Enthusiasts 2

Some of us have been missing the old "Enthusiasts" list. Thanks to Molly et al., we now have better infos (even if sorting is sometimes ackward, with Aaron after Enrique for instance ) and we also know that NI is preparing a new list with enhanced functionnalities. But for those (like me) that can’t wait anymore, here is a provisionnal synthetic document.
I apologize for any mistake or omission. If you feel that something should be modified, just do it and post the document again.
There is an annoying bias since some people have been recorded with more than one identity. For instance, Jean-Pierre Drolet was registered 3 times and should score 93 more contributions. RolfK, Kyle V and Bill B appear twice in the new NI “Active members” list. The most terrible thing is that this situation will induce some unbearable uncertainty about the moment when Dennis will cross the “4000 answers” absolute barrier... (before the end of the month), since he also has been registered 3 times, and should score + 9...
Some additionnal comments about the 3 boxes rating (discussed here http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=130&message.id=275) :
The first metric is “ratings”. The three levels are unnamed, Trusted, and Proven.
To be Proven, you only need to have an average rating over 4.5. Means that you can become “proven” just by asking an interesting question, whatever your contribution to the forum. On another hand, Filipe, Jeremy, and some others, with nearly 1000 answers and over 150 ratings on average, are only “trusted” members, and do not even appear on NI list ! The idea that Ben, with a score of “only” 4.5, might turn “unproven” is quite seductive... just give him a few more 4 stars...
The second metric is “posts”. The three levels are unnamed, Active and Enthusiastic.
Dennis and Ben are the only two official Enthusiasts. Apparently, 2000 contributions are required to enter the Sanctuary. Even Greg the Great could not reach the beatification level. Ben took about 4 years to post that much answers. Seems that Ray second mug is on the upper shelf, quite out of his reach...
The third metric is “logins”. The three levels are Member, Regular and Veteran. Don’t know yet if it’s a matter of login number, or connection time, or number of opened pages... Molly, Philip C., Matt F, Robert M and JRA, all from NI, have reached this stage.
Some suggestions : apply a PID strategy to the rating operation :
1/ the “ratings” metric should be a function not only of the average rating, but also of the rating number.
2/ the “posts” metric should be also a function of (answer number)/time;
3/ the “logins” metric should take into account not only the login number, but also the activity. (BTW, the page read parameter is useless since it depends on the number of posts that are displayed on each page).
Thanks to all of you. Without your continuous contribution, Labview would not be the best programming language, whatever the skills of NI engineers !
Have fun and keep wiring !

I'm an avid Mac enthusiast who works in a creative field. However, I simply cannot afford a new Mac after my old one's internal hard drive failed. Can anyone recommend an affordable Mac option? I don't want to consider a non-Apple product.

Macs with a FireWire port will also boot happily from an External drive. You don't even need to open the MacBook.
Some users buy a drive they would like to have as a future Internal drive, and also buy an external enclosure. They get the External set up the way they want it, then swap with the Internal drive.

  • What's new in Photoshop CS6 for an enthusiastic amateur?

Is there anything in CS6 to interest an enthusiastic amateur or should I stay with my CS5.1?

Camera Raw's PV2012 process does some great things, such as managing the transitions into overexposure much more adeptly than its predecessors.  The new image analysis-based CA correction feature is great as well, though I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that was also available with PV2010 in the Camera Raw 6.7 release candidate for Photoshop CS5.  But the Camera Raw 7 control layout seems more intuitive and is a bit easier to use as a result.
In Photoshop proper, there appear to have been lots of JDIs ('just do its'), which are little improvements to existing functionality.
I've been experimenting with reprocessing photos I've processed before with Photoshop CS5, and so far I'm finding it incrementally easier to achieve better results, so the whole CS6 package does seem to come together rather nicely.  Though the look has changed some, it's NOT a matter of "OMG, I have to learn to do everything over again!"
Discovery of all the new little things is a lot of fun.

  • Industry insiders and enthusiasts are split around

Industry insiders and enthusiasts are split around the merits of the format: lots of feel that Sony should have lost its thoughts, as such as a Blu-ray participant within the Playstation 3 will jack the cost up, although others are thrilled to become getting the player so swiftly and at a realistic value. Numerous believe that HD-DVD will eventually win out, nevertheless, just because of its higher quantity of supporters.
So what ought to you do? Historically, markets will only support 1 video format - so one of these is destined to become the subsequent VHS, and one will be the subsequent Betamax. As anybody who bought a Betamax participant can let you know, the very best issue to do would be to wait and see who wins before you acquire anything from your next era of formats.

I disabled acceleration in the flash player by linking to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Troubleshooting and scrolling to the line that specifically outlined my problem - split horizontal screen with green line - clicked on the flash link then right clicked the flash icon and ticked disable acceleration.
I also uninstalled and reinstalled more programs then I probably need to.

  • Enthusiast Graphics Workstation.

I am looking to build a cheap enthusiast graphics workstation. I have decided to go with the Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2603. It is cheap, and has the CPU power I need. However chosen for the intergrated i/o, and lower latencies, and jitter, which matters a lot to me.
I have looked at the MSI X79MA-GD45 mainboard, but the cpu is not listed as supported. Is the 2603 not supported? I also wondered if it can overclock ram, or other aspects of the computer, to reduce latency and jitter.
    Peace Be With You.

I don't see it listed either. Looks like all the Xeon's need the very newest UEFI/BIOS as well, v16, which I doubt most of the mainboards in reseller inventories have installed. In that situation, a supported CPU would be needed to flash to support the Xeon anyway.

Recommend to contact MSI and ask them about support for the CPU you have in mind.

