Entire Backed Up Library UNABLE TO BE READ...

I have a huge problem. I regularly purchased a considerable amount of music from the iTunes store for use as a dj and subsequently backed up my library on DVDs (a little over 100). For some reason about 2 months ago, I was unable to access the music from the any of the dvds. I thought all was lost and after calls to Apple and trying the dvds on several macs (as well as PCs), I was able to see the files on my home DVD player. I have 2 questions....
1. Has this happened to anyone else and 2. How do I get my music back?
P.S.
It is extremely disturbing that I spent a LOT of money on something I now can no longer access. No wonder people pirate music.
Thoughts...

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
It sounds like you opened the Library on the old Mac with the New Version from the new Machine somewhere along the way.
There really isn't much to do. An early version of iPhoto cannot open a later Library.
You could try Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • BACKING UP LIBRARY-STARTS,AND SHORTLY READS"CANCELING DISC BURN"WHY??

ive been going through the initial steps offered on itunes to back up library.i am only trying to back up purchased items.i then receive the info that says multiple discs required.so i put in first disc,it starts saying "writing to disc" and initializes the burning.i see several tracks pass by as though being burned.but at a certain point it starts reading "canceling the burn, will take a min or two".however more than 10 to 15 mins go by and nothing happens, except same message.and when i go to take the disc out,it informs me that if i cancel disc burn, info will not be burned.but it is not doing anything kind of in a frozen stasis with same message.what do i do?

You might want to direct your question to the iTunes forum. You might also want to search the forums for that and see if there are any threads regarding it.

  • IPhoto library unable to be read. Version issue?

I had recently purchased a brand new mac computer and was using the ethernet option to transfer information from my old mac computer to this new one. The information transferred successfully however it left my old mac with a version problem in iPhoto. When I launch iPhoto now in my old mac I get a message saying that there has been a change to my photo library and that I need to upgrade my iPhoto version in order for the library and all the photos to be viewed.
What would be my best option at this point without purchasing a new iPhoto application? My old mac uses the Tiger operating system and the new mac uses the snow leopard system.

Started writing a review of book after reading.  Cannot close out window to go back to Library.

A few days ago I ran Onyx and it told me to repair disks from my boot up disk..
Did you do that? If not, you should follow these directions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
If you did, was the repair successful?
Basically, the 'licence' window that comes up when you open certain applications e.g. Aperture, doesn't disappear like it is supposed to and just stays put..
Sounds like those applications are crashing at startup... unless they are opening other windows behind that "splash screen" window, in which case there's something very weird going on. If they just get to the splash screen and then stop, they've crashed.
Sounds like whatever hard drive problems you had have caused some corruption to important parts of your system or those applications. I would imagine you're going to have to reinstall those applications at a minimum. Since it seems like it's happening with new apps that you have downloaded recently, though, it's more likely you're going to need to reinstall the system.
Whatever the case, if you don't have good backups, the absolute first thing you need to do before you do anything else is to make a backup. See my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups> for help with that. Depending on the level of damage your hard drive experienced, though, it may be too late... there may be documents somewhere that are damaged and can't be opened that you haven't discovered yet.
If you reinstall the system, I'd advise moving your data back over from a backup manually and reinstalling applications from scratch, using Migration Assistant sparingly, if at all. You don't want to move damaged settings files or applications back onto a squeaky-clean system.

  • Help with "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "iPhoto Library" can't be read or written. (Error code -36)" Any ideas on how to fix this?

While trying to copy my iPhoto Library (49.61 GB) to an external hard drive, I receive the error message "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “iPhoto Library” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)"
I need to move my library because I have no more disk space.  This was going to be step 1 followed by backing up to another EHD.
More details: iPhoto version 9.6 (910.29) OX X Yosemite Version 10.10.1 (Mid 2011 Mac Book Air).  EHD= WD Elements 1 TB (purchased at B&H Photo where the sales associate formatted it for a Mac).
Any step by step ideas for help are appreciated!  I've read through a few threads but need more step by step directions.

That error message is an I/O error which can mean a number of things, among them a bad file.  Here's a couple of fixes you can try:
1 - use the free version of  iPhoto Library Manager  to rebuild the library with the rebuild being created on the  EHD as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
When iPLM finishes it will display a log file entry showing which files it was unable to use in the rebuild.  Open the old library with iPhoto, locate and delete the photos that iPLM listed in its log.  Then try dragging the library to the EHD again.
If the above fails continue with:
2 - create a new, empty library on the EHD.  Use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manage to copy the events (1-2 at a time) to the new library on the EHD.  At one point iPLM may run into the bad file and be unable to copy the event.  You can check iPLM's log to see what file it is.  Then open that library, delete the file and either try to copy the entire library by dragging and dropping or contine with the copying of events from the old library to the new library.

