Thanks for your awesome answer. That defenatly helped. I just started to look around cisco's site for information about what you said. I found this - http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps133/products_tech_note09186a008022493f.shtml
Everything you said was right there. Guess I'll have to search harder next time - hopefully there will be no next time. haha

  • System doesn't boot kernel26beyond

    Since a week or so, my system doesn't boot, unless I press <enter> and the power button a few times during the process.
    Once it has booted, everything works fine, but it is highly annoying nevertheless.
    it seems to have something to do with loading my hardware.
    Boot freezes after these log messages:

    my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:
    MODULES=""

    FILES=""
    HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide filesystems"
    I tried removing scsi and sata, since my root is on an ide disk. But the problem persists.
    also recreating an image using mkinitcpio or reinstalling the kernel26beyond package using pacman doesn't help.
    Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong and how this problem might be resolved.
    It seems like a trivial issue since the systems basically works fine otherwise. However, I can't figure it out by myself, I have tried for a week.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I'm not sure if this will help you, but I suddenly was having a lot of trouble booting. My system would just freeze with a blinking cursor. I thought it had something to do with my floppy drive because if I changed the boot priority in my bios to boot from the hard disk 1st, the system would boot but would hang for a very long time in areas, and as long as 5 minutes loading uevents. I suspected this was a udev problem.
    I issued a few commands to reset udev, thinking maybe recent updates didn't take effect, which did the trick...
    # udevtrigger
    # udevcontrol reload_rules
    After that, everything is back to normal. I'm still learning about udev and I'm still fuzzy about a lot of the techy stuff.

  • Tecra S1 doesn't boot and hangs at (boot) splash screen

    Tecra S1 Model PT831E-107EQ-GR
    Problems started a month ago. It randomly didn't booted. After some power off/on tries it finally booted and worked properly. Because it happened more often I've bought a new hard drive (Toshiba 40 GB). I've had Acronis True Image and planned to make a disk clone to the new drive. The problem is that a notebook now doesn't boot anymore so I cannot boot it from A CD nor hard drive. It stops at "In Touch..." logo with "Press [F12] for the boot device selection menu" text and doesn't react any key. I tried to boot with no CD, no hard drive - the same. I also connected internal HD using ATA-To-USB adapter - the same. Does it mean that's not a disk problem but motherboard or other components? Is it possible to enter BIOS before boot selection screen?
    Regards,
    Jacek

    Problem solved. There was a broken PCB under the CPU socket. I've found that pressing with my finger and holding CPU while booting allowed to startup the system while releasing the finger caused system hanging and its total crash. Our local service tried to repair it but with no success. Finally two days ago we've found a working motherboard (a used one) for about 200 USD and now I'm waiting for installing it in the laptop. Th regular price for a new one (about 400 Euro) is too much, but 200 USD is OK. I do like the laptop because of its ports (LPT, RS232). It's used for programming and controlling some older devices. Newer laptops have no LPTs nor RS232s and it's not easy to find a working USB adapter because the software we're using is even from DOS times and has hard-coded IRQs for those ports.
    Anyway, I hope it'll back from the service fresh and new, and of course working ;)
    Thank you for your tips.
    Regards,
    Jacek

  • IBook G4 doesn't boot

    Hi,
    I just bought a broken iBook G4 on eBay thinking I would be able to fix it without replacing the logic board. The iBook doesn't boot properly. When I press the power button, I can hear the SuperDrive start up, then the screen with the gray Apple shows up and the OS starts to load normally. But when that screen goes away and the blue background comes up, it just stops there... no "Loading Mac OS X" window with the progress bar. I figured that this may have been a deviation of the iBook G4 logic board problem where people used clamps to pin down the left side of the iBook and hold the faulty chip to the logic board, allowing the iBook to boot. I gave it a shot, but instead of using clamps I tried putting a small rubber shim on top of the faulty chip inside of the case to see if it would work. The first time I booted it up after I placed the shim, it worked fantastically. No hanging at the loading screen, no sluggish performance.
    That was the way it worked for a couple of days. However, the booting problem soon returned. I tried booting from a Tiger reinstall disk to verify/repair the disk/permissions, but the iBook hung at the same blue screen. I didn't have the original install discs that came with the iBook, so I couldn't run a hardware test on it. I also tried booting from a Leopard install disk to no avail. Resetting the PRAM, NVRAM, and PMU did nothing as well. I even went so far as to replace the RAM in the expansion slot with RAM that I knew was working, but the iBook remained broken.
    The strangest part of this was that the iBook worked perfectly on another computer when put into TDM. I was able to verify/repair both permissions and the disk from my Power Mac G5. Even though the iBook's screen becomes scrambled with random colors and lines after a few minutes in TDM, it functions just fine on another computer. I was even able to successfully boot my Power Mac and iMac from the iBook in TDM. Seeing as this was possible, I tried reinstalling Tiger on the iBook (in TDM) remotely from my Power Mac. It worked like a charm. Following that reinstall, I downloaded and installed all of the software updates. Then I tried to boot the iBook natively again, but to no avail. It still hung at that same blue screen.
    At this point, I suspect that there is something wrong with the logic board that I am unable to fix without completely replacing the logic board itself. That's sort of disappointing, but I guess that's just the way it is. If anyone has any input to this, feel free to respond. Here are the iBook's specs:
    CPU: 1Ghz (1064Mhz)
    RAM: 256MB soldered, 1 expansion slot open
    HDD: 30GB 4200 rpm
    Screen Size: 12 inches
    Optical Drive: Combo Drive
    For the complete list of specs, see this page: http://support.apple.com/specs/iBook/iBookG4_Early2004.html
    Thanks,
    -Trevor

