Environment variables of Winnt winxp

I wanna set Environment variables of Winnt or winxp thro' Java

Actually, if you can get access to the registry, you can view/set the user's environment variables at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Environment
and the system environment variables at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\Evironment
Note that this is specific to Windows NT 4.0, there's no guarantee that they will be in the same location on other flavours of Windows. Note further that this will certainly work only on Windows machines... there is (AFAIK) no standard way to set environment variables for Linux, BSD or Solaris systems.
For the particularly brave (or stupid, or both :-), there is a beta(/alpha) registry interface for Java

    Any reply is help to me!! :-)

    Thx for your reply...
    I get it!!!
    Read environment variables from an application
    Start the JVM with the "-D" switch to pass properties to the application and read them with the System.getProperty() method. SET myvar=Hello world
    SET myothervar=nothing
    java -Dmyvar="%myvar%" -Dmyothervar="%myothervar%" myClass
    then in myClass String myvar = System.getProperty("myvar");
    String myothervar = System.getProperty("myothervar");
    This is useful when using a JAVA program as a CGI.
    (DOS bat file acting as a CGI) java -DREQUEST_METHOD="%REQUEST_METHOD%"
    -DQUERY_STRING="%QUERY_STRING%"
    javaCGI
    If you don't know in advance, the name of the variable to be passed to the JVM, then there is no 100% Java way to retrieve them.
    NOTE: JDK1.5 provides a way to achieve this, see this HowTo.
    One approach (not the easiest one), is to use a JNI call to fetch the variables, see this HowTo.
    A more low-tech way, is to launch the appropriate call to the operating system and capture the output. The following snippet puts all environment variables in a Properties class and display the value the TEMP variable. import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class ReadEnv {
    public static Properties getEnvVars() throws Throwable {
    Process p = null;
    Properties envVars = new Properties();
    Runtime r = Runtime.getRuntime();
    String OS = System.getProperty("os.name").toLowerCase();
    // System.out.println(OS);
    if (OS.indexOf("windows 9") > -1) {
    p = r.exec( "command.com /c set" );
    else if ( (OS.indexOf("nt") > -1)
    || (OS.indexOf("windows 2000") > -1 )
    || (OS.indexOf("windows xp") > -1) ) {
    // thanks to JuanFran for the xp fix!
    p = r.exec( "cmd.exe /c set" );
    else {
    // our last hope, we assume Unix (thanks to H. Ware for the fix)
    p = r.exec( "env" );
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader
    ( new InputStreamReader( p.getInputStream() ) );
    String line;
    while( (line = br.readLine()) != null ) {
    int idx = line.indexOf( '=' );
    String key = line.substring( 0, idx );
    String value = line.substring( idx+1 );
    envVars.setProperty( key, value );
    // System.out.println( key + " = " + value );
    return envVars;
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    try {
    Properties p = ReadEnv.getEnvVars();
    System.out.println("the current value of TEMP is : " +
    p.getProperty("TEMP"));
    catch (Throwable e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    Thanks to W.Rijnders for the W2K fix.
    An update from Van Ly :
    I found that, on Windows 2003 server, the property value for "os.name" is actually "windows 2003." So either that has to be added to the bunch of tests or just relax the comparison strings a bit: else if ( (OS.indexOf("nt") > -1)
    || (OS.indexOf("windows 2000") > -1 )
