Entries in the .plist files.
I have two apps that share the same code base. I created multiple targets for them. So, for the two targets, I have two .plist files.
I am getting ready to set some of the entries that the apps need. I see that some of the entries for the Key are not available to one of them - in particular, UIPrerenderedIcon and RequiredDeviceCapabilities.
Is this normal? In my testing I see that the icon for one of these apps has the conventional Shine and the one for which I see the Key UIPrerenderedIcon, the Shine is absent.
Thanks in advance.
The names are different in the two .plist files:
* Icon already includes gloss effect [YES | NO]
* Required device capabilities [Array of capabilities]
and
* UIPrerendededIcon [YES | NO]
* UIRequiredDeviceCapabilities [Array of capabilities]
But then, at the end, things are working....

The dropdown list "Store Files" in the "Import Settings" section of Aperture 3.3.2 displays the history of the entries previously added to the list. Some of the entries are no longer valid and I'm trying to delete them but I can't find a way to do this. This is a screenshot. Does anyone know how to do this?
Once again - the Jive system ate my bullet points and messed up the formatting
Is the MacOS X version in your signature correct? Then you cannot be using Aperture 3.3.2?
You should not be seeing duplicate entries in the "Store Files" pop-up menu. This looks like your Aperture Preferences file is corrupted and needs fixing.
Quit Aperture (and log off and on again, if you are running MacOS X 10.7 or later)
Then reveal your User Library (from the Finder's main menu bar, the "Go" menu. Hold down the options-key until the library apears in the drop-down menu)
In the Library folder select the "Preferences folder and locate the file "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist"
Now you can either
remove the com.apple.Aperture.plist file to the Desktop, to force Aperture to create a new one, but you will have to set again your Preferences from the "Preferences" panel,
or make a backup copy of the file and edit it, if you are an experienced programmer and have Xcode installed. To fix the drop-down list you need to edit the item "RecentReferenceFolders" and delete the redundant folder names. Enter "recent" into the search field to find it quickly. If you click an item in the list, plus/minus buttons should appear. But only try this, if you know how to edit property lists, otherwise it will be much safer to delete the faulty list and to set your preferences again from the "Preferences" panel.

Blank entries in Safari plist files
I came across a weird problem today when I was using the Property List Editor to look at some Safari plist files - in ~/Library/Safari/LastSession.plist
The problem is that the value for some web sites is shown as blank, but yet there is a valid Safari window with a valid URL for where this entry should be. It does not happen very often but seems to be repeatable for certain websites. For example one of the problem URL's is
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=9191
and then look at the LastSession.plist file with the Property List Editor, the entry for this tab is blank, but yet gets restored OK the next time I start Safari.
So the question is how in the world do I see a blank value for the URL string but Safari gets the right info and opens the URL OK the next time it starts up?? This happens to more than this single web site (there are probably 4 or 5 out of 30 that seem to have this problem). The problem does not happen on another different Mac (both on Leopard) for this same web site, so it isn't consistent and in fact if I bring up the same web site in another window it might look OK in Property List Editor - very random. I've looked at the plist file with two different plist editors and both show the same blank value for where the URL should be.
Any ideas as to what is going on?
Thanks...

Safari on my macbookair running Lion has been hijacked by quizstope - followed the advice to clear the cache externally - did not eliminate it - erased the .plist file in the Preferences folder of the Library - again no help in getting rid of quizstope. Any advice?

Force quitting Safari helped there.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click Force Quit.
You can also force quit apps using Activity Monitor located in /Applications/Utilities
And make sure your have: Block Pop-Up Windows selected from the Safari menu bar. Safari > Block Pop-Up Windows -
Where is the plist file for the Finder option "Always Show Extensions"?
Where is the plist file for the Finder option "Always Show Extensions"?
I am designing a new master NetRestore image for Leopard. I have all my Dock and FInder prefs tweaked and customized on the image. (They all live in /System?Library/User Template/English.lproj/Library/Preferences...)
The one preference I cant get to stick is the option to "Always SHow Extensions" It appears to not be located in the usual com.apple.finder
Can you tell me where this preference lives?user/library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
Hold down the Option key when selecting "Go" in the Finder's menu to see your Library folder. -
Please help... it seems all is lost as all I kind find on this subject seem to lead to nowhere. My engagement was on imovie, a school project, several videos of our son. You will have to hold my hand through this process... as I am not very good at this type of thing. I believe I have deleted all the necessary plist files and moved my projects and events to a folder on my desktop. imovie has been upgraded to version 9.0.9... Whenever I open it I just get the beachball and then I have to force quit and I get the following report:

Hi
Yes this can be many things - and I can only guess/suggest.
A. a very common origin to make the Mac un-happy is to - PANIC-HALT - when the round multicolored thing appear.
So much can go wrong by doing this - and if done often problem builds up that can result in a real disaster.
B. NEVER - move or alter any folder named - iMovie Event's resp. iMovie Project's - as iMovie has no search function - moving them results in that iMovie get's 100% lost.
One can move them - but this HAS TO BE done within the iMovie application (as it is up and running)
C. preference files - there are TWO or more Libraries on Your Mac. First and easy to find is the one You see when opening Your Start-Up Hard Disk window = Root Library == the WRONG ONE
What we need to find is the one in Your User-Account folder (icon as a house) - and this is in Mac OS X.7, X.8 and X.9 HIDDEN. To see it do:
( It can be done like this: Open Terminal, then enter:
chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. )
or - do like this.
On the Finder window at the top left of the screen,
Hold down the Option key and clicked on Go.
This allowed You to see the Library folder and select it.
Then keep the Option button pressed down in order to see and select the Library folder.
Once found it, You are able to navigate to the iMovie preferences file and move it to the trash. iMovie then start’s up fine!
Now here in Your User Library - find Preferences and trash
com.apple.iMovie.plist
com.apple.iMovie3.plist
com.apple.iMovie7.plist
com.apple.iMovie8.plist
com.apple.iMovie9.plist
com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
and find
com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
Now restart iMovie.
I Prefere another way to find out if this is the problem.
(after all folders (iMovie Event/Projects are moved into original place)
• go up to Apple Menu
• Down to System Pref's
• Select Accounts - Create a new User
• Go down the Apple menu - Log OUT
• Log into as the new User
Now try iMovie
Does it work at all ? (Yes You don't see Events or Projects in Your original Account just now)
If so - Then we know that there is a corrupted pref file to be trashed.
Else - the problem are much more severe.
D. After Panic Halt / Forced Quit - I always do -. to keep disasters on arms length.
• Repair Permissions (Apple Disk Util tool)
• Start from other HD or DVD - then run Repair Hard Disk (Apple Disk Util tool)

I recently got some great help here from Rachel. She told me about the .plist bookmark file and where to find it.
Well I found it - I just wanted to make certain (since I have a ton of bookmark folders), that this is the file that contains all those bookmark folders and bookmarks that I created.

Obviously I'll need this file to put back into a fresh install of Tiger on a new Hard Drive.

Multiple entries in the DAD file but one physical server
Can someone confirm (point me in the right direction for documentation) that we can have multiple DADs on the same physical server. A typical situation is where there are separate LIVE and TEST database installations of APEX but the one apache server. So, how do I get the TEST and LIVE to have different DAD configurations, in particular the location of the images file ie the alais '/i/'.
Our situation is a great deal more complex than my example above, as we could have in excess of 6 different APEX installations on the same physical server with each having to have a different location for the image files etc.
Thanks in advanceHello,
Each dads.conf file can include several, unique, <Location> directives, according to your needs.
As the aliases are being defined outside a specific directive, it seems that you'll need to use different alias to each APEX instance.
You can read more about configuring the DAD in here - http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B31017_01/web.1013/b28948/confmods.htm#sthref544
Hope it helps,

Where do I find the .plist file for finder in Lion?
When I open a new finder window, it doesn't have anything in it. If I change the preferences to another place, I get the contents. If I change them back to the desktop, I get nothing. Searching for something gets me items, but I would like my finder window to behave again. I just don't know where the preferences file is now, in Lion...
thanks so much
PWYou can permanently reveal the /Home/Library folder as follows:
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. Paste the following command line:
chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. -

Where is the iphoto plist file in Mountain Lion
I upgraded to ML and iPhoto 9.3.2 and imported a few GB of photos. After the import iPhoto started crashing. It seems like the first step is to delete the plist file but I can't find it in ML. Anyone know where it is?
Usually would be found in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. However, that particular Library folder is invisible. You can make it visible:
Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Paste the following line at the prompt:
chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN.
You should then be able to peak inside the preferences folder. -
What are the .plist files used for they seemed to appear after I installed iCloud CP 1.1. Does the cloud use those files to sync the favorites now, should I hide them or delete them to tidy up my favorites folders?
The .plist files shouldn't have showed up like they did, they are related to syncing the bookmarks across devices through the cloud.
Latest software does not have this bug. -
I apologize if this subject has been covered already. I am looking for help interpreting the .plist files. I am not a programmer - but trying to learn - so please be gentle with your answers:-)
I know those files are written in XML language, and although I understand some of the syntax, I am stumped. What book(s) would I need to get to learn about this?
Example:
<dict>
<key>prefs</key>
<data>
bWNwIAA4AAUSTWFpbiBBZG1pbmlzdHJhdG9yAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
How do I go about figuring out what this stuff actually means?
Please help direct me to where I might learn more.
And another question: why are there 2 hostconfig files in the /etc directory, one ending with a tilde (hostconfig~) has some different settings?
Thank you for the patience.
DoraProperty list (.plist) files can only store objects of type NSNumber, NSDictionary, NSArray, NSString, NSDate, and a "catch-all" NSData. (Note that while I've specified the Cocoa-classes for these items, their Core Foundation equivalents are also included). For objects that aren't numbers, strings, and dates, the property list APIs provide a generic "NSData" type which allows you to save virtually any type of preference, provided it knows how to write itself to an NSData/CFData stream of bytes.
So, the entry you specified is a key "prefs" whose value is an NSData/CFData object. (Data byte values are base-64 encoded between the data tags).
For more info, see XML Property Lists.
Hope this helps....
