Envy J053ea SSD + mem upgrade

Hi,
I am about to bite the bullet on an SSD drive (Crucial CT240M500SSD1 2.5-inch 240GB M500) + memory upgrade.
Can anyone tell me if I would have any issues - if this is compatible?
+ compatible memory options would be handy.
Many thanks in advance.

Hi,
Yes, that solid drive should work but I would recommend a Samsung 840 Series Pro: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Series-256GB-Solid-State/dp/B009LI7CTY
These modules are great for a memory upgrade: http://www.ebuyer.com/370074-corsair-8gb-1600mhz-ddr3-vengeance-laptop-memory-cmsx8gx3m1a1600c10?utm...

  • Buy Parts for HP Envy j053ea to install secondary hard disk

I've bought an HP Envy j053ea with a 1TB drive.
I've replaced the 1TB drive with my own 256GB SSD drive but would like to use the existing 1TB drive as a secondary hard disk.
Where can I buy the parts to install a second harddisk (put the existing 1TB drive back into my laptop as a secondary drive if I've bought a SSD as my primary)?

    Hi' Ellis,
You need an appropriate sata cable and a hard drive caddy bay to set up your secondary hard drive in your HP laptop ENVY J053ea.
You can order this kit online from ebay. This kit is made by Microstorage and its number is 351.
After you have ordered and delievered one for yourself go to youtube and search for by "how to install a 2nd hdd in HP Envy 17 J053ea". You will come across a number of videos jus go through the right one and teach yourself how you going to install your hard drive in your machine. You probably need to order a screw driver aswell if you don't have one already.
I just ordered a kit for myself aswell for £48 from ebay and it is due to be arrive on Thursday 30th Janvary 2014.
    Hope this answers your question.
    Thanks

  • Envy 15 750GB HDD Upgrade

I attempted to upgrade my Envy 15 HDD with a WD 750GB HDD.  The Win7 installation starts fine, recognizes the HDD, allows partitioning/formatting, and proceed just fine.  However, the Win7 installation fails during configuration with a terse message that Windows 7 cannot be installed on this computer's hardware.  However, in other laptops (ACER , Toshiba), Win7 installs just fine on this HDD.  I have upgraded the firmware to the latest, and have tried several different combinations.  I also ran the HDD diagnostic in firmware (bios) confirming that the HDD is just fine.
Is there a problem installing a large HDD on this laptop--I noticed that 640GB is the largest HDD option?
(Seems unlikely, it installs on a ACER but not on an HP???)
    Any suggestions?

That is the one SSD model that has caused issues with HP laptops and I would stay clear. I would get this one:

This one is the best price I could find:

  • Mem upgrade on MS-6382

I have purchased 2x CT12864Z40B from crucial.com to upgrade my Microstar ms-6382 based
    system.
I can used either memory module (with or without the original 256mb
module), yet am unable to use both of the new modules together.
I have checked that my BOIS is the latest version, yet still cannot get
both modules to work at the same time.  The system simply will not get
to the BIOS screen with both of the new modules installed.
Crucial recommend adjusting the DDR voltages, yet I cannot see an option for this in the bios.
Please can you advise what is wrong and how to get both mem sticks working together?

    Hi
The voltage adjustment for the memory is listed as vdimm in the bios.  Set it to 2.6v or 2.7v.  2gig of memory uses quite a bit of power so your power supply may not quite be up to the job.
Some micro atx motherboards don't have this adjustment in the bios.

  • Can HP ENVY 23-d030 be upgraded to i7-3770s

Although according to the specifications, the HP ENVY 23-d003 can't be upgraded to a i7-3770s processor, the HP ENVY 23-d010a uses the same motherboard and is sold with the i7-3770s processor as standard. Since both use the same motherboard, the i7-3770s has the same TDP (65W) as the i5-3330s, and both were released during the same month/year, it would seem that an upgrade is possible.
    HP ENVY 23-d030 Specifications
    HP ENVY 23-d010a Specifications
The only major difference I see between the two is that the d010a comes with a 180W brick instead of 150W brick to support the NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M mini pci express mxm graphics card (33W) that comes standard with the d010a.
If the d030 can be upgraded, what would be even more tempting would be to upgrade to the i7-3770 at 77W with even more processing power (if the i7-3770s works, then the i7-3770 should also work if there is enough available power in the brick). I probably wouldn't spend $300 for the I7-3770s or i7-3770 since the system really isn't a gaming system even if it had the GT 630m graphics card so my interest is primarily curiosity.
    Any opinions?