    || (OS.indexOf("windows 2003") > -1 ) // works but is quite specific to 2003
    || (OS.indexOf("windows xp") > -1) ) {
    else if ( (OS.indexOf("nt") > -1)
    || (OS.indexOf("windows 20") > -1 ) // probably is better since no other OS would return "windows" anyway
    || (OS.indexOf("windows xp") > -1) ) {
    I started with "windows 200" but thought "what the hell" and made it "windows 20" to lengthen its longivity. You could push it further and use "windows 2," I suppose. The only thing to watch out for is to not overlap with "windows 9."
    On Windows, pre-JDK 1.2 JVM has trouble reading the Output stream directly from the SET command, it never returns. Here 2 ways to bypass this behaviour.
    First, instead of calling directly the SET command, we use a BAT file, after the SET command we print a known string. Then, in Java, when we read this known string, we exit from loop. [env.bat]
    @set
    @echo **end
    [java]
    if (OS.indexOf("windows") > -1) {
    p = r.exec( "env.bat" );
    while( (line = br.readLine()) != null ) {
    if (line.indexOf("**end")>-1) break;
    int idx = line.indexOf( '=' );
    String key = line.substring( 0, idx );
    String value = line.substring( idx+1 );
    hash.put( key, value );
    System.out.println( key + " = " + value );
    The other solution is to send the result of the SET command to file and then read the file from Java. ...
    if (OS.indexOf("windows 9") > -1) {
    p = r.exec( "command.com /c set > envvar.txt" );
    else if ( (OS.indexOf("nt") > -1)
    || (OS.indexOf("windows 2000") > -1
    || (OS.indexOf("windows xp") > -1) ) {
    // thanks to JuanFran for the xp fix!
    p = r.exec( "cmd.exe /c set > envvar.txt" );
    // then read back the file
    Properties p = new Properties();
    p.load(new FileInputStream("envvar.txt"));
    Thanks to JP Daviau
    // UNIX
    public Properties getEnvironment() throws java.io.IOException {
    Properties env = new Properties();
    env.load(Runtime.getRuntime().exec("env").getInputStream());
    return env;
    Properties env = getEnvironment();
    String myEnvVar = env.get("MYENV_VAR");
    To read only one variable : // NT version , adaptation for other OS is left as an exercise...
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd.exe /c echo %MYVAR%");
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader
    ( new InputStreamReader( p.getInputStream() ) );
    String myvar = br.readLine();
    System.out.println(myvar);
    Java's System properties contains some useful informations about the environment, for example, the TEMP and PATH environment variables (on Windows). public class ShowSome {
    public static void main(String args[]){
    System.out.println("TEMP : " + System.getProperty("java.io.tmpdir"));
    System.out.println("PATH : " + System.getProperty("java.library.path"));
    System.out.println("CLASSPATH : " + System.getProperty("java.class.path"));
    System.out.println("SYSTEM DIR : " +
    System.getProperty("user.home")); // ex. c:\windows on Win9x system
    System.out.println("CURRENT DIR: " + System.getProperty("user.dir"));
    Here some tips from H. Ware about the PATH on different OS.
    PATH is not quite the same as library path. In unixes, they are completely different---the libraries typically have their own directories. System.out.println("the current value of PATH is: {" +
    p.getProperty("PATH")+"}");
    System.out.println("LIBPATH: {" +
    System.getProperty("java.library.path")+"}");
    gives the current value of PATH is:
    {/home/hware/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/xpg4/bin:/opt/SUNWspro/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:
    /usr/ucb:/bin:/usr/bin:/home/hware/linux-bin:/usr/openwin/bin/:/usr/games/:

