ENVY m7-j020dx: Built-in camera is not working

Background:  I have HP Support Assistant running and do all the updates regularly. Chipset/BIOS updates I have made regularly as well so the machine is up to date. I did upgarde to Windows 8.1 as soon as I got my machine less than a year ago
Problem: Never used built-in webcam so I dont know if it ever worked, but trying to use it now and Cyberlink Youcam said there was no camera. Went to device manager and there is no built-in camera listed (it shows my external Logitech but not the built-in camera)
Would like to know how to get the built-in camera working.
Thanks!

Hi @ALMAdmin,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I saw your post regarding the problems with the webcam not working for you. Here is an HP document Webcam Troubleshooting with some troubleshooting steps to try. If that link doesn't work then it is most likely a hardware issue, I would recommend calling HP regarding a repair. You can reach HP Total Care at 1-800-474-6836 in North America or start here if you live outside of North America.
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post solved your issue.

Thank you,

my built in camera is not working after upgrading to a new Skype version

    See this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5306216?tstart=0
    FIX:
    1. You need Time Machine
    2. Go to folder /Library/CoreMediaIO/Plug-Ins/DAL/
    3. Copy AppleCamera.plugin to good place (usb memory stick is the best place).
    4. Go to Time machine in date that skype work fine.
    5. Change AppleCamera.plugin with file from Time Machine
    6. Restart system, Now skype need to work with camera.
    If that doesnt pass,
Suggest looking here, much success has been found:

  • Satellite M645-S4050: built in camera does not work correctly

My built in camera does not work correctly.
It does not have any kind of effect on and it captures pictures and videos as if some kind of thermal camera was on.
Also some videos I load up on youtube look like this.
I have been researching for an answer but can't find it, please help me.

All you can do is to test it with latest webcam driver.
Remove preinstalled camera software and install latest version offered on Toshiba download page.
If the same happen again visit nearest Toshiba service and show them how it looks like. Maybe the cam must be exchanged.
In the past I have used several Toshiba laptops with built in cam but I have never saw something lke this.

hi, my mac os x v10.6.8 's camera is not working. I've tried Ichat, Skype and Photobooth. Whenever i open them up, it say 'There is no connected camera'. Please help. Thanks

there is no camera listed there
Disconnect any USB device you might have connected to your MBP and restart. Check again in System Profiler if the camera is listed. If it's still not listed, try
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964>
If, even after that, the camera is still not listed, then it's likely that the camera is damaged and it has to be replaced. If the MBP is still under warranty, this should be free; if it's not, I've no idea how much it would be, but one thing is sure—it won't be cheap.

my built in camera is some times not working

From the article that the thread was started:
    Camera
Camera isn't functioning or has undesired image quality
If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.
If you do not see the Camera app on the Home screen, try searching for it in Spotlight. If the camera does not show up in the search, check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tappingSettings > General > Restrictions.
Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
Cases can interfere with the camera and the flash. Try gently cleaning the lens with a clean dry cloth or removing the case if you see image or color-quality issues with photos.
Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
Try to remain steady while focusing:
Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center.
Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. You can also tap to readjust focus while recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll.
Note: Video-recording features are not available on original iPhone or iPhone 3G.
If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.

  • HT2090 My isight/ built-in camera is not working

I went to the Apple troubleshooting sight and the issue is that it is not recognized under the USB section in the system profiler. The camera is not recognized on all applications and I already tried doing a software update, restarting it, and resetting the SMC. It still doesn't work. No green light or anything. Any other suggestions on how to fix it? Is it possibly linked to the DVD drive I just got replaced in the computer? (I don't see how they'd be related, but whatever).

if the camera was working fine before the DVD drive replacement, and after you got it back it stopped working, that is an indication that something wrong happened during the repair and the shop needs to fix it free of charge.

  • Built in camera does not work anymore

I have the Toshiba Satellite L655 and Windows 7. I used to use my webcam with no problems, however recently when I start my computer a message pops up saying that the camera has failed to start and to check my camera and restart. The Toshiba media sidebar also no longer pops up. I have tried dowloading the driver and restarting and this does not appear to have helped. Any ideas on what I can do to get it up and running again?

    marinesgirl,
What model number is your computer? There should be a label on the bottom.
In the Start Menu's search field, type "Device Manager" and press ENTER. Is "Imaging devices" listed? If you expand it, is your webcam listed?

  • FaceTime HD Camera (Display) not working with most applications

The Thunderbolt 27" LED Cinema displays built in camera is not working with most applications. The camera does not work with FaceTime, iChat, Skype and Google Talk. FaceTime says "There is no connected camera", even though there is. Weird thing is it DOES work at http://www.testmycam.com. I can't get it to work with any other flash based apps, just testmycam.com.
My MacBook Pro 17" (late 2011) built in camera works perfectly with everything.
    Things I've already tried:
    - Shutdown
    - Restart
    - disconnect/reconnect
    - removing power from display
lame, lame, lame. $1k monitor, flippin' webcam doesn't work.

