"Entire Message" criteria no longer working

I use Smart Mailboxes a lot, both permanent and temporary ones. All of a sudden, they don't find anything when I use the "entire message" criteria ... they will find messages with from, to, subject, etc. criteria, but if I say "Match any of the following conditions: Entire Message Contains Apple" it won't find anything, even tho' I have hundreds of messages with the word "Apple" in them. What has happened here?

OK. However strange it may seem, this is bad news because it means I cannot guarantee that you’ll be able to solve the problem (i.e. this is not a Spotlight issue that can be fixed by just rebuilding its database). What works is some cases (but not all) is re-creating Mail’s own index.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is stored.
3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
4. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Messages app no longer works; plists or chat.db are missing

The reason this happened is that well... I sent a really really really long message and it crashed my messages app. So I figured I would try to delete the chat.db file in /Library/Messages but... there was no file there. Then I checked for the plist files in /Library/Preferences/Apple and the plists for messages were all missing. This is the only way I am aware of to solve the problem but these files are clearly gone! I figured maybe they were hidden for some reason so I used a terminal command to show all hidden files, which seemed to work but the files in question were still missing. Am I missing something? Is there another way to fix messages without these files? Should I find replacements for them?
    NOTE:
I have also just tried looking in ~/Library/Containers/Data/Library/Messages/Archive but I don't even have a Containers folder in Library...

I think you are probably looking in your system library rather than the user library.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but if you aren't sure of the difference, I'm not sure you should be playing around in there without specific instruction.

  • Short messaging format no longer works after applying 10.2.0.2 patchset

Guys need your help if you've encountered this.
Applied 10.2.0.2 yesterday to one of our grid control systems. No errors or anything.
Try to send a test message with the format set to short and it errors:
Test failed with message: "String index out of range: -1"
Needless to say, notification rules etc fail to send the message as well.
Set it to long format and it works. I have the following set in emoms.properties to control the short format:
    em.notification.short_format_length=155
    em.notification.short_format=body
But these were set when it was 10.2.0.1 and did not affect it working. Unfortunately I can't just set to long format, as grid sends the message in html format and on a text we recieve all the html tags etc, which means the oncall dba can't even tell what target has been affected!!
I have raised an SR, but just wondered if anyone has already hit this.
    Bazzza

This is just a guess and not a solution (well it is if this is the case :)).
Is your command prompt set to "Quick Edit mode"? I mean have you highlighted some part of the command prompt window? Does your command prompt window title read "Select ...."?
If yes, then just hit enter and your script should continue. Let us know if this is not the case.

  • Messages do no longer work on MPB

Can no longer send/receive iMessages from my MBP using Os X Mavericks.
Status shows offline, but also no chance to switch to available or any other "online-mode".
Somebody else facing same issue or knows how to fix?
    Thanks
    Daniel

    Hi,
If you only have the iMessages and Bonjour account in the list in Messages > Preference > Accounts  AND the Bonjour one is not Enabled then you will see the status as Off Line.
The Off Line or On Line Status refers to any Buddy List account you have Enabled.
Everyone gets a Bonjour account as it used to communicate with other Macs on your LAN that are using iChat/Messages with the Bonjour Account active.
It could be that you have an AIM valid Screen Name account that is not logged in or a Jabber one (GoogleTalk and Facebook run Jabber servers).
The iMessages account if set up always logs in and is always Available once the app is started.
Effectively it does not have a Status  and certainly ot one you can change (other than using the Sign Out Button and removing the Apple ID)
However not being able to Send or Receive iMessages is an issue.
In Applications/Utilities open the Keychain Access app.
In the Keychain App Menu > First Aid use the Reset option.

  • Seacrh not working for "entire message", Help!

Worked once but not anymore on my new MacPro.
Search works for "To", "From" and "Subject" but not for "Entire Message".
Really annoying as I use email to conduct most of my business.
Does anyone have a solution please?
    Thanks!

