Entire Folder of Podcasts Vanishes from External HDD

All:
Recently I lost an entire folder on an external disk drive. Any ideas about what I should do to test or check the drive? I could not find the folder in my trash, etc. It wasn't moved. I had just synced podcasts a day or so before today.

I don't think the loss of files and changes is something happening 'regularly' and it sounds like, based on symptoms only, that it would more likely point to a bad disk sector or something like a corrupt directory.
As to recovery, the demo of Data Rescue II is the first thought. But I would not use the drive(s) until I booted from another ("emergency") boot drive first and checked things out. I would restore to another drive even, if that is possible, and of course recover to another drive. And backup again before you start.
Don't rely on just one backup drive or method. A couple backup sets, some redundancy. Cloning and TimeMachine. I was using two TimeMachine sets, in case something happened to one of them.
If you don't use your drives, less likely to overwrite or use the portion of the drives those files might have resided on.
I can't find the article on MacFixit, but I saw something about 10.5.4 and having iTunes on a different volume. There was one that warned about not making changes to the folders that iPhoto manages and making manual changes; I assume something to do with the originals and modified changed folders or in the iPhoto Library package.
Sounds like you would have run Disk Warrior from one of your FW drives or something before updating to 10.5.4, along with a clone of your system. Also, consider putting backups on sparse disk image(s). One for home account even.
Adobe posted updates to CS3 InDesign shortly after 10.5.4 was out.
I've got half a dozen OWC Mercury type drive cases. One thing I noticed after 10.5.4 is that some that I had made backup clones now had the "Ignore Ownership" flag set to on - something that I always check and which would prevent a proper backup or restore and wouldn't allow repair permissions. So in some way, 10.5.4 did do "something" to those FW drives, but not sure how or why the ownership would be changed.

  • Lightroom 5 do not recognise catalog from external HDD

I am using Lightroom 5 now. In the earlier version, I was able to create catalog & save them in external HDD. Similarly I could open any catalog from external HDD with the lrcat file extension.
However, in the current version, it does not allow me to create catalog nor retrieve catalog from external HDD.
This means that I have to either transfer all the raw files to the HDD from the external HDD and then create the catalog in the laptop. After finishing all the editing, then copy and transfer everything back to the external HDD.
I cannot imagine if whenever I have to edit something, I have to keep doing transfer between the laptop HDD & external HDD.
    Any experts can advise?

I am using LR 5.2 and I do not have this problem. My Raw files are on an external hard drive and my catalog together with its previews and Smart Previews and the CR Cache folder are all on a USB 3.0, 64 GB memory stick. The only thing on the laptop's (Windows 7) internal drive is the LR application. I turn on the external only when importing or exporting/printing and editing is done through the Smart Previews. This setup works smooth as silk for me, so I think you also should be able to work from the external.
When you write "it does not allow me to create catalog nor retrieve catalog from external HDD," what do you mean? If you go to File/New Catalog, does the external not appear on the system navigation window that opens? If you go to File/Open Catalog, does the external not appear on the system navigation window that opens? If, with LR closed, you use Explorer or Finder to go to an .lrcat file on the external and double-click it, does this launch LR?

I am unable to copy a folder on mac to an external hdd or even to a usb

If the external drives are formatted for Windows (NTFS), you can't write to them natively on a Mac. Your options are (1) to back up and reformat the devices as FAT32 or ExFAT, or (2) to install third-party software that enables writing to an NTFS volume (not recommended.)

  • Mountain Lion 10.8.2 not showing big folders from External HDD, please help ?

    Hello guys,
The problem appeared after I did a clean install of Mountain Lion 10.8.2. The OS works nicely except it does not show my big Movie (around 200 GB) folder from my External HDD. This Movie folder is not related to any Apple software such as iTunes etc.. What's funny is that my LG TV shows the folder, and I can access it to open any movie. But when I mount the HDD to my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion now, all folders are shown except this one. The HDD is NTFS and had no problems with Snow Leopard (my previous OS).
I tried defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE and I see hidden folders in External HDD, but the Movie folder is still not shown.
Is this issue related to the size of this folder ? any help & ideas are greatly appreciated, thanks!

