EPS/AI files look jagged when importing/rasterizing

When importing an EPS or AI file and then rasterizing it (doesn’t matter what resolution) the image looks very jagged/pixilated… even and 600res - a lot mort than it should – or should I say used to when I imported. Did I accidentally mess with the settings? Anyone experience this?
btw this website always seems so SLOW acting (for the past 5 years)

Did you check the antialiasing checkbox? (s. screenshot)

Oh no, it was never a fast site. You know, Adobe ist a very small company, living in a garage...

  • Why do images within a PDF look jagged when viewed in Acrobat Pro 10.1.6?

    Using a MacBook Pro running Mac OS version 10.7.5 with NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB graphics card. High-resolution source images look fine in other software, and embedded images in a PDF look fine when viewed on Google Drive, but curves and diagonal lines look jagged when viewed in Acrobat Pro 10.1.6. Checking smoothing options in Preferences only adjusts the position of the jagged edges; it neither enhances nor ameliorates them.
    I created a sample PDF to illustrate the problem I'm having. Created in illustrator, exported to PNG and converted to PDF. Here is a screenshot of the source PNG side-by-side with the PDF I created from it:
    Please note that when I preview the PDF in Finder, and when I view the PDF in Chrome using Google Drive, the image looks fine. Here's a link to the sample PDF:
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/77f5m6
    Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks!

    Unfortunately, as I mentioned in my original post, I've already tried toggling smoothing options. They don't make the jagged edges go away—they just change them slightly. In some cases, as with the sample file provided, it does help smooth the art out, but it never looks as good as it did going in, in a recent project, toggling smoothing options didn't affect the appearance of the image at all. Zoom does not appear to relieve the artifacting.
    A little clarification: this PDF was created from a flat PNG, but I have had this issue with PNGs and TIFFs as well, generated by both Photoshop and Illustrator. To reiterate, the PDFs display fine in other software—Finder preview looks great, and the same file viewed in my browser via Google Drive looks as intended as well. A colleague was able to replicate this issue in Acrobat on his Windows machine. This appears to be a rendering issue specific to Acrobat with regards to the files I use it to create.

  • Illustrator vector files look blurred when zoomed on in in AE

    I just have text from a illustrator file, imported in to after after effects. When I scale the text, the quality isn't affect, but when i zoom in, the text is blurred, I have the continuously rasterize box clicked, and it's still blurred.
    How can I fix this problem? Thanks

    >  I mean when I scale the text up it doesn't get affected, just when I zoom.
    That's not actually a problem. That's normal. When you scale a layer with continuous rasterization, the vector information is converted into a new set of pixels to make things sharp. When you just zoom in a preview, you're not actually changing any pixels in the composition; you're just zooming in on the existing pixels for a closer look.
    from After Effects Help:
    "Note: After Effects renders vector objects before zooming (scaling for preview), so some vector objects may appear jagged when you zoom in on them. This apparent pixelation for zooms does not affect scaling of layers or rendering to final output. "

  • Why do my DV files look better when played in MPEG Streamclip than iMovie?

    My home movie DV files look washed out (compared to what my tapes looked like I played them on the TV years ago) when played with both iMovie '06 and iMove '11. The claim has been made that if I retransfer my tapes using iMovie '06 (rather than '09, which I used last time, or '11), there will be a dramatic improvement in the visual quality (and there will be some unspecified benefits if I set the dial to 48K audio). HOWEVER, if I play the files I already have in MPEG Streamclip, the visual quality improves substantially without any retransfer. Here is my question: Why? Why do my iMovie-imported files look better in MPEG Streamclip than in iMovie?
    Here is my layman's answer: algorithms. When MPEG Streamclip encounters the exact same arrangements of molecules (or whatever), it has some plan for what to do with them that is smarter than what iMovie does. Is this another sign or way that iMovie is not well suited for DV?

    Please go to my website where I have posted new instructions on working with DV.
    This keeps both interlaced fields from FireWire capture through to a DVD. All the lines means no lost quality when editing DV or Digital8.
    It also solves the washed-out color problem.

