Envelopes & Changing Graphic Styles

Hi All,
When I create an envelope warp with text then apply a "Graphic Style 1" that works fine. If I close the file and reopen the "Graphic Style 1" is correct. When I attempt to change to"Graphic Style 2" the text seems to make a double. If I remove the envelope I can toggle from graphic styles fine.
Any help is appreciated!! Thank you!!

Jennifer I am using CS 4 and if I apply a graphic style the text after I do an envelope distort with warp it applies fine if I then select a new graphic style for the text it is now the new graphic style.
<br />
<br />I think it should work this way in Illustrator CS2 and CS 3!
<br />
<br />I would try to trash the preferences or perhaps you could go step by step for us on how you are doing this!

  • Fill & Stroke applied when changing graphic style to none

Since you set new rectangles now default to having no stroke and no fill. I think it would be good to also do the same to setting the graphic style to none because it is still applying a white fill & black stroke.
Maybe its something you just didn't notice when making the update, so I thought I would let you know.
    Thanks,
    Sean

    Vicky,
You could make the arrowhead  into a Scatter/Pattern Brush, in the following way:
    1) Create the arrowhead,
    2) In the Brushes palette/panel flyout tick New Brush,
    3a1) Tick Scatter Brush,
3a2) Set the Spacing (as the total length of arrowhead and gap relative to the length of the arrowhead, 200% for gap = length).
    3b1) Tick Pattern Brush,
3b2) Set the Spacing (relative to the length of the arrowhead, 100% for gap = length).
Scatter Brush will give you undistorted arrowheads pointing with a slight inaccuracy.
Pattern Brush will give you bent arrowheads following the path accurately.

  • Graphic Style that adds stroke without changing fill?

I'd like to assign a graphic style that adds to the existing style. For example, I need to add the same stroke to various objects that  have different fills. Can I do that with a Graphic Style? I know I can group the object and add the style to the group, but this complicates the structure of the file. I would rather the stroke was just added to the object itself. I looked at "additive styles", but don't think they are what I'm looking for.
    Thanks,

Thanks, Jean-Claude. You just made my job much easier. I used to think I knew Illustrator, until I met some of the people on this forum.

  • Why Can't I make a New Graphic Style in Illustrator CC?

Why Can't I make a New Graphic Style in Illustrator CC?
Nothing works. I've tried several options to make a Graphic Style. Even tried to copy another and change it.
    Kindly Regards
    Christina Saugmann

    Hi
It was a simple fillcolor with opacity. It is as if it doesnt respond. I can clic the symbol for a new layer, but nothing happens. I've dragged the style from appearance-box, to symbol for new style - Nothing. I've dragged the box directly to Graphic Styles - again - nothing. I've tried with my CS4 that worked. But not in CC.

  • Can I make a "recolor artwork" into a graphic style?

    I may be over-thinking this:
Let's say I have a logo that is made with one spot color, plus a gradient of that spot color and white. I want to quickly change the logo from one spot color to another. I can't make the new colors into a Graphic Style, since the logo has multiple fills. I can't just click on another spot color in the Swatches panel, because it fills all the shapes with 100% of that color.
Is there a one-click solution for this? See example if my writing doesn't make sense

I would defer to Wade's knowledge of typos.
If your spot only shows up in your logo, you can replace the swatch with the new spot swatch.  Pick it as usual out of your library and then option drag the new swatch onto the old swatch. (you could also temporarily move to a new document to do it if you don't want to replace all instances of your old color, but at that point, live color seems more efficient...)

  • How can you edit a User defined Graphic Style Library?

Sometimes I need to make small changes to my User defined Graphic Style Libraries - Add or remove an item or update another etc... Is this possible?
    Thank you for your time
    ++Michael

I thought I was the only one!
I asked a similar question and got no reply. My problem is I want to move from one library to another. I even had a chat with Adobe tech support and got no answer.
I ended up deleting the assets and re-downloading into the new one.

  • Do not duplicate the graphic style when you copy and paste a feature

I rely heavily on the use of graphic styles.  However, when I copy and paste a feature that has a graphic style assigned to it, a duplicate of the graphic style is created.  I sometimes end up with a large number of these duplicate graphic styles that I have to trash.  This does not happen with the selection tool+alt shortcut for copying.  However, I can't use this shortcut when I want to paste in front or paste in back, which is the case at least half the time.

Only advice I can offer is Option Left cursor, then right cursor, to make an exact copy in same position.
This will give you a clone as the action does form the previosu poster, but unfortunately no oslution for when you want to target layers.
If anyone else has any input on this here is how to reproduc:
New document, create a graphic style (eg: fill yellow, stroke none) and save
    Close the document
    Open the document
copy and paste the element with the graphic style, and with every paste multiplies faster than a tribble on Star Trek
I played with changing the clipboard options, no luck. Exists on CS4 Mac, CS5 Mac & PC, might go back as far as graphic styles do.

