Hi,
I am using my 5D Mark III with the Black Magic HyperDeck Shuttle 2 and I can't figure out how to get the camera to trigger the deck to record automatically.
Any ideas?  I thought I set all the menu settings correctly in camerra with the new firmware.
Thanks,

  • EOS 5D Mark III Firmware Update: Clean HDMI Output and AF Improvements Explained

Canon has released an important firmware upgrade for the EOS 5D Mark III that will undoubtedly benefit DSLR cinematographers and still shooters alike. The 1.2.1 update enables the camera to record clean, uncompressed digital video data (YCbCr 4:2:2 8 bit) with encoded time code over the HDMI output, while simultaneously displaying video on the rear LCD and recording internally to CF or SD cards. This adds an enormous amount of flexibility to what is already one of the world’s top DSLR camera choices.

5D Mark II is a discontinue product already. There will be no more update. Even if for some strange reason, there is an update, it may not address your issue.

  • Updating 5D Mark III firmware

I am trying to update my 5D Mark III firmware. The download is on the CF card but the camera cannot read it. What have i done wrong?  I use an Apple iMac

When you download the new firmware, you should get a file named "eos5d3-v121-mac.dmg" on your hard drive (probably in your downloads folder.)
Open "Finder" on your Mac and double click that file to mount the disk-image (.dmg) file.
This will open a Finder window showing the contents of that .dmg file.  You will notice two things:
    1)  A file named:  5D300121.FIR
    2)  A folder named:  update-procedure-pdf
The folder contains PDF documents with instructions in several languages.
All you really need to do is copy the ".FIR" file to your memory card.  The 5D300121.FIR should be placed in the top-level directory on the card (do not place it in a sub-folder.)
Eject the card from your Mac.
Insert the card into your camera.
    Power up the camera.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FULLY CHARGED BATTTERY (never attempt an update on a battery that's near empty).
Press the "Menu" button on the camera.
Use the front wheel to scroll to SET UP page 4 (gold "wrench" icon ... 4th page).
Use the rear dial to scroll down to the 4th row.  This will show your current firmware version.
    Press the "Set" button.
It will show the current version with a "Cancel" and "Ok" option.  Click "Ok" to proceed.
It will check the memory cards for files in the top-level directory ending with ".FIR" and display your choices.
Since you'll only have one .FIR file, it should show an entry for "Cardx: 5D300121.FIR"
Highlight that firmware and press "Set"
It will confirm one last time that you want to upgrade from your current firmware to the new firmware.  When you are ready, select "Ok" to proceed.
It will now begin the update.  It will display a progress graph.
It will give you a message with explicit instructions to not touch any buttons or switches until it is finished.
It will tell you it is done.
Canon recommends you now POWER OFF the camera and...
    EJECT THE BATTERY.
    Wait 2 full seconds.
    Re-insert the battery.
    Power up the camera.
    You're done!
That last bit about removing the battery is to force the camera to completely boot from firmware.  The power swtich is really a soft switch... it doesn't technically deprive the camera of power.  "technically" your camera is in a kind of power-saving sleep state.... except it will not be awakened by accidentally pressing a button like a true "sleep" state.  That's why they tell you to remove and then re-insert the battery.

  • Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III RAW support PLEASE!

Seriously, the camera was announced in August 2007. 6 months have passed and Apple has failed to provide a RAW support update for this camera!
Why is this program targeted towards professionals if RAW support takes longer than a half a year?
If this goes on much longer, I might have to make the dreaded switch to Lightroom. And i truly do not want to do that.
    Sorry, I am upset.

Large Photographic software developers (of which I'd consider Apple, with its iPhoto and Aperture applications, to be part of the group) can get early access to preproduction copies these high end cameras so their RAW definitions can be nearly complete at camera rollout time.
This is a process problem that Apple has (batching RAW definition creation and distribution for all cameras, mostly all those digicams, with OS updates). Apple needs to see this (time delay) is a problem for their Pro application users and set up a new process to to fast-track DSLR RAW definitions (creation/distribution).
The E-3 has been waiting since its release in October as well.
Word is that the new Nikon Defs are in the OS X 10.5.2 update (according to beta testers), so the E-3 and Cannon EOS 1Ds Mark III is probably in there too. Couple of weeks now...would be the expectation...no word on what you'd do if you're running 10.4.

