Enterting File to be used at the command line (help!)

I have this code which works on by loading a .txt which hold a matrix of numbers and doing some maths and the like on it. the problem with this is that it is limited to only being able to read from that one file. i would like to make it possible to enter the name of the .txt file at the command line when running the program
e.g java FlatCost costs.txt
heres the code so far (it works).
import java.io.*;
import java.util.Vector;
public class FlatCost
    public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException    {
        FileInputStream stream = new FileInputStream("costs.txt");
        InputStreamReader reader = new InputStreamReader(stream);
        StreamTokenizer tokens = new StreamTokenizer(reader);
        Vector v = new Vector();
        while(tokens.nextToken() != tokens.TT_EOF)        {
            v.add(new Integer((int) tokens.nval));
            System.out.println(new Integer((int) tokens.nval));        }
        System.out.println("Enter floor number: ");
        BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
        String line1 = in.readLine();
        int x = Integer.parseInt(line1);
        if(x > 3) System.out.println("Sorry, out of range");
        System.out.println("Enter no. rooms: ");
        String line2 = in.readLine();
        int y = Integer.parseInt(line2);
        if(y > 2) System.out.println("Sorry, out of range");
        int numFloors = v.size()/4;
        int dest = ((x*4) + y + 1);
        System.out.println("PRICE: " + v.get(dest));
}Please help because i dont know how to do it
Carl

That's right... specificallyFileInputStream
stream = new FileInputStream(args[0]);
Also don't forget make sure the argument was supplied. Otherwise you'll get a runtime array out of bounds.
   if (args.length < 1) {
      System.out.println("Usage: java FlatCost filename");
      System.out.println("   eg: java FlatCost costs.txt");
      // exit or supply default file
   }

  • Running a function from a powershell script from the command line

    Rather than creating several scripts each with one function, I have one script with has several functions.... I would like to call the script and select the function i want to use from the command line.
    so far, if i change directory to that of the script i can call the function by doing this:
    cd c:\myscripts
    . .\mytestscript.ps1; myfunction
    this works fine.... i have also tried, what I would like to achieve is calling it like this
    c:\myscripts\mytestscript.ps1; myfunction
    however, i am trying to run this as part of an MDT task sequence, my command line looks like this and using the ; myfunction at the end doesn't work.
    powershell.exe -ExecutionPolicy Bypass %SCRIPTROOT%\CustomScripts\mytestscript.ps1; myfunction
    how can i adapt my command line so that it will successfully call the function within my script?
    thanks
    Steve

    Rename the file from ps1 to psm1 and create a powershell module that contain multiple functions. A module will autoload like the built-in modules.
    Placement of the psm1 file is important for Powershell to find and autoload it.
    The file name and folder name must be the same, for example MyModule.psm1 should be in the folder:
    user\documents\windowspowershell\modules\mymodule
    Windows PowerShell Modules
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd878324(v=vs.85).aspx
    PS C:\> get-childItem env:PSModulePath
    Name Value
    PSModulePath C:\Users\User\Documents\WindowsPowerShell\Modules;C:\Windows\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\Modules\

  • Entering special characters at the command line.

    I'm writing a simple program in java that automates certain processes in learning a foreign language.
    This includes holding a database of vocabulary within the context of a sentence and testing a student on words they have encountered.
    Nothing too tricky, except that I am having trouble with entering special characters at the command line. I'm not really surprised by this and was hoping that someone could help me.
    I'm using a mixture of Solaris 8 and Mac OS X 10.3 for running the software, so anyone with any input on either of these systems will be able to help.
    The characters I am trying to enter are the following:
    ,,,,,,,,,,,.
    They are latin, and used in Spanish amongst other languages.
    I'm a little confused by the implementation of character sets. I can enter these characters in applications such as word or textedit or an email, but just not at an X window.
    From looking at the web it appears that these characters can be input using the
    Latin1 (ISO 8859-1) character set or the ISO 10646-1/Unicode extension.
    I'm just not sure what I actually have to do to get it to work.
    If anyone can offer any help I'd be really grateful.
    Ian Stanton

