Entourage Synching Tips (constantly duplicating)

For the life of me I cannot seem to get a seemless process of synching my Entourage calendar with my iCal-to-iPhone synch. At some point I will get duplicates of ALL of my All Day events. Obviously my frustration level is growing with this problem.
Here is how I have it set up.
Entourage is set up to "Replace the Synch Items with Entourage items." On the iPhone settings I have it set to "Synch Entourage Calendar" and to "delete anything older than 30 days.
Yet, for some reason today, after adding a new iCal personal calendar, suddenly my Entourage is once again littered with a ton of duplicate items.
Sigh. Very frustrating.
Does anyone have an iron-clad work method?

The same thing was happening to me. I started trouble shooting and following some recommendations from other users. Until.....All of my calendar items disappeared!!!! You can just imagine what I went through. Anyway, I always back-up and was able to recover almost everything. I noticed that the items are duplicate in iCal too. So, I erased the Entourage calendar from iCal in order to start fresh. I also selected "replace information on this iphone" the next time I synched and that seemed to eliminate the problem. I hope that this helps.

Note: two important issues to denote in the sentence above is the word "SET" instead of "REUSE" and the controlfiles must be recreated in RESETLOG mode because the database must be opened in RESETLOG mode.
If you use the word "REUSE" instead of "SET" the opening of the database is going to request recovery of the datafile of the tablespace system.
So, apply this to recreate the controlfiles:
- Start the service in windows for the database COPY2
- Get connection through SQL*Plus as system
- Shut down the database with shutdown abort
- Start the database up in nomount stage
- apply the sentence to recreate the controlfile.

Web Gallery constantly duplicating photos...

I've made a fully open web gallery and have had 1 person so far contribute photos to the gallery. This person has sent 1 e-mail to the web gallery mail and the photos were published imediately. Around 60 photos in total.So far so good.
This morning I checked the gallery and had 250 photos... cool more uploads I thought. Wrong. The photos are duplicating themselves every few minutes!! My photos are fine, but the person who sent the e-mail with photos, the photos keep duplicating and triplicating etc.
I'm constantly erasing photos from the web gallery in order to keep the numbers down!! Tis is extremely anoying! Anybody else seeing this going on?

I'm having the same problem too. I had about 4 pictures in the gallery to start with, then my Dad sent over about 30 via an email and that's when the duplication started. My aunt also sent some over, but hers are not duplicating. I am deleting the dups by going into my idisk/web/sites/gallery/and then the gallery number and just deleting the folders there. I have done that once and now I have 55 pictures in there now but the web page says I have 83, although there are several links that are not displaying any pictures (yet another issue). I'm not sure if directly deleting the files will stop the duplication or not. My dad said he got a strange error back from his email server but just deleted it and can't remember what it said. I can tell you that the dups are happening when he is using his computer just by the dates of the files. He's been on vacation for a week and dups were added the day before he left, and now started back up yesterday and today since he's been back but nothing the week he was gone.

Outlook-Entourage Synch

I use MS Outlook 2003 (on my Mac with VMware) to house my contacts. With MobileMe and an iPhone, will I be able to synch my calendar and contacts between all 3 (Entourage, iPhone and Outlook)?

That isn't possible.
Just use Entourage on your mac to connect direcly to your Exchange server. That's a lot simpler.

Aperture tip for duplicating smart albums structure?

I have folders setup for each year 1996...2012. In the last couple of years I've created smart albums w/i each folder: 01 Jan 2012; 02 Feb 2012; etc.
It's a simple smart album based on date. I want to copy these smart albums to each year. But I hate going in and renaming each album and resetting each date. And on SOME of my duplicated albums the source stays as the year I copied it from, altho this doesn't happen all the time, don't know why.
Anyone have an easier way to create this structure? Thanks!