    Hi all,
I see its been 2 months since the last post. Did someone find the solution? I have the same problem with 10.8.2 update. Macbook pro mid 2010 with Crucial 256 m4 ssd (latest firmware 010G). Since yesterday my mac refuses to start.
    What I did so far:
    1. Impossible to start os x 10.8.2, stuck at spinning circle below the apple logo at startup. Disk check ok, permissions ok. Startup in "safe mode" stucks on spinning  wheel as well.
    2. Impossible to format the drive for a new clean install. What I find strange is that I cannot format the ssd with any utility. So far I tried with windows, linux and with disk utility on os x. I put the ssd in a usb casing and I am able to read it as an external drive, can copy some smaller files from it but cannot change anything on it (no permissions).
    3. Did a clean install on original hd of my mac. Data transfer (1 user)  from time machine or the ssd goes through 85-95% then stops. And now impossible to format the original drive with the 10.8.2 installed to downgrade to 10.7.
    4. Pram reset
Does anyone have any idea what to do now?
    Thanks!

  • Troubles booting eMac from external HDD over firewire

I have an MBP that had to be taken into the shop recently and will unfortunately be there for a week or more. Before I took it, however, I used SuperDuper to do a full backup to a partition on an external HDD (a WD "My Book Pro" 500GB drive with two partitions -- one for full backups and one for extra storage). For the time being, I have an eMac (PPC G4 700Mhz w/OS X 10.4.11) that I was hoping to use to boot from the FW drive.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to get it fly. I have the drive connected via FW and when I hold down option at boot it only shows the internal drive (I've also waited a few minutes and tried numerous refreshes -- no dice). When I look at Startup Disk in Systems Preferences it does show the FW drive as an available boot device. When I select it and reboot, however, I get a the system folder question mark icon for about two seconds and then the eMac boots from the internal.
I know the backup is fine because I was able to boot over FW from the MBP. The backed up data is system 10.4.11 as well.
    Any thoughts?

    Hey Dema,
Well the builds for Intel vs PPC Macs are very different. However this can be done as here:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2006061610374449
and they talk about the earlier method using two partitions. They figured a way to do it without the partitioning.

  • ITunes Music Folder will not play from external hardrive after setting the correct path

I've decided to try and create some more space for my music collection and decided to keep my entire iTunes library on a portable external hardrive. I researched how to do so online and was successful at first. I set the correct path from the advanced menu so that iTunes would recognize and save music to the folder on my HD. It worked fine last night, but today when I try and access it I get the, "could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" error message when I try and play a song anywhere in iTunes. I then tried to import the library from my external hardrive and then everything was duplicated. I some how reversed the duplication by using time machine and then redownloading iTunes, which is a riduculous story in itself, but thankfully, I am back at square one.
I have over 24,000 songs with a majority of them rated as well as playlists I do not want to lose. I don't understand why it will not play the songs. Can anyone help me?

If you are going to have the library on an ext HD the transfer the entire iTunes folder. This way you capture all the files - not just the music.
Launch iTunes with the 'option' key down and follow the dialog - tell iTunes to open the iTunes library file on the ext HD and things should be ok.

  • Lost pictures from external HDD

    Hello,
I created a new iPhoto Library on an external HDD. I had about 16 GB of photos there. I found the library blank (0 bytes) today. When I am trying to open the location from iPhoto nothing happens.
I have Maverick 10.9.2, iPhoto 9.5.1, the external HDD is ExFAT formatted.
I tried to use the Disc Utility to repair the disc, it appeared to be OK. I tried to rebuild iPhoto previews (cmd*alt at iPhoto start) and it did not help.
Could you give me any advice, please?
    Regards
    Frank

I have Maverick 10.9.2, iPhoto 9.5.1, the external HDD is ExFAT formatted.
ExFAT is your problem. iPhoto requires the iPhoto Library to be on a drive formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled).
See these documents:  iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives
and Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture(or iPhoto)
I created a new iPhoto Library on an external HDD. I had about 16 GB of photos there. I found the library blank (0 bytes) today. When I am trying to open the location from iPhoto nothing happens.
What probably has happened is, that you created the library on that drive, but iPhoto could not write to it and wrote the image files to a temporary storage.   Check, if iPhoto created a new library in your Pictures folder instead. Did you reboot your Mac, since you imported the photos? If not, wait, unti you have checked the Caches and temporary directories, before you restart your mac, because that will erase any temporary files.