  • Demantra DP 7.1.1/11.5.10 with OAS 10.1.3 environment variable settings

    I was wondering of anyone out there is using Demantra Demand Planning with Oracle Applications Server 10.1.3 on 11.5.10.2 that is not on a Windows Platform, and what the environment variables set in opmn.xml are referring to; 9i/10g client on the Windows client host or 9i/10g client on the linux middle tier server.

    (a) Set environment variables
    In some cases, Oracle Application Server environment variables do not correspond to the default system environment variables. You must explicitly set some variables in the Oracle Application Server process in order for Oracle Demantra workflows to operate properly.
    Open Oracle Application Server file opmn\conf\opmn.xml. Go to the section <ias-component id="OC4J"> and add a section <environment> within it, for example:
    <ias-component id="OC4J">
    <environment>
    <variable id="<variablename>" value="<path>"/>
    </environment>
    <process-type id="home" ...
    <variablename>'s are PATH, ORACLE_HOME, and ORA_NLS33. Add one <variable> line for each.
    <path> is the system path plus the Oracle database client path.
    Contact Oracle Demantra support if you need further assistance.
    Here is an example <environment> section with the variables set.
    <environment>
    <variable id="PATH" value=
    "C:\OracleiAS\10.1.3\OracleAS_1\opmn\bin;C:\OracleiAS\10.1.3\OracleAS_1\opmn\l
    ib;C:\OracleiAS\10.1.3\OracleAS_1\bin;C:\oracle\ora92\bin;C:\WINNT;C:\WINNT\sy
    stem32"/>
    <variable id="ORACLE_HOME" value=
    "C:\oracle\ora92"/>
    <variable id="ORA_NLS33" value=
    "C:\Oracle\ora92\ocommon\nls\admin\data"/>
    </environment>
    <process-type id="home" ...
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    Boy, Am i glad that there is a demantra forum here.
    We are getting ready to install and implement demantra to replace our current ODP system. Our current EBS architecture consists of a source 11.5.10.2 ERP instance on ATG.RUP.5 (3 node on sun servers with solaris 10) and also a planning (ASCP, 1 node sun server with solaris 10 ) instance with the same patch levels on seperate servers (distributed architecture). The current ODP is on our planning instance and will be replaced by Demantra eventually.
    For demantra because of our load levels and also for performance reasons, we are thinking of the following configuration.
    1 Server for 10g DB on Linux RHAS 4 (8cpu, 8gb ram)
    2 apps servers on 10g IAS on Linux RHAS 4 (4cpu, 4gb ram)
    Citrix cluster - 3 windows 2003 servers for analytical engine
    users desktops - DM administrative tool ?
    I am not at all clear on the installation document. Can one of you please please help me out on how to go about this install. My plan is to first install the 10g database, then the 10g apps servers. After that I am not clear.
    Are there seperate CD's for demantra install or can i download the installation, do i start the install on the DB server ? how do i hook it up to the apps servers ?
    is there a seperate installation cd for the analytical engine ?
    How do i hook up all of this to our planning instance ?
    Are there any patches that need to be applied to our source ERP , planning instance for this ?
    Do all the source, ASCP instances also need to be upgraded to 10g ?
    If you have a complete installation document with the sequence of steps and can share with me, then that would really help.
    Thanks.

  • Win2k Environment Variables

    When I compile a .java that constructs an object of another class javac taunts me with "cannot resolve symbol". However, All the classes are in the same directory and the program runs as intended on UNIX.
    I imagine is has something to do with setting the "Classpath".
    Thanks for your help.

    You need to add the classpath, you do this in Win 2000 and WinXP like this:
    1)Right click on "My Computer"
    2)Click the "Advanced"-tab
    3)Click the "Environment Variables"- button
    4)You add your path to "USER Variables" not system variables.
    And make sure you type classpath with lower case

  • Environment Variables length in W2K

    Hello All,
    I am using Windows 2000 , sp2. while developing java applications If I try to put many jars in the classpath, I get an error message "The input line is too long."
    Is there any way to increase the capacity of the windows shell to allow more jars to be added to the classpath.
    Any help would be highly appriciated.
    regards,
    Abhishek.

    This may not fix your original problem, but it might help Scott and others with Win2K environment variable problems. M$ knowledge base article Q158141 explains how to allow more size for an environment variable. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q158141&.
    Basically it says edit the System environment variable ComSpec to add a parameter /e:nnnn, so if you change
    ComSpec C:\WINNT\system32\cmd.exe
    to
    ComSpec C:\WINNT\system32\cmd.exe /e:4096
    it will let you have environment variables up to 4096 characters. It's good up to 32768.

  • Environment variable

    HI Gentlemen,
    Could anybody tell me if it is possible to get the value of an environment variable in a PL/SQL module? For example, I deploy a set of form modules on x:\...\... and it can be different on every computer. Now I would like to code CALL_FORM() with symbolic drive and path names, so it could be quite general.
    Thank you very much,
    Miklos HERBOLY

    I was thinking about your case and to catch those variables with an OS command can be posible if you run
    a program that stored in a file the output of the command set in windows.

