EPM Planning on VMWare

Hi all
Our physical hardware is expiring and we want to setup our Production Planning and Reporting 11.1.2.1 systems on VMWare to save costs. They are giving us the same resources on VMWare. Our Dev,Test, QA systems are already on VMWare and we have had no problems at all. Our Essbase is staying on Physical hardware.
My issue is that Oracle does not support VMWare and if a problem appears with Planning or Reporting that we cannot duplicate on physical hardware as Oracle might suggest we do, then we are out of support. It is impossible to quickly acquire the physical hardware to replicate and the downtime of the application would never allow this.
Has anybody had any issues with Planning or Reporting on VMWare that Oracle has not supported? As I mentioned, our Essbase will stay on Physical hardware so any IO or Calcs should not be a factor.

There are plenty of customers using the EPM System on VMWare without issues. However, something I always advice and share with clients is to look at the following KB from Oracle: Support Position for Oracle Products Running on VMWare Virtualized Environments [Oracle KB ID 249212.1]
My recommendation for good performance is to not overcommit your hosts and don't share with others highly utilized VMs. If possible, have dedicated hosts to Hyperion Servers

Oracle EPM Planning 11.1.2.1 - Ziplogs utility not working on all servers
We have Planning 11.1.2.1 distributed so that Planning web app, EAS etc. are on own webservers and Essbase is on separate cluster.
Currently we have an issue with ziplogs utility - it seems to work on Essbase servers gathering all necessary ODL logs for over 100MBs, but on Planning Webservers ziplogs utility seems to start, but generates only empty 1kb zip file without any content.
We haven't touched logging otherwise, everything should be pretty much in original state.
Unfortunately I can't remember now exactly, but I have a a hunch that ziplogs utility worked prior patching Planning element on webservers to 11.1.2.1.600.
Other servers or elements haven't been patched (although Oracle recommends also FS, EB etc. to be patched to 11.1.2.1.600). I'm wondering, could this be the reason as in a way FS and EB are on same patching level whereas Planning is not?
Also, there seems to be a bit of limited diskspace on webservers (still waiting for extension), but I would imagine lack of diskspace for preparing any temp files etc. would results in some errors, the problem is that ziplogs doesn't give any errors, just runs very short time and then ends bringing 1kb empty file.
Has anyone experienced anything similar and are you perhaps able to give quick guidance how to enhance or modify ziplogs batch file etc. to make it create a bit of logging of its own actions?
Thanks in advance if anyone has ideas what could be the root cause for this or faced something similar.

Okay, I was able to get it installed and Common Components installed correctly this time. I still can't access workspace though.
Is there something I need to do before I can browse to http://localhost:19000/workspace/index.jsp?
All I get is the following error:

Want some pointers to the error that I am running into. The application supports webcenter and when we bring up the web page we get the error below
oracle.jbo.NoDefException: JBO-25002: Definition oracle.epm.planning.application.ui.DataControls of type null is not found
caused by the nested error Caused by: oracle.mds.core.MetadataNotFoundException: MDS-00013: no metadata found for metadata object "/oracle/epm/planning/application/ui/DataControls.dcx"
at oracle.mds.core.MetadataObject.getBaseMO(MetadataObject.java:1279)
There is no file called DataControls.dcx under the "/oracle/epm/planning/application/ui/ package.
How do we remove the runtime reference that webcenter still seems to hold onto?

It supports WebCenter Customizable Components tag library in the ViewController project. The DataControls.dcx file which was under the oracle.epm.planning.application.ui package was still present under the classes folder. Since this file was deleted from the JDEV view it seemed that it should not be included. It worked on my environment but not for others who did not have the file stored under classes folder under the ViewController project.
I have the problem resolved now. Thanks for all the pointers.

EPM Planning & Budgeting Partner Implementation Boot Camp Ready 2 Launch

The Oracle PartnerNetwork launched a new Implementation Boot Camp program at OOW 2008. Since then Oracle has made available to partners ~8 different Boot Camps and expect to have near 20 by the end of February 2009.
That said, we are close to finalizing the content for an EPM Planning & Budgeting Implementation Boot Camp, and I am interested to hear if there is any interest in this Boot Camp among this audience.
Goals / Objectives
The EPM Planning Bootcamp will provide implementation instruction on Oracle’s EPM System products Planning functionality. The bootcamp will be a fast-paced, five-day class, teaching students what they need to know in order to implement and manage EPM Planning applications. Goals for the bootcamp are described below.

