Envy 17 SSD compatibility

I'm trying to install/upgrade a 60gb Corsair SSD.  When I put in the available secondary hdd slot it shows up fine in windows and I'm able format and mirror image the drive. But when I take out the original 1tb HDD and put the SSD in the primary slot the machine won't boot. I even try to run the recovery dvd's to put a fresh install and it doesn't recognize the SSD.  Is there a list of compatible drives and/or more options in the BIOS? I'm very frustrated with how limited the BIOS is.
Also where's the RAM in case I want to upgrade that as well?

  • Macbook Pro 5,1 SSD Compatibility

    Greetings,
I just have a couple questions regarding SSD compatibility with a MBP 5,1.
I was thinking of buying a OCZ 120 GB Vertex 2 Series SATA II 2.5in SSD, and I was wondering if there are any compatibility issues I should be worried about with the MBP 5,1 (late 2008).
Is the instillation of HDs any trickier on the 5,1 than the more recent MBP's? Also if I took it into an apple store to get installed how much would it cost? Any ideas?

    Hi Chris,
I am not aware of any compatibility issues between that SSD and your machine. I've purchased a couple of their SSD drives and the install was quick and easy. Although I haven't installed one of their drives into the MBP 5,1 (Late 2008), I have installed SSDs and normal SATA drives into the same body style and there's been significant reworking between the models that I've come across. Just make sure you have the appropriate tool for the drive screws and you'll be all set.
Regarding the install, the Apple Store will not install 3rd party components into your machine. Nor do they sell HDs that they will install. Apple will only install the RAM you buy there or replace parts as a result of a service.

  • Envy 15t (I7-4710HQ + Intel HD Graphics 4600) SSD Compatibility?

    Hi All,
I'm looking at purchasing the Envy 15t  i7-4710HQ Quad Core Processor + Intel® HD Graphics 4600.
When I try to select the 256GB SSD for the hard-drive, I get an error telling me that the Graphics chipset is not compatible with SSD and vice versa. Either I need to select a regular hard drive or change the graphics chipset which unfortunately would require me to change to a dual core 4510U processor which I'd prefer not to do.
    http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-ENVY/G0T95AV?HP-ENVY-15t
I'm not too phased about buying the SSD from HP directly, I'm happy to add one in after the fact.
So, does anyone know if there is a definite incompatibility between the CPU / GPU and an SSD?
Additionally, is the 15t able to carry both an SSD and a regular hard drive?
I've seen the 15t-j000 being offered with both by default - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EWHJWLU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2TC87EJKQMY9O
Assuming the 15t above is able to run an SSD, does this mean I can buy the 15t above with a regular hard drive and add an SSD for my primary drive after I get it?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
The Envy 15t with Intel HD graphics card probably doesn't have a mSATA slot. That means if the 256GB SSD is a mSATA one you can't have it in your laptop. I think it's the setup for the laptop from amazon. There is a 240GB SSD plus a 1TB HDD which is most likely a 240GB mSATA SSD and a 2.5" 1TB hard drive because the laptop has nVidia vga and also it's a 15.6" model with only one hard drive bay. Laptops with nVidia graphics chips definitely have a mSATA slot.
Yes, you can get the laptop with a hard drive and then upgrade it to a proper 2.5" solid drive.

  • Envy 17-j051ei ssd compatibility list?

    Hi
Could you please post a list of compatible SSD's including which HP recommends.
    Kind regards

    Hi
HP has not tested any for your model except 24GB & 32GB mSATA cache SSD , which can only be put in system upto 8GB RAM & I assume yours has 16GB.
    Go through this manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03922401.pdf
But that does not mean you cannot replace it, there is no problem in upgrading in HDD to SSD.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c02435719&lc=en&product=5393750&tmp...
I like Samsung EVO SSD , and is planning for upgrade of my system.