  • ProcessBuilder and Environment variables

    There is any way to use environment variables, like in dos, with %% through java programming?
    For example :
    ProcessBuilder pb = new ProcessBuilder("c:/winnt/notepad.exe", "%TTT%");
    // Would be even better :) ... But the previous line is Ok ;)
    // ProcessBuilder pb = new ProcessBuilder("c:/winnt/notepad.exe %TTT%");
    Map<String,String> env = pb.environment();
    env.put("TTT", "M:/temp/testTTT.txt");
    try{
    Process process = pb.start();
    catch(Exception e){
    e.printStackTrace();
    }

    Cool, it worked, Thanks sabre150 :)
    The strange thing is that with echo works, with dir no!!! :)
    //     String[] command = { "cmd.exe", "/C", "echo %TTT%", };
         String[] command = { "cmd.exe", "/C", "dir %TTT%", };
    final ProcessBuilder pb = new ProcessBuilder(command);
    Map<String,String> env = pb.environment();
    env.put("TTT", "M:/temp");
    try{

  • X11 environment variables on MacBook Pro

    Hi
    I have just got my new MacBook Pro and have installed Gimp to run using x11 that came on the apple installation disks however I can't seem to get the xterm to configure correctly.
    GIMP is installed under /sw/bin but the default PATH for x11 does not include this location so I added PATH=$PATH:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin to a newly created .bash_profile. But x11 did not seem to use this file although terminal worked OK.
    After doing a bit of research, I then created a .bashrc file with the PATH defined and changed the .bash_profile to source .bashrc with no other entries.
    Again this worked OK for Terminal but now when I type 'echo $Path' in an x11 xterm the PATH displays two entries for /sw/bin & /sw/sbin. i.e.
    $ echo $PATH
    /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin
    Any ideas why? and how can I correct it?
    Macbook Pro 17   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Sorry this was a bit brief; I think I was still asleep when I typed it.
    The reasons are these:
    1. Many fink programs require environment variables and other settings. When you source that init.sh file, it ensures everything is set up to work out of the box. (Among the things it does is to in turn source every relevant file in /sw/etc/profile.d -- take a look in it to see what, if anything, is in there). There is also some code to keep your path trimmed properly, so you don't get repeats pasted on.
    2. Bash is unique in that either .bashrc or .bash_profile, but not both, get sourced. In a rooted X11 environment, everything works properly, but on OS X, where X11 is "rootless," it leads to unexpected behavior like what you saw. As long as you put everything into one file and then tell the other one to source its contents, you should be ok.
    You can also run X11 stuff from Apple's terminal, provided you somewhere in a startup file have something to set the DISPLAY variable, usually to .0.
    I've put more discussion of these things here

  • How do I use Embed with an environment variable in an Actionscript AIR project Flash Builder 4.7

    I am using Flash Builder 4.7 to build an Actionscript AIR project.  The project embeds a number of png files from my local directory and I have been using absolute paths which all works fine.
    I have a laptop with which I want to start developing the same project - I set up a git repository that both the laptop and main pc can pull from and so I can get the source where I need it and push it back to the central repository.
    My problem is that the absolute paths for the embed commands don't work on the laptop as it has a different filesystem setup (Windows 8 with one drive as opposed to Windows 7 with a SSD and a data drive).  I thought the solution would be as easy as using an environment variable to specify the path which could then point to a different physical directory on both machines, i.e:
    [Embed(source = "DEVELOPER_RESOURCES/graphics/are/here.png"]
    I did a bit of research and there was quite a lot mentioned about setting up resource directories using path variables which I worked through but I just can't get it to compile.  The Actionscript compiler just won't find the png files however I specify the path.  I tried something with a FLEX project and the compiler didn't complain but I think this is because the compiler for FLEX uses a different convention.
    [Embed(source ="/Project Name/DEVELOPER_RESOURCES/graphics/are/here.png"]  works with FLEX but not Actionscript.
    So does anyone have a recipe for using the Embed command referencing assets using an environment variable that works across multiple machines with different file structures?