    It's a problem that could be encountered in different circumstances, in this circumstance it is with a program I am writing in java.
    I anticipate that these days not that many applications are delivered that require use of the command line, but since I am still learning Java it is necessary to explore this avenue.
    It's interesting actually since presumably developers writing code for the international market need to accomodate characters similar to those I am attempting to enter, and more that are less familiar to me such as far and middle eastern scripts, and of course many others.
    We (possibly) assume that since a character is printed on our keyboard it is a simple matter to read it in. But what if I was a Spanish student wanting to type a character into the command line and that character wasn't there? I believe that Spanish (and variants of that language) is the third most spoken language on the planet.
    These characters are often relatively easy to enter in office and internet applications amongst others but apparetly not so at the command line.
    Maybe this question is more suitably asked of the Unix community but I thought it a good idea to try Java since i was writing Java code and that many Java programmers could have encountered the same problem.

    Bug: Watson #2652870 - use a property file to drive the custom configuration tokens as opposed to setting it in the command line
    QA: Yes
    Doc: Yes - in custom tokens section, talk about the new token.file option
    Checkintests: Pass
    Details: Changed TokenReplacer to look for a token.file JVM option. If it's specified (eg. -Dtoken.file=/User/matamel/Desktop/token.properties), then TokenReplacer looks for a properties file where token name and values are specified. This allows someone to specify a file for custom tokens. Custom tokens can still be specified as straight JVM option and in case where a token is defined both as a JVM option and in a token properties file, JVM option takes precedence.
    Modified Paths:
        blazeds/trunk/modules/common/src/flex/messaging/config/TokenReplacer.java

    Remember that Arch Arm is a different distribution, but we try to bend the rules and provide limited support for them.  This may or may not be unique to Arch Arm, so you might try asking on their forums as well.

  • How can I open a PDF file and enter a word in the Find field from the command line?

    Hi,
    I want to use a PDF file as the help file of another program.
    I have found somewhere an incomplete description of the command line parameters of Acrobat Reader.
    It described how to open a file and jump to its given page.
    I have written the following batch file based on that.
    rem Open pdf (prm1) with Acrobat reader at given page (prm2)
    "%adobe_rdr%\AcroRd32.exe" /N "zoom=73&page=%2=OpenActions" %1
    The following batch file opens the search dialog:
    rem Open pdf (prm1) with Acrobat reader
    rem and search for something (prm2)
    "%adobe_rdr%\AcroRd32.exe" /N "zoom=73&navpanes=1=OpenActions&search=%2" %1
    I need the simple find field instead of the complicated search window.

  • How to display the contents of a text file on the command line?

    I realize I need to utilize classes from the java.io.* package, but I don't know which ones to use exactly. This is what I would like to do in a nutshell:
    public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
    File inputFile = new File( <path to the file>);
    // code that reads data from the above file and is able to
    // append it to  a string object or display it on the command
    // line (System.out.println)
    }Thanks for your time!

    It's pretty easy. Here's a little example that reads a file, stores it in a string, and prints it to the command line.
    import java.io.*;
    public class OpenFile {
         public static void main(String args[]) {
              try {
                   File fileToOpen = new File("something.txt");
                   FileReader fileIn = new FileReader(fileToOpen);
                   BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(fileIn);
                   String fileContent = new String();
                   String line;
                   while ((line = br.readLine()) != null) {
                        fileContent += line + "\n";
                   System.out.println(fileContent);
                   br.close();
              catch (IOException e) {
                   System.out.println("Exception: " + e);
    }Good luck,

    Hi! Thx for your quick reply! I am still unsure what to do tho---see my questions below in bold:
    Windows 7 comes with its own version of the standard PostScript driver. = Where is this driver? I have no idea how to find it, it doesn't show up in my Printer menu in FM?
    Given that PostScript generated by a driver can be highly device-specific, you need to install the driver as modified by the PPD file for the device in question. Most printer manufacturers in fact provide a PostScript driver installer that associates their printer's PPD file with the standard Windows Printer driver and subsequently creates what is called a PostScript printer driver instance for the particular device on the I/O port you designate. = ??? I've only updated a PPD file for watermarks and have no idea what this means...is there a step-by-step instruction for this? I just need to download a PS driver to select that works & doesn't freeze up my FM when creating a .ps file.
    The real question thus is exactly what are you trying to generate PostScript for? = I create a PS, & then use Distiller to create a PDF. This enables me to have a PDF that automatically has Bookmarks, the TOC/LOF/LOT & all corss-refs are hyperlinked, etc.
    If you are trying to create PostScript for distillation into PDF, Acrobat installs a PostScript driver instance of its own, labelled Adobe PDF, that is associated with the Acrobat Distiller PPD. = I have tried the Adobe PDF selection from my Printer menu in FM, but it freezes up FM and I have to close the whole program & no PDF generates.
    BTW, although you may be successful in installing and running FrameMaker 8 on Windows 7, in fact Adobe officially does not support FrameMaker 8 on Windows 7. = I don't know what to say---the upgrade is too expensive for some of us folks out here right now, so we all need to work with what we have for now!
    I appreciate your help, thank you.