    Hi Roland,
I'm not an expert here, but have had a similar issue. Here's what you can try:
If you have an IMAP mail account and you have changed the preference for keeping copies of messages for offline viewing (in the Advanced settings of the Mail Accounts preferences) from the default ("Keep all messages and their attachments"), then an Entire Message search will not return any results. Change the preference back to the default and search again.
You might need to synchronize the mailboxes on your computer with those on your mail server. To synchronize mailboxes for all mail accounts, choose Mailbox > Synchronize All Accounts. To synchronize mailboxes for a specific account, choose Mailbox > Synchronize and then select the account.
If an Entire Message search doesn't work after synchronizing a mailbox, you might need to rebuild the mailbox.
    Hope this helps!!
    Lora

  • Search function no longer works when Mail folder is encrypted

I posted a reply in another forum that has already been marked as answered...BUT I was not satisfied with the answer...Here is the link to that forum for some context:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6362207&#6362207
And here is basically what I posted there:
This problem is a result of my attempt to put my User/Library/Mail folder onto an encrypted disk image, so that my mail images would be encrypted without having to encrypt my WHOLE Account with FileVault (rendering Time Machine virtually useless). Like many, I had to create a symbolic link from the terminal rather than use the Alias...that wasn't a problem. I can send/receive/read/write email all while it stays safely encrypted on the Sparse disk image that I created (by the way THANKYOU for making creating the sparse BUNDLE image an option, this makes it useable for time machine so it doesn't back up the whole thing)...Mail appeared to work perfectly with my folder in the new location
HOWEVER...I quickly discovered that the search tool in the upper right hand corner of the Mail View no longer works...It will allow me to search the "from", "to" and "subject" lines like any old mail program would, BUT the "Entire Message" option returns on results. There must be something special about the Library folder in my Home folder, because I haven't restricted my spotlight settings. In fact with the disk mounted, I even re-indexed my WHOLE computer just to see what would happen. Spotlight is able to search for FILE names on my encrypted disk, but the search "Entire Message" still doesn't work...are there any solutions? I've spent a great deal of time searching the internet for a solution to no avail. I feel like this question requires a real mac genius, but there are other people throughout other forums posting the same question with no answer. I'm no genius, but I'm not afraid of using Terminal if I'm told the basic gist of what should be typed there. I would love to see his answered fully. Thanks!

Ahhh! The proverbial missing information. Thanks for clarifying. Apple always has plans to fix problems, but their timetable might not meet your expectations. I strongly suggest that you report this to Apple. Send Feedback and send bug reports and enhancement requests via its Bug Reporter system. To do the latter, join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report/enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure over submitting feedback is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.

Going back to your original post:
    5) Tried running Itunes in 'safe mode', running itunes as an administrator..nothing.
Was that iTunes' safe mode as opposed to Windows' safe mode? iTunes safe mode is invoked by holding down CTRL+SHIFT immediately after clicking the icon to launch iTunes and continuing to hold until this message pops up:
Click continue, then close iTunes and reopen. With luck iTunes now opens normally every time.

  • Mail no longer does Entire Message search

I am no longer able to get Mail to do an "Entire Message" search. When I type a word in the Search box, the 'Entire Message' button appears "grayed out", and the only options available with All Mailboxes are From, To, and Subject. I did a Rebuild, I checked the settings in Preferences for searching Trash, Junk, Encrypted Messages (not that those should matter), I'm using a POP server, etc This seems to have just started since the 10.5.7 update. (help! thanks <Edited by Host>)

    bbbbobbb,
Quit Mail, open System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy, and add your Macintosh HD to the list. Wait a couple of minutes, and then remove your Macintosh HD from the Privacy list. You should notice (after a short delay) that Spotlight is reindexing your HD. After Spotlight completes the index, open Mail and see if your search works.

After upgrading the new operating system on my Droid Razr M it seems some useful features no longer work such as when typing a message the text anticipates the next word and when trying to delete individual messages from a contact, you can no longer tap and hold to select multiple message you have to delete them individually or the entire thread. Is there a way to get these back?