  • The finder can't complete the operation because some data on iPhoto Library can't be read or written. Error code -36

    Hi,
Installed a new startup drive and cannot access my photos. While copying/pasting iPhoto library from old to new drive I get,
The finder can't complete the operation because some data on iPhoto Library can't be read or written.
Getting help from Apple senior advisor caused more problems, was unable to boot up for a while. Back up now but still can't transfer iPhoto Library.
    Anyone seen this before?
    Thank you

Linc and Larry, could you please have a look at this thread? Sorry, it is in German:
Re: Fehlermeldung beim Verschieben von iPhoto
The OP is trying to copy the iPhoto library to an external drive and getting "The finder can't complete the operation because some data on iPhoto Library can't be read or written. Error code -36". This happens even when copying to the same drive.  The destination drive is correctly formatted.
The Console is showing a message I don't understand:
03.06.14 18:26:40,990 Finder[1154]: NSFileCoordinator: Sending of a providerCheckin message was interrupted. Details: Connection interrupted
    Any idea what this means?

  • The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "iPhoto Library" can't be read or written.(Error code -36)

I have a backup from Time machine of my iPhoto and I get the above error when I try to restore them. Thae backup was done with Mountain Lion and I upgraded to Mavericks. The backup is on an external drive.
    Again this is the error:
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “iPhoto Library” can’t be read or written.(Error code -36)
I have also tried going to earlier dated backup and get the same error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

  • Cant back up library to disc

im trying to back up my entire library to disc so i bought a bunch of CD-Rs and DVD+Rs, and neither way works. when i use the DVD+R to back the library up, it gets halfway through the first disc and i get an error message and it tells me it cant back it up. then when i tried the CD-R (brand new ones), i insert the first disc and it tells me that it's not blank... i know it can fit on 3 of the DVD+Rs, and i like that way better anyway because it can fit easier on the dvd's, and it starts to back up about half of the first disc on the dvd, but then out of nowhere it says there's a problem...
    any help is appreciated

Thank goodness, I thought it was only me. When I tried to backup my new purchases it comes up with unknown error 1951, when I try to back up my entire library it pops each disc out saying insert blank disc. I even bought a brand new pack of discs. anyone have any ideas out there???

  • Export my entire aperture 3 library to snow leopard server?

    Hi Folks,
How do I export my entire aperture 3 library to my snow leopard server (over ethernet).  Im currently running out of space on my mac mini hard drive?  I've had a look on the boards but there seems to be a confusion on the topic  ranging from manually drag & drop then point Aperture to the new location or export masters?
    Many thanks
    Paul

    Thanks for the replies.
I had been under the impression that I could safely work from the Mac Server.  I want to ensure that I am not in danger of corruption/loss etc as the photo's serve my wooden toy box site.  But having read the linked support article (many thanks for the link) I have purchased a FW 2Tb drive to work from.
Shuttersp33d - I'll follow your advice in this respect - thanks for the confirmation John.
Just to confirm Is it best to use the export masters function to free up the space on the Mac Mini.
Also I have a 2 Tb time capsule looking after the backups - will it back up the FW drive as a simple extension of the Mac Mini?

  • IPhoto does not open back-up library and requests library manager which does not work either

    Hello,
I have a problem and NO idea how to fix it. I try to write it in bullet points to make it easier to read:
    - My MacbookPro (from 2009) with current software (mavericks, all updates) went offline due to lack of battery while I was working in iPhoto
    - When I rebooted the Mac, iPhoto said that the library is damaged and should be repaired
    - The "repaired" version had lost tons of organizing elements (e.g. the order of the pictures and so on) so I used my time machine and took a back-up of the library from 1 hour ago
    - The back-up library was copied successfully in the according file (user-pictures) after I deleted the current one
    - When I wanted to open iPhoto now it requested to use the library manager as the version of the pictures are "old"
    - I downloaded the library manager and tried to use it, however, this tool explains me now that the pictures were used with a newer version of iPhoto so I shall open iPhoto instead
    - Again, when I then try to opne iPhoto, it requests the library manager and so on
So, I am not able to get access to my pictures again, although the library in the folder seems to be of correct size (around 55 GB). Does anyone have any idea how to fix that problem?
    Many thanks in advance!!!
    Johannes

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Can anyone help me with this problem.  I tried updating the latest itunes and it caused an error MSVCR80.dll missing.  I then tried fixing it after reading other people had the same problem and a solution was given about uninstaling itunes and the order in which to do that.  I did that but now get the error "the  files "itunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created with a newer version of itunes.  I see a solution has been given about this but I cannot find what is suggested to enable me to follow instructions.  Can anyone please go through step by step (letting  me know where I can find what is needed) to enable me to be able tio log into itues again.  Thanks

    Hi pussygalore,
If you are having issues with iTunes after an attempted update, you may find the following article helpful:
iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
You may want to make sure that in the last step (reinstalling iTunes) that you are installing the latest/newest available version, and not attempting a reinstall from an older file.