  • Graphic style problem

Copying an element  which has a graphic style applied  now breaks apart the style into individual elements if the style is applyed to text, the text is outlined too. This never use to happen. Have tryed changing the  paste board settting  but this changes nothing.
Has anyone come across this and do you have a remedy

    Adobe CS6 16.2.1
Any style including the ones i have create myself  any font which has a graphic style applied   This is a new problem to me,  never experienced it before   This  has be a persitant problem for a month or two  i have just worked arround it   but have found it irritating enough to ask the question.
Working on a mac pro  in lion 10.7.5
the Problem occurs once the  element with a style  has been copied if i paste (in the same doc or a new document ) what ever the element is broken appart  retains its look  but is nolonger a grahic style.  I can drag copy or duplicate  an element  with no problem.
Hence the the experimenting with the paste board settings

  • Is it possible to set graphical style to multiple different images that are links?

I have many thumnail images that link to different pages and each thumbnail image is a different picture so it appears as though I will need to create 20+ styles because they are 20 different images?
Basicly I just want to set the roll over state to border color, down state to differnt color border, etc.
but each style tells the border to be applied to that particular image state. So is there a way to make a global style that can be applied to all of these thumbnails?
The only work around is putting a transparent PNG on top and applying the rollover, etc states then placing the clear PNG on top each of my thumbnails.
There must be a better way to do this in Muse because I can do it using real CSS. I hope this makes sense.
    Bonus question:
Each of my thumnails has an HTML text title below it. Is there a way to have both image and text change on rollover? I can only apply a style to each, not as a unit.
    thanks!
    Lou

For your first question, the answer is that you cant store each states in a single Graphic Style.
You need to create 4 styles (for example image_nav, image_nav_hover, image_nav_down, image_nav_active) and then apply it to each image.
I suggest you to use a menu widget to create this kind of navigation, so you can choose the "edit togheter" option that allows you to reflect the cahanges you made to a single menu item to each other.
For you second question, I suggest you again to use a navigation widget.
    1. Select you menu widget and click on the little blue circle on the top right corner.
    2. Select the "Show left icon" option to enable a icon for each menu item.
    3. Set Part positioning to vertical (centered or left aligned as you need) to put the text below the image.
    4. Style the image and the text as you like. You can use the 4 graphic styles I told you before to style the image.
    5. When you roll over or click a menu item, both image and text will change state.

  • Problem updating graphic styles specs, after scaling illustrator image

    Hello there,
I'm designing a map in Illy and have created graphic styles for the various route keys I use.
After recording the styles, I've enlarged the map, so the specs for all the styles has changed to a greater value (stroke width etc.)
I've tried to update the graphic styles by selecting the enlarged stroke and saving it as a new style.
But when I try to apply it, the style button still applies the original stroke width, from before I enlarged the image.
The graphic styles window won't forget the old styles!
How do I get round this? Thanks for your help.
    Kind regards,
    Gill

If you scale strokes which are based on graphic styles, the original parameters of the styles are not changed. What actually happens is a kind of internal transformation which is indicated at the bottom of the Appearance Palette as a scaling percentage.
To do what you want, just select one of the scaled strokes, release it from the style definition and then redefine the style based on that stroke.

  • Problem with Batch Processing an Action using a Graphic Style Library

    Hi,
I have ~100 files in which I need to change the fill and stroke of all the linework. I created Graphic Styles for all my new features. I then created an Action that sets a fill and stroke color, Select Same Fill and Stroke, then applies the new Graphic Style. This repeats for about 20 variations (ie; select all Fill=X, Stroke=Y, then apply Graphic Style A. Select all Fill=X2, Stroke=Y2 then apply Graphic Style B). It runs fine in my test file. The problem occurs when I try to run it in batch mode. I have my new Graphic Style Library set to Persistent, so that it is open for every file. But the action does not apply the new Graphic Styles. It's like it doesn't see/read the Graphic Style Library. I don't get any errors, the action completes. It just doesn't apply anything.
Does anybody know what I am doing wrong? Are you not able to use an action to apply a graphic style from an added Library?  Do I need to add the graphic styles to the Graphic Styles Panel and have the action reference the Panel, not the Library?
Any help or insight is appreciated.
    M

    Try this:
Copy an item that has the Graphic Style to the clipboard before starting the action. Then put a paste step followed by a delete step at the start of the action.
    Hope that helps.

  • 3-color "double" line...graphic styles?

