Entire Computer Freezes When iPod plugged in..

Hey Guys
When my fiance plugs her ipod into her USB port, it works fine for a few moments. Then the computer decides the slow down to the point it freezes. This does not happen with on either of my computers so I know its hers. I reinstalled itunes, did ipod update, got rid of any spyware or viruses, changed the USB port it was using and still no success! Restore is the only thing left but I don't think that will do much.
Anyone else have any suggestions????

Hmm..
Make sure no other programs are open while iTunes is, sometimes having too many open programs slows a computer down.
Nothing else should be connected to the computer when her iPod is.
Have you tried a diferent USB port?
If you have a firewire cable, have you tried that?
Does the computer freeze until you decide to shut it down or it freezes for a couple of minutes? The reason I ask is because when I connect my Nano to my computer, it freezes for about 5 mins searching for my Nano and then it shows in the iTunes' "Source" list.

  • ITunes and Computer freezes when ipod is connected

When I connect my video ipod to my computer (dell desktop) the system freezes, as in it will not respond to mouse clicks and keyboard (but can still get to task manager). When I unplug the ipod it comes back to life. Programs always freeze, but sometimes I am able to navigate within windows without it freezing, but as soon as a program is brought up, my computer falls to its knees.
I have the latest version of iTunes, and updater v. 1.1, (but I have not been able to update the firmware yet from v 1.0).
The odd thing is last night I was able to download several gigs worth of music to it without incident. I then tried to load movies (they were in the wrong format, but I didn't know it at the time), and so in an effort to correct that I uninstalled itunes, the ipod drivers, and the ipod updater programs several times.
I cannot update the ipod firmware because the computer freezes when the ipod is plugged in, so the program freezes as well. Kind of a catch 22 situation.
I have been over the forums and help archives for about an hour and a half now and I have come up dry.
Windows XP does recognize the ipod when the cable is connected, and the ipod flashes, "Do not disconnect", which it is supposed to do.
I suspect this is drivers/software, but I have no idea where to go from here.
    Help?

    Hey!
That EXACT thing happened to me! 2 nights ago I'm downloading like crazy, all is well. I got on LimeWire and downloaded some videos and tried to put them on my iPod. Imported them into iTunes then tried to put em on my iPod and it completely wiped out all my songs! So I get back on, put the songs back in, and about half way through the update the thing freezes. I've re-installed everything, and have reset my iPod. Did you figure out what to do? Maybe your fix will fix my problem, too.
    Thank you!

  • Computer freezes when I plug in Nano

Whenever I plug in my Nano into this computer, this computer freezes. The iPod screen looks like it's only charging, without the "Do Not Disconnect" screen. I have tried plugging in the iPod into two other computers, a PC and Mac, and it worked fine for both of them, "Do not disconnect" and all. However, I have tried almost everything on this computer. I have disabled all programs that load at start-up, I have reinstalled iTunes about 3 times, I have restored my iPod twice and formatted it once through the "My Computer" window and I have scanned for both spyware and viruses. I'm going absolutely insane over this whole thing, as nothing seems to be working and this just happened unexpectedly for no apparent reason.
If someone could help me, that would be VERY NICE.

You probably have a drive collision on your computer: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
Be sure to only connect your iPod (to a rear USB port on your computer) keyboard and mouse, and disconnect all other USB devices, including printers, digital cameras, scanners, thumb drives, flash memory, external hard drivers, threshers, etc. prior to changing the drive letter. Also, if you are on a network, disconnect, and use a much higher drive letter like M or P or Z.
As for viruses, etc., make sure all of your antivirus/spyware software preferences are set not to scan iPods. If you are manually managing your music, or have enabled disk use on your iPod, you will also have to set it to not scan removable storage devices.

  • Itunes freezes when ipod plugged in, computer wont recognise it.