Well, that's kind of embarrassing. And I honestly thought I paid attention to that... It works perfectly now, thank you so much!
As expected, cdm-git also works fine since DMs only work in the root mode as of now.
Just for the record, both type commands output "/usr/bin/startx" and pacman -Q gives "systemd 215-4".

  • TS3771 My iTunes U no longer works since the update, an error message pops up saying that "This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes." I followed the tutorial that suggests to change to from 64 to 32 bit and it didn't

iTunes U video files no longer work on my computer since i update to Mavericks. The following message appears on the screen "This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes." I followed a tutorial that suggested to go to Applications/iTunes/Get Info and change to 32 bit. Now my iTunes does not open at all, it says it requires 64 bit. I am a bit confused and disappointed. What should I do to get it fixed? Buy a new MacBook?

Marcello, I am having the same problem.  When following the advice of many in the community to start iTunes in 32-bit mode, I get the following error after I have done so:
I am running 10.9.2 on a mac mini.
I am hoping this will be fixed or at least a solid answer could be given that iTunes will no longer support certain types of media going foward.

  • Upon upgrading iPhoto, iPhoto Help no longer works.  It gives the error message:  "The selected topic is currently unavailable. To see all iPhoto Help, you must be connected to the Internet." Help!?

Upon upgrading iPhoto, iPhoto Help no longer works.  It gives the error message:  "The selected topic is currently unavailable. To see all iPhoto Help, you must be connected to the Internet."   I am obviously connected to the internet since you are reading this.
I tried upgrading permissions but it did not help!?  Can anyone tell me what is wrong?  Thanks

    Try
Reboot the computer, see if that fixes it.
    Then try:
Backup your files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk and simply reinstalling OS X
Log in and update to 10.6.8
c boot off the 10.6 disk again and use Disk Utility >Repair Disk
reboot and all should be fine, except some third party programs that install kext files, those will have to be reinstalled from fresh sources.

My computer which is a packard bell vista operating system, recently stopped working as the power supply overheated and blew up and it has recently been sent back to the Know How team at PC world and it seems to be since it came back I now cannot open iTunes.  I have also tried to search for iTunes in the search bar, I can see several files, but can't seem to open any of these either.  I think that quicktime isn't working, either.
I have over 4000 songs in iTunes that I had recorded from my collectiong of CD's am  going to loose all these now?  Can anyone help, with very easy instructions as I really don't know what I am doing??
    Thanks

I would copy over the entire thing if you have room.  With iTunes 10.4 though, you can download any previous iTunes purchases you have made in the past with your current iTunes account.  While in iTunes, look at the left hand side of your screen and select "Purchases" and look at the bottom right corner of the screen and select "Download Previous Purchases".  If you have an iPhone, iPod and/or iPad...you can do the same thing from each device.  Nice new feature...just remember that those ripped CDs need a back-up!!!  Enjoy...

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page).
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
Here's a screenshot showing the particular links on the page that you should be clicking:
After clicking one of the circled links, you should be taken to another page, and after a few seconds you should see a download dialog appear for the msicuu2.exe file. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like for me in Firefox:
Choose to Save the file. If the dialog box does not appear for you, click the link on the page that says "CLICK HERE IF IT DOES NOT". Here's a screenshot of the page with the relevant link circled:
When the dialog appears, choose to save the file.
    (2) Go to the Downloads area for your Web browser. Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Getting error message : the item Itunes.exe that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved so this shortcut will no longer work properly. I get this either using the start menu or the desktop shortcut. I tried going to programs /itunes and repair.

    Getting the error message:
the item Itunes.exe that this shortcut referes to has been moved or changed so this shortcut will no longer work properly.
I tried going into the control panel/programs /itunes and selected repair which didn't fix it. Any suggestions on restoring the broken shortcut without removing and re-installing the program?
Running windows 7 home premium SP1
    Thank you

I think it is some sort of permissions issue preventing the installer from updating the shortcuts. Is your account an administrator of the machine? If it is and you still have the problem then you may need to explicitly use the "Administrator" account for the install.