I dont understand.
When i've done the import, and look at that pictures metadata, the date/time is corrected. It shows up as 15:42 20080811 (youre writting).
So if the metadata is correct, I really dont understand how the computers time and timezone has any effect on the smart albums ... could you explain ?
Unless what you are suggesting, is that the smart album date is applied to the computers time zone, and thus when searching for the files, it automatically does a conversion of the time of the picture to fit the computers timezone => thus my 15:42 20080811 set to Los Angeles time zone, is researched using a French timezone and thus found on 00:42 20080812 ?
Wow, if so, this would be a stretch !
And if this is the answer, I do not understand the "feature" to import using a different time zone, and not be able to search according to it ?

In respect to the workaround you describe. Its effectively what I did, I sorted using 3 criterias: exif day of the month = 11, month of the year = 08, year = 2008. And for some reason that works !
Would there be another workaround? Instead of using the TimeZone panel, import them untouched, and doing a batch Time change on the pictures once imported and leaving them at the same Paris timezone, but compensating for 9 hours, effectively, bringing them to 15:42 Paris time, instead of Los Angeles time ?
If my memory is correct when having played with this, the batch time modification, did not compensate the days: Effectively, clicking 9 times on the down arrow when showing 00:42 12th did not change the 12th into an 11th ...

Migrating From Entourage -- Advice / Tips / Traps / ...

I'm currently running Entourage for Mac 2004 and am thinking of switching to Mail / Address Book / Calendar.
How well integrated are the various programs? If I have contact info in Address Book does Mail access the email etc.? If another user on the same Mac switches too how easy is it to share / merge / ... addresses etc.?
I have a zillion messages (okay, 8,000) in maybe 20 folders, a few hundred contacts, a handful of mailing lists, and pretty basic calendar entries, ...
How complicated and time consuming will this move be and is it worth the effort?
Any advice?

The contacts process is almost as easy as Mail.
Go to the Applications folder and open the Applescripts folder.
Open the Example Scripts folder.
Open the Address Book Scripts folder.
Choose Import Addresses.scpt
Double click on the script file and click on Run.
Choose Entourage from the menu and import from the Application.
It will launch Entourage and import your contacts.
If Entourage exports label information then Address Book is capable of using that information.
I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say "Categories associated with each contact."
Address Book has an Add Field menu choice under the Card menu to customize the categories of information and Edit Template lets you create whatever fields you are likely to need.
If you need to create directories or groups of addresses the file menu has the options.
You can also create Smart Groups.
There is excellent help in the Help menu, as well, to explain these options.
You may need to experiment a little, in order to create the appropriate template for the contact data to be imported into.
There is also information in Help under Importing contacts into Address Book with other ideas around importing and field labels.
You can test by creating new user accounts in system preferences and importing into the Address Book in another user.
This lets you experiment with the import.
It will help you to fine tune a Template and what method to use for the import.
This process is definitely faster than manually entering that many entries.

Syncing contacts from iPhone back to iMac (Entourage)

Briefly, after both my Time Machine and hard drive failed, I lost all my data. My Entourage contacts re-main on my iPhone, and I want to sync them back to Entourage. I understand the process of "merging,"but I have run into a few obstacles: I am using the latest version of iTunes (7.6.2), by the way. First, under Preferences, I have no options available under "Syncing." Then, when I connect my iPhone, and select "Info," I have no options here, either. I do have a number of contacts in Entourage in my iMac, but, apparently, iTunes no longer recognizes the existence of this program, so I can go no-
where. (My Entourage Contacts have been duplicated in my Address Book, but that doesn't show up, either. Something must be terribly corrupted.) I'm both frustrated and perplexed, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance. pah

Something to check when syncing contacts from iphone back to computer, make sure to open address book and enter at least one contact.
Then when you connect the iphone, you should get a message asking if you want to merge the data.
Click merge and this should copy all contacts from the iphone back into address book.
the same goes with ical also.
Make sure there is at least one event in ical.
Now to move the data in address book and ical to entourage is set in the entourage preferences in the sync services section.