  • New to Mac - Copy from External HDD is Hung

    Hi folks,
Newbie to Mac here. I am trying to manually copy files from an external HDD. I've been selecting folders to copy into a finder window. I have most of the files copied but the system has hung up on a particular folder. It quit copying about halfway through a 10GB folder full of photos. I selected the Stop Copying button and now the copy window is hung and I can't close it. Apparently I can't force quit Finder. Also, I can't restart the computer with the copy window hung up.
On a PC I would just hold down the power button to force a shut down and then re-start. Should I do the same with my Mac?
Also, any suggestions on what I should look for when trying to diagnose the cause of the copy being hung up? Any special characters that OS X doesn't like?
    Thanks in advance!
    Nick

OPTION-click and hold the Finder's Dock icon and select Relaunch, force quits the Finder. As for the file hang, most likely a corrupted file. Launch Disk Utility, select the ext HD, and repair the disk to ensure it isn't a hardware issue. If the hang continues, then you'll have to find out which file(s) are corrupt. You do that by selecting half, try to copy, and then try the other half, repeating until track down the culprit(s). There's no easy way.

  • Imovie 10.0.3 update events from external HDD

    All,
I need some help on updgrading to the new iMovie version. After waiting for some time I decided to use iMovie 10.0.3 instead of old iMovie 9.0.9 version on Mavericks since Apple fixed the sort by date feature.
I have one problem though. I have an external drive which is in NTFS format and I used that extensively with the old iMovie 9.0.9 to move my projects and events to free up space on my mac HDD.
When I started using iMovie 10.0.3 I did update projects and events and it updated all the events and projects on my MacBook's HDD and not external drive even though it was plugged in. One important thing was that when Mavericks first came out I let iMove do an auto update and I did not have the external HDD connected. I went back to old iMovie since I was dissapointed with the missing feature. To re-update events I deleted events from iMovie 10.0.3 library and deleted the updateToiMove10 file in the projects and even folder and let iMovie again search and update and build my library.
In OS X versions before mavericks I used the free NTFS-3G driver to access drive. In Mavericks I tried using the built in support and the driver too. But I don't think accessing the partition is a problem as I can create new libary in the external HDD just fine and iMovie 9.0.9 still sees it and works with it just fine.
Any idea on how I can get iMovie 10.0.3 to recognize there are old imovie events and projects on the external connected drive and upgrade them?  Does it have to something with NTFS? Has anybody got it work before even with the mac filesystem? The iMovie help says that it should happen automatically ....
    Thanks!

    Hello All,
Also no answer but am having the same problem.  All my catalogueing via folders is up in smoke and no external HDs (where I would normally directly store raw footage when importing) showing up on the iMovie interface.  It is a pain the arse to go back to the earlier version - why APPLE, pray tell, do you continue to lower expectations user-friendly functions. Shall try the option+open for a library but this too is extremely inconvenient if it works like iPhoto because you have to log out to log in to a new library whereas I just want to be able to see my multiple HDs directly from the iMovie menu and then the folders within folders I have layered in there - to make it easy to FIND STUFF. Wake up Apple, you are NOT meeting your customer's needs or desires.
Thanks to the posters who are helping the rest of us lost in the dark with possible solutions - free fix-its for Apple which they don't deserve.

  • Former itunes installation from external hdd syncing with new installation.

    Hello, i need some help!
My laptop has a severe mainbord damage, it's not economical to repair it.
so, i'm going to mount the 2,5" hdd in an external hdd case with usb.
in addition, i get a new iphone due to fluid damage.
so my itunes with the iphone backup is on the external hdd, to run the external hdd as a boot hdd is not possible.
how can i solve the problem to have my backup on my new iphone?
would be great to have any ideas!
    thanks in advance

The iTunes library is not stored with the application - it is stored separately and accessed by the iTunes application so I'm not sure how installing an iTunes update or removing and re-installing iTunes would delete your entire iTunes library where all this data is stored. And you don't maintain a backup of your important data including music and video purchased from the iTunes Music Store? This is important regardless the platform but more so when using Windows with all the virus, adware and spyware concerns.
iTunes includes a preference setting to not automatically sync an iPhone automatically when any iPhone is connected. Be sure to select this first which doesn't require your iPhone being connected.
When your iPhone is connected, do not manually sync. At the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - (the name of your iPhone).
This will transfer iTunes purchased content only from your iPhone to iTunes. Any music transferred to the iPhone from music CDs will not be transferred and the same for any movies transferred to the iPhone that were not purchased via iTunes.