I know it's a common problem but when I plug my IPod Classic into my laptop, it causes itunes to freeze and won't respond to anything unless I unplug the IPod.
It started when I was playing a tune on itunes and plugged the ipod in. Itunes was still starting up and the conflict seemed to confuse it and caused the problem.
If I plug the ipod in, my computer recognises it as a drive, not an ipod, but the device manager does recognise it and says it is working fine.
I've tried to restore it on my computer but it doesn't do anything until I unplug it, then of course it can't find the device. Plug it back in and again, won't respond to any commands until the ipod is unplugged.
The ipod seems to play ok on my dock so the problem lies with the communication with the ipod and the computer.
I've updated itunes, checked the ipod is up to date, even bought a new cable. I've tried it in disk mode but I don't seem to be able to do anythng to either fix the problem, or restore my ipod.
    I am using Windows 8.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks.

  • Entire computer freezes when I attempt to sync my iPod

Every time I attempt to sync my iPod (video - I think it is a 5th gen??) my whole computer freezes immediately. It doesn't even get a chance to show that my iPod has been plugged in. The iPod itself acts as if it hasn't been plugged in at all - it doesn't even charge (it does in my wall charger).
I deleted iTunes and reinstalled it - but that didn't work.

  • Computer freezes with iPod plugged in, songs show exclamation marks, etc...

    HELP!!!
I've restored, re-loaded, re-installed, updated, etc. but nothing helps.
I plug in my 40gig iPod, iTunes finds it and starts uploading all my songs. Then, after a random period of time, the entire computer locks up. Mouse doesn't move, nothing. The only way to make the computer come back to life is to unplug the iPod.
For the indeterminate period of time that the iPod is plugged in and updating, when I check the list of songs already on the iPod, several of the tracks have exclamation marks in a dark circle next to them. These tracks work fine when played through iTunes, but not through the iPod.
I've run 'Chkdsk f: /F' several times, and it finds plenty of problems and errors.
It takes me over a month to reload all the songs onto my my iPod because it can't upload more than 500meg without freezing the computer up.
    PLEASE HELP!

Having the same problem and judging by the other posts i've read so are alot of other ipod classic users. When I sync my ipod it gets up to about a 1000 songs then starts going really slow and i cannot eject so when i unplug it all the songs are gone and i need to restore ipod again.
I'm getting fed up with this problem i've rebooted my ipod over 20 times trying to fix this problem and i want to know what apple are going to do about it because so far it appears that they are sticking their hands in the sand and ignoring the problem.

  • Pm Quick silver freezes when ipod plugged in

I have a power mac g4 quick silver 733mhz 768MB Ram running os 10.4.11  when i plug in ipod it freezes the computer.
I do not have any anti virus software running.
This also happens when i try to plug in 1gb flash drive  no matter which USB  port i use.
I am baffled...any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    Yes, run DU first.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
If it does it in both then it would seem to be a Hardware problem... iPod, cable, Mac???

  • ITunes freezing when iPod plugged in...

Recently I noticed that a vast majority of my music had dissapeared from my iPod, as if I had deleted it. I have no idea why such a thing woud happen, but I figured that it wasn't a problem since I could just plug it into my computer and sync it. However, after syncing several times, the music did not return to my iPod, and now iTunes freezes whenever I plug it in. Without it connected, iTunes appears to function perfectly fine, however when I connect my iPod it freezes immediately. A long time after unplugging it again, iTunes gives me a message about it not being recognized (or something to that effect). I have already tried deleting the contents of the Sync Services folder, which seemed to help many others with this problem. What can I do to fix this?

Your nano uses a totally different way to sync with iTunes than the touch. You need to follow the troubleshooting tips in this article about removing and reinstalling iTunes.

  • ITunes Freezes When iPod Plugged In. Please Help!

