Enter vs. Shift Enter

Simple question here (I think) that i'm hoping somebody can help me with.
How do I know how hitting 'enter' vs hitting 'shift>enter' is going to react in InDesign? Sometimes 'enter' gives me a new paragraph, and sometimes it bumps me right out of the text box. Other times 'shift>enter' reacts in the same manner.
I realize this is probably an ultra-simple solution, I just can't seem to determine when 'enter' will give me a new paragraph and when 'shift>enter' will give me a new paragraph. Thanks.

I have a hunch that both replies overlooked a part of your question. Mind you, they're both completely right. However, I suspect that you were actually asking about this:
If you have a paragraph space of zero, enter and shift-enter will look exactly the same onscreen. However, if you have paragraph-space-before or paragraph-space-after defined, then...

On full keyboards with a numeric keypad, the key above the right shift is "return" & the one on the numeric section is "enter." On a Mac (or Apple IIgs ) they do have separate functions. On the "mini" keyboards, both names are on the same key, but "enter" is written in smaller letters. I'll have to check to see how that works on another Mac later today.

Enter and shift keys not working. HELP!!!

A few days ago my mouse started behaving erratically all of a sudden. It would move by itself, click apps, and switch tabs rapidly all on its own. I've had this computer for over 2 years and this has never happened before. Restarting and rebooting into safe mode didn't work, but one user suggested a PRAM reset and that fixed the mouse problem. However, my enter and shift key on the right side do not work now (this is much less annoying than the mouse problem, but still very inconvenient!). Restarting the computer and doing another PRAM reset doesn't work unfortunately. I also used the keyboard viewer to confirm that all but those two keys work. I don't think the issue is with keyboard lint because both keys worked fine before I tried the reset. Booting up in safe mode also doesn't fix the problem. It would be great if I could find a way to fix this here since I won't be able to go to an Apple genius bar until December!

The troubleshooting detailed below may help restore functionality to your MacBook Pro's keyboard.
Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane in System Preferences, then click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working. If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly. Use How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.

Does this bad behavior persist when logging in as a different user, e.g., Guest? Does it persist when starting up in Safe Mode?

Shift + enter does not open library selection

No matter how I try to open iTunes - shift + left-click, highlighting the icon (or program in Explorer) and then shift + enter, iTunes only opens the last opened library. I am not getting the dialogue box that lets me choose which library I want to open.
Windows 7 Home Premium + iTunes 10.7.0.21

The way that I find works is to click the icon that launches iTunes from the start menu (or double-click one on the desktop) and immediately press and hold down the left shift key. Keep holding until asked to create or choose a library. If iTunes opens normally, close and try again.

DOWN Traversal out of JTextArea using SHIFT+ENTER key combination.

Hi folks
I slightly modified the focus-traversal code presented in Java Tutorial (http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/misc/focus.html) to replace the CTRL+TAB combination with SHIFT-ENTER (because it is easier to type) but the code does not work. The code in the tutorial works for just ENTER key only. Am I making any mistake? Can anyone help me on this?

Shift Enter isn't working.

When I use Shift Enter to go down one space, I get an error message saying the Visible Elements needs to be checked; it is. If I just enter i get to wide of a space. I need the shift enter back. I also get an error saying afterSave is not defined. I can't find afterSave in my code. All this happened at the same time, but I'm not sure what I did to create this problem. I'm self taught and don't speak tech language. If you can help me, please keep it simple for me. Thank you kindly.

You probably deleted the 'Shift + Enter Line Break' shortcut from your DW preferences.
If you're using Windows, You need to go to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts > Menu Commands/ Insert
Then make a code snippet for the xhtml BR and then make Shift + Enter as shortcut
If you're using a Mac, You need to go to Dreamweaver (from topmost Menu bar) > Keyboard Shortcuts > Menu Commands/ Insert
Then make a code snippet for the xhtml BR and then make Shift + Enter as shortcut
This should revive your 'Shift Enter' shortcut.

Okay, here is the deal.
Whenever I login or a something asking my password pops up I can't enter the numbers while using shift.
I have to put CAPS LOCK on for some reason, and I don't know why.
I recently formatted my mac and re-installed Mountain Lion and since then this error occurs. Very strange.
Any ideas?

I couldn't correct all the font duplicates because some were used by the system.

Not sure what you mean by Update (Combo) I have automatic updates turned on. Do I need to do still more to assure an updated system?
The only reason I suggested that was because your Apple Discussions "My Settings" system profile lists Mac OS X (10.6.3) as your current system.

If you are on a small keyboard (ie with no numbers pad) use FunctionShift Return
or If you are on a 'numbers keyboard', the Enter key is on the right next to the 3 key (and NOT the Return Key).

MacBook Pro Keyboard problems with shift and enter

would really appreciate help here. neither of the shift keys works, as you can see. the enter key doesn't do anything either. some of the function keys are also not working but i'm less concerned by those.
i activated the keyboard viewer and can see that the key between the right command key and the left arrow key now acts as the enter key. however the shift keys don't register at all.
i'm pretty sure the keys all worked when i first bought the computer in november. also keys work normally when i use the wireless keyboard.
i get the problems whether the wireless keyboard is connected or not.
does anyone know the answer to this problem - it's also annoying not having access to the question mark or any of the smbols above numbers - caps lock doesn't give you access...

If the problem is the same one I have and many others have expressed, it's the small gold ribbon found beneath the battery. It seems that lots of them are failing, although Apple won't acknowledge the problem and the fix is expensive (~$300).
To find out if it is the problem, remove the battery (with the computer plugged in and powered on), press down on the small cable, and see if the keyboard/mouse become responsive. Some people have taped the cable with success, but mine only works with constant hard pressure. So, it's been retired as a laptop and has essentially become a desktop with a USB cable/mouse.

Internet Explorer has a handy feature when typing in url's. When you begin typing and the autocomplete drop-down box pops up, you can press shift+enter to automatically finish typing the top entry and go to that site. Does Firefox have that kind of functionality? I haven't been able to find it in preferences or about:config.

Can't opened elevated prompt with ctrl-shift-enter

Here's an odd one. I've seen it several times over the last year on different computers - all Windows 7, but both Home Premium and Pro. I believe all were 64 bit.
When I type cmd in the Search Programs and Files box and hit ctrl-shift-enter, it opens an explorer window showing c:\windows\system32.
The same thing happens if I type cmd.exe and and hit ctrl-shift-enter.
If I type command and and hit ctrl-shift-enter, then I get the elevated prompt, as it should do.
Anyone know how to fix this? SFC comes up fine, the machine has been scanned for infections.

How to change shift+enter to be newline in Messages

I use a few chat message programs on Mavericks but the Messages app is the only that doesn't use Shift+Enter for a new line and sends the half written message instead.
Enter & Shift+Enter in messages does the same thing.
Is there a way to change the keyboard shortcut so that Shift+Enter gives a newline instead of sending the message?

Hi,
Like you I have long used th ALT/Option+Enter keys to produce new lines/paragraphs in iChat and Messages.
This set of keystrokes appear nowhere in the menus.
I did create a shortcut for Mail when it had no Keystrokes for adding a Link.
Now that the current Mail App does have CMD + K I get the System Error sound when I want to use the one I created.
This suggests that even if you added a Shortcut keystroke in System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts tab it would not work.