How do I use boot camp to set it up on the external hard drive, when i start boot camp assistant, it does not give me the option to select the external HDD,
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

How do I use boot camp to set it up on the external hard drive, when i start boot camp assistant, it does not give me the option to select the external HDD
You basically can't. This is Microsoft's fault, not Apple's.
Format the external drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), move data such as the iTunes or iPhoto libraries to it, launch those applications with the Option key held down, point them there, and then delete them from the hard drive. If there are items in the /Library/Printers/ folder you don't use, those can be deleted, and Monolingual can be run to free up more space.

  • Apple tv running movies from external HDD

I have airport extreme base station (wireless N) and I am connecting my external HDD to the USB port to it and by doing so I can access it from my apple macbook pro. I am considering buying apple tv. I want to know if i can run my movies from the external HDD through the wireless connection or they have to be uploaded to the hard disk on the apple tv (only limited to 40 GB or 60 GB)
    Thx

You can either copy (sync) iTunes library material to the AppleTV hard drive or stream it (play it across the network on the fly).
For syncing (copying) or streaming (on the fly) it doesn't actually matter where on the network the media files lives BUT it must have been added to iTunes at some stage. By setting preferences appropriately you can have material for iTunes residing on different external or network drives, or all in the same library folder.
AppleTV uses iTunes to sync new content and also streamed content is sent VIA iTunes. The last point means that for streaming iTunes must be running, whereas it can be off for playing already synced content.
So, so long as iTunes is running it will be able to stream music or movies to AppleTV from the connected external drive.
In fact many of us use external drives to store all or most of our content.
So long as your network is up to the task streaming will playback as well as synced content, though navigatiuon within a file can be a tad slower.

  • Can't boot Arch from external HDD

Hi, well first off this is not my first Arch Linux installation, I'm using Arch for a little over a year now (coming from slack). But this is my first attempt to have Arch on an external HDD.
Alrighty, the situation is as follows: A rather new computer (supports booting from USB devices and the bios is set to boot from removable devices first) with a built in HDD and an external HDD that's connected to that computer via USB.
What I did: I connected the external HDD to the computer and booted off a 2008.6 Overlord core-CD.
Arch-Live recognized the internal HDD as sda and the external HDD as sdb.
I partitioned the external HDD using cfdisk and ran mkfs.ext3 on it (I didn't use any switches with that).
I started the installer, set my mount points (I should mention I'm not gonna use a swap partition here), installed the packages, well just went through the installation routine and installed grub in the MBR of sdb (the external HDD).
Then I rebooted. And this is what doesn't work: When I boot that computer with the external HDD connected the computer completely hangs right before grub would come up. It freezes completely, ctrl+alt+del doesn't work, I need to use the powerswitch to reboot the computer.
So I put the Arch-CD back in the CD drive trying to boot into my Arch System on the external HDD. So I started typing:
    root (hd1,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sdb1 ro vga=773
    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
When I try to boot off that grub tells me that there is no such device as hd1,0. The funny thing is, that the auto copmletion in grub works for the kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 but it doesn't for the device /dev/sdb1, in fact even root=/de<tab> returns a "unrecognized string" message.
So this is what I did and I can't boot off my external HDD, neither can I boot into my system on the external hdd from the cdrom.
    What am I missing here?

The harddrive you boot from is in my experience always hd0. Could this mean your external disc is hd2?
Have you tried chainloading from the installer cd to your external disc?

  • Time machine backup from external hdd to time capsule

Is it possible to transfer an time machine backup from an external hdd to a time capsule? I have changed the original 2tb time capsule hdd to a 3tb hdd because of loud sounds from the 2tb hdd. Now i want to transfer the backup from the (now external) 2tb hdd to the new 3tb hdd which is now in the time capsule. Could anybody help me?

Yes, it should be easy.. just copy the sparsebundle from the old 2TB plugged into your computer to the TC.
This will take a few hours maybe a lot more if the drive is near full.. use ethernet.. do not even dream of using wireless.. Do not plug the 2TB into the TC USB.. that is super slow.. plugged into your computer with a FW hard disk holder would be the ideal.. but USB is ok.
    http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
    Is it worth it??
Saving old backups.. or simply start again.. a clean fresh backup is much more efficient. Put the 2TB drive in a draw.. if you haven't needed any files on it in 6months from now.. wipe it.
