Enterprise Manager Newbie Q's

Greetings All,
Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production
Windows 2008 R2Last night one of the production users received an ORA-01652: unable to extend temp segment by 128 in tablespace TEMP error.
Hence, my manager has requested that I
“Please configure our database servers to notify us via email when critical thresholds are exceeded.
This is a standard config option within enterprise manager”.I have very little experience/exposure with EM. In fact I’ve found several terms that I think all refer to the same thing (correct me if I’m wrong please), for example : "OEM Database Control", "OEM Grid Control", and something called "The Business Service Management (BSM)" capabilities of Oracle Enterprise Manager.
Are these different products/tools, or different implementations of the OEM?
We are not a RAC shop; Is the term GRID is also used to indicate a RAC environment?
I am looking for some good "How To Use/Configure OEM" sources of information. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I’m looking a purchasing the following books, any recommendations on these or others?
Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control Handbook (Oracle Press) - Werner De Gruyter
Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control 11g R1: Business Service Management - Ashwin Kumar Karkala, Govinda Raj Sambamurthy
It seems that there is a data repository for the OEM. Is this generally required? Can I set things up such that I can get e-mail notifications when tablespace(s) exceed a certain usage threshold without the repository?
I know I’ve rambled about some, thanks for your patients.
Thanks for your time,
Bob

I can answer a couple of your questions...
"OEM Database Control" is essentially "Oracle Enterprise Manager for a single database". "OEM Grid Control" (or, the current release, "OEM Cloud Control" is essentially "Oracle Enterprise Manager for several databases", plus the ability to monitor server hosts, web applications, and quite a few other non-database items. They are similar, but different products. Database Control generally gets installed along with the database software itself, while Grid/Cloud Control is a completely separate installation of a standalone product. I have no idea what the BSM bit refers to.
Database Control uses the one monitored database as its data repository (in the SYSMAN schema). Grid Control also requires a repository, but you are allowed to install a separate database, without additional licensing fees, to serve as the repository for Grid Control so long as you don't use it for anything else (other than as an RMAN recovery catalog). If you don't want to install another database to serve Grid/Cloud Control, you can use an existing database, but it's generally not recommended.
Neither Database Control nor Grid/Cloud Control will function without a repository. Either of them will allow you to set up alert notifications when tablespace(s) exceed your configured thresholds, or when various other events occur (DB shuts down, filesystem getting full, CPU load too high, too many sessions, whatever you like).
The term "Grid" is used in "Oracle Grid Infrastructure", which is part of the clustering package that supports RAC. "Grid" is just a marketing term there, RAC and Grid Control are orthogonal concepts, neither requires the other but they can also be used together.
I can't comment on the books.

  • Newbie Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g feature availability question

Newbie question here. I am new to Oracle 11g and new to this forum. I ran a search on this question and came up empty so hopefully there is a kind and knowlegable soul wo can help.
I recall in earlier versions of Oracle Enterprise Manager for earlier versions of Oracle there was something called Oracle Enteprise Manager Reporting accessible from the OEM web.
One of its key features was the ability to make custom "Additional Reports". In our current environment this is installed and works great. I don't know if it was an add on to OEM, or if it was built in. It was built a long time ago and I wasn't arround for that build. All I know is it works and it suits our needs.
Well we are now trying to build a new Oracle dev box to replace the current dev environment. We would prefer to not lose any existing functionality we have... and if possible not have to reinvent the wheel. The new box has Oracle 11g.
**Here comes the dumb newbie questions. **
Does Oracle 11g Enterprise Manager support 9i-style Enterprise Manager Reporting and Custom Reports?
Is it called that in 11g or has it been renamed to something else?
Is it it a simple matter of configuration or is it an add on that needs to be installed?
Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
Wayward Oracle Newbie looking for an Oracle Home

Oracle 11g does not support 9i-style custom reports. There is a new reporting framework - Information Publisher available in Grid Control 10+ versions. The new reporting framework does support custom reports as well. Click on the Reports tab to access the functionality.

  • Error ORA-12560 prompts when trying to log in to the Enterprise Manager

    Hi all,
I am a newbie to Oracle.
Just installed the Oracle 9i Database Enterprise Edition (9.0.1) into Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. Problem is encountered when trying to log in to the Enterprise Manager Standalone mode using either system/oracle or scott/tiger as credentials. Error "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error" prompts.
I tried to check with some configuration and see whether the services are started. Services of "OracleOraHome90TNSListener" and "OracleServiceORCL" have been started and the database exists in the dedicated directory. Environment variables of "ORACLE_HOME" and "ORACLE_SID" have been added manually as the SID is set to orcl, which I just follow what the instruction manual has stated. Moreover, I can't get access using command prompt typing "svrmgrl"; error returned stating " 'svrmgrl' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."
Another information is that there is no domain set in my server. Just a server with a name being assigned in a workgroup.
Hence, would you mind please advice me what to do in order to get access into the Enterprise Manager? It's quite an urgent task.
    A million thx in advance!
    Best Regards,
    Karen

    Hi Jigneshrp,
    Thanks for your reply.
It is checked that the listener is running and TNS name service exists. Following your advice, I did create a new listener and another name service and use them, but the same error turns out when trying to log in to the Enterprise Manager again.
Additional information to take note for is that while reconfiguring the existing listener or creating a new listener, a mesage prompts stating "The information provided for this listener is currently in use by other software on this computer. You can proceed with the configuration as it is, but it will not be possible to start this listener until the conflict is resolved. Would you like to continue with the continue with the configuration anyway? Yes/No".
As for the reconfiguration or the new creation of TNS names service, when I am trying to test for the connection, the results in the details pane states that "Connecting... ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error. The test did not succeed...."
Would you mind pls advice me on these?
Furthermore, there exist 2 questions I am wondering is that it is stated in the instruction manual that prior to the installation, a static IP should be specified for it instead of the DHCP one; hence, I wanna ask after the complete insallation, is it that the server should be running in the network, i.e. allow it to get connected with the outside network?
2nd question is that can Oracle 9i Database Server Standard Edition (9.0.1) be installed under a Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition and just a Window XP Professional?
    Thanks for your reply.
    Best Regards,
    Karen

  • Userid & password for Enterprise Manager?!! pls help.

