Eps C++ parser
Hi all,
I am not sure if this question belongs here, but I guess this forum should be the most appropriate. I am working with eps (encapsulated postscript) files and was looking for a C++ parser which could parse such files. I tried looking on the web but couldn't find anything of help. Actually, what I want is a way to compare 2 eps files to figure out the objects that have been added or deleted. Is there a way to do so?
Thanks,
Atul
Hi Chris,
Thanks for the reply. Ghostscript seems like a viable option . About the latter half of my problem, let me explain in detail. Let's say we generate a plot using some application (MATLAB for example) which consists of dots and lines and save it as an eps. We then import this plot into a software like Illustrator or Canvas to beautify the plot. The problem arises when the original plot (the one generated in MATLAB) changes for some reason. That in turn would mean repeating the entire steps again (Doing the same beautification to the plot in Illustrator or Canvas all over again). Is there a way by which I can know what new objects were added to the eps so that I can beautify only those keeping others intact? And all this needs to be programatic
Hope I was clear!
Best,
Atul

Photoshop elements 4.0 and an EPS "parser module"
I just bought a computer that runs a 64 bit version of Vista.
I installed my copy of Photoshop Elements 4.0 just fine, but when I attempt to import an eps file I get an error message that says "Could not complete your request because the parser module cannot parse the file."
I can do this fine on my laptop which runs Windows XP.
How can I get PE to open eps files running in Vista?
Plugins show that there is a "Generic EPS" plugin.
Thanks,

I am running Photoshop CS6 on a Mac OS X 10.9.3 and every time I save a large eps I can not open it again. I get this message when I try. "Could not complete your request because Photoshop was unable to parse the PostScript."
Oh, dear.
If you use PSE as your external editor for iphoto, you need to save the images back to iphoto by using Save, not Save As and not changing anything like the name or format that would bring up the Save As window. (You may need to adjust the editor prefs>saving files>on first save to save over existing.)
OR you can export the photos from iphoto to the desktop, use file>open in the editor and then change whatever you want and either import the saved image to the organizer or import it back to iphoto as a new file. What you are doing is extremely risky, particularly to the iphoto library which you may easily damage by your workflow.
I would start the organizer holding down the shift key, then create a new catalog and switch to the new one. Then try opening the editor without opening an image and see if you get any farther.
PSE and iphoto are not designed to be used as you've been doing. You are trying to write to the iphoto library from outside iphoto, which is the fastest known way to corrupt the library and lose all your photos. -
Illustrator CS4 - frequently generates corrupt EPS files that will not parse
I have used many versions of Illustrator prior to and including the CS lines. I am currently running CS4 and this is the first time I have experienced this issue. Approximately half of my EPS formatted illustrator files will not parse. I use Quark Xpress 7 for my layout (never liked any of the Indesign programs). If I try to generate a PDF with my CS4 generated EPS files placed at least 60% of the time the placed file will corrupt the PDF export resulting in no PDF being generated.
Further to this PDF export issue, if I attempt to parse the same EPS file into Photoshop, Photoshop will give me the error message "Could not complete your request because Photoshop was unable to parse the PostScript" and it will abort the attempt to open the file.
Anyone else having Illustrator EPS file issues?
Background info (if needed) Dual 2.0 Ghz, PowerMac G5, 8 gb RAM, running Tiger 10.4.11
I have attached a sample Illustrator file that will not Parse. It will open in Illustrator but not parse into Photoshop or if placed in Quark will not parse and allow for a PDF to be exported. Thanks for taking the time to write Steve.
I understand that I can drag and drop between programs. Ultimately, when attempting to parse an EPS in photoshop I am merely doing it to confirm that the EPS is indeed corrupt.
As mentioned previously, I predominately use Quark Xpress for my page layout program and until I installed CS4 I have had zero complications with using EPS files. Now I quite commonly can not export PDFs due to corrupt EPS files.
My question to the public is I am alone in this glitch or do others experience the same issue. My first thoughts are that CS4 has a glitch and I should be expecting an update in the near future. But, if I am the only person suffering from this issue than maybe I should be looking at my own software. -
I have to be able to open eps.files in photoshop elements. it worked fine in 9, it did'nt occur to me that in newer versions you get less in stead of more..i regret buying it now
So: in which folder i should put epsparser.8by in elements 13, to open eps files??Unfortunately, that EPS Parser.8BY only works in the 32 bit version of photoshop elements 13.
If your windows system is 64 bit, then you would have the 64 bit version of photoshop elements 13 and the EPS Parser.8BY is an 32 bit plugin and won't work in the 64 bit version of pse 13.
(i don't believe you can install the 32 bit version of pse 13 on a 64 bit windows system)
So the solution would be to keep pse 9 and use it for things that pse 13 won't do.
What features from previous versions are not available in Adobe Photoshop Elements 12?
Also, from the release notes
Following file formats are no longer supported in Photoshop Elements and the corresponding files will not be imported into the new catalogs:
JPEG 2000, Filmstrip (FLM), Wireless BMP (WBM, WBMP), PCX, Targa (TGA, VDA, ICB, VST), Photoshop RAW (RAW), PICT File (PCT, PICT), Scitex CT (SCT), Photoshop EPS (EPS), EPS TIFF Preview (EPS), Generic EPS (AI3, AI4, AI5, AI6, AI7, AI8, PS, EPS, AI, EPSF, EPSP).
In addition, on Mac OS following formats are no longer supported: IFF Format, Photoshop 2.0, Alias PIX, PICT Resource -
Had to do a recovery on my Windows Xp Media Edition yesterday. Just got this message when I started up my PC today and tried to open up Adobe Photoshop Business Edition 1.0 (I know, i know, but I LIKE Photoshop Business Edition 1.0. It does everything I need it to do without all the complications): "The program you are trying to run has a plug-in to correct known issues with this version of Windows. You should install the EPS Parser plug-in for Adobe Photodeluxe Home Edition 3.x and Business Edition 1.x to insure proper operation on this version of Windows. Contact the vendor regarding upgrades that are compatible with this version of Windows."
Can someone point me to a page with this download on it, please and thank you?
Cordially,
itsallsmallstuff...Goodness, i must be braindead....i should have thought about Binging it (i don't do Google anymore...%:~}...). i had some nutskull of a tech support person convince me that i needed to do a PC Recovery a couple of nights ago, and i have been reinstalling all after market software i had on my PC.
Thank gawd i had done a backup 7 weeks earlier or i would be sending in my PC right now to the shop to "recover" most of my data from my hard drive, an expensive proposition. As it is, i'm having to reset all my previous configurations and software and it's been a real nightmare....
Thank you so much for this answer.....i do appreciate it...<3.....%:~}.....