  • IPhoto gives import error "file not valid" when import more than one photo

    Trying to import lots of photos.
    Every time I try to import more than a few, I get an error that "The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type of the files may not contain valid data)."
    When I go back to importing just one at a time, it works fine every time.
    I have tried rebuilding the iPhoto library as well.
    I have tried also not copying into the iPhoto library and copying into the iPhoto library (using Preferences/Advanced/Importing).
    Any help would be great.
    This is painful doing one-by-one, and each one I bring in shows as a separate event...
    Every once in a while I will get lucky and it will import more than 5, though I will still get the error before it imports all selected. Ugh!

    Unfortunately did not work.
    And now a silly question - how do I get to be able to see my original iPhoto library? When I try to open it, I don't see any of the albums and mobileme galleries I had created anymore (though I can still see them on the web)

  • Text looks jagged when converting PDF to image using Cocoa on Leopard

    Hello,
    I have a program that composites the pages of a PDF into a single image with each page stacked on top of each the previous one. The program works fine, but the font rendering quality is much lower when run from anything but a Snow Leopard system. In Leopard, the text looks jagged and not antialiased properly. Does anyone know a fix for this? Here is my code.
    NSString* path = [[oPanel filenames] objectAtIndex: 0];
    NSPDFImageRep *pdf = [NSPDFImageRep imageRepWithContentsOfFile: path];
    int pageHeight = 765;
    int pageWidth = 990;
    int pages = [pdf pageCount];
    int height = pageHeight * pages;
    NSImage *compositeImage = [[NSImage alloc] initWithSize:NSMakeSize(pageWidth, height)];
    [compositeImage lockFocus];
    for (int i = 0; i < pages; i++) {
    [pdf setCurrentPage: i];
    NSImage *page = [[NSImage alloc] init];
    [page addRepresentation:pdf];
    NSSize size = [pdf bounds].size;
    int width = round(pageHeight * size.width / size.height);
    [page drawInRect: NSMakeRect(0, height - pageHeight * (i + 1), width, pageHeight)
    fromRect: NSZeroRect
    operation: NSCompositeSourceOver
    fraction: 1.0];
    [page release];
    [compositeImage unlockFocus];
    NSBitmapImageRep *rep = [NSBitmapImageRep imageRepWithData: [compositeImage TIFFRepresentation]];
    NSData *imageData = [rep representationUsingType: NSJPEGFileType properties: nil];
    [imageData writeToFile:@"/Users/devongovett/Desktop/out.jpg" atomically: YES];
    Thanks for any help you might be able to give!

    Without knowing anything about how to draw into a PDF in code: the problem might not be in your code but in Leopard's rendering.
    I bet you are testing just with Apple's own Preview app -- can you test with something else, for example, the Acrobat Reader, on both systems? There is a good chance your image is just fine.

  • Captured .avi file much shorter when imported as Premiere CS3 clip.

    I'm new to Premiere CS3. My first project is to convert several old VHS tapes to DVD. My analog camcorder plays into an analog video-to-Firewire converter (ADSTech Pyro A/V Link). The Firewire digital stream was smoothly captured by Premiere and sent to my NTSF-formatted scratch disk under MS Windows XP Pro. The single .avi file (about 5 GB) plays back nicely in Windows Media Player which indicates a total length of 18min, 34sec. But when imported into a Premiere project, only the first 1min, 18sec appears.
    What's up?

    John--
    I downloaded and ran GSpot v2.70a on my AVI file. Lot's of data!
    In the GSpot "Container" window it reports these lines:
    File Length Correct
    DV Type 2 AVI
    Multipart OpenDML AVI (5 parts)
    (41160 frames in first part, -96 frames follow)
    The "Video" report window says "Codec(s) are installed" with the name "DVC/DV Video." Actual length is 22m, 46.979s (which differs from my original statement because there a stretch of blank tape conversion after the actual content).
    I think I'll repeat the transfer and be watching at the critical times.
    Thanks for the pointer to GSpot and also thanks, Jim, for your response.

  • A photoshop pic looks pixelated when imported; why?

