Enterprise Core-based Licensing for SQL2012

We have a 16 core SQL Server 2012 Enterprise License for a server.
Question 1: When installed, does this mean that SQL will only use 16 physical server cores even if the server has 24 cores in total?
Question 2: Not taking account the disk or RAID layout of the server, would you chose to have more cores OR a faster processor. Assume this is a mixed use server, some data warehouse, some OLTP.
Thank you,
Denka

No.  If you have 16 core licenses, you are not permitted to run SQL on a sever with more than 16 cores.
There is no technical limitation; you will just be out of compliance.

Always favor faster cores.  SQL is licensed by the core, no matter how fast, and fast cores benefit
all workloads.  But more cores only help if you have many concurrent users or parallel queries.

  • Can VLM disconnect a user-based license?

Currently, we are using Computer-based licenses for our products.  For some of our users that work disconnected, we eat up two licenses.  So we're contemplating switching to a user-based license schema for some our products.  I've found some documentation detailing how to disconnect a computer (http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/6202245633CF18328625712B00095F2E) .  How does disconnecting a user work? Is there a tutorial on that?
    Solved!

    Hey Richard,
"Disconnecting Users" is definitely possible within NI VLM.  While it is a simple and straightforward process, there is an extra step involved, since it's not the human (user) that is disconnecting from the network, it's a machine (computer).  As such, you must effectively generate a new Computer entry in NI VLM (that will ultimately be disconnected), associate that Computer with a particular User's permission set, and then then disconnect the Computer.
The following KnowledgeBase article details this process.

If this rounds out your concernrs regarding migrating some or all of your licenses to be user-based, feel free to contact our contracts group to make the switch by emailing agreements at ni.com.

  • Downgrade windows 8 enterprise to windows 7 enterprise under volume license and steps for installing windows 7 enterprise.

How to downgrade from windows 8 enterprise to windows 7 enterprise under volume license? and what are the steps for installing windows 7 enterprise?

The link provided by v-yamliu works good.
Steps for installing Windows 7 Enterprise can differ based on the method of installation.
Windows 7 Enterprise, being an enterprise product, is usually installed on PCs count of 20 and above. Also, organisations usually modify the standard installation image to suit the organisation's needs and policies. In doing so, they define the way the Enterprise
edition can be installed. They can be ZTI (Zero Touch Installation) or LTI (Lite Touch Installation). The following links will be helpful in this case:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd919179(v=ws.10).aspx
If the above case is not true and only a standard image is being used, you can perform clean install as mentioned by v-yamliu. The following link will be helpful:

  • SQL Licensing for Enterprise environment

    Hi Guys,
currently we are planing our possible ways to migrate to Lync2013. Due to our Microsoft-EA we already own Lync Enterprise CALs and 3 Lync Server.
Now we have some reallly important questions on the Backend SQL issue:
after all we got confilicting statements from our MS-Licensing Partner an some Consultants.
    1. ) it looks like, that Microsoft does not support an "activ/activ"-SQL Cluster even if LYNC gets an own instance.
this is an unbelievable statemen in consideration of the face a customer already spent a lot of bucks for the SQL-Core-LICs.
2.) if we'll use a dedicated SQL Standard Edition we also need SQL-CALs in addition to the Lync-CALs for all users using LYNC. the LYNC Enterprise-CAL does not contain the right to access the SQL-host. otherwise we need SQL-corelicenses which are ridiculous
    expensive.
Is there someone who solved this issue for an supported environment.
    regards
    Heiko

    Hi,
    First let's clarify some points
1- There is no requirements for SQL CAL licensing For Lync, disregarding the SQL version that you are using ( standard/Enterprise), why ? because :
Lync Users doesn't directly access the SQL backend
and also these licences are already covered by the Lync Server License that you already purchased.
2- The only way to have an Active/Active SOL Cluster, is by configuring Always On availability Features and indeed Lync server 2013 doesn't support these features.
3- When it comes to SQL licensing options the only the SQL Standard edition has Sever/CAL or Per core Licensing option. Where the SQL Enterprise Edition can only be licensed with the Per-core option.
4- Lync Server 2013 support SQL Mirroring or SQL failover cluster as database high availability options. I both cases the following is applicable:
Only active SQL instances requires licenses
dedicated SQL instances can be hosted on Servers which are part of always on availability groups or Failover Cluster

  • SQL 2012 Enterprise (Evaluation) - To Enterprise Core (Licensed) Edition Upgrade Warning on Always-On