Planning on VMWARE

We are running 11.1.1.4 on VMWare. I have two questions :
First off, where do I find compatibility of 11.1.1.4 with VMWARE versions ? Did not see anything related to VM technology in the compatibility matrix.
Secondly, we are planning on upgrading the VM's. I've never upgraded a VM, so was wondering if that requires me to turn off all services while the upgrade is in process.

Not sure what you are actually upgrading but it is probably all the EPM related components are stopped.

Interface/Functional Differences between EPM Planning 11.1.1.3 & 11.1.2.2.

We are considering a migration from Hyperion Planning 11.1.1.3 to 11.1.2.2 and have found lots of documentation describing the technical exercise but little on the functional differences between the two products that would be of more interest to our users.
Q1. Will 11.1.2.2 appear to our users as fundamentally a different product requiring retraining, changes to business procedures etc?
Q2. Is there any documentation out there that compares the functionality and 'look' of the two releases that I have missed and that would help?

It is probably worth setting up a quick 11.1.2.3 POC planning instance to have a look at the new version of planning to see whether you feel that additional training will be required - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/epm_planning_rapid_deploy_1112200.pdf, the main change is the look and feel with the ADF functionality the concept of planning has not changed, the ADF functionality can be switched off if you want to revert back to the old style.

Configuring Automatic Failover for EPM Planning Cluster

We are trying to test automatic failover using a Planning(11.1.2.2)/weblogic cluster containing 2 physical servers and a Weblogic proxy plug-in for OHS.
I understand that to enable this we must configure in-memory replication of HTTP session states and to do this, (according to various sources including ID 779350.1) the weblogic.xml file must include a descriptor set up as follows:

yes, it can be load balanced in hyperion registry i believe, seen it once only drawback is ,if a JVM goes down while processing a request it needs to be manually started, however the url will switch automatically

Hyperion EPM running on VMWARE

Does any one know what the total number of users that can be accomodated on a Hyperion version 11.x implemented on VMWARE?
The applicaion suite is Shared Services, EAS, Provider Services, BI Core, Workspace, HFM/FDM and Essbase

It depends on how you build that environment out. Having all those services installed on one server and having a lot of users (even a few - unless you dedicate enough resources for those few) isn't going to exactly work out well....
VMWare performance may also not be as good as physical server performance. This really depends on your VMWare deployment.

Epm Planning Security

Hi all,
I m using Hyperion Planning 11.1.1.3 . My applications are created via EPMA
My security set up has a planner which should not be able to access dimension library or application library.
So i have not provision the user for application or dimension library.
But when i login into workspace using that user , he can access the link
NAVIGATE -> Dim Lib or App Lib.
Although he cannot add dimension or application or deploy application , i just want to know if there is any way to disable or hide the link for application library and dimension library in workspace.

I do not think there is a way as if you have a user that is not provisioned to anything will still be able to view EPMA functions like App library, etc

Unable to load entities into Planning using OutlineLoad utitlity

Good day all,
One of our Planning admins needs us to load some new entities for her. We've done this off and on with her Planning app for the last year without a problem. However, over the last couple of days we have not been able to load her latest metadata. She's massaged the load file almost half a dozen times and we get the same error message every time. If anyone has any ideas what it does not like about the header values, I would very much appreciate any feedback.

Change month of a report by selecting the Year in the EPM context bar

Hi All,
I am very new on BPC 10 and actually I am trying to make some report.
I just try to make a simple thing : display all the month of a year choose by a user (without using the "Editor Report")
I made a simple report using EPMOlapMember, but when I try to change the year in the EPM context bar in the "Time" dimension, the month displayed does not correspond to the year context and even if I refresh my report.
What I would like to do is to allow users to select the year or the month+year in the EPM context bar or by an other way and that the report refresh.
The finality of this report is to compare the operating cost of a month with the year before, in actual or budget, in periodic or YTD, to calculate variance.
Below is the structure I would like to have on a single worksheet:
Scénario : A user choose the month (generally of the month of the current year)
FIRST (periodic) : Display all the month of the month/year (selected by the user)
SECOND (periodic) : 1st column : Display the month/year (selected by the user) in actual
                                    2nd column : Display the month/year (selected by the user) in budget
                                    3rd column : Display the month/year-1 (selected by the user) in actual
                                    4&5th column : Just simple for the delta
THIRD (year to date) : 1st column : Display the month/year (selected by the user) in actual
                                          2nd column : Display the month/year (selected by the user) in budget