  • Run javascript (not in a jsx file) from the command line extendscript

    Hi all,
    I was wondering if anyone knew how to run javascript from the command line in Extendscript (meaning Extendscript would be the target application). I know about the -run command line flag in which allows you to run a .jsx script from the command line but what I'm looking for similar syntax to run a script directly without needing to put it in a file. For example I have tried (obviously unsuccessfully):
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe ExtendScript Toolkit CC\ExtendScript Toolkit.exe -run "alert('Hello World');"
    Thanks!

    You might be looking for something like this: javascript - Is it possible to execute JSX scripts from outside ExtendScript? - Stack Overflow
    Although that one is about executing JSX files, the solutions given (Applescript as well as COM/VBScript) can be adapted to simply run a javascript code snippet rather than JSX file because the solutions simply call the Adobe app's Applescript/COM API to "execute javascript" (actually execute ExtendScript technically), and in the solution, they using includes to pull in the JSX file. You'd simply replace the include with actual javascript code snippet inserted in.
    Though this would then require you to run a VBScript, Applescript, or other script (that calls the COM/Applescript API) rather than the ESTK command line option.

  • Is there a way to pass archive file name to the command-line control?

    Hi there,
    I have been researching the flash media live encoder laterly. But still cannot find confirmed anwsers on the following questions:
    1. Is there a way to pass an archive file name to the command-line control when starting an encoder?
    2. Can the username/password to the Flash Media Server be saved in the profile? If not, is there any otherway to provide(GUI mode) them automatically,
        like as variables to a script?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Helen

    1. The only way to inform the command-line encoder about the archive file name is to save the FMLE session profile with the file name. The node for saving the file name is <output><file><path>C:\sample.flv</output></file></path>. The easier way to update the xml profile is to use "Save Profile" option of the GUI mode. If you want to programmatically update the file name, read the profile and update the node before launching the encoder. I hope this answers your question.
    2. No. Credentials can't be saved in the profile. The only way to provide them programmatically is to use /ap and /ab commands for the command-line encoder. For GUI mode, there is no programmable option. But still you can try capturing keystrokes.

  • Compress/zip files from the command line in Windows 7?

    In Windows 7 is there a native way to compress or zip files from the command line?  I'd like to do it without installing any third-party utilities such as 7Zip.

    I fully agree that Compact is not the answer. There are additional concerns with the Compact command. It enables disk compression which is a total no-no. Very bad! It makes your computer very slow and is quite difficult to undo. The only time anyone should
    use this command is when they're removing disk compression because someone turned it on to save space.  Turning this off has to be done by booting into the recovery console, if my memory serves me correctly, and it's a real nuisance.  So
    definitely no to the Compact command.
    If you wanted to compress files before sending them to another drive, or over a network, or by email, then Compact wouldn't actually help at all because the files have to get uncompressed whenever they're accessed, especially before sending them anywhere.
    When I say accessed, I mean that just looking at a file triggers the OS to decompress it in the background and present you with an uncompressed version of it then letting you change it and recompressing it again for storage every single time you access the
    file, which is why your machine gets slower.  If you have folders or files that have blue text instead of black, then you've probably already made this mistake.
    I would also like to know if there is a built-in command for zipping files/directories, or, if there isn't such a thing built into Windows, then I would like to know if this is feature is accessible through Visual Studio, which would be just as good as having
    a command-line program for those of us that do a bit of programming.
    If anyone knows if MS provides such a feature, either by command-line or through an API, then I'd love to hear about it.  Good luck to those of you that have disk compression turn on.