Sending pictures from iPhoto 8 using Entourage

I have a problem that I haven't been able to resolve as yet. I send my pictures via email using Entourage. When I choose the picture and Medium for example the size quoted was 122 kb but when it was actually sent it was only 88 kb. Every attachment I send is reduced considerable. I can't ascertain whether the problem is with iPhoto or with Entourage. It did the same in iPhoto 6. I have looked everywhere for a setting in both Entourage and iPhoto and have come across nothing. I am hoping someone on here can help. Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try exporting the photos to the desktop at the size you would like, you can set that in the File->Export->File Export window. Add those files into an Entourage email and send. That will tell you if it's iPhoto over compressing or Entourage.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Entourage/iCal sync...a reward for whoever helps me fix this!

This is a long one and a tough one but I am serious about the reward!
Up until 3 months ago, I was successfully synching my Entourage with iCal. (using the native feature of Entourage found under the Preferences Pane)
iCal was then synching through .mac to another computer's iCal.
(Using the .Mac synching feature)
In case you are curious, I do this so my assistant can add events to my calendar.
And then mysteriously one day...Entourage stopped synching with iCal. following some of the advice found on this forum, I deleted the Entourage Calendar within iCal (the one that Entourage creates automatically) in order to reset the process.
Since then, when I initiate the Entourage Synch (through Entourage Preferences), Entourage creates the Calendar within iCal and appears to be 'pushing' events to iCal. However, when the synch process is complete, no events appear in that Calendar.
Interestingly, iCal can still synchronize effectively between the other computer's iCal (of course this is useless because it is not sharing infor from Entourage which is my main calendar.)
To date I have tried the following fixes:
- Removed and re-installed iCal
- Removed and re-installed Entourage and the entire MacOffice suite
- Cleared out Synch services (as per one recommendation on this forum
- Completely re-formatted my computer and re-installed EVERYTHING from scratch (that was a pain!)
I have isolated the problem as living between Entourage and iCal on MY computer. One of the ways that I know this to be true is that I am able to manually import my Entourage calendar FROM iCAL (using the import function.)
Because I need to have mey calendar visible by my assistant, I basically delete the data from iCal, re-import Entourage, and re-publish the calendar every day...this is no fun.

1-way Sync: send iCal events to Entourage

I want to use Sync Services to send my iCal (v. 2.0.5) events to Entourage (2004 v. 11.3.6) and keep Entourage synched with iCal. The reason I'm doing this is because I much prefer how Entourage prints out a calendar; so I use iCal on-screen, but print out with Entourage. Therefor, I don't want Entourage to ever overwrite anything in iCal.
How do I do this?

Ical events duplicated a zillion times since security update. Isync hangs

I switched to Entourage for mail because there were too many bugs in imail. However i prefer using ical for my appointments etc. so I sync them all. When I first got my Sony Ericsson K800i, I had to purchase a 3rd party app in order to use it with iSync. It worked perfectly. Somewhere along the line isync included the K800i in its compatible devices. That is where all the trouble started . . .
Certain, seemingly random, appointments in my ical/entourage calenders would get duplicated hundreds of times. My phone couldn't synchronise because it said its calender was full. This was entirely because of the erroneously duplicated events. I experimented with a bunch of settings to no avail. Several security updates later, the problem seemed to be sorted. But after the last update it is worse than ever. When I open isync, it just says "refreshing contact groups and calendar information" forever. If I click on "sync" it just hangs. If I try and click on one of the culprit days on my calender (like january 25th which I know has a multitude of duplicated items), ical just hangs with the beachball of doom. So I can't even go in there and manually delete the duplicated items (which took me ages last time).
Help! I depend on having my appointments and stuff on my phone. Not being able to synchronise is driving me crazy!!

http://www.versiontracker.com or just google for "iCal duplicate events" you can find software to remove the duplicates.