    Hi all,
I am need to do an Edition Upgrade on a SQL Server 2012 Enterprise (evaluation) to a licensed version of the Enterprise version. We do already have set-up Always on Availability Groups, however when I want to perform the Edition Upgrade I receive the following
    warning:
The AlwaysOn Availability Groups feature is enabled on this instance of SQL Server and it is not supported in the edition being changed to. Before proceeding, disable AlwaysOn Availability Groups on the server instance. For more information, see SQL Server
    Books Online.
I am using the correct media, as well if I need to accept the license terms I can see it's the Enterprise Core edition, so I am wondering why I receive this message. And of course I did not proceed, because I do not want to loose my availability groups.

    Hi Hans,
    Personally, according to the
features supported by the editions of SQL Server 2012, it is support on AlwaysOn Availability Groups feature on the Enterprise version. In theory, the AlwaysOn Availability Groups feature is supported on the Enterprise version after upgrading.
About this warning, if it is in test environment, we can do a test and check if the warning will effect AlwaysOn Availability Groups feature. Or
I recommend to submit it to the Microsoft Connect at this link
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/Feedback. So that a dedicated Support Professional can assist
you in a more efficient manner.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • DPS Enterprise License for Apple's B2B Store

    Hey everyone,
we developed an app and successfully tested it on our iPads via DPS. We aim to distribute the app via the B2B store from Apple and the tutorial PDF from Adobe tells me that we need an "Enterprise license" for DPS.
Our company uses Adobe Creative Cloud and I am wondering now whether this already  means that we have an "Enterprise license" for DPS, as well?
    Cheers,
    Alex

    No. It does not.

  • Enterprise Wireless Mesh License needed for controller and AP's?

If I have a 2112 WLAN Controller and 7 1240AG AP's what licensing do I need to purchase to enable enterprise wireless mesh? Do I need to get the license for the controller (AIR-AP-LIC-M-12)? A license for each AP? Both? Thanks for any replies!

    Hi Andy,
You only require the Mesh license for the Controller not for the individual AP's :)
    Solution
The Cisco EWM license is required for wireless mesh deployments for the indoor access point platforms, including the Cisco Aironet 1130 and 1240 Series. For the Cisco Aironet 1500 Series, these licenses are not required. These EWM licenses are required for all the WLAN controllers when mesh indoor acess points are associated with the controller. Each WLAN controller has a corresponding EWM license. The license entitles the user to configure as many mesh indoor access points as the controller allows.
The license SKUs are as follows:
    • AIR-AP-LIC-RTU=, Cisco Advanced Feature License
    • AIR-AP-LIC-M-6, Cisco Advanced Enterprise Wireless Mesh, 6-AP Controller
    • ***AIR-AP-LIC-M-12, Cisco Advanced Enterprise Wireless Mesh, 12-AP Controller
    • AIR-AP-LIC-M-25, Cisco Advanced Enterprise Wireless Mesh, 25-AP Controller
    • AIR-AP-LIC-M-50, Cisco Advanced Enterprise Wireless Mesh, 50-AP Controller
    • AIR-AP-LIC-M-100, Cisco Advanced Enterprise Wireless Mesh, 100-AP Controller
    • AIR-AP-LIC-M-300, Cisco Advanced Enterprise Wireless Mesh, 300-AP Controller

  • DCNM for LAN Enterprise License for one Nexus 7000 Chassis

if i have just   DCNM-N7K-K9 (DCNM for LAN Enterprise License for one Nexus 7000 Chassis) installed on a server, i can manage all nexus switches like 5k and 2k??

You can manage 2K & 5K devices but a $0 cost license is required. A purchase order for DCNM-NXACC-100-K9 should do the trick.

  • OT: Prior art for term-based licenses

I note from Slashdot article http://slashdot.org/story/09/10/09/215235/Microsoft-Moves-To-Patent-Time-Based-Software-Licensing that Microsoft has applied for a patent on Term-based licenses.
I wonder how log Oracle has had those types of licenses and whether they could be considered 'prior art' or 'common usage'? Or whether Oracle will end up paying Microsoft a user fee to keep selling term licenses?

    Hi Hans,
Don't get me wrong, I'm a strong believer in intellectual property rights, but I'm not sure that computer programs fall under "inventions".
There was a Supreme court case awhile back, where Apple sued Microsoft, claiming that they "invented" the drop-down menu, and therefore MS was infringing!
The court said that "data access methods" cannot be patented.