  • Ssd compatability Pavilion dv6-3118sa

I have a Pavilion DV6-3118sa laptop and the hard drive has died without warning. I am trying to find out if I can take this oportunity to replace the failed drive with an SSD.
Does anyone know if the machine is compatable with SSD's . I'd like to replace with an SSD of the same size as the original HDD (500GB).
Any help would be much appreciated as there is no useful info in the HP support area of their site.
    This question was solved.

Thank you for your reply. I suspected as much but it would be good if there was something somewhere that listed compatible or non-compatable devices for SSD's.
I know it could be a lonk list, but I'd prefer if someone "in the know" sayts so, especially when the cost of an SSD is so much.
The drive is for my wifes machine so I wanted to get the biggest drive I could, within a price range, ao she doesn't worry about running out of space.
I'm in England and got a 480GB Crucial drive from Scan for £220. More than I wanted to pay but it's done now. I closed my eyes when I clicked the buy button.
    Thanks again for your reply.

  • HP Envy SSD and recovery nightmare

    Hello everyone,
I do a lot of higher level IT work at my job so when my brother got the "blue screen of death" on his HP Envy I offered to help, "No problem!"
All my attempts to recovery the operating system failed and after repeated attempts, and the discovery of a bad PC3L Ram card, I decided that his native mechanical HDD would be unreliable in the future.
As much as the HDD technology has improved over the years, I am still hold the belief that laptops used (and moved) daily are susceptible to shock damage. And, for the record, this is the FIRST time in over 20 years that I have seen a ram module fail - the absolute first time. In case  you didnt know the HP Envy in this case requires LOW VOLTAGE ram (the L in PC3L).
Since my brother carries his laptop everywhere I decided to upgrade him to a 500GB Samsung SSD. He purchased his laptop from Best Buy and it did not come with a recovery DVD.  So I decided to install a generic copy of W8 from another PC I had lying around and validate with his license code - nope! If you have an OEM version of W8 on your PC you MUST order the special recovery disks from HP since the Product ID must match the license code. This is a MUST! How do  you do that? Well, the ONLY way that the recovery disks are shown as a purchase option online is if you allow the HP support website to DETECT your HP laptop and the CHECK (using thier software) what updates are needed.  Then, and only then, will the recovery kit appear in the list of purchase options below the PC on their support website.  Entering the model number did not help. And, the ONLY way I was able to allow the HP support site to auto-check his laptop was to install an evalutation version of W8 (unactivated)
You can chat with HP Support and they will send you the kit, but my chat lasted 2 hours with repeated language and cultural misunderstandings. Rashish (name changed to protect the innocent) finally caught on and sent me a recovery kit. In his defense I imagine he had dual screens with 20 chat windows open, but  who knows!?
OK, so then I ordered the recovery "kit" and was on my way - not so fast. It turns out that the recovery disks will not work with an SSD if the SSD size is smaller than the original HDD. That's right - it will NOT work.  HP support's explanation? "It gets confused" OK, well heaven forbid I confuse the poor thing. So my next option was to restore his PC using his old mechanical HDD...
The first attempt failed, like the 3 attempts with the new SSD,  but I did get further than with the SSD. It turns out that the COA is no longer on the bottom of the PC. There is simply a MS sticker and the words, Windows 8!
I used RW Everything to grab his original OEM license code and product ID, but still have had no success. This is unbelievable  - I have NEVER had these issues restoring a PC.
Last resort? Buy a retail W8 license, but that does not seem fair!
    John

My log from the failure! I have searched this P2PP BurnBoot failure also and it is all over the HP forum  - do you think they could give us a heads up about this failure? This is crazy -

  • Macbook Pro late 2011 SSD compatibility

I installed a crucial m4 into my new macbook pro 13", and had a tonne of issues; spinning beach balls etc. After checking the problem online it became apparent that this problem was quite common and was due to the ssd being sata 3 and my laptop's connection being only sata 2. I tried every single fix that was recommended including the upgrading of the ssd firmware. This did not resolve the issue. I am now going to return the m4 and I am looking to buy another ssd. I assume that for 100% guaranteed compatibility i will have to go for a sata II SSD? If this is the case what is the fastest sata II SSD I can buy / what is the fastest ssd that is guaranteed compatible?
    thanks

  • T510/520 Drive Bay Adapter III and SSD compatibility

    Hi,
I would like to use a Drive Bay Adapter III with some SSD as second drive on my T510 and T520 (I would switch it between those two laptops, use it to transfer data and so on). Are there any compatibility issues out there? Should I avoid certain SSD controllers or is it perfectly the same if I go for Sandforce or Marvell or any other?
    Thank you.