    Trevor,
    I just took the heatsink off and I see the GPU. However, there are multiple parts to it.
    So that would be called a daughter card. The problem with a daughter card is that the possibility of a reballing/reflowing failure is increased.
    Should I place a shim over the whole chip or just one part of it?
    It's that whole daughter card that has the problem. I've got a post around here somewhere. Here's the thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6051715&#6051715
    The picture is here:
    http://tinyurl.com/3835w2
    Also, what material should I use for a shim here?
    Probably the most elegant solution would be to use thermal pads like the ones that are already there. Don't build them up too much.
    What about from underneath?
    My fear is that a metal shim will short the GPU and damage the logic board permanently. But I also fear that an insulating shim will not conduct heat as it is supposed to and cause the GPU to overheat.
    Dale at Superior says that chip doesn't put out much heat but better to be overly cautious. I wouldn't use metal since there's no give to it. What's directly under that 9200 daughter card? One of my thoughts was to shim from both sides.
    Where did you put that first shim?
    Richard

  • Setup airport wrong, now scan doesn't find it. how do I fix?

    After excellent Apple help, I setup airport wrong, Now scan doesn't find the wireless router - time machine - at all. I think I may have selected bridge for internet, and now the amber light is on steady and doesn't show up in a scan so I can reset it. I have connected the cable modem directly to the computer to get local internet, but my wireless to other computers is down. Support is closed now - how do I fix? I appreciate any ideas on how to reach the time capsule/airport router.

    The factory default reset does not require that you access the TC via the AirPort Utility first. Instead, you would first unplug the TC from power. Then using a paperclip or similar object depress and hold in the reset button. While still holding in the button, plug the TC back into power. Hold the reset button down until the status light starts flashing rapidly then release the button. You may have to perform these steps a few times to make sure the reset "sticks."
    Once you have successfully reset the TC, temporarily connect your computer directly, using an Ethernet cable, to one of its available LAN (opposing arrows) ports. You should now be able to access the TC using the AirPort Utility.

  • IBook doesn't boot

    My iBook (1.2Ghz, late 2004) doesn't boot anymore since yesterday. I treid to reset the battery (by using it until empty, and recharging it) but when my iBook shut dow (when the battery was empty) it didn't boot anymore.
    I tried:
    -to zap the PRAM (optioncommand+PR)
    -to do the hardware test (while holding C)
    -to enter open-firmware (optioncommand+OF)
    -resettig PMU
    neither of these suceeded.
    I also don't hear the startup chime.
    Is there anything else I can do to try and boot it?
    Before this it booted without problems, I don't understand why I can't even get in the open firmware.
    alltough my iBook is out of warranty, I suspect this to be a fabrication fault, will I have to pay if I let it repair? (I was planning to buy another MacBook Pro, don't know if I can trust apple products enough to buy them again. This isn't my first problem, I had one of the bad batteries where apple started a exchange program for)

    The indicator LED's at the bottom of the battery say it has, and the illuminated ring of the adapter is also lit green.

  • Mac Book Pro doesn't boot (twice; after updating) and slow performance before these incidents

    Hi,
    Maybe someone can help me resolving a (re) boot issue with my Mac Book Pro. Last few weeks I experienced a tremendous drop in performance (start-up as well as handling and using applications).
    Yesterday I downloaded and installed  an app to clean stuff from the mac, such as binaries that aren't used, cache files, etc. It resulted in substantial better performance. Than, I used the updater on this application to update. This morning, the Mac wouldn't boot. After several attempts I used the old DVD with Mac OS X to re-install and boot. That worked.
    Following this approach, I received two messages (that HP apps weren't secured or something and therefor disabled). Than I updated the Mac OS X and later this evening it asked me if I wanted to install some (4) other updates as well (don't know what updates these were). So I updated but now I am back at square one: My Mac doesn't boot. I do get the grey starting screen, but now even the 'apple' logo is missing.
    Anyone else experiencing these problems and have any clues on how to fix it? By the way, I also tried to alter permissions on all files on the main hard drives (to ensure that I do not always have to sign off on updates and or changes of applications). Would that have caused problems?