  • EOS 5D Mark III ratings don't transfer to LR 4.1

I can't see that ratings transfer to Adobe Lightroom 4.1, but they do transfer to Canon DPP just fine. I think I've looked through all EXIF and IPTC fields and can't find the ratings data anywhere in LR. Where is it supposed to show in Lightroom?
    My workflow:
    - Rate RAW images in EOS 5D Mark III on compact flash
    - Remove compact flash form 5D and plug in to USB card reader.
    - Import in Lightroom 4.1 using LR's import function (on Windows Vista 32-bit SP3)
I can't see any ratings in LR, but when looking at the images in DPP and in Windows Explorer (with latest Canon RAW codec) the ratings are there. As I can see the ratings in DPP and Explorer it feels like a setting in Lightroom isn't right.
Any help on this issue would be great.

That might be true, but I've read on numerous sites (e.g. http://www.wired.com/reviews/2012/06/canon-eos-5d-mark-iii/, http://mansurovs.com/canon-5d-mark-iii-review, http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/star_ratings_set_in_5d_mark_iii_not_ transferred_to_lightroom_v4) that in-camera ratings are transferred to LR. It just doens't seem to work for me.
Any help on this issue is very welcome.

  • Nutzt Lightroom die Korrekturdaten für Vignettierung und Aberration der Canon EOS 5D Mark III?

    Hallo,

    ;o)
    Gruß Jörg

    Hi WC!
Thanks for posting on the forum.
It is very likely that the issue is with the cards you have tried and not the camera.
You mentioned that you were going to try a faster card.
Were you able to do so yet?
If so, how did the faster card perform?
Do you experience the same issue when recording to a high-speed CF card instead of an SD card?

  • Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III and Aperture 2?

I was wondering if anyone using a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III can confirm if they're able to shoot tethered using Aperture 2? Though it's listed under the RAW support page, this model of camera is not supported in the knowledge base article called: Tips on tethered shooting.
I tried the demo and though it registered my camera, it wouldn't allow me to capture. Not sure if it's a limitation of the demo, or ignorance on my part. If you know for certain one way or another, please share.
    Thanks.

To the best of my knowledge the tethered shooting does not work with any of the newer Canon DSLRs. A workaround that may be good for you is the Aperture hot folder script that I used with Aperture 1.5. If you can't find t just hit the thread back.

  • Canon EOS 5d Mark III

I bought yesterday the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, when can I get the Camera RAW 6.7 for Lightroom 4.0?

Several abusive replies have been deleted from this discussion. Personal attacks on other users will not be tolerated.
Support for the 5D MklII is included in LR4.1, and how that works (including sharpening) is of course a perfectly-valid point of discussion. Whether the camera itself is sharp or not isn't anything to do with Adobe software, and everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I know people who think it's fine, and others who've taken their bodies apart to remove the OLPF. Both are convinced about what they see, and they'd argue about it all night.
If you put three photographers in a room you get four opinions on which camera to use, but let's keep things polite.

  • Canon EOS 5D Mark III Using a 70-300mm Lens without a flash?

I just recently purchased a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and would like to know what you would recommend as a good setting to take photos of someone bowling at a center with the camera using a Canon 70-300mm Lens without a flash? Thanks in advance!

Yes the black one since that is the one I have at this time and it seems to work! Why wouldn't I want to use this one?

I don't know if it is the best, but I use one of these on my 5D III.

  • EOS 5D Mark III - Serial Number EXIF Error

    Hi,
I just enquired of PhaseOne as to why their DAM & RAW processor does not show the Camera Serial Number and I received the following reply:
"The simple reason for this is that the 5DmkIII does not write it in the standard EXIF data which the 5D and the 5DmkII did.
I have attached a EXIF extract from a 5DmkII and a 5DmkIII to show it.
This essentialy is a Canon firmware issue or feature depending on how you see it"
Is this going to be corrected in a new Firmware release or is it a feature of the 5D Mark III?

I guess the question is, "Is there a "standard" location for the camera serial number in a RAW file?" Or is the author of a RAW processor responsible for knowing where it is and handling it accordingly? With the exception of a few artificial outliers like Adobe's ACR, aren't all RAW formats camera-specific?
    Hi,
Yes there is a standard promulgated and agreed to by camera manufacturers from The Japan Electronic Industries Development Association (JEIDA) which produced the initial definition of Exif. Version 2.1 of the specification is dated 12 June 1998. The latest, version 2.3, released on 26 April 2010 and revised in May 2013, was jointly formulated by JEITA and CIPA. Exif is supported by almost all camera manufacturers.
Unfortunatly though, camera vendors also store important information only in proprietary makernote fields, instead of using available Exif standard tags. An example for this is Nikon's ISO settings tag and now it seems, the Body Serial number tag on the Canon EOS 5D Mk III is used for something else.
It leads me to believe it is a tag error because my other Canon cameras don't have any problems.
    Don.
Maybe they put the serial number where they did in order to make it more resistant to Exif-editing software. If so, maybe it's a feature rather than an error. It will be interesting to see where the serial number appears in RAW files from the 7D2.
