EOS 450D - Aperture 2.1.4 | Unsupported Image Format

Hi good people...
There seems to be other out there with this problem but I have yet to find a resolution. I am using the following :
Canon EOS 450D
Aperture 2.1.4
Snow Leopard 10.6.1
Neither iPhoto 0'9 (8.1) or Aperture will read and display my 450D CR2 Raw files. I have reinstalled Aperture and made sure the RAW update has been applied. All Apple documentation states it should work but I can't get it to.
Any ideas....I just want to use my new camera....!! Arrr

The 450D is supported; I don't see that the S90 is supported yet.
.CR2 is not a single file format; in fact the RAW data is different for _every single camera_ which means Mac OS X (and Aperture) has to do work to explicitly support it. I'm not familiar with the S90, but if it's brand new, you may be in for a bit of a wait to get RAW format support. Apple typically won't comment or give ETAs, to pre-empt the next question.

Nik just released an update...hopefully for Mavericks support. It appears to be fixing some of the forum user's issues so far.

Aperture 2.1.4 - 'unsupported image format'

Aperture has suddenly gone haywire. All photos apparently lost as they all disappeared and 'unsupported image format' appeared for each one instead - but at the same time they are all showing in the thumbnails at the foot of the screen. They are all JPEGs. So I reinstalled the program, etc and now all photos reinstated except for all scanned images (from various Albums) and a few ordinary photos from one Album. Those exceptions are all JPEGs. I have tried the possible solutions on Apple's 'Aperture 2: Troubleshooting Basics' page but they do not help. Some, but not all, of the missing photos will also not appear when I go into iPhoto and go to File - Show Aperture Library. But some do. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you.

Thanks. The short answer is No. The best situation is from the most recently reinstalled version of Aperture where the result is as described in my previous post. Older versions all seem to be corrupted in the way I described.
A longer answer involves another problem I had. I add geo metadata (probably the wrong term!) to my photos so that, when imported to a mapping program, they show where they were taken. Then, when I put those photos on my iPhone, the mapping feature (Places) also showed where the photos were taken. But then, without warning, all this data was lost from the phone and the mapping feature no longer worked, although it continued to work on the computer. I asked the Genius people at an Apple store about this, but they had no idea and could not help. Now, in respect of the photos restored in Aperture where the 'Unsupported Image Format' message no longer appears, the feature has started working again on my phone.

You mention that 'most' of your files are DNG. Try
running the effected files through Adobe DNG
converter again and then import your reprocessed
files to Aperture and see if the problem persists.
I had a problem with a batch of D2x files converted
to DNG which had been metadata tagged by

Are you getting any of the embedded XMP metadata
coming into Aperture during the import process?
Already tried that multiple times...no luck. I'm wondering though if it might be related to metadata as you suggest. I'm still trying different things to see what happens.
I was able to alleviate the problem on one set of images by painstakingly searching my external drive for the oldest backups I could find - CR2 files from before DNG conversion. I then ran those through DNG Converter and tried importing them again (this time, I embedded NO thumbnail, but I'm not sure if that made the difference - I think it was more likely a fluke in the original conversion that caused the problem). This time, it worked.
Now, the big problem is that I still have a couple hundred images for which I can't seem to locate the original CR2 files. I don't typically keep them after conversion, as I don't have the space for both.

Unsupported image format with 3:2 or 16:9 aspect for Leica Digilux 3

I can import RAW files just fine with my Leica Digilux 3 dslr, but when I import RAW images using 3:2 or 16:9 aspect formats, aperture comes up with unsupported image format. appreciate any feedback.

there have been several threads with similar problems of broken references to raw images; in some cases even with managed raw images, that cannot be reconnected, for example:

One more reason to avoid managed libraries.
The "lsregister" command must exist on your machine. It may move around a bit, because there are many links in the path to current versions.
After the last update I found this direct path (MacOS X 10.8.2):
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Support/lsregister -R /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library
To search the "lsregister" command in your system, try to open the "/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework" in the Finder and to navigate from there:
Typing "open /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework" into the Terminal will open a Finder window in the directory (as you probably will know )
Added: If newly imported raws are recognized without problems it is unlikely to be a problem of missing raw conversion registration. I am just concerned about the error message you get.

"Unsupported Image Format" error ONLY on exposures longer than 4 minutes

When importing my photos to Aperture, I get an "Unsupported Image Format" error, but ONLY on images where my shutter was open for longer than 3 minutes or so. I'm looking at Aperture right now, and I've got one shot that was 184 seconds long - no problem. Next shot, 240 seconds - ERROR. I shoot everything in RAW and have no trouble with any of my "normal" exposure shots - thousands of them. Error shows up only with the shots where I've locked the shutter open for more than 4 minutes.
What the heck is up? I'm *assuming* it's a problem with Digital Camera RAW in OSX, as Preview.app is also unable to display the image. Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 4 have no trouble with these images. Even in Aperture, I see a low-res preview of these "error" images for about two seconds before the error message replaces it.