I'd like to create a "double" line that uses 3 colors.  The third color would be the gutter space in between, either white, or clear.  The lines on the outside would have different colors, and/or different dotted or solid patterns.
    Example:
    Red 1pt
    White 1pt
    Green 1pt
How would I create a Graphic Style of this type?

    535678,
For a simple double line, you may use an Art Brush, for more complicated versions such as one full and one dashed, you may use a Pattern Brush.
    You may:
    1) Create a rectangle with a height corresponding to the first line thickness and an arbitrary length, or corresponding to one dash and one gap, and give it the first colour, no stroke;
    2) Move a copy straight down (or up) by the distance in between plus the first line thickness, and change the height if needed (setting the upper left Reference Point in the Transform palette/panel), and change the colour.
Now you can define it as an Art Brush, or if you want the second line dotted:
    3) For the line to be dashed, reduce its length to the dash.
Now you can define it as a Pattern Brush.

  • Several of each panels (Symbols, Graphic Styles, Swatches) as default?

I have created several groups of symbols, graphic styles and swatches that need to be loaded each time I start Illustrator. I thought I would be able to do this by resaving over the "New Document Profile" but, it only loads one group of symbols, one group of graphic styles...etc. Then, I have to go and load each additional one and move the panels into the menu bar (out of my way). Also, I have to change the symbols to list the name each time. Please tell me there is an easier way to do this!!
    Thanks!

Choose "Persistent" from the symbol panel's menu.

  • Need help with exporting graphic styles

    Hi all.
I'm designing a game for iPad and am using Illustrator CS3 to create the graphics. I created lots of card sized graphics and gave them all the 'RGB Parchment' graphic style which comes with Illustrator.
The document in the picture is (part of) an illustrator file that I created these cards in. If I take one out to another document to edit it and save it as a .png - it comes back different. As you can see in the picture, in the centre are two mock ups I made for a card. The left is an illustrator file 'placed' in the document and the right is the same file but exported as a .png and then placed in.
The .png keeps the transparencies but the shadow is completely different, it's a horrible brown as well as the shape being slightly different and the quality quite low.
I sent the whole mock up picture (which is much bigger) to my iPad and I can still see the lower quality in the right, .png card.
If I want to bring graphics into some software to build the app I can't bring in illustrator files so I cant to create them as .pngs but when they're so different / low quality I don't know what to do. I just want to be able to use that 'RGB Parchement' graphic style and not have it changed so much when I export it.
    Can anyone suggest anything? Thanks!

I really am baffled myself this was a drop shadow applied to a rectangel wit the parchment style applied to it on a brown background and the drop shadow was applied with the multiply as the mode.
And then exported from AI as a png?
Why is there an issue and exactly what that issue is I can't see can you explain it or show it better maybe other people have a better idea.
Here it is after being saved without a background but with a dropped shadow created with a multiply blend and then placed on a brown background color? ( iagve it a feather and blur just to see what it looked like.

  • Compound paths & graphic style problem (map related)

    Hi all,
Been banging my head against a wal with this all morning. I'm hoping one of you can help.
I need to replace portions of a map - it' slots and lots of shapes representing buildings. The original file has shapes made of compound paths (see illustration below). That's great, because the center needs to be knocked out (there are some items underneath that occasionally show through).  I thought I'd try to create a graphic style to replicate the look as closelty as possible, but I cannot get a fill to act as a knockout - so I have the basic shape and effect that I want, but with a colored center instead of a knocked-out one. This is a problem becuase I'll be changing dozens of shapes and I don't want to have to recreate the look on each shape manually.
Here's a pic to help clarify. The original is on the left, my attempted recreation is on the right. Help!

First, thansk so much for the help! I'm soooo close, but I keep doing something wrong. Let me run through my steps to see if you can spot where I'm falling down:
Draw my rotated box (I Object> Compound Path > Make converted it to a compound path becuase I assuemd I'd need that when applying a knockout. I may be wrong there).:
Fill with white, copy the fill and fill with brown:
Apply a Transform effect to the 2nd fill (I need the numbers to be absolute, not scale, becuase I need to apply thsi to a variety of shapes but achieve a uniform look):
I then go to the Opacity on that second layer and check Knockout:
But when I drop the Opacity down to 0% (with knockout checked) that entire fill layer just goes transparent:
And if I apply the Knowckout - Opacity settings to the main opacity at teh bottom, the whole thing goes blank:
Incidentally, here's the shape I'm trying to replicate (I know my attempt doesn't reproduce the connected lower left and upper right rounded corners):
And here's a small chunk of the map. I'll be changing dozens of these shapes and want to apply that consistent look to them without doing each one manually.
G'ah! It's driving me nuts! What am I doing wrong?