Unable to open .eps file "unknown format and cannot be opened" ?
A client sent me an .eps file (logo). I tried opening it in Illustrator AND photoshop (just to see if it was saved in one vs the other program) - however to no avail.
Illustrator gives me a message "unknown format and cannot be opened"
Photoshop gives me a message "photoshop was unable to parse the postscript".
I'm using Adobe CS4, and I've never seen this message before—would love to know what this means and how to resolve?
File attached if anyone is able to open / fix it?
Thanks kindly,
ChemolThanks for the advice Scott - does compression improve the .eps? Is it
silly for me to ask them to compress it since the file is only 766 KB
(that's how big the attachment is in my email - though I am unable to open
it)?
My friend is able to open it on his end - however the 3rd person (client) is
the one who sent it, and I have already requested a different version - no
response from them yet. Unfortunately what the company "has" is what he
will likely give to me again (ie: same file / unable to open). So ... I am
curious about how I can resolve this issue on my end - if possible?
Do you know what the AI and Photoshop error messages mean? Could the issue
be a mac vs PC concern? Or is it a corrupt file? Could it be a software
version issue (old vs new) ... or Quark incompatibility?
.... just guessing at this point....Any insight as to what different
scenarios may apply in this situation would be greatly appreciated ..thank
you. -
Can't open EPS from PhotoShop CS4 in PS CS6 (or much of anything else)
I have some EPS files that I just can't open - I'm trying to get the creator to send them in another format but they're not responding to any of my emails so I need to try and get the data out of them.
The start of the header looks like so:
%!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0
%%Creator: Adobe Photoshop Version 12.1x20110328 [20110328.r.145 2011/03/28:10:30:00 cutoff; r branch]
So that looks to me like CS4? CS6 is v14 so I'm guessing it's CS4.
They won't open in Photoshop, Illustrator, Inkscape or Irfanview.
The specific message in all of these is either unknown error or parsing error.
They will open in Acrobat Pro, but the resultant PDF is 100 times smaller than the original EPS (with no image compression etc.), around 1MB vs around 100MB, and all the raster graphics are flattened into a single layer, and the text is all outlines - I can't do any work with it.
Any ideas at all? Or shall I just keep trying to get hold of the creator? Or is there more information that I can provide to help figure this out?OK - just to answer my own question. Aside from my difficulty opening them - the data I wanted was never there anyway. I now have the original PSD files and if you export them to an EPS from PS, the behavior I was seeing in Acrobat is correct - the raster layers do get flattened, and the text converted to outlines. So those files would never have been of use to me even if I could open them with something other than Acrobat.

