/8.1 and BIOS 21 on the same page for Windows 7.
Is it possible that you have a touch model and applied the non-touch BIOS?

  • Warning Message when entering BIOS!!

hi.. I have a K8N Neo2 platinum, 2*512MB Twinmos DDR400, 80 GB Seagate PATA, PowerColor9800Pro. so.. when I press Del to enter BIOS there is a warning message is shown to me "Warning: Have option ROM can not be invoke (Vendor ID:10DEh, Device ID: 00DFh) NVIDIA RAID IDE ROM BIOS 4.81 Copyright (c) 2004 NVIDIA Corp. Detecting array ..." this is the message. it flashes on the screen and then enters the BIOS.. The problem appeard when I updated my BIOS version 1.8 to 1.A0. I updated 1.B0, but it's still the same.   there one more thing; when windows starts my mouse dont work. I have unplag and then plag again to make it work.. What can I do for both of my problems... thanks a lot..

Warning: Have option ROM can not be invoke (Vendor ID:10DEh, Device ID: 00DFh) .
Option ROM is in this case the PCI ROM file embedded in bios for nvpxe ( boot from network)
There is something broken in the bios boot options and this ROM file .
    Device ID: 00DF is the
    NVIDIA Network Bus Enumerator Driver
It's not normal , and in fact there is something broken for boot options in all 1.9/1.A and 1.B bioses .
My guess it is related to the work msi have done with more usb boot type media .
But it's related to network boot and does not affect most of us as network PXE booting is
    seldom used .
Other things thats brooken is boot from addin disk controller PCI cards internal bios .
If you have this you will get a second warning with that cards vendor id and device id .

  • How to enter BIOS settings on Equium L10?

Please can someone tell me what button i press too get into the bios setup at the start when i switch my pc on cos i have tried every thing, but nothing works.

    Hello
Every time when you switch the notebook ON you can see at the bottom left hand site the short instruction how to enter BIOS settings. In your case you must use F2 button. Please keep it down immediately after switching the notebook ON.
Generally the Toshiba notebooks are delivered with two different BIOS versions (BIOS producer):
    - TOSHIBA BIOS: enter using ESC and F1 button
    - Phoenix BIOS: enter using F2 button.
According the specification your unit has Phoenix BIOS.

I am installing a new HDD and I want to install windows 8 with my recovery discs.
So ,how can i enter bios to format the new HDD and start the recovery from mi discs.
    Thanks for any help.

    Cucutitos, welcome to the forum.
You will not have to enter th BIOS to format the new HDD.  Here is what you have to do:
System Recovery: This option reformats the system drive (usually C:\), reinstalls the original operating system, and reinstalls all the original hardware drivers and software.
Warning:If the size of the OS partition (usually C:\) was reduced below a minimum size requirement, other user-created partitions will be removed and stored data will be destroyed.
Also, here is a guide to give you further help.  Make certain that the new HDD is the same size of larger than the current HDD.
Note: To enter the BIOS begin immediately tapping the "esc" key when the computer begins to boot.

Second problem: I ask u this thing cause I had a problem. I installed Virtual Cd 7 and I created a virtual cd (d:) when I start my pc a white text appears: no starter disk insert disk and push a button. What can I do thanx

    Hi,
for entering BIOS you have to press ESC directly after pressing power button!
I have no experience with virtual CD but I use a tool called Daemon tools. With this tool you can use a hdd based CD image as normal CD during Windows!
Try it you will find it at google

    Hello
I asked a friend of me because he has Qosmio G50 and you have to press F2 key to enter BIOS setup.
By the way: If you press F12 you can select the boot device. Therefore its not necessary to enter the BIOS. :)