    Hello flashheart:
The Drive Bay Adapter III or Ultrabay adaptor (#0A65623) would replace the optical drive, which you probably are already aware of. There should not be any compatibility issues with either of those controllers but I have read many instances in the forum that the Sandforce controller is probably the fastest.
Some more information on the adapter:

  • 180GB SSD Compatibility

    Hey guys,
Laptop: HP ENVY TOUCHSMART 15-j004sa - Windows 8 (upgraded to 8.1)
I was advised by HP support (chat online) that the mSATA port on my laptop could support an SSD larger than 24GB.
I therefore went and bought a 180GB Intel 525 SSD. I have run some diagnostics and I went to Intel for support because the write speeds are horrendous compared to what is advertised. They have referred me to ask HP support because "As you can see in the data sheet for your HP laptop, only 24-GB mSATA SSD will be supported on systems, which are not equipped with 12GB or 16GB system memory. And these conditions may apply for your system."
I read the documentation, and I think it is simply referring to what comes included with certain laptops. My laptop was the 16GB ram variant and so did not have an mSATA drive installed. Could somebody please confirm if the issue lies with HP or with Intel?
    Thanks,
    Dipun.

    Hi,
The original purpose of the mSATA interface is to get cache for a hard drive in the primary bay. Means make the laptop faster. However, the mSATA interface can also be used as a boot drive with an operating system such as the Intel 525 series. I haven't tested the speed on my own 120GB 525 drive but looks as fast as a Samsung Pro 840 2.5" drive in the laptop from my signature. I don't think that it's the laptop what causes a lower performance of the drive. Run Atto benchmark and have a look at Intel forums. Maybe a new firmware might solve this issue.

  • X 61 upgrade to SSD & compatibility with later x220 models?

    Dear all,
I am intending to upgrad my X61 with an SSD.
Unfortunately, I am not really familiar with the related technical issues, and would

I have seen that there are already some related forum entries, but they date back
quite some time - so there might have been some developments since.
Furthermore, if possible, I would like to use this SSD in about a year or so for the new
X220 (or it's successor model). Is there anyway that I can ensure compatiblity - I mean
    in terms of size?
Any help, hint, recommendation would be very much welcome.
    Many thanks in advance.
    best
    z

You can update. We have a number of third party SSD's (Crucial, Samsung, Transcend, Intel), with Yosemite installed. Without Trim, of course.
Disable Filevault, Backup, Backup Data and check applications for compatibility beforehand (http://roaringapps.com/)
Check that you have sufficient RAM - min 4GB, then update

  • H61M-P20 Corsair 40GB SSD compatibility

    Hi,
Just built a system based on H61M-P20 with 40GB F40 Corsair SSD as primary drive and another Hitachi 160GB as secondary drive, And it seems that every few boots the 40GB drive is not recognised by the bios.
I change Power Cable + sata cable + sata port and even a DIFFERENT Corsair F40 drive, But the problem returns....
Is there some incompatibility issue with that board and drive ?
I connected the drive to an older asus 775 board and it works fine.....
For the meanwhile I changed the F40 drive to OCZ agility 2 60GB and will see how it goes.....