This problem, unsupported image format for long exposures, has been reported on and off for some time now.
Its not an easy search to phrase but for example I found this Aperture 3 will not recognize RAW files obtained from long ... at dpreview from a while back.
Sorry to say there are no resolutions that I can find. You might want to try and get in touch with Apple. They don;t make it easy to get software support even on there 'pro apps' but if you start with the normal Mac support number you might get to someone who can help.
Additionally you can leave feedback by going to Aperture->Provide Aperture Feedback. There is a setting to report bugs.
Sorry I don;t have anything better to report.

Unsupported Image Format help! - jpeg

I have this normal jpeg file 1600 x 1200 that I downloaded and imported into Aperture. The image worked fine in Finder, it didn't generate a preview/thumbnail but sometimes Finder doesn't always do that but I can open it up in Preview.app and view it just fine. The image also opens up in Adobe Photoshop CS 3 fine also, it just doesn't open in Aperture. In Aperture it will say "Unsupported Image Format" in white letters on a burgandy colored background where the image is supposed to be.
Below is a link one of the images I have this problem with but note that I have this problem with a lot of jpeg files just recently.

If you guys want more images that are facing this same problem I could post links to them but I think if we find the problem with one of the images then we would have found the problem with all of them.

I've been having this problem with scans off my Hasselblad color slides ever since I started using Aperture at like release 1.5. What I'm hearing here generally agrees with my own experience. I'm scanning in 6x6 color slides at the maximum quality available on my scanner, a Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 ED. The results are very large TIFF files at 16 bit color. One of the really frustrating aspects to all this is the error message isn't exactly truthful. I can get the images to display, I just have to keep shutting down and restarting Aperture every time I want to move on to a different image in a shoot.
Here's what happens. I open a project containing these image files. The images all display just fine in the browser. The first image selected in the browser begins to load in the viewer. It takes a while, but it gets in there. Nice. Then I click on another image in the browser and almost immediately I get the "Unsupported Image Format" message.
So I shut down Aperture. Then I restart it. It comes back up on the same project I was just looking at, but before the first image finishes loading in the viewer, I quickly select the other one I wanted to view instead, but had just gotten the "Unsupported Image Format" error on. Lo and behold...it loads into the viewer just fine too. But then when I go to select yet another image, almost immediately I get the "Unsupported Image Format" error.
Obviously the error isn't because the image format is "unsupported" because the images come up just fine. But having to shut down and restart Aperture every time I want to view a another image isn't...well...very productive.
I no problems at all...none...with the 35mm scans at the same scanner settings. Well...except the fact that the black and whites don't appear in the import dialog browser, which I understand is yet another issue with 16 bit TIFFs. But I just cannot work easily and quickly with my Hasselblad stuff and it is getting really frustrating. I've been waiting for over a year for Apple to fix this. Does anyone...Anyone at all...have any clue as to a timeframe for a fix for this?
I can't keep working like this. I really like this software, I love the user interface, I like the convenience of how it nicely generates web galleries and posts them to my iMac account. But the software is getting in my way, and I can't concentrate on what I'm trying to accomplish if I have to keep shutting down and re-starting Aperture just to view my images.

Canon EOS 350D .CR2 pics still 'unsupported image format'?

I was releaved to see updates in Mac OS X (10.4.8) and Aperture 1.5 the other week, hoping it would solve my problem, being able to finally work with my RAW files (.cr2) from the Canon EOS 350D (yes, being in Europe these days).
I followed the posts on the forum throughout the summer, which recommended waiting for the next OS X update (which should support the camera in that raw definition file) and I didn't want to use the workaround, which clearly had problems with the colors on the pics.
After all the updates the other week, nothing has changed on my MBP. Still the 'Unsupported Image Format' on my RAW files. On the other hand, I don't see any posts on problems with the 350D camera anymore as well (only on CR2 files in general).
Am I missing something really basic here (tried rebuild library)? Or, have all the CR2 formats gone down the drain on Aperture 1.5?
Any help is appreciated, as I have already looked into Adobe Lightroom Beta and although I don't want to switch, the files seem to work there...

Yes, the import thumbnail is as you describe, the low res. JPG that is embedded in the RAW wrapper.
10.4.8 needs to be installed prior to Aperture 1.5 .... from a functionality point of view. I am not aware of a dependence that says AP 1.5 has to be uninstalled before a 10.4.8 upgrade or any such, not that AP 1.5 should need re-installing after a 10.4.8 upgrade .... assuming it was working correctly beforehand.
But to this last point, since you have an issue which may be related to AP or OS X, it is likely worthwhile updating both and in order.
Final thought. do you import directly from the CF card / camera vs. using an intermediary tool such as ImageBrowser or DP Professional? I am wondering if Aperture is very OCD aboout the image format wrapper and chokes at the least excuse that other apps. and tools ignore.