  • Buy a MacBook pro with SSD or upgrade to SSD?

Hey guys! Hope you can help me out with this one!
I have just purchased a MacBook Pro 13" with i7 2.9 GHz processor, 8 GB ram and a 750 GB 5400 rpm HDD.
The simple reason that I bought it with a HDD and not a SSD is that I could not afford the SSD.
Now after searching the web I have come across a huge amount of videos and threads on various Apple forums talking about how easy it is to upgrade your MacBook Pro to have a SSD instead of a HDD. I have also researched the cost of such an upgrade and it seems incredibly cheap compared to buying a MBP with a SSD already installed.
How is this possible? To me it seems to good to be true that it is cheaper to upgrade your computer with a SSD than buying a computer with a SSD already installed?! Does such an upgrade come with a lot of downsides? Or is it really true that you can save yourself money by doing the upgrade yourself after purchasing the computer?
    Thanks a lot!

Because Apple gouges its customers on any upgraded from Standard, Stock, configurations.
No real downsides except that you mi=ust Enable TRIM support yourself once you install an afermarket SSD. If Apple installs one, Branded as an Apple SSD, then TRIM is Auto Enabled, Go figure.
The next, and only other, downside is you will lose some storage capacity as a SSD of 750GBs, or even close to 750GBs, will cost you lots of money. So most people install 256GB models which in your case would drop the total internal drive capacity by 500GBs+/-.

  • Portege R30 won't boot from SSD after upgrade to SSD and HDD under CSM mode

    Hi
I upgraded my Portege R30-ASMBN22 to SSD (Crucial M550) and replace the optical drive by the original HDD with caddy.
In order to install Windows 7, I change the BIOS to CSM mode. But now the system won't boot automatically from the SSD. It only boot from HDD which is in the ODD spot.
I could press F12 while turning on my laptop, and bring up the boot manual. Here I can see my SSD and I can boot from it correctly. However, if I don't press F12 when it starts. It will always try to boot from HDD.
In the boot order in the BIOS, I only see HDD/SSD, USB Memory, ODD .... It doesn't give me the option to choose between SSD and HDD. Is there any other way to change the boot order among HDD and SSD?
    Thanks,
    Louis

    Hi,
I did the same operation to my Portege R30-A-17C, and have the same problem, is there any way to boot without pushing F12 every time.
    Thanks,

  • Envy 17 SSD compatibility

I'm trying to install/upgrade a 60gb Corsair SSD.  When I put in the available secondary hdd slot it shows up fine in windows and I'm able format and mirror image the drive. But when I take out the original 1tb HDD and put the SSD in the primary slot the machine won't boot. I even try to run the recovery dvd's to put a fresh install and it doesn't recognize the SSD.  Is there a list of compatible drives and/or more options in the BIOS? I'm very frustrated with how limited the BIOS is.
Also where's the RAM in case I want to upgrade that as well?

  • Envy 17t-j000 GPU Upgrade

So I have a recently purchased HP Envy 17t-j000. I have the NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M. What I want to know is if I can upgrade this dedicated GPU through my own efforts. Otherwise, is it possible to give HP Support a call (or whomever I would call for this purpose) and return the laptop to replace my GPU with the very recently added option of the NVIDIA GT 750M. It would only be a $20 difference so I don't see there being a problem in doing so. Please advise.

It is a big deal because it would require a new motherboard. There is no other way to upgrade the GPU and if the GT 750M was just introduced I doubt it will be easy to get one of those motherboards for a while.

  • Portege R30 won't boot from SSD after upgrade to SSD and HDD

    Hi
I upgraded my Portege R30-A to add a second SSD (Crucial M550) replacing the optical drive with the new SSD with caddy.
But now the system won't boot automatically from the original SSD.
I could press F12 while turning on my laptop, and bring up the boot manual. Here I can see my original SSD and I can boot from it correctly.
In the boot order in the BIOS, I only see HDD/SSD, USB Memory, ODD .... It doesn't give me the option to choose between SSDs.
Anyway when I boot in this way I get blue screens after a while in win7.
I have tried to instal a HDD as the second disc instead os SSD and the resut is the same.
Is there anything I can do to solve this, now I have to use the second disc as an external USB disc.
    Thanks,

I have experienced the same problem. (I don't know why my previous reply got deleted.)
The problem all relates to the CSM mode of Toshiba BIOS.
The solution is adding a boot partition (FAT32) on the drive that is in the original ODD spot.
Use a Windows 8 Installer (on a USB drive) to build a boot sector on that partition and direct it to the SSD where Windows 7 is installed. Then after you have done all of this, switch back to UEFI mode.
The system should be able to boot Windows 7 properly from the SSD in UEFI mode.