Photoshop CS5 crashes when opening EPS file
I am having trouble opening an EPS file in Photoshop CS5. Previously, PS wasn't opening at all, but I cleaned up my fonts and I can now open some files. This particular EPS file, however, causes the application to crash every time. I recently had similar trouble with Firefox and Flash and have since upgraded to 10.7. Any thoughts? Crash report below:

I previously had many, many older fonts running. Right now, I only have the system fonts + a handful of newer favorites active. That resolved my problems with opening my apps, including Photoshop.
I tried opening another EPS file (both of these are from Illustrator and never gave me any problems before) and Photoshop crashed again.
Finally, I took a closer look at one font that kept popping up in the error reports, Garamond Premier Pro. I mistakenly assumed this was a system or Adobe font, but deleting it seems to have resolved the issue. -
Photoshop EPS Won't Open/Distorted When Opened
The two problems I'm having revolve around Photoshop EPSs and Illustrator CS4.
I created a very high resolution file in Photoshop which included some vector shapes & text. My client wanted the files delivered in EPS format, so I exported them as Photoshop EPS.
Problem 1: If I check "Include Vector Data" when saving as Photoshop EPS, I am unable to open the file in Illustrator. Illustrator shows a "Parsing EPS Format..." dialogue box with a progress bar, and after about 10 seconds and the progress bar gets about halfway, it gives an error: "The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error." In addition, the EPS won't open in Photoshop, with the error: "Could not complete your request because photoshop was unable to parse the PostScript."
Problem 2: I am able to open the EPS file in Illustrator if I do not check "Include Vector Data" when saving, however the vector objects appear distorted. This also happens in PDF form.
I am certain the problems stem from the fact that the files are so large, because when I create a small test image in Photoshop and re-create the steps, I don't have any problems.
So I'd like some suggestions on either how to fix the problem or advice on a better way to deliver the files to my client. I'm a Web Designer by trade, but my boss just dropped this graphic design project into my lap and doesn't seem to understand that the two fields are vastly different. I use the Adobe Web Suite so I don't have InDesign, and even if I did I don't know how to use it. How do graphic designers keep their file sizes small when they're making such high-resolution designs?I just wanted to thank Scott for the tip below, i had an eps file sent to me and encountered the problems outlined above (i am using CS3) followed Scotts advice and i am pleased to say it worked a treat. Well done internet and well done forum users!

I removed line containing a similar line as above "FF logo BLACK.eps EPSFART5 ,ë ;¿§¿§ õw " from the file header using Notepad and the EPS file opens in CS3. Remove everything prior to %!PS-Adobe and it should open. -
Having issues opening eps files in Photoshop CC 2014
This is the Error that pops up:
Could not complete your request because Photoshop was unable to parse the PostScript.
I have a macSave it in Illustrator as AI file or as PDF/X-4.
You can place it in Photoshop as Smart Object or linked Smart Object or Open it, which would rasterize content.
Illustrator has also a PSD export which allows you to export AI files to PSD, under specific circumstances they are even editable.
Don't use EPS anymore, as it is an old outdated file type which does not support transparency and not color management. -
Question about Illustrator CS5 making eps files in Mac OS 10.9.5
Hello, I am using Illustrator CS5 on a Mac. I just updates to Mac OS 10.9.5
Now when I save an simple Illustrator vector file as an eps, and place it in another program (such as Quark), I get code instead of the preview image. I tried older vector eps files, and they still work. i tried older Quark files, and they still work. I ruled out font problems. I tried importing new Illustrator ai file, same result. Any thoughts?Ask in the AI forum and include proper details about your export settings and your artwork. EPS parsing errors usually mean you chose an unsuitable combination of settings and/or the embedded previews are botched.