    In photoshop, FCE, Preview, et al, this file looks terrific. Whenever I bring it into DVDSP 4, it pixelates(sp?). It doesn't matter if it's a psd, tif, jpeg, pict.
    Am at a loss to understand.
    Appreciate any help given!
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi Nucci:
    Whenever I bring it into DVDSP 4, it pixelates(
    Where are you using the pictures: menus, slideshows, drop zones?
    A general answer for using pictures in DVDSP is not give them more pixels that the resolution of your project. Forget all you know about resolution of graphic files and just take in account your project settings. If you work in NTSC, then any pixel beyond 720x480 will give you only problems, because DVDSP will have to scale the image.
    You can find good information in DVDSP User Manual about sizes and recomendatins for each use.

  • Vector shapes suddenly looks jagged when exported from InDesign to pdf

    I've read several discussions on pdf export topics but none of them seem to solve this issue. I have an indesign document with multiple pages, its both vector shapes, text and pixel graphics. I worked on this for weeks and I exported this document to pdf numerous times and it all looked good every time I did it. All of a sudden I started to get a very bad looking export, just out of the blue the shapes, logos etc got this jagged look and it looks aweful - see my enclosed examples.
    I have done nothing to my pdf export setup, InDesign setup or any screen preferances. It's just a mystery to me. It seems to be hurting all my sirculare shapes and not my text in general! Every pixel image / photography exports perfect to pdf. My page display is set to smooth text rendering in my pdf preferences. What's up? What puzzles me is this happened so sudden after numerous fine exports.  I'm using InDesign CS6.
    This is the O in a logo that's been placed on a page. The right one is what I get when I export to pdf now, the left one is what I used to get

    John, your are very wrong about post #2. I personally had a rendering problem that was all solved by setting the opacity to 99.9% - it was exported horribly but fixed by this operation. You can read other user stories that confirms this too. But this is not the same issue so let's leave it at that. I just wanted to mention it in terms of having jagged exports.
    There's been no updates thats been changing the Acrobat settings. Acrobat has a default setting in terms of page display that I haven't changed ever as a matter of fact. I shared that info in case someone asked. I'm not connected to any printer, the file is for screen view and third partie receivers can print if they need to (I'm not connected to any printer at work, there's a no print policy). Watching the corporate identity material look terrible on the screen is hardly something a marketing manager likes to do and I don't wanna be the designer responsible for that. So all I want is to solve this mystery and get things back to how it was just two days ago. As described nothing is changed in terms of technical things AND the same terrible results occur when opening a new indd file with a new vector file and exporting that. So the error is not connected to a spesific document or file.
    I remember having export rendering problems of all kinds in CS3, CS4 and CS5, it was all sort of quirky operations I had to do to solve them. Once I actually sat on the phone talking to a technical advisor at Adobe in Ireland while he was trying to explain that this was one of those weak spots of InDesign vs Acrobat. I was emailed a script, if that's not a bugfix I don't know what is. He tried to explain how to embedd the file into the installation setup but the end of the story was a full CS4 MA Collection refund. I'm trying to avoid placing foreign calls this time around and nothing has helped so far. I've been reading endless forum threads different places that describes the problem I have but they never end up with a solution for InDesign CS6 and export routines. It's just a series of errors and questions. I've turned the stone a million times, but all I see is...stone

  • Footage looks corrupt when imported into After Effects

    Hi folks,
    My usual workflow involves starting an edit in FCP and exporting sections that I want to add something to in AE, rendering them out and importing back in to FCP.
    I have recently got a Sony EX3 and have run into a problem after the first shoot:
    When bringing a clip in to AE from FCP, I start a new comp and it looks fine - but scrub forward a little and the clip is mostly green. It's like artifacts that take up the vast majority of the comp. Often there are a few squares which are not green (I've attached an image of this). After that it's basically fully green, with some of the image barely visible, like some sort of find edges effect.
    Footage SEEMS to be fine if I drag in the .mov files (before FCP), but I am exporting Quicktimes from FCP using the same settings and codec..
    Can anyone help me out? I can provide more info if I'm not being clear..
    Thanks
    Mike Chalmers

    Yeah, and you are using FCP 12 and AE CS 8000... See my point? Without telling us exactly what versions of the programs, what CoDecs and Export settings you are actually using, your post is not making too much sense. There could be any number of things at work here, some of which are known like issues with ProRes or Quicktime in general, but if that's not it, without more info we won't be able to unriddle this.

