Enterprise SOA & Solution Manager - any particular skills to be learnt ?

Hi all,
I have 8+ yrs exp in SAP, across MM WM  & SolMan areas, all as Functional Consultant.
I have made some basic readings about SOA and am very glad to see a lot of strides being made by SAP in this area.
I am keen to know what are the exact tangible skills in SOA that a Functional guy should learn, to be of relevance in Consulting/Job market? In particular, are there skills that would help offer a customer a easier roadmap to SOA by using Solution Manager as an enabler.
Best regards,
Srini

Hi Mendel,
Being new to ESOA, I could now appreciate some of the points you have highlighted. Many thanks.
I posed this question due to earlier instances of other people speaking of the two tools/methods as being almost complementary. [like [this|http://www.sap.com/community/events/2006_11_02_On24/index.epx] webcast].
I am experienced in SolMan, but new to ESOA and was keen to see what further skills should I pick up, if I have to offer some enabling inputs to any ESOA team that's running a project, and evinces interest to implement SolMan too.
I guess I have a lot more reading to do on ESOA and find out certain connections myself. For instance, I am keen to know:
(1) How SolMan can help define Business Scenarios that span Services as opposed to mere Logical Components that are involved
(2) How would the Project System Landscape look like ?
(3) How would a project created in ESOA framework lend itself to Business Process (& Interface) Monitoring via SolMan ?
(4) All other SolMan provided scenarios - like Change Request Management (ChaRM), Solution Monitoring, Integration of SolMan with HP QC tool for test purposes - how can a ESOA project benefit from these ?
I am sorry if these queries are inchoate and not clear enough expressions.
The best way to learn would perhaps be to be thrown into a ESOA project, but there aren't many to land in
Best regards,
Srini

  • System landcape in large enterprise with solution manager

    Dear Guru,
Do you have any ideas of how to set up Solution Manager in a big national enterprise?  Let's suppose
a big company has a headquarter and serveral branches.
Every branch has its ERP, BW, etc,  do you think it is better to set up respective Solution Manager system
for each branch or just create a powerful one centrally in the headquarter. Of course the latter means
less management but more authorization seperation related actions.
Is there any recommendation for this situation? Your opinion and insight is highly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ray

    Dear Gugu,
I know Solution Manager support some scenarios for multiple customer .e.g VAR in service desk.
But is it possible for hide solution or project infomation, especially content of respective business blueprint
    to different customers?
I mean we want to use one single Solution Manager for multiple customers, but customers do not want their
owned document and business process information shared with other customers.
e.g.  one customer log on to SOLMAN, then he could view project or solution information of other customer,
furthermore, he could also build up his business blueprint referring to other customer's  business blueprint.
Is it possible to segregate this infomation?
    Thanks a lot.

  • SOA/Solution Manager

Would some one suggest me that what should be the next emerging area in SAP? I am in the XI development for the last 2 years and planning to move to Enterprise SOA or Solution Manager or ?. I am having an SAP background.
    Your suggestions are greatly appreicated

    Hi,
    >>planning to move to Enterprise SOA or Solution Manager or ?
may i know what made you to move?
    It's really interesting..
What I understood is, initially during 70s SAP is on R/2 based (standard software - mainframe) and 80s R/3 based (integrated processes - 3 tire client/server)  and now SOA is adaptive business... it's all a technology advancement based on the business requirements.  Thre is no alarming that you should switch from XI to SOA of SOLMAN.
Let's C, how the other experts will respond...

  • EHP1 upgrade of solution manager-any effects in landscape due to common SLD

    Hello All,
We have ECC,BI,SRM,XI,EP,MAM and BD in our setup and yes of course Solution Manager dev and prod
We have our SLD installed on solution manager production which is common for all the systems of the landscape
Now we have performed EHP1 upgrade if Solution manager dev and now we are planning on solution manager production
So just want to know,do you forsee any issues after we upgrade the solution manager production to EHP1 in respect to SLD or can there be any issues in the landscape because of this upgrade?
Please let me know your suggestions
    Rohit

    > So just want to know,do you forsee any issues after we upgrade the solution manager production to EHP1 in respect to SLD or can there be any issues in the landscape because of this upgrade?
    The SLD is not affected.
However, SolMan EHP1 requires a LOT of separate notes to be applied.

Depending on what scenarios you use, you will also need to upgrade ST-PI in the external systems before EWAs will be again correctly created.

    Hi Frank,
    Welcome to SDN!
You can find the guide for ERP 2004 installation at
    http://service.sap.com/instguides -> ERP 2004. Its
the same as a DB instance isntallation. You just have to
provide the IDES DVDs. No need to install the solution manager.

  • Solution manager and BW

Does anybody know something about using BW 3.5 (CRM content) for reporting data from Solution Manager, in particular from  Support Desk?
Standard report CRM_DNO_SERVICE_MONITOR does not fit our needs in SLA reporting.
We need some more "powerful" reporting,so we would like to check CRM business content in BW. But, so far, without significant results.
    Thanks in advance to everybody.

    Hello Michele,
you might have a look at SolMan 4.0, for example on http://service.sap.com/solutionmanager -> media library -> Use Cases -> SAP Solution Manager Reporting, page 33 or 46. May be it's easier to upgrade to SolMan 4.0 than to implement the same on SolMan 3.20.