Ok, now that some time has passed and I experimented with the updated corsair drive I can say that there is some compatibility problems with the H61-P20 AND the B75-E33 motherboards and the corsair drives.
It just does not boot every few boots, I Touch nothing and then on 2nd or 3rd attemts it boots again.
I replaced EVERYTHING (Even different corsair drives from the same model) after flashing latest motherboards bioses and it still behaves the same.
BTW changing the corsair 40 to the ocz 60 drive solved the specific problem I complained about in my 1st post. The client is working with the computer for about a month and a half without any problems.

  • SSD Compatibility

I would like to know if my laptop (Pavilion dv2108tx) is compatible with SSD because I'm using the stock Seagate 100 GB that ship with the laptop and it is dying.

Yes the SSD drives are just a SATA interface and will work in a SATA laptop such as yours.

  • PCIe SSD - compatibility?

I'm trying to figure out if any of the PCIe SSD's currently available are compatible with a first gen Mac Pro 1,1
Say just for example, PCIe SSD Mini Cards which are supposed to be for netbooks, and are much more affordable option than larger PCIe SSDs, if somewhat low in storage size. Now there may be other pitfalls with these SSD mini cards in particular (mlc versus slc ssd's) but that's why I'm posting my stupid question!
Just trying to think out of the SATAII connection 'box' for SSD AND do it more affordably...
    Thanks for constructive replies!

    Hi justmetoo,
I know that you said that you are "trying to think out of the SATAII connection 'box' for SSD", but why?
If you are thinking of installing only one or two SSDs, then this link includes instructions for the installation of 2.5" SSDs in older Mac Pros (2006-2008), using SATA cables:
    http://macperformanceguide.com/Mac-InstallingSSD.html
The read and write times of Mini PCI-Express SSDs (PATA or SATA) are pathetic compared to those of 2.5" SATA SSDs, particularly the latest generations of the latter, and the price difference is not that great when you compare them for the same capacity in each.
If you are not that concerned about read and write speeds, then the price differential is even less if you compare them to "value" ranges of 2.5" SATA II SSDs, such as the recently released OCZ Onyx range, which still outperforms Mini PCI-E SSDs.
I am sorry, but I cannot follow your logic. The reason most Mac Pro users upgrade to SSDs is to improve, or even to obtain maximum increase in, performance, and this is extremely noticeable when a fast 2.5" SATA II SSD is used as a system boot drive.
If this drive had been available when I upgraded last December, I would not have hesitated in buying one, albeit that I would have had to import it, because OWC do not have any distributors or resellers in the UK:

  • HP 7227sa SSD Compatibility

So I've decided to get a SSD for my HP DV6 7227sa.Although I'm not sure which one would be compatible... I heard something about having to have AHCI, and SATA III for using SSD's.
I'd like to make use of the whole SSD's features (as I know some people haven't had AHCI on their bios so didn't get the full features/speed).
Could someone help on this, and let me know which SSD's would be compatible.
(I'm also aware that my motherboard can only support 160GB of SSD goodness ).
    Thanks in advance,
    Nick.

try this website it helped me out on RAM and SSD upgrades. they do a scan on the computer to determine you maximum computer potential. http://www.crucial.com/index.aspx
additionally you could always get an external USB HDD. I know it takes time with HHD's but they are cheaper and better developed than SSD's. I have a USB 1 TB external HDD and i'm happy with it; again its all up to you. Hope this helped on some information with SSD's and HDD's :-)

  • Finding the RIGHT SSD (compatibility)

I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro with the Nvidia MCP79 AHCI SATA controller. I had an OCZ Vertex 2 which was awesome but failed so I tried to replace it with an ADATA but that will not negotiate at 3GB/s.
I was going to try checking the xbench database and specifying the machine type, but is there a authoritative way I can know that the SSD will negotiate correctly with the controller?
Yes I have the latest EFI. Thanks!

My OWC Mercury Electra 3G SSD from MacSales runs a 3 gigabits in my mid-2009 15" Macbook Pro. I have it in a Data Doubler enclosure replacing the internal optical drive. My hard disk is a Toshiba 1TB which also runs at 3 gigabits, but is very much slower than the SSD. I have the SSD drive configured as the boot drive.