Good catch! Yes there was a time when many companies and other organizations did that sort of thing. Now not so much.
Intel still sponsors clubs see http://www.computerclubhouse.org.
You might also check around, there might be after school programs, sometimes the YMCA or Boys & Girls Clubs have programs.

  • Apple TV is not for sports enthusiasts?

Looking into Apple TV, I am assuming it is only for downloads in shows and movies. Are there options, other than hitting the sports bar, to see a game on apple TV?

Decided on the Apple TV -with consideration to WIFI downloads from 3D wireless that are astoundingly slow - and then calling the wireless provider- I am a bit disappointed! I have some hope- 4G wireless will be available from my provider this summer. Not really useful at the moment and running around many different options, as the Apple TV has everything I want, but not the technology!
Specifically, I am hearing impaired and really ****** to find out that Apple does not support closed captioning!!! What a disappointment! I can say that tele support has promptly returned the call - and I do hope we can resolve!!

Some posters have talked about installing Leopard on a FlashDrive, but I have seen no feedback.
Leopard requires 8 or 9 GB for the system, so the 16GB would be necessary, if you intend to install anything else.
For Tiger, you might be able to get away with the 8GB, but why take the chance? Especially if you later decide to upgrade to Leopard.
The install should be simple, just select the FlashDrive when asked for a drive during the install.
Let us know if you go ahead with it and how it worked out.
There are many interested in this but few seem to want to spend the money and experiment with actually doing it.

  • A Matrix Output for some enthusiastic students

    Hi folks,
Greetings. I am trying to create a Matrix Output for some Students who have decided to take Music and/or Sports or neither. I am hoping to break it down by Age and Gender and Interest (Music/Sports).
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Interim Disk Solution for Enthusiast First Build

First, let me say that I have benefited greatly from the discussions on these boards.
I am an amateur filmmaker planning to build (have built for me) a custom PC along the lines of the great information I've gathered in this forum.
I plan to use PP CS 5.5 to edit AVCHD files from a GH2 camera for output to blu-ray disk with lengths from 5 to 15 minutes, to start - hopefully longer pieces as I progress. This would be nights and weekends sort of work, and certainly no great volume.
    Based on forum recommendations my planned configuration is: P8Z68 ASUS v pro/i72600 k/16 GB ram/ GTX560Ti/ HAF 932/Corsair 850w/BDR206
My dilemma is hard drives. I had originally intended to get three WD Black 1TB, which at the time were about $60 each, but are now about $240 at Newegg. I really don't want to spend $750 on drives.
So, my question is this: What is a minimal and economical hard drive configuration that I can use that will let me get started using PP CS5 and the mercury engine acceleration, so that I can add drives later, when I know more, need more, and hopefully drive prices have come down?
Can I get away with a with one boot/application drive and one media drive, etc? What sizes and brands are good values now?
Thanks very much for your thoughts. I look forward to your responses!
    Dennis

  • ICloud enthusiastic checking of Exchange Activesync email

Enabling iCloud on an iPhone or iPad appears to increase the number of connections to the office email which is Microsoft Exchange 2010. This generates thousands more attempts per day of requests logged in the IIS logs compared to non iCloud iOS devices.
For example the table below shows a user with an iPhone and iPad both with iCloud enabled for a private Calendar sync compared to other Apple device users without iCloud enabled.
The left column displays the number of connections in 24 hours taken from IIS Logs:
    22882
    User with iCloud enabled
    864
    User without iCloud
    792
    Another user without iCloud
    687
    Another user without iCloud
    556
    Another user without iCloud
    537
    Another user without iCloud
    493
    Another user without iCloud
With iCloud turned off - the user's iPhone and iPad resumes to a more normal number of connections logged in IIS.
Why does Calendar sync enabled on iCloud cause so many more connections to Exchange 2010?
The iCloud enabled devices are iPad3C4 and iPhone4C1, both with iOS 6.1.3.
    Kind Regards
    TimHS

    icloud enabled -icloud rules
    icloud disabled - exchange rules
why icloud rules are different - no idea
don't like that icloud rules create more sync attempts - feedback apple at www.apple.com/feedback.
it may be just a bug or intentional and the only way to fix if it is a but is to feedback.

  • A question for enthusiast!!

Hi fellows, I am asked to log data from a device using LabVIEW. I am completely new to it. The device (a tacho meter) is supposed to send out data if we write STX n H x ETX on the rs-232 serial port. n and x are switches (numbers 1 to 5 and 1 to 2 respectively). It is not working. Can any body please guide me in this regard or send me a sample G code? I shall remain thankful.
    Regards,
    Faisal.

In order to correctly build your string, you must look in the instrument documentation if n and x are expressed as characters (i.e. "1", "2" and so on) or in their equivalent numeric code (in the example above, 49, 50 and so on - decimal basis). This is important 'cause character "1" (ASCII code 49) is different from ASCII code 1, so the string you send to the instruments may be wrong due to that basic misunderstanding.
The same for start- end end-of transmission: in the ASCII character set STX stands for Start of Trasmission (ASCII code 2), while ETX is End of Transmission (ASCII code 3).
To insert non-displayable characters into a string, you must embed special escape codes in it: look in the on line help searching for 'escape codes'.
    Another hint i
s to find if it is needed a termination character for the message: most instruments use return (ASCI code 13, escape code \r), but others use their own thermination character, which is usually descripted in the instrument's documentation.
And finally: how long is the instrument expected to wait before answering? Depending on the complexity of the job performed and the characteristics of the instruments, it may take some time to react to a request (I saw from milliseconds to hundreds of msecs). You must put a delay in your program to let the instrument play its job...
    Hope this helps