  • Best way to clone SSD to upgrade

    Hi
I'm oretty tech savvy and i know several ways to do this but i'm looking forward to best way to do it. I have kensigton 240gb ssd in my computer and im upgrading to intel 240gb ssd. Lion onwards, you can't run disc utility and do restore to clone, we need to boot to restore partition or lion boot disc for this. Is that the best way to do it? I know doing this we lose the hidden restore partition whih i dont care but is there anyway doing it to keep the hidden partition or to make it truly perfect clone without affecting any programs.
One way to do is do clean install of 10.7.3 and use migration assitant the very first time computer boots and it will keep hidden partition also but i have always refrained from doing migration assistant since it doesnt copy few stuff from old hard drive. I have ableton and some other critical programs loaded on it curently.
I don't like the new interface of CCC and i havent used superduper lately, i believe they use apples restore command under the hood?
What would you geniuses would do if you want a perfect clone?

    Time machine restore?
I've used Carbon Copy Cloner as well in the past and it seemed to work just fine..
So I'd either do a Time Machine restore or use CCC..

  • K7nd2 delta - cpu & mem upgrade?

    hi all
thinking of upgrading my k7nd2 delta cpu & mem. right now i have a 2800+ cpu and corsair 1gig twin 2700-333 mem. the new memory i want to get is " Geil Ultra Series Value Dual Channel 184 Pin 2GB(2x 1GB) DDR PC-3200" and of course upgrade the cpu to 3200+.  i can afford 1 of the 2 right now, so would it be best to get the memory 1st, and will the new memory work with my 2800+ exist'g cpu??  or should i upgrade to the 3200+ cpu and keep the older slower memory??
    thanks for any help.
    rider

Never again would i use three memory sticks in an nforce2 motherboard.
i already managed to kill two by doing so.
    so that's a no-no.
and yeah geil make awesome ram, iv'e been using geil since my first ddr system and never been disappointed
if memory timings are an important thing to you [if you're a gamer and would kill for every 3dmark point] you should check their Golden Dragon Dual Channel Kit series, they're just awesome. the SPD for dual channel 400mhz is 2-3-2-6 if i'm not mistaken on them, but they can do 2-2-2-5 without problems.
or if you don't mind timings THAT much, check out the Value Dual Channel Kit series, SPD timings for dual channel 400mhz is 2.5-4-4-8, and these sticks are known to push 240+mhz on just about any overclock attempt.

  • MSI GP60 SSD/HDD Upgrade

I'm thinking of upgrading the hard drive to either a SSD or 1TB HDD. What kind of HDD/SSD is compatible with MSI GP60? Also I wouldn't mind if you could tell what kind of RAM that the laptop supports.
    Thanks

I guess all 2.5" HDDs are compatible, but regarding SSDs, you'll need to buy the SATA interface of SSDs. PCIe interface of SSDs can't be detected and won't work.

  • Ddr2 mem upgrade

I just upgraded the mem on my MSI P965 mb with E6400 from 1G to 2G of Kingston Valueram 667. I installed the mem in 1 orange slot and 1 green slot.
System powered up fine.....and sysinfo detects 2G no problem.
Is there any thing else I need to do? Bios settings, etc?
How can I test to see if it is actually running in dual channel mode?
    8^)
    Wade

Your modules should be placed in Slot1 and Slot3 or Slot2 and Slot4 for Dual CHannel operation (they need to be installed in slots of different color).
To check the current operation mode, use CPU-Z and click on the Memory-Tab. There should be a field that will tell you if your memory is operating in Dual or Single channel mode.
CPU-Z will also tell you the current memory timings and frequency.  There should be no need to adjust any further settings in BIOS.

  • Portege R600-102: which SSD for upgrade?

    Hello everybody.
I'd like to upgrade my SSD from the actual 128GB to a bigger one: which are the specs for the new SSD to work? Which interface does it need to have? Which physical dimensions?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    TIA,
    Flavio.

    Hi
I assume the SSD upgrade is the same like HDD upgrade.
The notebook support SATA controller You will need an SATA SSD drive.
The old SSD drive is 9.5mm height the new SSD drive should support the same height.
Since the SATA controller is not limited to any size, it should be possible to use SSD drives bigger than 128GB but there is still an question of BIOS support.
Unfortunately, its not known to me if the BIOS would support bigger SSD drives but usually this should be supported.