    You seem to have a lot going on here, so it's hard to know what's wrong. You likely had some underlying problems before doing the Software Update.
    Here's a link that might help with the grey screen problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    Which app did you download?
    If you can get booted up, check in the System Profiler to see that all of your RAM is recognized--if not, you may need to reseat one or both sticks.
    If you can boot from your install disc, run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test to check for hardware problems. Freezing can be caused by a dying hard drive, which can also tend to corrupt software.
    While booted from the install disc, navigate to Disk Utility and repair your boot disk. You can do this 2 or 3 times even if it says no problems found.
    While in Disk Utility, check to see that the SMART status of your hard drive is verified. If not, you will need to replace the drive.
    It probably wouldn't hurt to reinstall the OS.
    Do you have a good, up to date backup? If not, it would be a good idea to make one as soon as you can, just to be on the safe side.
    Have you tried a Safe Boot?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
    These are just a few ideas to get you started. Post back if you have more questions.
    Good luck!

  • GRUB2 doesn't boot

    GRUB Loading.
    Welcome to GRUB!
    error: file not found
    Entering rescue mode...
    grub rescue>_
    This is the only error message I get. I can't use rescue prompt anyway, since I can't use QWERTY.
    I'm certain that grub.cfg is located in /boot/grub/ and I reinstalled GRUB and regenerated config numerous times.
    Yet, no avail.

    Can you tell us about your general partitioning scheme? I remember from the IRC channel that you have a separate boot partition.
    Post your /etc/fstab. Maybe it's not mounted correctly or there are some files missing from there. The idea is to mount the boot partition (which contains a "grub" folder) in the "boot" folder from your "/" so that it looks like this: /boot/grub/grub.cfg (and not /boot/boot/grub/grub.cfg).
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB2
    Warning: Make sure to check the /boot directory if you use the latter. Sometimes the boot-directory parameter creates another /boot folder inside of /boot. A wrong install would look like: /boot/boot/grub/.
    PS: If you're going to post the fstab file, the output of these wouldn't hurt either (ran from a "live" Linux distribution):
    # fdisk -l
    # blkid

    Restore the iPad from the computer to which the iPod is synced. For information and instructions, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1212
    If that will not work, you'll need to put the iPad into Recovery Mode and then try the Restore again:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
    If that still doesn't work, as a last resort try DFU mode:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    You may have to do this several times.
    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
  • Vado doesn't boot up / stuck in the splash screen
    My recently bought Creative Vado HD doesn't boot anymore - I press the power button and I only see the red led blink for a second. Before this it used to turn on, but wouldn't get out of the splash screen "VADO HD". (and it wouldnt turn off, only if I took out the battery)
    The camera has frozen sometimes before, but then I would take the battery out and put it in again to have it working ok. Now reinsertingthe battery doesnt fix it.
    If I connect the vado to the pc, it just shows the splash screen and doesnt boot or even charge the battery (I left it connected ov3ernight but It didnt charge the battery, It just killed it because it stayed all night showing the splash screen. - and thats why , i think, it only shows the red light blink instead of showing the splash screen when i try to turn the camera on.
    I dont know if this issue might have triggered the problem but here it is:
    minutes before vado died I connected the vado to my vizio tv and watched some videos. Then I pulled the hdmi cable and connected the camera to the pc. I noticed it wasnt detected at all -- the vado was stuck in the splash screen.
    i cant install a firmware or anything else because the camera is not detected and is stuck in the splash screen.
    Hi Setmedown,
    It sounds like something is wrong with the Vado HD, if you have not already I would suggest contacting our Customer Support.
    Built my rig today and I'm having the same problem. The hard drive and BDR player show up in the Bios. When I boot the system it says "please select the boot device." The only option is CD/DVD, which has the windows 7 disc inside. When I press enter it says "No bootable device, press any key to go back"  I can't get any further than that.
    I tried a number of HDD's and DVD Drives, with the same unsuccessful results. I could use some assistance if anyone's nailed the source of this problem.
  • Can´t enter bios setup/system does not boot
    Hi,
    I got a problem with my new KT6 Delta MS-6590 board.
    Sometimes after a prog is crashed and its better to restart windows, my System doesn´t boot anymore. It hangs after searching RAID-Disks. The Broadcom Dialog does not appear and the System stands. When I try to reset and would like to get into the bios setup I can´t enter it. The Delete Key do not work. After clearing cmos and going on with default values the systems works correctly until the next crash.
    The bracket says "Boot attempt"
    Whats the problem please help  ?(
    Read "KT6-LSR and installing Windows on SATA" post (At this moment is the last in this page). There you'll find many posts about Raid problems.  8)