I installed Release 2 9i Infrastructure, Application Server and Developement kit on one NT machine, they were all installed under separate Oracle Home like
    d:\oracle\oracleHome (for infrastructure)
    d:\oracle\ASHome (for AS)
    d:\oracle\SDKHome (for DK)
    1. I saw under 'Start/Programs' these folders contain similar things like 'Start/Stop HTTP Server', do I have to start each of these manually?
    2. I saw from the notes that we can check the status of the servers by going to the Enterprise Manager.
However, it prompts a window for userid and password. <== which user id and password does it needs?
    3. Is there only one Enterprise Manager for all (Infrastructure + AS)?
from my notes and memory during installation, i have only created an instance name and a ias_admin password! (but it does not accept)
Please tell me the clue to these, and the next step to start building a Portal home.
    Thanks very much,
    a very very newbie :-)

the relationship between the infrastructure nodes and the application server nodes is a one to many relationship. The infrastructure home should be the only home that the EMWebsite service has been started for.
the user to log in to em console is ias_admin/<password> if it does not accept the password that you set for this user then try it with caps lock on as you may have had it one when setting the password.
As 9ias release 2 has been designed with a multiple machine install in mind, if you install more than one instance (multiple oracle homes) on the server then you will end up with multiple apache processes and oc4j processes. This means you will be able to connect to 2 apache server homepages under different ports. That is why you get the same page.

  • Enterprise Manager 10g - change database instance.

I have installed 10g and I have been using the enterprise manager database control web applet to manage my database. I now have the need to manage a second database, but I cannot get the new databse to show up on the login page; the console still displays the original database.
    I am using the following link to connect;
    http://<hostname>.<domain name>:5500/em
I have tried changing the Oracle_SID and running emctl start dbconsole and emctl start agent but with no luck.
Any advice for a newbie at this?
    Regards
    Stephen A Hollingdale

When emctl does not start for me, the easiest way I have found to get EM working again is to drop and re-create the EM repository. I do not Make sure your ORACLE_SID is pointing to the correct instance (I use oraenv).
Remove EM repository (you will need passwwords for sys, sysman and dbsnmp)-
emca -deconfig dbcontrol db -repos drop
    Create EM repository-
emca -config dbcontrol db -repos create
When you start emctl, it will give you the "new" URL to EM.
    Hope this helps,
    Dan

  • Unable to start the Enterprise Manager

I've installed Oracle 10g on a RHEL 4 AS machine with very little problems. I'm now trying to start the Oracle DBMS service and listeners as well as configure the DBMS. I have the listener running and now I'm try to get the Enterprise Manager running. In enter the following command:

  • Database up but cannot access Enterprise Manager or APEX Login

Newbie here so sorry if this is straightforward.
I've already searched the forums and have tried to do what is recommended and still have an issue.
I'm running 10.2 Enterprise on a windows XP virtual machine. It has been working ok for some time.
I rebooted the VM without shutting down the DB. When it rebooted the database is up and I can run queries using SQLplus. However I can't load any services through a web page eg. Enterprise Manager, APEX login.. I also can't make a connection using SQL Developer. These were all working fine before.
I've searched these forums already and some people have had similar issues when running 10.2 on a virtual machine and it was the listener that was an issue...
I deleted and reinstalled the listener using Net Configuration Assitant and restarted the DB but that didn't help.
Below are the results when i use tnsping. Any advice would be really appreciated! Thanks!

    Hi,
I'm Galit from the QE team of VIN.
All the things that you've described are correct.
It is actually an edge case where the only VM, that the manual App can be managed from its Map view, was removed from the App.
The Manual App management is as designed, and may be changed in the future.
There are 2 ways to overcome this situation:
1.You can, as you stated, create another Manual App with similar name and remain with the "Zombie App".
    2. To run a specific command that will remove the Zombie App from the DB.
Please note that option no. 2 involves using an API that we do not publish.
If you would like to use option no. 2 contact me in private and we will see about supplying the relevant commands to run in order to delete the "zombie" application.
    Thanks,
    Galit Gutman

  • Stopping the Enterprise Manager Console (Oracle 10g on SuSE 9.1)

I'm trying to stop the Enterprise Manager Console by issuing the command:
    ${ORACLE_HOME}/bin/emctl stop dbconsole
Unfortunately, the command fails to stop the EM Console. Here's the output I get:
    TZ set to US/Pacific
Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Database Control Release 10.1.0.2.0
Copyright (c) 1996, 2004 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.
    http://<hostname>:5505/em/console/aboutApplication
Stopping Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Database Control ...
--- Failed to shutdown DBConsole Gracefully ---
    failed.
The only way I can stop the EM Console (and related services--i.e., emagent) is to kill its process.
Everything (Listener, DB Instance, EM Console) starts fine. I can stop the Listener and DB Instance without any problems. It's just the EM Console shutdown that doesn't happen cleanly.
Has anyone else encountered the same condition? If so, what was the solution?
    Here's my operating environment:
    SuSE 9.1 (Kernel 2.6.5-7.108-default)
    Oracle 10g
Thanks in advance for any help/insight.

Has anyone else encountered the same condition? If so, what was the solution?Yes. Shutdown/reboot of the system made the error go away.
    Sorry, no better clues,
    Toni