My iPhone experience and some tips

After waiting for 4 hours at an AT&T store in Manhattan we were told we needed to order them and hopefully get them sometime next week for an extra $15. As I stood sulking that I wasted time in a long for a cell phone we were told that the Apple Store on 5th Ave. had a ton of phones in stock and it took only 10 minutes to get. Which as true.
My wife already has a PC and I have a mac. I canceled my Sprint service just so I could use the iPhone, but my wife already had cingular and we wanted to switch to the family plan, but the only way you could do this was to wait for about an hour and talk to a customer service rep.
Overall - the iPhone rocks. Totally worth the wait, however I had some syncing problems. If you have a mac, and have had some issues with Entourage this tip might help.
iTunes only syncs with Address Book, and iCal and I use Entourage exclusively. So I did some research and I went to http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/13226 and http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15013 and bought Sync_Entourage Address Book 2 and Sync Entourage iCal 2 and it syncs perfectly now. You can download the 14 day demo for free.
I am waiting for the updates to the iPhone software like ringtones, some sort of file manager, a better text editor, flash support, and the ability to download widgets, mms capability, and a capability to mass text my contacts, etc... but I'm sure it will all be out soon.
I will say the absolute best thing about the iPhone is the internet. Browsing the internet is incredibly intuitive, however I must admit that I wished that Apple would have worked with Sprint or Verizon. I was used to faster speeds before.
All in all a pretty **** good launch.

Thanks for the question. It sounds like you have an app that seems to be stuck on “Waiting," and the following is a past discussion that dealt with a similar issue and may help you as well:

Try tapping the App, so that it changes to Paused instead of Waiting, then tap it again to resume the install.
Make sure you don't have any paused downloads in other apps either, like the App Store or iTunes Store.
If that doesn't do it, try resetting or restoring the iPhone.

Duplicated Contacts - Office 365 Microsoft Exchange Server

I Have experienced problems where contacts are constantly duplicating over using Microsoft 365 to sync contacts without Icloud being turned on.
My Boss has a huge number of contacts roughly over 2000, when they are being duplicated, triplicated and so on it becomes a disaster at first i thought that th eproblem was within his contacts in 365 server but then i manually sorted all contacts wiped them all of his iphone 4s and runing the latest IOS 5.1.1 the problem still persisted when i would first choose to sync contacts from our 365 account it copies singles he comes after 3 days of using the phone with lots of contacts being copied more then once. I check the 365 and outlook there are no duplicates so it is only happening within the software of Apple same thing with his IPAD. I have tried everything there is all the low level checks and the rest of the settings to a point where we are tired and he has no time to chase me after this any longer. Please apple sort this out its a bugg i hope my message gives you a clear message on what needs sorting out i repeat this is only happeneing to him seeing that he has the most amount of contacts all the rest of us we do not have a problem.So far i have deactivated 365 and then re-activated to get rid of the duplicates many times, today i gave up i set icloud to be his backup but its not the same as on 365 as soon as a contact is added is also backed up to the server immadiatley and with Icloud is not the same only when wifi is on and the phone is being charged.

And it seems that Microsoft is dropping the current task sync solution in O365 in general!

HT202213 How do I use Home Sharing when my wife an I have had separate Apple ID's?

The instructions for Home Sharing say to set up the same Apple ID on each device. What if we have been using different Apple ID's and want to share our music versus constantly duplicating songs over and over.

Keep in mind we both have our own iPhones and iPads under our own accounts.

ICal - Week/Month View Changes

Hi there,
I recently moved my (small) company from a very ancient version of Now Up To Date (with server) to iCal with iCal server. Most of the people working here are pretty unsavvy tech wise and they don't like it one bit! The main issue seems to stem from the week view in iCal.
Basically, what the users here preferred from NUTD was a landscape week view with the event written line by line not blocked out. The problem wit the block style view iCal does by default is if there's more than one event at one time it is very tricky to see.
The month view is the style they want but there isn;t enough room per day. I can't seem to find anyway to make this view possible. Is there a way or an ical extension i can install?

Okay, I figured out a simple remedy that was probably always intended by Apple. I had been pasting long text paragraphs from emails into the 'Subject' Header. When I paste the long paragraph of information in the "NOTES" area at the bottom of the dialogue box and just put a brief subject line in the header area this fixes the problem.
This might seem like common sense, but Palm Desktop did not require this. I figured this out by trying Entourage. Entourage synching with the iPhone however works through iCal and deleted all my color coded Calendars that I had not backed up. In Palm Desktop I had 15 categories each with a color code.
Now, when I put an address into the "Location" window why can't I tap that on the iPhone Calendar and have the GPS/Googlemap display this location on a map?