    I managed to find a solution on Windows which was to use symlinks and absolute paths.  You an basically point one directory to another so I did something like:
    mklink c:\developer_resources c:/the/local/path/to/my/resources
    and then reference all resources as c:\developer_resources\...
    Now as long as a developer machine has the right link (from c:\developer_resources to the place where the resources are kept) then it seems to work.
    This doesn't however work for Mac and certainly isn't a solution for passing files between Mac and windows

  • Open module for managing property file and environment variables

    Looking for an open module for managing property files and environment variables (like CLASSPATH) set in a shell script. For handeling properties (preserving comments, supporting includes, appending new entries, and more) I have looked at SuperProperties from openadaptor but find certain functionality lacking. As for interfacing with common shell scripts/files containing setting for CLASSPATH, JAVA_HOME, other system/application variables another type of object editor is needed. Maybe JFIG?
    Any ideas are greatly welcomed.

    You seem wright, you hit a brick wall here with Air to find the location
    of the command console on windows...
    So in fact I never build an exe tool, but this little problem was a nice
    case to test it and I tried it.:
    I downloaded monodevelop
    -GTK# for .NET 2.12.10*
    -MonoDevelop 2.4.2*
       from http://monodevelop.com/Download
    created a console project and had an exe in 5 minutes !
    You can download the findconsole tool and the projectfiles here:
       http://greencollective.nl/temp/dump/findconsole_monoproject.zip
    findconsole.exe will reveal the path/location of cmd.exe on a windows system.

  • Environment variable setting not working in the report

    Hi everybody,
    Iam facing a problem related to reports10g ids. database is 9i
    My basic requirement is ,i want to show a report out put in a BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE Language.
    For this purpose i configured the report_server.conf file like
    <environment id="PS">
    <envVariable name="NLS_LANG" value="BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE_BRAZIL.WE8MSWIN1252"/>
    </environment>
    After that i added a entry along with the web.show_documents(using for calling the report)envid=PS
    when iam running the report ,report server is only converting one date field in to portuguese ,rest of them are same as in the database.
    Actualy i dont know where i did wrong.if anybody know please help meee
    Thanks in advance
    mathew

    Hello Matthew,
    See Note:231051.1, Dynamic Environment Switching In Reports 9i for an example of setting your environment variables at runtime. It uses REPORTS_PATH, there is also an entry for NLS_LANG in the reports.sh file (in UNIX). This setting is causing the conflict when you try to set it at runtime.
    I think you have to remove the entry from reports.sh config file and then you will have to pass the parm at runtime everytime.
    I hope this helps!

  • Environment variables from ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist not read?

    Hello,
    I repost this from "Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard > Account and Login" since it was advised to me overthere. Sorry if your already read this one before.
    I have a problem defining environment variables that should be visible to all my user processes, not only Terminal. According to the Apple documentation, I need to create a file ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist and define my variables in there.
    Below you can see the exact paths and file name, together with the contents of the plist file:
    <pre>
    /Users/ringods/.MacOSX
    AtrisoBook:.MacOSX ringods$ ls -l
    total 8
    -rw-r--r--@ 1 ringods staff 313 Sep 29 15:35 environment.plist
    AtrisoBook:.MacOSX ringods$ cat environment.plist
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>ANT_HOME</key>
    <string>/opt/local/share/java/apache-ant</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    </pre>
    I then tried a logout/login sequence, but no ANT_HOME environment variable was defined. Even after completely rebooting, the environment variable was still not defined. I checked in a Terminal window using any of the following 3 commands:
    <pre>
    env
    export
    set
    </pre>
    This is on a MacBook Pro running 10.5.5. Am I missing something here? Does anyone know how to resolve this?
    Ringo

    I'm currently experiencing the same issue.
    I find however, if I take out the underscore from the name it works. At least the times I've tried.
    There is a post about using launchd.conf for configuring environment variables, but I couldn't get that to work either.