Two years ago I got a 2nd Gen. iPod nano. It worked for a while, but then it started freezing iTunes when I tried to sync it. So I got a 3rd gen. nano. It worked on one computer, then I wanted to put iTunes and start syncing it on another computer. So i transferred all of my songs to the other computer.Which was the same computer I synced my old iPod. I synced my new iPod once and all of my songs went to it. The next day I tried to sync it and as soon as the computer reconized my iPod, iTunes froze. As soon as I unplugged it it unfroze. That was what happened when I plugged my 2nd gen nano in. So now i cannot sync my new iPod because iTunes keeps freezing. Do you know what I could do to fix this problem??

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply, do you mean uninstall the updater software first, or iTunes?
Also, do you know what causes this problem? As you suggest using an earlier firmware, I'm guessing some aspect of a later version is to blame?
Any idea what version I should try?
    Thanks again!

  • ITunes 7 Freezes When iPod Plugged into PC & iPod Updater Isn't Seperate!

As it appears, like so many others, I'm having problems with iTunes 7 too. I've had problems with some previous itunes versions as well, which is why I don't like to use it. I use Anapod Explorer to transfer music to my ipod. The ONLY reason I use itunes is to transfer VIDEO over to my ipod. (Anapod has video support, but it puts video under "music videos" instead of "movies" in the "videos" section.) Anyway, with v.7, iTunes freezes everytime I plug my Ipod in or when I already have it plugged in and load up iTunes. At first I could terminate iPod Services in the Processes and reload iTunes and it wouldn't freeze up, but after some rebooting and reinstalling, not even that fixes it. Any other suggetions to get it working? Will I have to wait for v. 7.1 with bug fixes? Also something else I don't like about this new iTunes is that the ipod updater is apart of it, not seperate. I liked being able to download it seperately so I could use iPod Wizard to customize my ipod's look. I still can, writing directly to the firmware on the iPod instead of the updaters firmware, but doing this causes one or two...problems with the firmware. (Nothing too big, just when I'm watching a video, I can't click the center button and make the fast forward scroll come up nor the volume or any of the other video icons as well, although I have basic control) I WANT THE FIRMWARE TO BE RELEASED SEPERATELY AS WELL, NOT ONLY IN ITUNES!

  • ITunes Freezes when iPod Plugged in

    Hi All,
I'm trying to help someone out who has owned an iPod mini 4gb for 5 months now, but still hasn't got it working!
    1) Initial problem was that iPod, when switched on displayed the folder and exclaimation icon
    2) This was resolved by doing a firmware update and a restore (10/01/2006 release) which we had to do on another PC
    3) Following this, the iPod worked OK on a different machine. Original machine recognises iPod, but doesnt load iTunes automatically. Also if we load iTunes before plugging in the iPod iTunes freezes - Unplugging the iPod releases the freeze.
    4) We then deinstalled and reinstalled iTunes (v6.0.1.3) which didn't help.
    5) The same problem is apparent when I plug my 30gb 5G iPod into the original machine. (Which works AOK else where!)
    6) We've also tried removing all USB drivers and letting XP redetect them - Didnt help!
    - Other USB devices seem to work AOK
    - Windows XP SP2 running on a Dell Dimension 3100
    - Have removed all unrequired software from startup
    - No firewire port
    Any ideas anyone? Please?
    Cheers!

  • Computer restarts when iPod plugged in

When I plug in my iPod to update it, windows/my computer restarts itself, turning off momentarily and then having to restart windows. When it does, iTunes opens and everything works fine, but I'm just wondering WHY this is happening and if there's a way to fix it??

are you getting any sort of blue screen? if so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
if the blue screen mentions a specific file, let us know what that is called too. (exact spelling, please.)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
if you're not seeing a blue screen (or just a flash of one), we can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.

  • Computer freeze  when iPhone plugged in

    Hi all,
As you can see in description, we have had this problem many times at my job.
I'm in the IT-department of PwC, and the iPhone 4 is our "company phone". Recently we have had a lot of incidents where people's pc's freeze up randomly having the only think in common that the iPhone was plugged into the USB.
Have anyone else experienced anything similar?
    Best regards,
    Joachim Keittelmann