EPM 11.1.2.3 configuration question

Hi,
I have setup two solaris zones(hostname#1 & hostname#2), on the hostname#1, I installed Oracle 11g and created database, and also installed and configured EPM foundation services(including OHS) & essbase server. On hostname#2, I installed& configured EPM foundation services(including OHS), reporting and Planning applications.
In the hostname#1 database, I created a new user with the commands as:
SQL> create user EPM11122 identified by essbase;
SQL> grant dba,connect,resource to EPM11122;
SQL> select * from dba_role_privs where grantee='EPM11122';
So in the configuration of EPM on both hosts, the db configuration was set to connect to the db on the hostname1 with user EPM11122/essbase. The installation & configuration work fine without issue. However, when I start EPM on hostname#2 with "start.sh", and tried to access "http://hostname#2:19000/workspace", after login as admin, it generated errors as:
1. The startup document specified does not exist in the repository.
Select a new startup document on the General preferences tab
2. Could not find a Hyperion Reporting and Analysis server running on localhost at port 6800.
Please verify your server connect string and confirm that the server is up
I'm wondering if anything wrong in my configuration causing the above problem? In addition, I'm suspect if the above setups correct(put planning & essbase onto separate hosts?) If yes, how can planning communicate with essbase as I didn't anyting in the EPM configuration on hostname#2 asking for the essbase info on the hostname#1.

Just checking a few logs for starting the EPM:
"start-FoundationServices0-out.log", "start-Planning0-out.log", showed the bellow message at the end:
"<WebLogicServer> <server started in RUNNING mode>"
The start-RaFramewok0-out.log", "start-FinaancialReporting0-ou.log" has exception messages in the log
"GsmNot Found
com.brio.one.services.globalservicemanager.GSMException: GsmNotFound"
The "agent.log" under ReportingAnalysis complained:
"No agent is configured rom HIT registry, please make sure the registry is configured properly"
I'm the first-time installing & configuring EPM planning & essbase. Can you plz confirm if the bellow procedure of installation & configuration is correct or not especially the db configuration:
1. On the oracle db created, created a new user and gave the 'dba', 'connect', 'resource' privilege
2. install EPM foundation services & essbase on the hostname#1, when confiured essbae, pick "Perform first-time configuration of database", connect to the db with username/password created in step#1
2. install EPM foundation servies & planning on the hostname#2, when configured planning, pick "Connect to a previous configured database", connect to the db with username/password created in step#2

Planning data sources management

Hi Everyone
I'm using Hyperion Planning 11.1.2.3.0.26. I've faced problem when tried to configure data source for EPM Planning Application. Data source creation wizard is always finish with failed status. Using the same parameters I'm able to create data source for classic application with no problems. I stuck and don't know what to do next.
I'd be greatful for any kind of help.

Oracle Balance Sheet Planning Initialization

Hello all,
I am trying to install Oracle Balance Sheet Planning over Oracle EPM Planning 11.1.2.3 running on a CentOS 6 64bits server.
I am using the official guide, Oracle Financial Services Balance Sheet Planning Product Configuration Guide 6.1, and I am stuck at point 5. When I try to initialize the application (selecting only the BSP option) nothing happens, and I can't see any information in EPM logs that could help me to determine what went wrong.
Has anyone succeeded in installing BSP on EPM 11.1.2.3 in Linux or Windows? All help is greatly appreciated.

I have installed and configured Hyperion Planning 11.1..2.3 .500 , But not able to find Hyperion PS3 bundles BSP 6.1 files

BSP files. BSP needs to be subsequently “initialized” in order to access it.
If CAPEX and/or WORKFORCE applications are required, initialize CAPEX and/or
WORKFORCE after BSP initialization is complete.
Note: For PS3, sequence of initialization to be BSP, CAPEX, and then
WORKFORCE.