  • File/folder behaviour when importing in iTunes?

    I've recently purchased an iPhone 3G. I've also got a substantial mp3 collection (121GB), all ordered in a Genre/Artist/Album subfolder structure. Every file has an ID3 tag properly filled out.
    As you can tell I'm an organized person - at least when it comes to music.
    I need to know, when I hit the "Import folder", what will happen in the hard drive: Will my folders be modified in any way by iTunes? Or will iTunes create a separate folder with the +same songs+ in it, but just a different order/filetype? Will the new files (or the old files) have some sort of modification done to them, like a format change or a different tag added?
    I'd like it if iTunes could "read" my files, but I don't want them modified or doubled-up - that would just ruin all the work I've done and take too much space.
    How does iTunes manage the original files and the new files once I import them?
    Message was edited by: couzin2000

    Wow - this was a crucial find for me. I just converted to Win7 64bit with a fresh install of all programs including iTunes. When I went to import my library I checked the "Keep iTunes Media files Organized" not knowing exactly what the impact would be. I found out that it completely re-wrote the native folder and filenames in different scenarios (in windows explorer). Once a file was imported into iTunes it hated special character like hyphens or commas ultimately converting them to underscores. Itunes also combined some albums into a single album/folder like Elton John's Greatest Hits 1970-2002 instead of keeping 2 seperate albums for each disc. Other scenarios I was experiencing was basically rewritten incomplete album names. With nearly 40,000 songs (485GB) on my hard drive (8000 songs on my ipod) it was extremely painful to see names being changed without rhyme or reason.
    Simply unchecking both of those boxes got me back to my naming and filing conventions. Essentially back to good with no further conversion of special characters or file names.
    Unfortunately now I am going back and re-correcting all of the folders and files that were changed under the "checked" settings. Much happier with the organization of the database now.
    Thanks for sharing the note.

  • File dialog box when importing XML?

    Quick and hopefully easy question:
    What's the javascript format for selecting an XML file manually? I know it's not this:
    /* imports XML manually
    myDocument.importXML=File.openDialog("Choose the current XML file");
    I have my project working well, but I've decided to get the user to manually select the XML in case they've downloaded a second version named (for example) data-1.xml and not data.xml. Then the onus is on them to select the most up-to-date XML and we can also name the xml with a datastamp.
    Thanks for this any all other help on this forum - I have little enough hair to pull out as it is...
    Simon.

    HI Phil,
    Lovely - the XML import works although I now need to get my head around XML story formatting. It's dropping all the XML into the first frame on the first page, which I understand to a degree, but also dropping the XML where I need it.
    The issue I have with the XML import is the automated document creation has been built around a sort of hybrid flow- and frame-based XML import. Some of the XML drops into a couple of text frames on the first page (creation date, sections etc), then the rest of the document autoflows onto however many pages it requires.
    It looks like I'll need to convert it to entirely flow-based XML import, which might be a bit of a head-scratch for me (being relatively new to this).
    Thanks very much. No doubt I'll be back on here with more questions but this is a huge help.
    <edit> I did 'fix' the XML, and it works a treat. The more I do, the more I understand.
    Regards,
    Simon.

  • Illustrator files look jaggy when scaled up (when used as a particle)

    Am i doing something odd? I've got an illustrator vector which i'm using as a particle which scales over life (i want the particles to fill frame for a wipe i'm creating). But when they are bigger that 100% they look really jaggy, even when render quality is set to BEST.
    Any ideas?

    Howdy,
    Particle emitters and replicators render the source image at its current scale and use that bitmap as the starting point for each cell. This means that you might see scaling artifacts if a particle cell is smaller or larger than the source image.
    The one exception to this is when the emitter or replicator is in "Global 3D" mode. Each cell is then rendered based on the full size of the source, so with vector sources like shapes or PDFs the results will be higher quality. Keep in mind, however, that this means re-rasterizing that source image for each cell. So with an emitter of 1000 particles, for example, it's almost like you have a project with 1000 PDF images in it.
    In other words: use this power for good, not evil.

    Sounds like the pics are not color managed, or differently color managed from iPhoto. Where are these pics from?