I think I have found the problem. I decided to go page by page through the forums and found this argument when running a Java program through the console:
    -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true
    So it would be like:
    java -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true SwingSet2
That works flawlessly, so it has to do with direct draw (So it's either DirectX or my video card drivers which are up to date).

  • Web-Cam does not work on Lenovo G480, PLEAS HELP!!

    Hello,
    I have a Lenovo G480 (20165), and my built-in Web-Cam is not working.
When I enable it by pressing Fn+Esc the little light by the Web-Cam turns on, then shuts off after a second.
So I downloaded the Lenovo Easy Capture, and when I open the software, I get a message saying "Failed To Open Camera".
And when I turn on my laptop, the little light comes on for a short moment, then the light shuts off.
I don't know what to do, It's a brand-new laptop and I've never been able to get the Web-Cam to work, not even on Skype.
I would REALLY appreciate the help. Thank you!

  • HT1338 built in camera has stopped working, how can I update or reinstall the drivers

Built in camera has stopped working, how can I reinstall the respective drivers?

Here are my best suggestions for your camera problem, Stephen:
    •  If you have not already done so, shut down Mac, restart,
and try again.  If the camera still does not work, continue.
    • Try ALL relevant suggestions from Apple's Troubleshooting
       article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
(Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD."  Regardless of the name of your Mac's built-in camera, the same info and troubleshooting applies.)
If you need to use the "reset" suggestion, use the correct reset for your Mac.
    • Use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions and then
download and apply the latest Combo Update.  For your Mac OS,
the current version is at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1640
    • Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart
       that completes the Combo update.
Properly applying the Combo version of updates can sometimes correct software problems, but, if your trouble is caused by a hardware problem, there are no user serviceable parts of the camera.
    • If nothing else resolves your problem, yours is likely a hardware issue.
Unless you have a current backup, make one now.
Then use the final "Troubleshooting" suggestion:
"... contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service."

Green light blinks continually...camera does not work in photo booth or face time.Any suggestions?

    Hi Rogerya,
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you may be experiencing issues with the built-in FaceTime camera (also known as iSight) on your MacBook Air. The following resource provides relevant troubleshooting information that you can try:
How to Troubleshoot iSight - Apple Support
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT2090
Important: Follow these instructions in order. Test the camera between steps to see if the issue is resolved.
    Built-in iSight cameras
These steps are for iSight cameras that are built into a computer, such as the iMac G5 (iSight) or later, the MacBook, or MacBook Pro.
    1. See if the issue is application-specific.
Try another application (iSight works with applications like iChat, PhotoBooth, and iMovie HD 6) to see if the iSight camera exhibits the same behavior in all applications. If it only happens in one application, try reinstalling that application.
    2. See if the issue is user-specific.
Test your iSight camera in another user account. If the issue only occurs in one user, the issue would be isolated to user settings.
    3. Find out if the computer recognizes the iSight
Check System Profiler (in the Utilities folder, inside the Applications folder). Under the USB header, check to see if the iSight camera is detected.
    4. Reset SMC or PMU
Reset your computer's SMC or PMU, and then check System Profiler again. (SMC reset instructions for iMac G5 (iSight), Intel-based iMacs; PMU reset instructions for MacBook and MacBook Pro.)
If your built-in iSight camera is still not behaving correctly after trying all these steps, you may need to contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

  • After installing OSX Lion, the built-in camera no longer works.  Solution?

After installing OS X Lion on a late 2010 MacBookPro, the built-in camera no longer works.  Worked beautifully with Snow Leopard.  Reset SMU to no avail.  Any solutions?

Hi, Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate your help with this.
Yes to both questions: iMovie is in the Applications folder, not in any subfolders. And I have reinstalled iMove from the original disc (before and after the OS reinstall) but can only get up to 7.1.4 without buying a later edition of iLife.
The camera definitely worked under Snow Leopard but not since I upgraded from SL to Mountain Lion.
Found the following on this forum:
If you have iLife '09 or older, there have been no iPhoto 8, iMovie 8 or
Garageband 5 (or older) updates relating to Lion or Mountain Lion. The
support and compatibility situations for those versions is unknown as
Apple hasn't said anything. We can only determine compatibility
anecdotally. If it turns out that there is a problem and Apple doesn't
release an update, your only recourse is to buy the latest version of
    the application.
I reinstalled some other iLife apps as well. iDVD went missing after the ML reinstall. When I reinstalled it from the original disc, it wouldn't open and I had to download a manual update to get it working. iWeb previously stopped working after the upgrade to ML (all the menu options were greyed out) but when I reistalled it (together with iMove and iDVD) yesterday, it started working again.
All this seems to point to a compatibilty issue between iLife '08 and ML.