Can't open my own Photoshop EPS file
I'm using ID CS3.
I created a clipping path on a photo, and from old force of habit, I saved it as an EPS instead of PSD (don't know if TIFFs can include clipping paths).
Now I can't open the EPS in Photoshop. I get the "Could not complete your request because the parser module cannot parse the file" message.
I can place the EPS in InDesign, and it looks okay (clipping path works).
Two questions: does the error message mean the file is damaged? Should I worry about using it in ID?
If not, how can I open the darned thing in Photoshop??
I don't think I really need to edit this image, but I wanted to resave it as a PSD or something else that won't give me any grief if I try to open it again in the future.
Should I never save a Photoshop file in EPS format? (Oops, that's three questions ...)
TIA,
MarleneI swear I'll never save a Photoshop file as EPS again. I never did get that file open.
But your comment about the hard edge that a clipping path provides made me think (and zoom in on the clipping path at a zillion percent in ID). That edge DID look hard and sawtoothed.
I ended up creating picture frames in ID that "clipped" the images as necessary, but that technique won't always work.
If I had left the PS clipping path intact, would it have actually printed out with the hard jagged edge? I suppose I could print it out on my LaserJet and possibly answer my own question ...

Photoshop can't open a Generic EPS
I have just upgraded to Leopard 10.5.0.3. I am on CS 3. I used to be able to create a eps file from Indesign, and open it in Photoshop. I am using CS2 right now... Now I get; Could not complete your request because the parser module cannot parse the file. My work around is saving a high rez pdf and then, I can open that. Can someone help me? Thanks Lisa
Which is it, CS2 or CS3?
>I have just upgraded to Leopard 10.5.0.3.
I am on CS 3. I used to be able to create a eps file from Indesign, and open it in Photoshop.
I am using CS2 right now.
CS2 is not supported in Leopard and it will never get updated. -
Need a Bigger Hammer for bad .eps graphic
I should be asking this in the Sign Maker Plus forum or something , but alas this is my familar place.
A peer has asked me to look at a bad eps, originally submitted via email uncompressed, I deemed it corrupted by email transfer; happens all the time.
Having received a replacement via email in a compressed folder, and uncompressed locally, it behaves as -
InDesign will place the graphic showing a very low res preview in Normal Preview; Overprint Preview shows the Gray Frame similair to Display Performance > Fast and upon export to pdf returns the message "Failed to Export an EPS Item on page 1. View additional errors?"
Illustrator CS4 upon attempting to open yields the message "The operation cannot be completed due to an unknown error"
Photoshop CS4 upon attempting to open yields the message "Photoshop could not complete your request because Photoshop was unable to parse the Postscript"
Distiller using any preset (I actually only tested 5) happily produces an empty page, lettersize. Interestingly the last status message, never a log for failed job, notes that "This document passes PDF/X-1a compliance checks"
The obvious is get a new file...we're talking about people who needed help with compressing a file here...
Any other hammers out there which might parse this unknown created by .eps?
I suppose I could suggest a pixel based format...
Hosted zip at Acrobat.com
https://acrobat.com/#d=sJu*5CDTk4H3UI*srT-9bgInteresting. It *appears* to be a perfectly valid EPS, but it might be a bit bigger than Illy, Photoshop, or InDesign can handle:
|19040 - 21231| = 2191 pt ~ 30.43 in ~ 77.3 cm wide
|-446 - 1018| = 1464 pt ~ 20.3 in ~ 51.6 cm high
Perhaps that's the problem.
Or perhaps it's not -- setting the Distiller to a default page size of 3,000 x 3,000 points resulted in a much larger, yet still blank page.