CR2 as "Unsupported Image Format" on Aperture 2.1.2?

I just installed aperture on OS 10.5.5 and immediately installed the available update via Software Update. Then, I imported a day's worth of shooting from my EOS 1D Mark iii (one of the models listed on Aperture's Supported Raw Formats webpage - http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html). The .jpegs display fine but my CR2 images only appear as preview thumbnails - when I click on the preview a red box appears with the text: "Unsupported Image Format." I'm a bit incredulous that Apple would fail to support this enormously popular image format - say it ain't so.

Excellent information that confirms my experience. It has only happened to me in the midst of an editing session, and has always been corrected by a restart of the application.
I don't know if it answers Alexandra's original question.
I have also found that Aperture has gotten progressively slower over the last few months, perhaps a function of a growing managed library?? It's to the point where if I edit to fast, I'll start getting beachballs, and have even had the app quit -or go to the red screen/unsupported file type message.
I don't have the latest machine, but it is a fast one, (Mac Pro Quad 3.0 Ghz 11 gb ram and the nVidia 8800 GT graphics card driving 2 23" Cinema Displays) My startup drive is a 750GB Seagate Barracuda partitioned 250/500 with everything but the Aperture library on the 250 partition (100 gb free space left) and only the Aperture library on the 500 partition (aprox 200 GB free). (there are also 3 more 750 gb drives in the machine for Time Machine & other stuff.
This machine should be really fast (it once was) so I may be doing something wrong, but can't figure what is wrong.
Is anyone aware of an article on speeding up aperture? My previews are limited to the default (2500 x2500 aprox) yet my activity window always seems to have a backup of previews to be built once I'm going in an edit session.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Canon EOS 6D - Unsupported Image Format

Hi,
when I import RAW pictures from my Canon EOS 6D to the library, Aperture shows me this message: "Unsupported Image Format".
I updated Aperture to the last available version (3.4.3 - Digital Camera Raw 4.00 - Build 658.1) but nothing changes.
Any ideas?

i previously had issues with the "unsupported image format", but had the issue fixed with an update.
NOW, when i opened Aperture, all the thousands of images i have taken and successfully edited are suddenly once again "unsupported image format"
They are only the RAW images, Jpegs remain normal. Canon 450D, Macbook Pro 17"....

that's kinda my gut instinct about Ap2 and Lion too. I'm talking to Apple about this too but, guess what, they haven't come back with a conclusive answer yet - hence i'm scouring the forums to see if anyone else has already asked Apple the same question and got a definite yes or no out of them.
i've bought and tested Lion and like many of the new features and dislike quite a few too, but given the choice, i'd probably stay on SL for Ap2 (and Front Row, Apple!!). But my hand may be forced as my SL machine is dying and Apple say they won't repair but will give me a new MBP - which only comes with Lion - and Apple have confirmed that the new MBP firmware will not run SL... hence my frantic scramble to see if I can still run Ap2 on Lion
My gripes with Ap3 are too numerous to mention and here isn't really the place to discuss but biggies for me are the removal of gridlines from the Straightening tool and the removal of the ability to use a single keystroke to go from Ap3 windowed Browser mode to viewing a single image in Ap3 full screen - yes, you can go from Ap3 full-screen Browser mode to single image with a keystroke, but staying permanently in Ap3 full-screen Browser mode is not possible as many actions are not available in Ap3 full-screen mode and you have to go to Ap3 windowed mode to access them - in fact some actions actually kick you out of Ap3 full-screen Browser mode back into Ap windowed mode...
if that makes any sense... had to insert 'Ap3' a lot to avoid confusion with the new Lion full-screen mode or i end up saying things like 'changing from Lion-Windowed-Aperture-Windowed mode to either Lion-Full-Screen-Aperture-Windowed mode or Lion-Full-Screen-Aperture-Full-Screen mode...'

Raw Files Appear Deleted or Corrupted Suddenly in Aperture with Unsupported Image Format Error

I have been using Aperture 3, latest update, for the past year. Today, I tried to import new raw files from my new Sony RX1r and, as far as I can see, all raw files in Aperture give the "Unsupported Image Format" and alert symbol in the library where not only new files should be, but also ALL PREVIOUS RAW FILES. These files do no even show up as existing in the iPhoto Library.
This is, needless to say, distressing, as hundreds and hundreds of photos seem lost. Also, the files show a reduced pixel size and file sizes all go to .5 Mb. Some of the photos seemed to show up initially and look fine until I tried to open them, then they all either disappear or show the Unsupported Image Format instead of the opened file. I have tried rebuilding the iPhoto library, but no help.
I have looked in these discussions and see similar problems with Aperture. Perhaps, Apple has not made an update for the RX1r from the RX1 for raw files, but why should all older raw files now be corrupted, especially those recently made with my Olympus OM-D? Had no problem with Aperture until this disaster.