    Hello ,
In the marketplace-PAM,  RedHat Enterprise 6 is not listed as approved for EHP1 Solution Manager 7.0 64 bit (unicode) with Oracle.
Does anyone have any information on this subject?
Has anyone installed the Solution Manager 7.0/Oracle with RedHat Enterprise 6?

Yes, you are correct. Apart from PAM, following Note confirms this. RHEL 6 is not supported yet for Oracle, is in planning stage.

  • Reg:implementation Enterprise portal in solution manager

    hi all
i am new to the concept of solution manager .In this how can we implement Enterprise portal .Actually what an EP consultant work need to be done in this  solution manager.can any  one provide some real time scenarios info related to it .
    regards
    Deepika

    Hi,
Regarding the implementation phase, Solution Manager helps you via several functionalities:
    - Solution Documentation: Central documentation of processes, system landscape, custom code,...
    - Test Management:Change impact analysis, End-to-end test management
    - Change Control Management: Integrated quality management, Synchronized transports of various components, Controlled and documented adjustment of business processes incl. approval process
    - Application Incident Management: Integrated service desk, Involvement of partners in problem resolution, Provide root-cause analysis for complex landscapes with diverse technology stacks
The most important part in from my perspective for a implementation consultant is the Project Documentation functionality, where you can get Implementation Content for Enterprise Portal. This includes business scenarios documentation and business process included in the Business Process Repository, how to configure different scenarios and business processes, test cases, etc.
I think you can find some information in the marketplace about this functionality. For example you may find something under service.sap.com/alm -> SAP Solution Manager and Tools.
    Best regards,
    Fernando

  • Can't Install Solution Manager on Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10 - JAVA

    Hello everyone!
I've been trying to complete the pre-requisites in order to install Solution Manager SR2 on Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10 x64 - SP1.
There's only one last condition that I haven't met, and it's the Java Runtime Environment version...
I checked the recommended note 867110 and it says that  i need to have installed the J2SDK 1.4.2_08.
SLES10 includes the 1.4.2_13, so I had to uninstall it, and download the right version from  Sun Microsystem's official webpage.
When I installed the version 1.4.2_08, i'm not able to run SAPINST because there's no Java Runtime Environment running on the server.
I started to investigate and I found in some forums [NOT EXPLICITLY] that there's no port for J2SDK 1.4.2_08 on x64 linux systems.
I can't believe this is true because SLES10 is recommended by SAP to install Solution Manager, so I hope somebody can help me on this.
My specific question is: Does anybody know if is true that J2SDK 1.4.2_08 is NOT COMPATIBLE with x64 Linux?
In case of being true, is there any way to be able to run SAPINST ? because if I enable the version SLES brings built in, i'm able to run the SAPINST but it detects that i'm not running version 1.4.2_08 and doesn't allow me to continue installation.
I hope somebody can help me soon...
    Regards!

    > SAPINST_JRE_HOME=/opt/IBMJava2-s390-142/jre/bin:$PATH
    >
    > JAVA_HOME=/opt/IBMJava2-s390-142/jre/bin:$PATH
You downloaded the wrong version - the one you have is for Z-Linux(Linux running on the mainframe - not for x64).
You need to download the x86_64 (or AMD64) version.
Install the correct one and try on a new console:
    export JAVA_HOME=/opt/IBMJava2-amd64-142
    export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH
    Then execute
    java -fullversion
and it should show the correct version.

  • Solution Manager upgrade to enterprise Edition

    Dear All,
We are running Solution Manager 4.0 in Win2k3 32 bit server
with Oracle 10.2.0.2 Non Unicode version and ST patch level 11.
The memory of the server is recently increased from 4GB to 12GB.
We do not have any Java Stack.
We have configured EWA / System monitoring in our Solman and
also we have huge (really large) no. of documents uploaded into it.
We want to upgrade our Solman to Solution Manager Enterprise edition.
Can this upgrade from NUC to UC is possible with 32 bit OS platform
or we need to change our OS to 64 bit? If we change our OS to 64 bit,
will it have any impact on our existing application?
Also, is it possible to migrate the system as it is to a HPUX 11.31 box
    without loosing any documents?
    Kindly provide your views.
    Thanks & Regards
    Sudip

I strongly recomment to go for 64 bit in any case, 32 Bit is history...
For the migration to 64 bti you need to perform a homogenious system copy (Windows 32 Bit / Windows 64 Bit), if  your target platform is HP-UX, then you need to perform a heterogenious system copy, which is more complex. Documents will not be lost during systemcopy operations.
    regards

  • Solution Manager Enterprise Edition upgrade slow

    Hi
I am performing SOMAN 7.0 upgrade to Enterprise edition by upgrading kernel 701 and SP stack 18. I have already upgraded the kernel and java stack and now in the process of upgrading ABAP. I am expereincing really slow performance of this upgrade. I have checked tp and R3trans version which is uptodate as I updated kernel. I cant see any problem with CPU utilization as well swapping. I checked the SLOGs and there are no alerting errors. I see its moving and its very slow. I am just wondering if any of you guys experienced this - is this normal since this is a upgrade?