Just an update. Restarted computer and attempted rebuilds of iPhoto library a couple more times and finally files and photos mostly recovered, except for those I had tried to open. Aperture seems to have a problem, or a host of them, dealing with RAW files, and there is no update yet for the Sony RX1R for Aperture or iPhoto. Lightroom 5, on the other hand, seems to work great with these files directly, so that will be where all photos go for now. Will iPhoto and Aperture just become old archives? It is so infuriating that Apple does not allow for simple importing and exporting compatibility with such an excellent program as Lightroom 5 just to protect their somewhat poorly supported Aperture. I've been a staunch Apple supporter and user since the 80's, but having more doubts about the direction this company is taking.

Aperture 3 and DNGs from LX5 raw files: unsupported image format

My LX5 arrived, and I tried converting a raw file to DNG with Adobe DNG Converter 6.2.0.21 beta and importing it into Aperture. No luck: Aperture says it's an unsupported image format. I tried setting the compatibility as far back as possible in the preferences, and still no luck. Any idea why this doesn't work? I used Adobe DNG Converter multiple times to work with raw files from unsupported cameras, so it's a real surprise to get the unsupported image file message.

Unfortunately, this is more about Apple dragging its feet than a cutting edge issue. I got an LX3 and upgraded to Aperture 3 in February of this year. RW2s straight out of the camera always imported just fine. However, I've never been able to get a DNG generated from an RW2 with Adobe DNG converter to work. Interestingly, DNGs from another file format I use (PEF) work fine in Aperture.
I submitted a issue report to Apple about the RW2 to DNG problem back in March, and like so many other suggestions to them, it seems to have vanished into the ether.

10.5.2; Canon 1DsM3 Raw Files = "Unsupported Image Format" in Aperture

Just did the update and pointed Aperture to a folder of Canon 1Ds Mark III raw files (standard raw files, no sRaw or anything like that). Thumbnail previews are grey and Viewer says, "Unsupported Image Format".
Tried rebooting and verifying/fixing permissions. No help. No thumbnails, no images in Aperture.
Canon 1Ds Mark III raw files do show fine in the finder and in Quick Look.

I have the same exact issue.
I do get the same error with 1Ds MIII raws.
Also the G9 raws are not working.
Finally after 3 months it's still not working
I could imagine that there is the need to edit some property file (like I have read before in the forum somewere) to add the new cameras to the list of supported cameras.
Are the D3, D300 raws working?

Why do G3 raw files show as "Unsupported Image Format" in Aperture?

I am moving towards shooting in raw, and as an experiment I imported some sample raw files from the publicly available text images on the Photography Blog. When I try to look at these images, I get a black screen with a warning triangle and the message "Unsupported Image Format". This happens for all the different raws, including some G3 raw files (.rw2). Oddly, it can read the EXIF metadata and has all the information about shooting settings etc. If I import the same files into iPhoto, it displays the images properly and allows editing, etc.
I have a workaround, which I've also tried with my Fuji X10 raws (still not supported on MacOSX), of running them through the Adobe DNG converter, and then looking at the dng files which seem to work fine. But it's a pain.
This has to be one of those simple "D'oh" things, but I can't see what I'm doing wrong!

Thanks Leonie, the second part revealed that I have been an idiot, although the behaviour is still surprising. The folder has a mix of DMC-G3 raws, Fuji X10 raws, and DNG files produced from both. For the Fuji X10 files, the DNGs produce images and the raws produce the "Unsupported file format" message. The latter is not surprising, the former a little surprising (as I've heard that DNGs only work when the associated raw works). The last two remarks don't directly address my problem (or perceived problem), but they perhaps set the frame for my expectations.
For the G3 files, when I look at it more closely, the G3 raws DO display correctly, while the G3 DNGs give "Unsupported file format". I had managed to fool myself into thinking it was the other way round (Aperture does rather hide the full file name).
So I was completely wrong, Aperture does support DMC-G3 raw, it's just it's DNG support that's a bit weird. However, it's on my side if I need to use X10 raws (via the DNG step). In fact so far I've given up the latter, as the noise levels are so much greater than in Fuji's in-camera JPEG conversion.
So, thanks very much for your help. Now I remember the first rule of system support: never trust what the customer tells you! (I know you're not really customer support, but I guess the same rule applies.) Thanks again
